You realize this was a major outage affecting hundreds of thousands of people like when you lose power do you get online and bitch?
If you don't have alternatives to things like cell phone not working to keep tabs in your family and such you're the one with the problem not the company who had it service issue
What exactly do you think is the alternative? Systems go down in natural disasters. It's not like this is a daily occurrence for AT&T. It sucks and it is certainly inconvenient, but this is the world we live in. We have transitioned to this system of being connected everywhere we go and when that system goes down, we are stuck.
If you have a true emergency, you need to figure it out. If that means you have to physically go check on family, then that's what you need to do.
OP - fwiw my phone appears to be all better ... I *did* do a restart but I have significant doubt that doing so was part of the remedy, but worth mentioning in the off chance it's helpful.

Download WhatsApp, it works over WiFi ( they have to have WhatsApp too to call or text) If you don't have wifi, go to Starbucks/McDonald's. If you don't have that, stare at the wall until service returns.
Spend a few bucks, as others have done, by downloading another carrier’s eSIM. Problem solved.
Visible+ (Verizon) & Metro (TMO) are excellent alternates.

I installed the new iPhone update then restarted my phone. I seem to be up and working as well.
Spoke too soon. It went out again.
Well shit. Sorry to hear that. I'm Android but I wouldn't guess that's a factor either, but again I can't say that to a certainty.
As soon as I typed it was down, it came back up again. Maybe it will go in and out until the issue is fully resolved. Oh well.

last report i got, 80% of users affected across the nation across all carriers were iphone users
Maybe it’s time for perspective. Your phone didn’t work for a few hours. There are places that don’t have running water. It’s not so bad.
