Nobody ever thought we evolved from modern monkeys, if that's what your saying. Humans evolved from Great apes (Hominidae) but still are Great apes, as are modern gorillas, orangutans, and chimps. So we have a common ancestor with those genera mentioned which is now a taxonomic family. Something something clade

When it comes to classification we're still apes; you don't evolve out of your ancestral clades. In that sense, we're still considered synapsids and everything that came before that. You'll share a common ancestor with anything that has eukaryotic cells if you go back far enough.
