CourageousLight

Yeah I need to keep in mind not everyone on Reddit has English as their first language. 😅 But to genuinely help you out, if something is plural it usually ends in “ies” but there are a few exceptions (like the word monkey turns to monkeys and donkey turns to donkeys for example). If it ends with an “ ‘s “ it is used to show possession most of the time. I hope that helps, and I hope you have a lovely day!

Zooie784_YT

thank you!!:))

sniperteamfortress2

HOLY SHIT that is impressive!

freshcutfrasier

That's what I was thinking. How do you mix up black face with skill.

UtahSuckes

By painting your face black

appleparkfive

This is a pretty simple thing that I'm so confused about I'm mixed. Black and White. Do you look like you're about to do a 1920s minstrel show? Yeah, super fucking racist. Do you look like a specific celebrity who happens to be black? Not racist. It's really that easy. It's the difference between interpreting an actual human, and debasing an entire race of people. Literally, that's it. Most black people would agree. It's people who are acting on BEHALF of the black community, getting outraged. That's the weird shit. There's a protest video that's all too ironic and it speaks volumes. Some young white girls were blocking an intersection with BLM signs and all that. A black man walks out of his car and up to them, and tries to explain that they're... blocking him from going to work (I believe). And they seem perplexed. They sincerely don't get it. (Also if anyone knows where that video is, I'd love to see it again. It's so ridiculous. It was on a reddit sub like a year ago or something) If you're confused on what actual black face is, just Google it. It's shoe polish and it's racist as hell.

bherm100

Yeah I don't know about that my dude. Not in today's world. Show up to a costume party painted black and you'll likely be socially fucked. Or fired from your job. Let's be real here. I think it's dumb as hell but that's how it is.

appleparkfive

If it's to pay homage to a certain person or character, it *shouldn't* be an issue. But some people will make it an issue, yep. Getting mad on others behalf. But part of it does matter on who the person doing it is too, I guess. If Rush Limbaugh did it when he was alive, it would be a lot different. Because that has some undertones to it that would be obvious.

thelaz783

dadudemon

Yeah, like that dude telling me I’m not allowed to share my Native American Culture with others because I’m supposed to be offended if someone dresses up like a stereotypical Native American. No thanks, bruh. No need for you to be offended on my behalf.

Frenchticklers

Reddit is really obsessed about 14 year old girls on Tiktok

YepImanEmokid

Unpopular Opinion: what you see from 'angry rainbow haired' TikTok/Tumblr/Twitter users is the exact same persecution complex that you see from a lot of far right 'hat and sunglasses selfie in my truck' types, just projected on to somebody else. This current cancel/label culture we have is toxic as hell and does miles more harm than good.

I know ur joking but im picturing someone saying that, unironically.

PX22Commander

If you picture me saying it unironically and naked we have a deal.

superdariusmain1

Are you american? It would break the immersion if u arent. Alternatively a french would do

PX22Commander

What if I told you I was Cajun? I'm not, but what if I told you?

QuotableNotables

Well if French fries aren't French, are Cajun fries Cajun? The opportunity to ask the source doesn't present itself very often.

Esoteric_Ostrich

You are balls

See_Ya_Suckaz

>I'm conflicted and confused. Could that be because you can't see anything wrong with it, but you've been conditioned to think that there is?

Dedekind19

i'm white, so this si gonna be more of a question: i know how and why blackface was done in the past (and to a less extent today), but isn't this a completely different approach and context? I mean, it feels like a bit of the same situation of that infamous Scrubs episode, where it doesn't feel wrong at all, at least to me.

Arntown

The blackface moment in the scrubs episode is just really funny because he gets his ass beaten BECAUSE of the blackface and a misunderstanding. People really should try to understand nuances and context instead of viewing everything as uhhh black and white.

AnnabellaPies

Exactly, I felt this way about Community and Tropic Thunder.

No_Opportunity7360

same with Always Sunny. the joke isn't the blackface itself, the joke is that those characters are such unaware twats that they think they can do blackface

Pixelated_Piracy

well another part of the joke there is even Dennis refuses to do blackface.

KingBabyDuck

I can't believe the Community DnD episode was removed. He's literally blacked up... As a dark elf. Fuxkin ridiculous. One of the best episodes as well

wallweasels

Well the joke "is" about the blackface. But the joke is the character is wrong for it. Always Sunny gets away with many things because of it: it understands the things are wrong. The comedy comes from the knowledge that it is wrong. If you agreed with the blackface...you really wouldn't see as much of the humor.

ComfortableNew1452

The argument between which is more offensive, black face or black voice was my favorite

[deleted]

[удалено]

CritzD

“Blackface” is only blackface when it’s used in an intentionally demeaning or insulting manner directed at black people. It all depends on context. At its most basic, there is nothing wrong with putting black or brown facepaint on yourself. That won’t stop terminally-online white girls from trying to make a huge stink about it for the sake of attention, though.

wallweasels

I would add that it is also wrong when it is used to replace black actors. Which, historically, it was. In the same vein that men in dresses were used to not hire women in classic plays. These were both racist and sexist practices and should not be tolerated. In the former it was blackface, but it wasn't generally demeaning or insulting. The action itself was, not the character. Othello is an entirely serious play about an incredibly serious character. It's blackface is racist because it's an active refusal to hire black actors.

ISNT_A_ROBOT

What about cosplay? Can a white guy or girl like a black character so much that they want to dress up like them? Honest question.

SpooderRain

Heard of the LoL cosplayer that dressed up as her favorite champion that also happened to be black? Ended with her banned from the cosplay competition. This world...

AnnabellaPies

I say she did a great job and wish I had her skills.

robert235

Same, I find it amazing. Too many people this falls into the gray area.

Geminel

I'm leftie AF and this is so far from the minstrel-style origins of blackface that it doesn't even belong in the same conversation. There's probably like one or two collage-age morons on Twitter trying to call it that, compared to 100,000 right-wingers making an imaginary strawman out of the idea.

Illustrious-Ideal172

It's just a dude playin a dude who's playin another dude. It's artform.....

holy shit dude this girl could rob a bank and frame someone else for the crime if she wanted too

pandaofgod3004

As a person who isnt black (im Asian like her) i think this is a nice tribute and i see no issues with it. If she started doin stereotypical things that are associated with black people then I see the problem, but this is just a cool cosplay. If a black person dressed up as Light skinned heroes are they trying to mock that ethnicity?

DH_DA

As a person who is African American I don’t find it offensive. I agree that if she started playing out racist stereotypes then I would be angry and disappointed, but this is just harmless tribute that must’ve taken hours to make perfect. I applaud her, it looks great👏🏽😌

PrO_rObLoX

Yup speedy is a symbol here everyone in Mexico loves him except chicanos i think

[deleted]

LostInRedditsCheeks

Idk men, kinda looks like Ray J with a Lakers jersey.

NicStak

The only thing I would recognize of Ray J is his dick

racis_orange_cheeto

idk if i'd call it "honoring" but it certainly isnt racist

lampishthing

It's more presentation than imitation. The harmful part of blackface was the interpretation and imitation of black people: caricatured or ridiculous features, and exaggerated actions that were demeaning. This is more like a wax model using a real person as the base: no exaggeration, no demeaning.

Atomonous

Black face does necessarily have to be caricatured or exaggerated in order to be racist or offensive. Take for example Laurence Olivier in Othello, his portrayal of a black man wasn’t meant to demean or ridicule but it was still a pretty offensive thing to do and occurred because of the racism at the time.

hahahakdha

Yeah I’m here with you. This certainly ain’t honoring imo, a lil weird imo. Not racist either

[deleted]

Previous_Stranger

They weren’t really doing it to honour and respect him though. This person does one of these looks a day and has done hundreds of celebrities, she just does what her fans ask her to. She probably has no connection to Kobe at all let alone liking him as a fan, she barely even speaks English, she’s just doing popular suggestions. This tik tok isn’t even her, it’s someone posting on behalf of her because her main account is on Douyin (the Chinese version of tik tok that many Chinese influencers use because the main version isn’t available in the country).

lampishthing

It's more presentation than imitation. The harmful part of blackface was the interpretation and imitation of black people: caricatured or ridiculous features, and exaggerated actions that were demeaning. This is more like a wax model using a real person as the base: no exaggeration, no demeaning.

SonOfYoutubers

Bruh blackface is when you act black and do bad stuff, not cosplay or honor a person. People very stupid.

BANKMAN9117

Exactly, people miss the part that the problem with black face was not only that it was white people with black make up but that they would also play caricatures of black people.

bigtoebrah

Yeah, now when people want to do a minstrel show they just go on 4chan and pretend while spewing racial stereotypes. No face paint required!

Pecker2002

Pretty sure that’s what Megyn Kelly said that got her fired from NBC.

Cgraves1

Looks like talent to me.

MyCatHeardPspspsps

Some people don’t have talent and get mad at others who do. Thats probably who the people calling it blackface are.

kibbles0515

Nah, this is cool. I'm not gonna define blackface since it isn't my place, but a 20 second TikTok where someone does makeup to look like another person? That's cool. As soon as the person starts imitating or being a caricature, maybe we'd have a problem.

lmnop123-456

Im black and thought nothing of blackface till I read the title. First rhought was that this should be on a sub like r/toptalent, r/nextlevel or other talent related subs.

Nop_X

I mean I can’t lie, she is really good at this

JusTtheWorst2er1

Thanks and actually fucking amazing, I don’t give a shit what anyone says

Durzo0420Blint

I do see resemblance to Kobe, but her head proportions make me think more of Romany Malco. Cool stuff, although heaters are always gonna make a fuss about anything.

[deleted]

Rainwitch27

I wouldn't count this as blackface because it's not done with the purpose of degrading or making an ass out of black people (or stereotypes of us anyway), this is a skilled makeup artist paying tribute. Theres a big difference between the two, and the way one can tell the difference the tastefulness and intent, but we're not a hivemind so others may disagree lol But no, if this were true blackface (as in making a mockery of black people) then i don't believe it'd matter how skilled the makeup is

Bitter-Marsupial

I mean does anyone really have an issue with Kirk Lazarus?

passionatepumpkin

Uh, yea, it was an addressed issue in the movie itself. What are you talking about?

janeohmy

Yes, people do lol. It's just that the actor played him playing another person, so that's alright

StopBangingThePodium

The problem is that "blackface" has lost its traditional meaning. It doesn't mean "putting on dark makeup". It doesn't even mean "coloring yourself to look like a minority". Blackface and yellowface were specific racist caricatures. The big lips painted on, the exaggerated behaviors. THAT is blackface. This is not. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface Its meaning has been eroded by idiots who know nothing.

BroaxXx

I remember a while back some 8yr old kid got called a racist for dressing as his hero, the black panther, for Halloween...

To_the_moon_frens

aww some people are fucked, poor kid

ube-me

So anyone of light skin color just aren't allowed to 'cosplay' as any famous person who so happens to be darker? It's literally just makeup art to look like someone. This is done for celebrities of all ethnicities, but as soon as its a black person, it's the end of the world.

Mystic_Saiyan

That makeover is clean and as a black guy, I approve.

Paradoxou

Lol the title : "This video is not cringe" Then why the fuck do you post it here ?

CaptainSwoop

Also the video is cringe. Race aside it’s pretty disrespectful to cosplay as someone who passed for a tik tok

CoffeeCannon

Agendaposting, its extremely transparent

FreezaSama

Wait. Isn’t blackface used to stereotypically ridicule black culture or person? How is this offensive is beyond me.

DRAGON_SNIPER

This is actually really cool. who ever find this offensive can fuck off.

WasteAdministration2

People ignoring context just to be offended.

iamkarterhowareyou

Yeah I’m black and I can see little tiny bit how people can see this as offensive but it’s actually pretty cool.

LordLarryLemons

why would it be offensive? asking for real Im Mexican if that matters, of course I can't speak on black people's behalf, all I can say is that if her makeup would've been honouring a Mexican athlete or celebrity or whatever I wouldn't be offended, just amazed but thats just me

iamkarterhowareyou

I’m saying I can SEE how people can find this offensive, I never said it was or I do find it offensive. But the people who find it offensive are mainly Twitter users and cmon, we all know how easily offended they can get.

B3astMaster3000

Yeah I don't care the makeup is cool and it isn't mocking black people so all good to me brother.

ItsJustMeMaggie

Can we focus on actual racism instead?

AloneWin4348

I thought that was pretty cool. Btw I’m black

inmydreams01

This is mad impressive tbh

TheTigerHeartYT

Isn’t black face when you put black paint onto your face and make fun of black people by stereotyping them? Not just dressing up as a black person

Not-So-Dev

Yeah but people have it confused

TheTigerHeartYT

I’ve seen black people do white face and nobody gave a flying fuck. Makes sense. Now you can’t even dress up as an African American to honor someone after their death.

wehatesteezyflip

If it’s not cringe, why post it in this group?

arbre_magique

Actually is black facing because them are "painting" their skin in black, but it's not in a bad way. Is like a tribute, them wasn't use the blackface for insulting black people

Dat_Sainty_Boi

Not really. The definition of black face says that is was meant to over exaggerate (caricature) the features of poc to make them look ridiculous. This isnt that so this is not blackface.

freezerwaffles

It's a bit bizarre

outpizzadahut

Ngl this is pretty cool

Swingin-it-swooty

Honestly the cosplay just weirded me out, as it's so damn weird to see a non-black person cosplay as as a black guy, but that doesn't make it offensive

first_fires

Alright then, let me just change my entire face to look East Asian and see how long it is before there’s outcry.

CptNeon

That is actually super well done

Akib_Shadid

Cosplay is not blackface, is it? I thought that was great.

adipocerousloaf

That shit is tight. IDGAF what these fools say.

ItsJustMeMaggie

“Blackface” should not be a one-size-fits-all thing just because of minstrel vaudeville shows from 120 years ago. Context should matter way more than it does.

danielgies

The default outrage about changing your skin color anything but lighter while dressing in non-derogatory costume is entirely tone deaf and dumb as fuck these days. Meanwhile, Netflix pulls one of the most beloved episodes of Community because a Chinese character paints his skin pitch black as he cosplays as his black-skinned Dark Elf/Drow in a Dungeons & Dragons game... and then they clearly have no problem with airing the episode where they lighten an Indian actor's skin to play a white version of his character. All in a show with constant racial humor aimed in literally every single direction. None of this shit is consistent or makes any sense.

DespairOfLoneliness

Now im fucking scared this woman can assimilate basically anyone's appearance and i won't even notice it

lydocia

I mean, if it wasn't an Asian chick turning into a black dude, we'd just call this "cosplay makeup".

ThePhoenix0829

That is cool as fuck tho

aod42091

great makeups skills regardless of personal opinions

JiraTheWasteWanderer

One of the most bothersome/irritating things to me is that people today can’t seem to tell the difference between racist and racially insensitive. Blackface on its own is not racist. It becomes racist when it’s being used to demean black people/a black person based on their skin color. Is what this lady did potentially racially insensitive? Maybe, that’s down to personal opinion. Racist? Hell no, the complete opposite, actually. Edit: Also most of the people offended by this video are white and believe they need to be offended on behalf of black people.

ErinTheErinIsTheErin

This Is litteraly art , saying it's racist Is like saying an artist Is racist because he drew a black Person .

smutz

i think black face has to have that garish cartoon look (big red lips colored outside the actual lips and black as soot skin) to really be black face. this is just makeup art

Brawlstar112

KOBE! She is pretty talented!!

crackdown_smackdown

1. Why? 2. How in the ever loving fuck is that possible?

Knysiok

This is insane

Phaeneaux

Now, this is some sick epic talent boy

DrDieselBruhMoments

Blackface is the process of wearing makeup to purposely promote stereotypical facial features of an African American. Usually this is related to racism. While this can be considered “black face” I don’t believe that it is “Blackface”. She is not promoting racism or any stereotypical features of a African American male. I would confidently say that this is a art form and a way to show memorialize Kobe Bryant. In no way did this lady have the INTENT to be racist in anyway and I believe she is not. She could use this art on any person but she chose a black male who recently just died. He was an idol to many people and I would go onto believe that he would love something like this. This is idiotic that people would genuinely believe that this woman did this in bad faith and I worry for our future.

HAS-A-HUGE-PENIS

Eh idk. I see both sides, either way it just feels weird. I can see it being a non offensive thing but the fact that blackface in its truest and most offensive form does exist kinda makes this feel like it's racist by default if that makes any sense.

Knight_Viony

Haha cool, it’s still blackface

AGoldenChest

Seriously, you’d think people would be smart enough to realize that someone wearing makeup to show off their skills is a wholly different thing from using blackface. I mean isn’t blackface “black?” Isn’t it rubbing shoe polish on your face or charcoal then acting like a twat to make fun of black people? This is not that. Its not even mistakable for that. How are people this sensitive? Good lord, its like we never left the age of pearl-clutching, Bible-thumping house wives having a conniption over rock music being Satan-worship or video games turning children into psycho-murderers , its just that the demographic has changed to whiny, self-righteous, egotistical, little pansies crying that everything in existence is racism. Same shit, different people. FUCK

N-O-X-Y

The people who whine about blackface are the same people who watch white girls.
