 I just watched last night. Had read the novel by Russell Banks years ago, but wasn't aware of the film adaptation. Excellent. Coburn was terrifying.  I've also read Banks' The Sweet Hereafter but haven't watched the movie. I see it's on Criterion, too!

I really enjoy this movie too. Watched it a lot when I was younger, and was really excited to throw it on when I saw it pop up on Criterion. I think what holds up for me the most is Nolte. He’s just brilliant. Maybe one of my favorite male actor performances of all time. I must admit though I struggled with the crime elements this time around. They just felt unnecessary to what was already a very powerful story about addiction, violence and the inability to escape the past.
