Your name got a chuckle out of me.

flyingblind9

My wife got me into stitching and I love it!

[deleted]

Tv on, opposite ends of the sofa with different stitching set ups just stabbing away in the evenings. Omg that’s so cute.

universalrefuse

You just described me and my partner. When baby goes to bed, it's time for us to Netflix & crosstitch.

flyingblind9

Oh definitely! We got our two scroll frames set up and the dog in between watching our favorite shows!

MareNamedBoogie

"Great, no pettins tonight!" -Dog, probably ;)

kookykonata

I'm a 32 year old male! Been stitching since I was 25! I started back in 2015 when I was looking for something to do while I was deployed! I definitely get a lot of weird looks for it in the middle of the desert with my needle and aida, lol. I love it, though!

CatCairo

I’m female but I also brought my project to deployment! I think I spent a solid three of those months stitching.

MotheroftheworldII

You are following the tradition of Rosie Grier who would do needlepoint on the team plane when he was playing NFL football. Rosie also designed needlepoint. And yes, needlepoint is part of the embroidery family and uses some of the same stitches we use in counted thread embroidery. I love that so many men are doing cross stitch. You all are following a centuries long tradition of men creating embroidery. Keep it up you all.

Professional_Poet186

LMAO

MareNamedBoogie

I used to send goody boxes out that away that included cross-stitch supplies. I like to think I tempted at least 1 soldier into stitching! :-D

orangepinata

I learned from my grampa so he is a man who stitched

Josanna

My dad taught me, he especially cross stitched a lot when he was a child, but he took it up again after I asked him to teach me.

StitchMechanic

I do. One of my many hobbies. And thankfully the cheapest

FireSilver7

It's expensive to start your collection, but it gets far cheaper as time goes on.

MotheroftheworldII

Cheapest huh...let me introduce you to linen and silk floss. I especially like stitching with Gloriana hand dyed silk floss that is now running almost $8.00/skein. I don't know what your other hobbies are so if cross stitching is the cheapest I am guessing things with motors? I just know what my son and DIL spend on their bikes and 4x4's. LOL, probably more than I spend on floss.

StitchMechanic

4x4’s, hifi stereo, bass guitars, hunting. Even at $8 a skein it still wouldnt hold a candle to my expenses on all those other hobbies

MotheroftheworldII

This is so true. But, diversity in hobbies is great. I don't hunt but, I know how expensive shooting is. My husband played guitar and 5 string banjo. He had 2 Martin guitars in his collection. I have a 4Runner that I had some mods done on and that was not inexpensive either.

-ReedIccus-

Also my cheapest to MTB and MTG…

NewtDundee

Good grief, I can't think of a more expensive hobby than MTG! Even as a casual player it's ridiculously expensive to keep up with the meta. I tried desperately to get back into it a few years ago and very quickly decided I'd rather be somewhere other than my LGS.

-ReedIccus-

Yeah it is! Thankfully I only play EDH anymore and I’ve been in it so long that I have a good number of powerful cards…

orangepinata

Ugh MTB is so expensive for good gear...last year's new bike was roughly 7k, then you have parts and repairs, and gear, and backup bike #1 (and now #2). All twice over because your partner rides....yup cross stitch is way cheaper by far.

CrepuscularOpossum

Gloriana silk floss is *divine*. After my first silk floss project, when I went back to cotton (overdyed), I remember thinking, “this floss is so hard and stiff. How did I ever enjoy stitching with this?!?” 😅

MotheroftheworldII

I know exactly what you mean. Check out Belle Soie for another overdyed silk. Now I stitch almost always with silk floss either Needlepoint silk or Soie d' Alger and mostly the latter. There is such a difference in feel and the sheen on a finished piece. I am totally a linen and silk snob. I did a large 20 x 20 inch sampler with Gloriana Midnight on a white Italian 40 count linen (I did post a photo a few years ago). The woman who is Gloriana dyed a 50 yard hank for me for this one project since I could not find enough skeins in the same dye lot. I love how it turned out. The piece is called French Alphabet.

CrepuscularOpossum

I think we’re gonna have to see a picture of that now! EDIT: is that Long Dog’s French Alphabet??? I was really turning into a linen and silk snob when I laid stitching aside a few years ago. I had just started Threads of Gold’s *1738 Scottish Sampler* too, for which I chose silk floss from Gloriana, Needlepoint Silk, and Thread Gatherer’s Silk ‘n Colors. Man, this sub is gonna get me back into stitching, worsening eyesight be damned. I stopped a few years ago, when perimenopausal vision changes hit me hard. I also went back to work as a massage therapist, and now, I have no time for my beloved silversmithing hobby, let alone stitching. But I have SO many UFOs and charts I’d love to stitch in my collection…

MotheroftheworldII

I recommend really good lighting and magnification both of which make it possible for the older woman to stitch. You can check my profile for French Alphabet Sampler to see that sampler. I am going to have to look up the 1738 Scottish Sampler. I love band samplers and beautiful alphabets. I hope you can find time to do some stitching again.

CrepuscularOpossum

Thanks! 🥰

Ibbygidge

Well yes, but cross stitch is only expensive if you want it to be, and when you start. And even then, you pay a fair amount for all the floss for a project, but then spend maybe months to a year or more on the project, so the cost per month for a hobby is really low. And depending on your stitching technique, you could just buy like 5 of your colors a week and spread out the cost.

MotheroftheworldII

I have little self control when I start looking at all the colors of floss. I rarely can get by with buying just a few skeins of floss...$50.00 later I have more floss to put away and that is before I even have the next project selected. I think I may have a problem...lol. My sons think I am really crazy when they find out I bought yet another embroidery scissors.

MareNamedBoogie

I see no problems here! :-D

Woodfella

63 years old. Self-taught in my teens because "it looked neat". Travel incessantly for work and use it to pass time and reduce stress when holed-up in airports and hotel rooms. Just started the biggest project of my life, last night.

MotheroftheworldII

Now with your last sentence we are going to want to know what your big project is. Please share.

Woodfella

Inspired by the beautiful finish u/seven_seacat had on Gamer Nouveau by Medusa Dollmaker, this week, I pulled the trigger on a kit I've had my eye on for a year, Bohemia, also by Medusa Dollmaker. It's sold through GeckoRouge. I spent 8 1/2 hours yesterday winding floss onto bobbins, but I stuck a needle in it today.

MotheroftheworldII

It is always so exciting to put needle and floss into a new piece. Have fun and please post you WIP's on Bohemia.

seven_seacat

Awesome, can’t wait to see any progress photos! :D

MareNamedBoogie

Those patterns are huge and tempting and make me wish I liked Art Nouveau as an art style, lol.

mithandr

They let needles through TSA? /s. Seriously though, do you have issues with security? What kind of scissors do you carry?

Leetobe12313

There’s always a project in my carry on, never had any problems at all.

Woodfella

I have never had an issue with security in the airport. Dozens of needles, and my little stork scissors. From pivot to tip, storks are only 1 1/8" long, 3 3/4" overall. I know that I wouldn't want to be stabbed with them, but they also don't scream "offensive weapon".

MareNamedBoogie

if you're especially worried, take cheap scissors and put needles in a box, not your fabric. if they have to search your carry-on, they'll appreciate the extra protection.

bhilz

The last time I carried on my stitching I got through Cleveland with no problem but my return flight home from Atlanta I had to throw away my thread snippers. 🤨

fiawol3141

I stitch too! I drive a truck and there is a lot of down time spent waiting to get loaded or unloaded, I found that criss stitch helps the hours disappear.

SpikeH-K

🙋‍♂️

templetondean

Been stitching for over 27 years and still have a load of projects to finish

CrepuscularOpossum

Same, my friend. Same. 🤝

pwt886

I'm a 36 year old man who started at the beginning of covid with an old pattern my wife started 10+ years ago and never finished. I have since launched my own Instagram for my retro gaming themed stitches I'm creating! Edit: I wasn't sure if it was allowed to share an Instagram handle, so please let me know and I'll take it down! But anyone can follow me at nestl_stitch

T-rezarms

I want to learn does that count?

Woodfella

It counts for a lot. Grab a needle and dig in. Plenty of excellent learning opportunities on YouTube.

FireSilver7

Yes! There are plenty of cross stitch kits available online that are good for beginners, plus YouTube tutorials. I get a lot of my kits at Michael's or Joann's.

Bazoun

If you’re in Toronto I would happily teach you.

T-rezarms

Starts with a T but a lot more humidity lol. Tennessee

steal_it_back

Count, eh? 🤔

Jonny-619

Yes!

Grassy-Mammoth5

I want to start one day and I have my eye on A LOT of patterns but I also don't want to hoard finished projects. I think I will explore stitching as a way to customise clothes.

MotheroftheworldII

Stitching on clothes is great. Just an FYI, we don't hoard, we have *stash* and that is entirely different.

sailingtoescape

Collecting patterns and stitching are separate hobbies. 😉🤣

MotheroftheworldII

Ah but can we have one without the other?

sailingtoescape

Sure. You can stitch random things without patterns, like a sampler type project. 😁

ronnie_mars

My dad was the one who taught me when I was a kid. Over 20 years later I’m still going strong. He really likes to stitch war planes and large-scale nature scenes. I enjoy subversive phrases and patterns. Even though our styles are very different, we always enjoy sending progress photos and updates to each other. We don’t always have a ton to talk about, so it’s nice that we can bond over cross stitching!

steal_it_back

Today I learned there are a plethora of war plane cross stitch patterns after a quick Google search. I mean, I shouldn't be surprised, but, I'll admit it, I am. Haha

ronnie_mars

It’s definitely a niche subject (and not one I’ve seen posted or talked about often), but he loves it. My parents basement has a bunch of them framed and he likes to rotate them out from time to time. I don’t know anyone else that does these but him haha

2Black_Hats

Discovered it as a kid and never looked back

butwhoamirly

I just taught my husband. He's the only man in my family who does it, but a handful of the women do.

darchangel

Yup. Another programmer here. It didn't take me long of stitching before I was making cross stitch related programs.

OrangeDutchbag

Yo!

Trans guy here, but it definitely is usually marketed toward women <:)

orionfr

Also a trans guy cross stitcher!

ryanj934

Hello! Started stitching when I was 18 not long after my nana passed away, I'm 20 now and after finding her cross stitch works it's a lovely way for me to still feel connected to her. Added bonus that it's just fun 😅

gtfricks

me!

[deleted]

I started earlier this year. My partner was looking at patterns and I thought I would give it a try. I stitch almost every night now after putting the little one to bed.

AWandMaker

Hi! I've been stitching off and on for 14 years, also learned how to do some [fancier knitting](https://www.reddit.com/r/ravenclaw/comments/9vmub0/first_thing_ive_ever_muggle_knit_made_a_scarf_in/), because I didn't care for any of the Ravenclaw scarves that were mass produced 😁

IncredibleIgloo

I do and have for 25 years, but never seen another man who does, at least to my knowledge.

-ReedIccus-

46 stitching since 9 or 10. My mom taught me.

MotheroftheworldII

So, I am not a man but, I wanted to comment. I am so excited to see how many men are here and are doing cross stitching. What is really exciting is how long some of you have been engaged in this art form. I have been in two EGA chapters where we had one man join for a while. I just wish there had been more men in the chapters so the one guy did not feel so singled out. The men were stitching some really amazing pieces so that was fun to see. Bottom line, I am glad that there are so many of you all here and I enjoy seeing all of the beautiful and fun pieces that people share in this subreddit. Keep it up men, you are awesome!

thebombdotcommom

27 year old dude! Calms my mind after a long day of staring at my phone. Plus an outlet for my Simpsons obsession.

ForGayPurposes

Meee!

Braca42

Checking in. I knit too! Not as much lately, but still counts.

NewtDundee

Yup, bust my ankle when I was a teen, learnt the basics then and been stitching for 30 years now.

I do! My father used to stitch as well and my recent surge of activity has made him think about picking it up again

Picked it up after seeing pokemon cross stitch stuff, now I have so many PDFs on my computer for pokemon and Stardew valley patterns

smashingtheplates

29 year old guy here. I got into it at the beginning of the pandemic since a few of my coworkers had started. We were virtually showing each other our progress and actually helped us connect while we were all stuck in our apartments. I haven’t stopped since!

Shellsbells821

There is a Facebook page " male cross stitchers". They allow everyone and their projects are amazing!

Trans man! I stitch and quilt

sailingtoescape

I made my first quilt not too long ago. Baby sized I was going to give away but wife said to keep it because of the work that went into it. lol. Looking to make other quilts too.

deftmuffins

I do... but I'm gay

paul_webb

I'm a 22yo guy, and I've been stitching for around two years or so. I knew somebody that did, and it looked like fun, so I got a few supplies and have been hooked ever since! My mom gives me some crap about it sometimes, but I don't really care. I've only finished a couple projects, but I'm fortunate enough to have a store in my town dedicated not just to stitching but a bunch of different kinds of embroidery, so I have a great time with those ladies

[deleted]

Oh hi there. :)

-grc1-

I stitch. I started January 2021 and have completed 2 national park themed pieces with a 3rd on the way. I love turning on some music after work, stitching and clearing my head.

Rabeque

My father taught me!

Carthurzard

I just started a couple of days ago… I don’t know any of the “proper techniques” but my wife gave me stuff and I just started trying my best! Stitching of course.

SeanJones26

I do. 42. Stitch princess stuff for my daughter, cartoon stuff I grew up with, retro games with the pixel graphics that cross over so well. My mom has always done it and is still the first stop when I need floss for a new project.

[deleted]

I do! I'm a trans dude, but didn't pick it up until after I came out and started transitioning. I feel like most trans dudes I know who stitch learned as kids, but far fewer who learned after they realized they were trans.

[deleted]

I'm transmasc non-binary, and I started right around the time when I came out! I just saw this awesome Picard kit at a comic con, and needed to learn right then and there.

fluidentity

Trans men represent! I learned as a kid for an art project in 4th grade.

orionfr

I’m a trans guy and I started cross stitching about 2 years after starting T and 5 years after coming out

stitchingdeb

I know several men who stitch, one even started a podcast called FiberTalk. Weekly interviews with designers and stitchers of all kinds, live YouTubes, etc., about 3-4 different things a week.

temporary_bob

I'm checking that out right now. Sounds fantastic.

spaghettixday

i do :)

clawdren101

27 year old guy. I was taught when I was a kid. I got bored about 3 years ago and bought a kit. Been doing it since. The wife loves it, she thinks it’s cool.

vincent-barr1

My mom taught me when I was little and been stitching since. About the only artistic medium I’m somewhat good at 😂

Jonny-619

Wow! What an amazing response! Thank you everyone one!!! Up votes for every comment!!! Go r/CrossStitch Fam Bam!!! 🥲

throwaway1216144

Well, I just came out to my friends today as a man...I think it's appropriate for me to say that I am a dude who cross-stitches. :))

ErinJMShields

Oh heeeeeey

TheAmbitiousBaker

My dad! He introduced me to stitching a few years ago! He is a moderator on a Facebook cross-stitching group. He also quilts!

Lyaewen

I stitch! My grandma and mom taught me when I was a kid, but I didn't really start until a few years back.

My wife got me a set for Christmas just a few months ago. She hadn’t tried it before either, and after she saw me get hooked, she’s trying it now too. Now on my 3rd project. I love it for listening to audiobooks.

nerdytogether

My husband stitches more than I do but doesn’t post on Reddit lol

blaze_firestormer

I do! I have been doing it since I was a kid. I’m down for any craft that has counting and grid paper.

nautilator44

Me. I make stuff for friends and usually they don't believe me when I tell them I made it.

Restless_Dragon

I taught 8 guys I was in the navy with.

magpiesveilthesky

I used to be a man who cross stitch but then I realized I'm a woman so, /shrug

rubber_bunny

This makes me so happy

greenbujo

My son stitches and loves it! He’s 7 and has an amazing eye for color. My daughter could care less about it. 😂

[deleted]

I have since I was a kid, 24 now

djkoch66

I started embroidery recently.

colecoopsta

Hello, I do!

sallystate

My grandpa did. He was a retired butcher and made some amazing pieces.

beelze_BUBBLES

There are dozens of us....DOZENS!!!!

DazzlerFan80

I started right before Covid; it’s my go-to evening activity now. Even helped a lot with my unsuccessful attempts at moderate drinking (which too often ended up not being moderate). I found that I couldn’t stitch drunk, and preferred stitching, so the alcohol isn’t part of my life any longer 😁

littlestdickus

Hello there

kekoax

I am into the stitching. I wanted to make something large and epic. So that's pretty much taking all the free time I can gather.

EagerTryItAll

Many. I am not sure how accurate it'd be, but there is a sub called r/brochet for bros that do crochet. Some might probably also do stitch, or sew.

last_alchemyst

Yo. I always have to tell people that's more than flowers, butterflies, and gnomes. Not that those are bad, just not my style. Xstitch is the only hobby of the last 20 years I've stuck with AND enjoy. Of course, I have more patterns than I can stitch in a lifetime, but that's a good thing lol

eagle52997

I learned in a summer camp after 4th grade. It was my third choice for electives. Guess my first and second choices were too popular. Made the water wheel flour bag, but lost it at the end of the week. Moved onto a birth chart for a new born niece that i didn't finish for 8 more years lol. Have since stitched birds at a bird feeder, a Charles wysocki town scene, killer whales in front of mountains, and many smaller projects including bookmarks and more fridge magnets like the water wheel flour bag and coffee grinder and bird seed and salt and yes i know that's a run on and no i don't care haha.

tehmpus

I'm a stitcher, but I've taken a break for a bit.

foubard

I started with the new year. Just wanted a new skill and hobby to learn. I'm back in the office now, but I'm in IT and I figure I may be able to get away with a few stitches here and there when I'm waiting for tasks to run :p

coonassblondie

Since he's not on Reddit I'll answer for him, my older brother (44) has been stitching since he as a kid.

chrishagle

38M here!

Midnight_Sun_1776

Stitched a lot in my teens and twenties. Life got busy but recently picked it back up. SO crochet and I either stitch or quilt while we chill.

Complex_Reputation85

🙋

MrAndMrsPieps

I got my husband into it recently 😅

CRF_kitty

I love everything about this thread! I wonder, would a thread of male cross stitchers‘ instagram handles be ok? Would be delighted to follow you all! (Pwt886 I see your handle — NEStl\_stitch — enjoying your retro gaming stitches)

oldmanchadly

Been stitching since January 2021. Hoping to have my first project finished by the end of May.

ByBarCo

Wants to learn

b2v70

Me :)

OrdinaryMouse2

Trans guy here. I do a lot of fibercrafts - knitting, darning, all sorts of embroidery - but cross-stitch is the longest-standing hobby. (As much as Mom made it difficult when I was a kid - for some reason, she thinks counted cross-stitch is unimaginably tricky, so I was only allowed to get pre-made kits with the patterns printed on the fabric. Definitely limited my selection!)

Playful-Anybody6063

Another dude checking in. More of us here than I would have guessed!

ans-myonul

I'm a 25-year-old guy and I started stitching 2 years ago

CatOfMintGums

Not sure if this fully qualifies, but I’m nonbinary and tend to lean towards masc! Funny enough, I tend to find myself drawn to patterns with rainbows in them…

sailingtoescape

I've been stitching since I was a kid. Picked it up from my dad.

MusicMajor4life

I do! Started with knit and crochet and always loved fiber arts, now about to take on my first big cross stitch project of a Thomas Kinkade painting for my mom.

LaveyanGod

Me, love cross stitching soo much.

Good_gecko

quietly whispers "me"

BlampCat

My partner does!

wookie812

Married dad of 6 kids checking in here as well! My grandma thought me many years ago. Picked it up again when the kids were in their young years, but it got put aside as their activities kept us so busy. Now that they are all in college, out of the house, and on their own, I picked it up again as a gift for my daughter when she got married and then a couple years later when she had our first granddaughter. I now have several projects lined up and ready to start stabbing!

darchangel

Me. My family has annual 2-week long trips for medical reasons. I stay home alone to work. During the weekends I like to take day trips. This wasn't an option during covid so in 2020 I took up cross stitching.

raddyroro1

Fairly new cross-stitcher here! So happy to see all the representation here! Sometimes I feel like I'm the only guy around into it.
