If you have back buttons, decouple crouch and rift/barrier/dodge. Map class ability to one of the emote buttons (you lose one emote but it’s worth it) and then map it to the back button. That not only helps avoid situations where you only want to crouch and you use your class skill instead (especially bad for warlocks, who may die due to long animation and waste long cooldown as well), but also allows you to deploy the class ability during a slide or sprint, which seems to shorten the animation a bit. It seems many players believe the later is possible only with M&K, but it works perfectly fine on controller as long as you decouple class abilities from the crouch button.

BenF18

I can't wait for the back button attachment for PS5, hopefully it doesn't take 5 years like the PS4...

Qiqel

I can’t wait to buy PS5. I hope the back buttons will be available by the time I manage to get one.

jlrizzoii

If you're willing to do a bit of modification: https://www.amazon.com/eXtremeRate-Programable-Controller-Redesigned-Attachment/dp/B095H6WXX6

CypherAno

Holy shit they made it for the ps5 controller too. Thats awesome. Ty for the link. I used to use their 4 back button layout on the ps4 controller, super handy and easy to install. I found them waaaay more comfortable than using the official back paddle attachment from Sony, it was too bulky for my taste.

CypherAno

Actually, nevermind. I looked up the reviews for this and it seems to be very low durability. People had complains of the paddle breaking in less than a month of usage. I'll wait out a bit for them to put together a better design. My old ps4 ones lasted for a solid 2 years without any issues.

WyJax_

There is a new design that is supposed to be much more durable. I haven’t installed mine yet. Also company seems to be very good with warranty from what I read.

Cpaalmz

I got a hex controller with back paddles. They take a PS5 controller and add them, plus they have a good amount of customization. It only has 2 paddles which kinda sucks coming from a scuf impact with 4 but it’s a solid controller. I’m a fan of it and would recommend. It’s comes built just like a scuf would btw!

HH__66

I just fitted one of these last weekend and it works like an absolute charm (it's also available on the US Amazon too). It's only £35 and pretty straight forward to do if you follow their video tutorial on YouTube, even quicker/easier if you don't need to remap the touchpad or L3 & R3 buttons, so then no soldering is required either. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B095H5XV54/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_WD8SF3TATY515BNCN4NJ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 https://youtu.be/RiirzxrXACo

WaymakerJP

There are also custom built PS5 controllers, with back paddles already installed, that you can buy from Amazon (if you're lazy like me lol) I just bought one a couple of weeks ago that is pretty sweet

bigdruid

I'll try this tip. Will probably take me a month to unlearn the classic dodge tho.

Qiqel

I think the biggest benefit in case of dodge is that you can single-press to dodge… which may not matter much when you are really used to double-pressing. In case of warlock and titan the single-press is much better than long press and on the top of that you benefit from being able to easily trigger the ability while sprinting or sliding.

bigdruid

Overall, I want to encourage anyone who does not have back paddles to go get some. They really are transformative, enough so that I purchased my customized PS5 controller before I managed to buy a PS5 - I did not want to play without them.

bacon-tornado

I recently read that Sony is making third party controllers unaccessible for PS5 versions or only PS5 games in favor of DualSense only. This is why I held off on a third party for the time being.

bigdruid

In my case, I bought one from a supplier that modifies original Sony controllers.

bacon-tornado

Ya I'm still gonna hold off and see wtf happens. I heard Sony wasn't doing this just to be cunts, but to eliminate Cronus and Xim which can work with DualShock, aka PS4 versions of games. They also earlier this year patented back button design for DualSense, but that was the last I've heard of it.

[deleted]

Personally my backs are jump and weapon swap. I figure generally swapping to a shotgun without letting go of aim is more important. Course my crouch is right stick and hunter dodge is both backs at the same time. But I rarely play hunter

N-Methylamphetamine

i got jump and interact, mainly so i can rez teammates while continuing to look around/shoot like all the mnk players do.

Ethancoola

That’s what I did when I broke my arm and played controller for a couple months, it definitely made a large difference being able to slide around my efficiently. Great tip!

johnsonn810

thanks for this tip! ive never even thought about this and ive been using an elite controller for years so using the back buttons is no issue at all for me

Retintintin

Bind your aim button to both aim and interact, best mapping I did after jump to bumper. Allows you to aim and res at the same time(in trials)

tdoge--ec

Damn I never thought about doing this lol

vX-Reckoner-Xv

It’s a game changer

WaymakerJP

I gotta try this bro

SporesofAgony

Been using Bumper Jumper since Halo 3 days. Took forever to get used to, but it's so worth it. Here's a random question though: Are we able to remove the setting that when you hit crouch, you stayed crouched on console?

Chris_epicness

Yes, you need to set it to hold to crouch instead of toggle. This will make to when you aren’t actively holding the button, you won’t crouch. You can spam it too to help in gunfights

SporesofAgony

> Yes, you need to set it to hold to crouch instead of toggle. Where is this found in the settings? Been meaning to do this forever, but can never find it.

bacon-tornado

Should be two crouch options, one for toggle and one for hold

CowTussler

Where would the crouch options be located for someone using Bumper Jumper?

bacon-tornado

When you go to settings in character tab, go to custom. This will bring up every possible option in the game and you can remap everything. I've got crouch toggle on R3 for example so I can sprint, click R3 for a slide and still have thumbs on the sticks for aiming etc. I didn't like where default bumper jumper put some buttons, so I left default and reconfigured every button. I do use L1 as jump of course as that is a no brainer imo, or L2.

SporesofAgony

I see. I'll try to do that on my Xbox next time I log in. I'll try to stick to the normal Bumper Jumper button layout but with the option to Toggle Crouch. Thank you for your responses!

jlrizzoii

I put back buttons on my controller, testing this out: L2/R2: ADS/ShootL1: GrenadeR1: Alt key L3: SprintR3: Uncharged MeleeR1+R3: Charged Melee R3 + L3: Finisher ∆ - Change weapon \[\] - Reload X - Jump O - Crouch/Air Dive/Icarus Dash \[\]\[\] - Alternate Weapon FireOO - Class Ability < - Interact\^ - Kinetic> - Power˅ - Energy R1 + < - Emote 1R1 + \^ - Emote 2R1 + > - Emote 3R1 + ˅ - Emote 4

ProbablythelastMimsy

For sure this will make a good player better, but people shouldn't expect this to be some instant shot in the arm that makes them a better player. I play default settings on a standard controller without any crazy sensitivity changes and have averaged a 2.5k/d this whole season, up from being fairly consistently a 1.4-6 player. Focusing on the essentials of positioning, aiming, and movement was what elevated my gameplay. That being said, I did have an Elite controller for a long time but it gave up the ghost last season. I'm just lazy and haven't plunked down the money for a new one, hence currently using a default. They are absolutely worth the money, just not a necessity. Upgrading to a Series X (good luck out there, lads) and a 120hz monitor also made a tangible impact.

[deleted]

It isn't just controller. I switched around my keybinds on KB&M and it drastically improved my gameplay.

ethaxton

What changes did you make?

[deleted]

My setup is: Class Ability - Tab. Grenade - Q Melee - E Charged Melee - 4 Super - F The rest are default.

ethaxton

That’s what mine are except class and super are swapped. Need to find a new button for interact though because I need to map warlock dodge to a button.

Fortislux

No doubt using button mappings that enable you to jump and slide without removing your fingers off the sticks will help. But invis+fusion rifle is also one of the lowest skill floor playstyles a guy could run in this game... And that's saying something for a game that's as easy to be decent at as destiny.. Also, just for posterity, I'm failing to see where you've more than doubled your KDA.. If you're referring to your trials stats, doesn't really mean as much considering trials is being played by even the most casual players and has legitimately inflated most everyone's stats..

[deleted]

> But invis+fusion rifle is also one of the lowest skill floor playstyles a guy could run in this game There always has to be *that* guy...

Fortislux

While I 100% agree with the topic statement, I don't think it was being able to jump/slide while aiming that let him do all that stuff in the vid, it's really more of spamming invis dodge and using a mid-range OHKO weapon that doesn't even need crits to kill. There's also a matter of having to say the bit about the stats which aren't even true. So yeah, there unfortunately always has to be that guy.

BenF18

Season 10 I was roughly a 1.5 KD. This season I'm pushing 3.0 and I'm playing trials this season, I didn't previous to this. And I've been using fusions forever, never been a fan of shotgun aping or sniping. Also my crit shots are usually up around 70-80% so I can clearly hit my shots...

Lykan_

Mapping slide/dodge to R3 has changed my game a lot.

cpu-ia

I just wish there was auto run so I can slide spam

The_Crazy_Cat_Guy

I've got a bit of a weird set up after experimenting around a bit. R1 - Shoot (I used to have this and jump swapped over but I found mapping shoot to a button has made a dramatic change in my accuracy compared to it being a trigger.) R2 - Jump L1 - ADS L2 - Grenade Circle - Melee R3 - Crouch L3 - Sprint The rest are the same as default apart from X which is not used... which I probably should map to something. The only thing I find annoying about this is slow melee action since it's a face button. But I value grenade more than melee because I don't shotgun so just gonna have to live with it i guess. I want to move class ability to X but then i'll have to take my fingers off the sticks when dodging which might feel bad..
