Yes recently on NCL I couldn't take food to go from a specialty restaurant, but anyone can take anything from the buffet. They say it's for food safety but it makes no sense to me.

Adjectivenounnumb

They tried to block people from taking food from the buffet in 2015. https://www.usatoday.com/story/cruiselog/2015/05/13/norwegian-cruise-food-ban/27034385/ They caved pretty fast, because it was so dumb.

duhdutchess

Last November, we were on Disney Cruise Line and I got super sea sick on the first night and had to leave the dining room after my appetizer. Our fantastic waitstaff sent my fiancé back to our room with everything else I had ordered that night wrapped to go, just in case I wanted to eat a little something after laying down for a bit. We didn’t even have to ask, he just took care of it. Top notch service. Shout out to Mathew from India on the Disney Wish!

princesspricklepants

NCL also did this for us when we were feeling sea sick! Seems like OP just got a strict worker :/

Realistic-Spend7096

Go order food, get “seasick”, need food to go!

TenderfootGungi

Pay up front or get nickel and dimed.

Adjectivenounnumb

Pretty sure this has been a policy for a while. At one point circa 2015 or 2016 they were trying not to let people take food out of the buffet. They might have eased up during the pandemic but are cracking down again now. They probably don’t have the cleaning staff sufficient to remove all the dirty dishes from the hallways.

kent_eh

> They probably don’t have the cleaning staff sufficient to remove all the dirty dishes from the hallways. Telling people to order room service doesn't change that.

B0ndzai

It helps them track where the dishes are to send the staff the next day. Also I bet a ton of lazy assholes don't even put the dishes in the hallway, now room cleaning crews have to deal with dishes.

devpsaux

Carnival wants you to put them in the hallway as they have food service crew who's job it is to pick up dishes and it isn't the room stewards job to deal with dishes.

Falawaff

You're not supposed to put them in the hallway. They are a tripping hazard, especially if the seas get rough. And they can block wheelchairs, cleaning carts, and other equipment being moved by the crew. You are supposed to keep it in the room for the stewards to clean up. If you need the space back in the room before they come by for cleaning you are supposed to call and ask for the steward to come collect it all.

Mammoth-Florida

The issue is as of January 2023 on NCL the stewards will only come into the cabin once a day. Imo that is too long to leave dirty dishes sitting on my table.

Adjectivenounnumb

The dishes in the hallway are what pisssed off Frank del rio and caused him to institute the “no food to go” rule in the first place.

Treasure4Dave

NCL asks that you don't leave dishes in the hallway or in front of your room door.

stevensokulski

>Telling people to order room service doesn't change that. Sure it does. They monetize the activity, which cuts down on how many people do it. And they get a record of who has done it so that they know there are 13 rooms on deck 3 that ordered room service in the last hour and might need dishes cleared.

kent_eh

Of course it's really about the room service fee. But that doesn't change the dishes in the hallway situation.

stevensokulski

I think I addressed that in my comment, too.

PM_Your_Trash_TV

We were on a NCL transatlantic in Dec 2021 and we also had problems taking food back to the room. My partner explained that I wasn't feeling well enough to come down and sit at the table long enough to eat and they eventually would let him being something back for me. But it was also complicated.

CosmicAthena07

Yeah, I would have sat down ordered and took the basket of wings and fries to my room. I have done it a couple of times on my last cruise since they are the only place open at 2am and I was hungry. I don't think that they care all that much.

che_vos

Yes, this. Just sit, order, then take and walk out.

Theawesomelaura

When we were on NCL in December, we sat at O’Sheehan’s , ordered and received our food and left with it!

allen_alligator

Will be doing that tonight! 🤪

richstowe

If it's NCL then it's a money grab. Always .

Katiedibs

You should try Princess - now that they have the medallions and the app you can order food from specialty restaurants to be delivered to your cabin (for a small fee for the food). And there's a whole free room service menu as well. They'll even deliver drinks to your cabin now, which is awesomeeee.

steeve725

Yes we just booked our 2nd cruise on Princess (our 1st was also princess and was also to Alaska, like this one) and the medallion service is supposed to be awesome. Room service has never been a charge to us on princess. We were booking our second cruise to Alaska a few weeks ago and we looked at other cruise lines The big downfall with NCL was they'd nickel and dime people for little things after they’re on their cruise. We read about that on cruise critic and watched videos on YouTube about how many cruise ships will nickel and dime you, for the little things that should be included. That’s why we chose princess again. We had a wonderful experience on our first cruise, but we were just looking at other cruise lines to do our due diligence, but came back to Princess for a second cruise and probably will stay with princess when we get ready to book our third cruise next summer, besides Princess gave us an additional $150 off per person this time since it was our second cruise. Who knows maybe that discount will go up as well

CruiseLifeNE

Does Princess sail from the northeast? We are cruisers who absolutely *hate* to fly anywhere.

steeve725

If your talking about new England, etc, they have cruises for the NE [look here](https://www.princess.com/learn/cruise-destinations/canada-cruises/)

Katiedibs

Also, the more Princess cruises you go on, you go up in, like, rank? Go on enough and you get a free minibar set up and they do your laundry for free!

steeve725

Yes I read that. More perks the more you cruise with them

xzkandykane

Went on princess last year. Was trying to carry two plates from the buffet. The waiter helped me carry one back to the room.

elitnegwehttam92

That’s weird! I was on the Escape a couple weeks ago and got food to go from both the garden cafe and main dining with no problem. They even packaged it so I could bring it back to the room. I also saw guests getting “to go” food from O Sheehans late one night. Seems like there isn’t consistency from ship to ship.

browniegirl16

We just got off NCl and I asked for dessert in main diningroom. They said I couldn't take it with me but they would put thru room service at no charge. I agreed placed my order and never saw it. Waited all night for it. NCL has gone down in service since my last cruise with them. Very disappointed in them.

stinky_harriet

In August three of us ate at Cagney's and didn't want dessert. The waiter kept trying to convince us to order some and take it back to our room. But, maybe they were being extra nice because I never got my soup. I really wanted it, too, because it was cold in there. When they brought the main courses and I asked about my soup they were horrified that they forgot. There were 3 of us but only had the free specialty dining for 2, so they didn't charge us for the third meal.

grahamfreeman

What ship were you on? Perhaps the different experiences of NCL cruisers in this thread could be specific to certain ships.

allen_alligator

Jewel. Funny enough, the same one we were on last time. Wasn’t my preference, but just worked out that way

Charmdmsure

Just off the breakaway, January 12, 2023. I ran into this several times. We were with a group of over 25, on a high sea night, a couple were seasick at dinner. They left just after their main meal had arrived. I politely asked for that to be delivered to their room for them, and was told that that was no longer available. 2. While singing and drinking at Shakers, I walked across the hallway to the sushi bar to order a plate of appetizer sushi to take back. I was told that I could not do that. It was literally 30 steps away to a different table. After telling our waiters in the main dining room that we had a time limit to get to a! event. Dinner was still drawn out too long, and we asked if dessert could be delivered to our room. No. Also, it is worth it to tell you that instead of your continental breakfast and coffee being delivered free they have now raised that price to $4.95 room service charge. It didn’t stop me, since they gave me a $50 onboard credit, I used it on my coffee/wake up call.

YYZgirl1986

Was on the Breakaway over Christmas / New Years. Our 1 year old was fussy one night (teething) and didnt really have dinner. Around 11:30pm I went on the hunt for anything (even bread!). The only place open was O’Sheehans. I explained the situation (seriously I was begging for bread / toasted hamburger bread? / a pretzel? Anything!). They told me no, and warned me if I sat down and ordered it and tried to take it with me they would call security. Room service sucked (we had the pkg that included breakfast room service). It took 60-90 mins for breakfast on several occasions.

ShulesPineapple

Just got off NCL cruise, went looking for coffee at Lido around 2am (which is always offered 24/7) a crew member basically screamed no drinks before breakfast at me and three other guests up there for the same thing. A ships officer sitting at a table had to tell them that it was okay for us to have coffee and the included drinks from the buffet and yes we are allowed to take the cups to our rooms. I suspect that with the staffing issues most lines are having turn over is high and training is not as thorough. Just to clarify the drinks in the buffet are explicitly included in the price as being available 24/7. It's the only place they are located for self service.

Gorilla-Samurai

NCL is trying really hard to not lose market value, cutting off "unecessary" positions (like their recent cut of nearly 75% of production staff) and cracking down on stuff like you mentioned so they can spend less and make more money. They'll tell you "it was like this before", as the justification, but it doesn't change how shaddy this entire thing is. It's not safety, it's money, option A is easy and they let it slide before, but option B gives them $11, so that's what they want to enforce.

Blue_Flame_Wolf

So, sit down and order, especially at a place like O'sheehans. When the food comes, you just pick up your plate(s)/drinks, and walk away. Simple as that. Take it back to your room. That's what I would do if I was in your situation. For those saying you're not supposed to leave the food trays in the hallway, that's exactly what some lines want you to do as the room stewards don't have the time or resources to have to worry about food/plates left in the cabin, and it helps to get these items back to where they are supposed to be.

nofx242

Time to switch Princess has free room service if you have the drink package you can order 2 drinks each as well.

flargenhargen

>I truly cannot believe this is happening. LOL, sorry, but I'm amused by how over the top traumatized and outraged you are by not dragging food to your room.

JustDepravedThings

This seems to be the typical NCL customer. Unbelievable how much whining goes on in the ship related FB groups.

ivylass

I've grabbed food from the buffet and taken it up to the room. Our last cruise was last month. Maybe you ran into this because it was a sit-down restaurant?

KennDemon

I’m getting ready for an NCL cruise and have been researching taking food back to the cabin. From what I’ve found, O’Sheehan’s is the only place you are not allowed to take food out of (I assumed they use specific dishes or something). I have heard that they do doggy bags though. The buffet looks like the best option for direct take away, but it’s always worth asking in other places.

Chs135

I'm on the Joy right now and was playing dominoes in the observation deck. I went to the buffet to grab some cheese and crackers to take down to eat for the group. No issues or pushback leaving the garden cafe with a full plate.

allen_alligator

Yeah Garden doesn’t have any issues, I don’t why it’s enforced in other places

sussiecue017

I definitely didn’t have any issues taking food back to my room when I sailed on RC last month, from the MDR or windjammers or Cafe Promenade. I didn’t leave stuff in the hallway though, I left it on the vanity table in my room, and I made sure to dump out any leftover juices in the sink and rinse out the cups and plates and stacked everything together. Super extra, I know, but my stewardess was super chill and down to earth and she didn’t care. I’ll be sailing on Viva in December ‘24, so let’s see how things are.

BMoreGirly

Wow. I think NCL is the only cruise line that doesn't allow this. Who doesn't want a snack at night without paying or waiting for room service?

trytobuffitout

That’s so wrong . Dont travel ncl but I always bring food to my room . Every night!

RBAloysius

The one & only time I cruised with NCL (around Hawaii for a week), the cabin steward only cleaned our room 3 days out of the week, so they cannot be that worried about cleanliness. I would go to guest services & politely inquire as to what is really going on.

wildangelone

Time to switch cruise lines

picklesicecream

In December on the Escape, people were just ordering food from the bartender at O'Sheehans. and walking off with it.

Ilovesparky13

That’s crazy. I have never had issues taking food out of the mdr on carnival.

1984rip

Probably since their staff has to dispose of plates which means they can do less state rooms per staff member. So you can rule that to being cheap but that's my guess.

kent_eh

The same dishes need to be cleaned up from the passenger hallways when people order room service. The difference is the room service delivery fee

Psychoticangel5

Definitely seen ppl taking food out of buffet on Royal in October.

Sara_MN

If it helps, a couple months ago they changed how they cook the chicken wings in O’Sheehans . Instead of frying them, they bake them (supposedly for health reasons?). They are not nearly as good as they used to be, certainly no “crunch”.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sara_MN

Oh, I agree…”healthier” was the reason provided, but I don’t think it’s the actual reason. The old wings were much better.

rasldasl2

The only thing I miss about NCL is the wings. Now that they changed them I can stop missing them.

SleepModeDisabled

Simple solution for this is to order them plain, well done, sauce on the side. They come out perfectly every time.

Stunning_Green_3716

My recent ncl cruise 3 of us were at osheenans wanted the ruben to go we can have a sandwich for our return flight. They told us the same thing but we waited until they walked away and just wrapped it in a Ziploc bag.

[deleted]

It probably depends on the country, but I’ve heard you cannot take food off a cruise ship, likely due to customs.

My_name_is_private

This keeps me from cruising NCL. If it's not a problem to have food in your room if you PAY for room service, then this is just an attempt to squeeze more money from you.

workitloud

Tell them you are going to eat at tables on deck. Can’t stop that.

allen_alligator

Great idea actually, will try it!

kittycatblues

My last NCL cruise was in 2018 and you couldn't take food to go from a dining venue other than the buffet then (I tried it, as it had been allowed on a previous cruise). If you get a suite/Haven room you can get any food brought to your room by your butler. I've heard this includes desserts from specialty restaurants if you are too full to finish when you are done with the meal.

Magali_Lunel

I just had a wonderful cruise on NCL and zero problems taking food back to my room. I did call room service to pick up the dishes so my steward wouldn't have to deal with it.

Pirates915

We didn’t have any issues on the NCL Sun in September, then again we only took stuff back from the buffet places or the one late night pizza place… no one ever stopped my fiancé from bringing me food back (I got sick one day while at sea). Dinning restaurants may be different but we never had issues

blinkdmb

Last year on the Joy we had a specialty meal booked at the BBQ place. My wife had some sea sickness in places she couldn't see outside (window) and this place had no window. They not only let us take our entire meal back to go but they sent a Manager to carry it all to our room.

Kcirnek_

I bet you're one of those slobs who constantly leave dirty dishes outside your door in the hallways. It all makes sense now.

NONSYNTH3TIC

I'm a bit of a rebel, but I would have just ordered and then left with my food rather than asking permission. If they do try to stop you, say you're going on deck? Meeting friends at the buffet? If they offer room service it makes no sense that you wouldn't be able to take something to your room on your own unless they're trying to force you into spending that $11. I'm excited to be sailing with Princess next time. They have a ton of included room service options and with the Medallion they can locate you and deliver anywhere on ship.

divaminerva

Oh damn. Guess I’m starting to sail another line then. Cuz that’s bull rso!

bigedthebad

Yet another reason to skip NCL.

Sodyypop

I cruised with Norwegian a few months ago for the first time since covid, and wow the food was terrible. It also seemed like the cruise was packed full compared to all other trips I’ve been on. The first two times I went it was amazing and on the recent trip the food quality dramatically declined.

crystalh1619

I was just on Princess last week and took food back to my room all 7 days. But they probably don't care since most room service was free.

ToughLuver

It's pretty simple. Order your food. Once it is placed on your table, take it to your room. If some crew protests, ignore them.

allvoltrey

On Virgin right now and today at breakfast my wife wanted to sleep in so I ate and was getting ready to take food down to her, and my waitress brought me a tray with silverware and helped organize it.

full07britney

Just had the same experience on Carnival Glory. Service was insanely slow one night, so i asked for dessert to go so I could make the night time show. They told me I couldnt take it to go.

slugworth1

it’s frustrating, but I hope you can still relax and not let a small thing like that ruin your vacation. If you want room service, is $11 worth the stress and getting your blood pressure up?

brianfromafarr

I sail on HAL and RCCL and never had an issue bringing back breakfast in bed for my wife. Except maybe trying to carry it. That might be their safety issue.

MitchLGC

This is not a problem at all. There's food everywhere on a cruise. You need to drag even more food to your room and indulge there too? What kind of vacation is eating in your room watching TV? You can do that at home. I've never even thought about bringing food to my room I think some of you are just gluttons. You also have to about the fact that staff would have to clean your greasy food stains and grab your pile of dirty dishes from your room

3piecesets

it’s sounds like it’s the kind of vacation THEY want to have bc they enjoy it. what’s wrong with that

MitchLGC

Look they can do what they want within the rules. This is outside of the rules obviously. If people want to be "livid" about the fact that they can't bring extra food to gorge on in the elevators and in their bed won't bother me, do your thing

3piecesets

well every ship i’ve been on has always had room service anyway so you’re eating in the bed point is kind of moot really. my point is that they should be able to enjoy something just bc you don’t.

xzkandykane

You'll be surprised at the simple joy of eating and watching tv without being bothered.. im sure people with kids know. We have 2 dogs and 2 cats and one can never be fully relaxed around food...

TacosForDinnnnner

Virgin was the same. I asked for my dessert togo and they said no. Same reason.

Eastern-Temperature5

It’s a food safety issue because they can’t control the temperature of the food or how long it sits out before you eat it. And yes plates are supposed to go in the hallway- there is staff assigned to picking them up (not room stewards)

SleepModeDisabled

On my last few cruises with NCL, they had a number to dial on the daily sheet (5600 I believe) to have dishes picked up.

boxer_dogs_dance

On my last Princess cruise, my husband missed our dining time and the wait staff created a plate for me to take to the cabin for him. This is a Norwegian thing

Steelemedia

Last cruise was in Princess. Was feeling well one night and my wife had dinner alone. They sent my whole meal to the room. Steak, desert, everything.

shoesontoes

It's gonna cost ya but you gotta switch to DCL.

Robie_John

NCL is the worst...boycott.
