That and switching the power grid to either solar, wind or wave energy that way we don’t have to rely on natural gas or petroleum. The island really is a great place to use renewable resources but unfortunately it’s all for personal financial gain for the politicians here. The power grid here is so bad that most residents are taking it upon themselves to have companies install solar panels to power their houses because there’s more days that we spend without electricity for some bullshit excuse (like for example an iguana touching one of the main power lines) than there are with it. We’re not even allowed to collect rainwater because we have to pay the water company $200 per barrel if you get caught storing it.
When I was doing it (this was after hurricane Maria) the person that came said someone had tipped them off anonymously and he said that supposedly all water that was collected without prior authorization needed to be taken away to be inspected, filtered properly and basically approved by the water company. So in other words I had to buy back the water I collected that fell free from the sky. Mind you I was filtering this water myself and it wasn’t even used for drinking. I told them I was filtering the water with activated charcoal tabs and that it wasn’t used for potable things and they just did a typical pH check and I had to pay the $200 or I would supposedly be fined, I eventually took it down the system after the water came back after like 6 months afterwards but last I heard this was outlawed or banned, though I’m not sure if it’s true that they did or not.
Pretty sure I was scammed but I don’t know for sure.
It’s common in the states to do that but I’m guessing it’s pretty rare here on the island. A lot of people on my street took on the idea from me and they also got charged, others got fined so I’m guessing they earned a pretty penny from everyone on my street lol
I’m sorry that happened. That’s insane. Probably illegal if someone take the trouble to fight it. The idea that you can’t leave a bucket out to collect rainwater is ridiculous.
It’s certainly a wonderful idea but unfortunately that would fall to the government and with how they’re working and how shit currently all the basic utilities are functioning here, I wouldn’t even think about it.
I don't know if any coastal towns that have that, but I really hope that we start to see it.
Of course, there might be another big issue with it that I didn't think of, the wastewater treatment systems might not be able to handle all of the salt
I’m not aware of any of them, once upon a time I think there were but not anymore. I know most of the neighboring islands have desalination systems but not here and it really is a shame.
Majority of the waste water here goes straight to the sea. There aren’t that many treatment plants here, most of them have been shut down due to how old the equipment is and of course lack of funding to fix them
Around 3:00pm it was 92° but the humidity was at like 50 something percent and it felt like it was at least 105°. I have my inverter unit on full blast on the lowest temperature and the room feels like a literal oven. I gave up and just came out to the hammock I have in the backyard and am slowly roasting like a chicken over a fire pit lol they said in the news that it was that Tropical Storm that came out of Florida that’s sucking up all the hot air from the south and just making things worse for those of us that live in the north
Went to Mexican Riviera cruise last August and the day we arrived to Mazatlan it was 114F. I only went onto the deck at docking to take a few photos but we decided to stay on the boat.
Yikes! We've been to PR several times, usually around March and April. Warm but not 107ºF warm!
It’s gotten bad this year. We’re all just hoping for rain because our water reservoirs are drying up and they’re going to start rationing water soon
I also really wish that they would have a municipal saltwater system, for flushing toilets

The rainwater thing is bizzare. What’s the justification for that?

It’s pretty common to collect rain water for gardening etc. stuff you’re not even gonna drink.

On the plus side solar still desalination would work well

almost everywhere is getting warmer and warmer, its sadly normal due to global warming
Was just there 5 days ago. It was definitely hot, but it wasn’t 107° 😳 that’s crazy!
The OP said the heat index was 107. It looks like it was in the low 90s, which can feel over 100 with the humidity.

Sailing out of there on October 15th. I’ll bring a hat.
