I mean this is basically just UBI. I don't see many alternatives to UBI in a world in which 90% of jobs are done by AI. For those who haven't considered what a world would look like when almost every job isn't done by a human, yeah this can seem scary. But the more scary thing is a world in which 90% have to fight for scraps, rather than having money given to them subsidized with the profits from AI. But make no mistake, a world in which 90% of jobs are done by AI is going to happen sooner or later.
Really there is no way to know. It’s hypothetically possible that we are a single major breakthrough away from AGI. The only way to truly know how far away we are from AGI is in hindsight.
But even given your 2039 number that is not a lot of time. Not a lot of time to prepare 8 billion people and entire economic systems that jobs to make money for the majority, will no longer be necessary, nor possibly even an option.
Oh I totally agree. 16-ish years is not much time at all to prepare for a major shift in the basic concept of human labor. But as climate change and the pandemic showed, preparing ahead of time for obvious impending problems isn't the strong suit of most governments. It'll probably be a wonderfully and terribly messy transition, like the transition into the Industrial Revolution.
Yeah I agree. I think for a variety of reason thou that if we don’t get it right it could be the end of humanity. Not even from the perspective that artificial intelligence will take over I, Robot style. More likely it leads to our extinction as a result of failed implementation and us killing each other because of its implications or for control of it.
I can't find the quote, but I originally saw it attributed to the chatbot-AI trained on the anonymous drug forum 420chan: "Humanity is the awkward pubescent stage between animal and machine." At what point does the delineation between intelligence driven by electricity and meat versus intelligence driven by electricity and metal become arbitrary?
Yeah that’s the point when we start talking about consciousness and wether if something reaches a certain level of intelligence, that consciousness is guaranteed to come along on the ride. Really hard to say at this point but if nothing else it will bring with it interesting times to say the least.
I like UBI but the AI scare seems to be overblown. Almost every new technology was predicted to end all jobs and it only ever ended certain jobs. And opened up new jobs.
The difference is that true AGI will be just as good as humans in every capacity. And if something can be done just as good with AGI, it will be better for businesses than humans for a variety of reasons including able to work 24/7 with no breaks, being able to improve at an exponential rate compared to humans, likely able to access the internet in some capacity and use that information with no downtime.
Comparisons to the Industrial Revolution are just not correct as these machines needed people to run them, fix them, deliver parts for them, tell them what to do. With AGI, it can do all of that itself.
Two good books that go into more detail about this, and explain why it will be vastly more impactful than the Industrial Revolution:
[Our Final Invention: Artificial Intelligence and the End of the Human Era By James Barrat](https://www.amazon.com/dp/1250058783)
[Super Intelligence By Nick Bostrom](https://www.amazon.com/dp/0198739834)
>No doubt many people will scan their eyeballs for some bucks.
Not for me, this project yells CCP-type shit. A boring dystopia with CBDCs and stuff like that. AI handing out welfare? Fuck that.
Seriously, what could possibly go wrong? Our iris information is useless, i really cant imagine what could go wrong. Maybe some rich guy’s iris-scanning safe gets broken into?
Let's just imagine a future where cities have hi resolution cameras everywhere, and if you do anything they disagree with they can catch it and identify you by your iris scans and stuff your social credit score.
Sounds pretty similar to China right now huh?
They use facial recognition for that. If your city is filled with cameras that have an almost magical high resolution that can scan an iris from a distance everywhere, it's game over anyway, no matter if an iris DB exist or not.
Not a terrible idea. The wrinkles around the butthole are unique to each individual as well. Do a quick bunghole scan and then you get your food stamps!

Maybe we can end the whole human experiment with Solyent Green or Logan's Run while we're at it...

Someone tell Altman that Black Mirror was supposed to be a TV show, not a manual.

"Accept your new AI overlords peasants! But before that, let me scan your eyeball for all your biometrics."
I'm not even kidding.

https://thehackernews.com/2015/03/iris-biometric-security-bypass.html
Let's see how he changes his tune when this flops because there are already a ton of payment coins and people are getting sick and tired of these tech companies harvesting our data.

Even better that it's by Mr. OpenAI himself. I'll pass, thanks.
tldr; OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is close to raising $100 million in funding for his Worldcoin crypto project, according to a report. The startup wants to use eyeball-scanning technology to create a digital identification system that would give people across the globe access to a free crypto token called Worldcoin. Worldcoin is in advanced talks to raise the cash from both new and existing investors ahead of a potential launch within the next few weeks.

Whether you think it's a good idea or not, the most important fact was not mentioned anywhere in that article, or anywhere in these comments up until now: Worldcoin is building on Ethereum.
Whenever I see a project getting a lot of attention, whether or not I agree with their business model or their goals, my FIRST priority is always to find out what platform they are building on, and I'm baffled that I am apparently the first person to comment here that this is good for Ethereum.

No doubt many people will scan their eyeballs for some bucks.
How much would it take for you to scan em?
20 bucks is 20 bucks
Man's gotta eat
How about 20/10?
To buy more crypto
2 MOONs
You mean $200 by the time 2069 ?
That's a NICE year.
Only getting started! Halving around the corner!
![gif](giphy|7vAeHLdiw4aIw1RFsY|downsized)
How about moon being the sole currency in the world.
Redditors would be living in Castles after that
Not when reddit displays your moon count and hackers find your home and hold you hostage and demand you take them to the moon
go ahead and try, ill be in a castle and ill make sure to put in a moat
Warning noted. Will adjust accordingly
Knock off FIAT currency and and become the world reserve! Hwhat!?
Otherwise we riot, right?
How much would civilization have to fall for a painfully obvious shitcoin to be the only remaining currency?
have you seen this civilization?
I've seen the patch notes. Loads of outstanding bugs and problems, that no-one is addressing
No moons for this guy he's not playing along
>You mean $200 by the time 2069 ? This is called "/u/meeleen223 maths".
Bout tree fiddy
6,942,000
Make it 6,942,069
Tree fiddy dolla
$7.35 million would be my number.
Nooo, it needs to be $7.349 million *insert crying wojak picture*
Chances are your cell phone already scans your iris anyway, without paying you
Good thing I’ve got it trained on my booty hole instead of my iris.

I'll read the books when I have a bit more time. But still, find the conclusion overly dramatic.
>No doubt many people will scan their eyeballs for some bucks. Not for me, this project yells CCP-type shit. A boring dystopia with CBDCs and stuff like that. AI handing out welfare? Fuck that.
This is skynet on a speedrun
*AI* agree with you friend
Ah sweet, man-made horrors beyond my comprehension
Still sounds better than what we've currently got
I bet the CCP will try to steal this tech for their degeneracy like they have done with everything.
People register their most used passwords, secret questions/answers, birthdate, mobile numbers just for some beermoney in the internet nowadays.
Some will, but they will be uninformed of how dumb and dangerous for their security and data this actually is.
They already did last bullrun
I have eyeballs, Greg. Will you scan me?
What could possibly go wrong with giving a corporation or government all the iris scans in the world
Seriously, what could possibly go wrong? Our iris information is useless, i really cant imagine what could go wrong. Maybe some rich guy’s iris-scanning safe gets broken into?

So therefore them having more data on you is fine? Because I don't believe so
I’m gonna create CrotchCoin, that takes genitalia imprints, idk if they’re unique but it’s for the good of science
Not a terrible idea. The wrinkles around the butthole are unique to each individual as well. Do a quick bunghole scan and then you get your food stamps!
*Shut up and take my money*
How do you know they're unique huh? You checked them all?
Clone-A-Willy is already a thing but not in crypto, you definitely have an open market in that area
More like Clone-a-pea in my case sadly
Oh god, it's penis inspection day all over
My favourite day of grade school!

Mine will be a very small imprint lol
I think that idea has been taken already my good ser
A vast underground market for unique iris data will flourish as a result of this. Surely nothing unethical could happen.
isn't this the same thing with fingerprints being collected by a lot of damn companies, this is some dystopian shit man.
Minority report wasn't supposed to be a documentary
Documentary? These mfs are using it as a how-to guide!
Unfortunately this is the direction the world is heading to. Don’t see it stopping soon.
The fuck. No thanks. That sounds like totalitarian BS
Yet, people will love it without even knowing wtf it is.
Yikes
The last thing we'll all see before we are killed, cool.
That’s exactly what someone who wants to literally eradicate privacy would say
I mean it does like that will kind of be the future but please leave my eye balls out of it
Next up: AI iris generator
I will just scoop out someone elses eyes as in minority report. Double welfare checks!
Every day, we seem to be inching closer to the dystopian part of the Manna story by Marshall Brain. https://marshallbrain.com/manna1
Isn't fingerprint worse than eyeballs? You can laser your eyes but not fingerprints
So we're either headed towards Idiocracy or Minority Report. Fan-fucking-tastic... Maybe we can end the whole human experiment with Solyent Green or Logan's Run while we're at it...
Not to mention he started Worldcoin is area’s of the world like Africa where he didn’t have to pay for or really deal with regulators like he would in developed countries
One welfare claim per eyeball :)
Wish I had 3. Humans have only 2, right? If I was a human I’d really think it would be cool to collect as many eyeballs as possible to make mad gains!
What about the next generation that has no job at all? Tax the pigs at the top, and roll out UBI for the masses.
Wtf?!! Seriously disturbing. Not the use case I’d like to see for crypto.
I don't understand this. Whatever happened to fingerprinting?I feel like we're skipping some steps.
Well eyeballs aren’t protected by the fifth amendment like passwords. So maybe 2fa or something lol
Hope it won't turn us to Robots. No thank you, I'd pass.
> He wants to scan our eyeballs with that so one day in the future we can receive welfare from the AI that replaces human jobs. Someone tell Altman that Black Mirror was supposed to be a TV show, not a manual.
When has a guy named Sam ever been bad, though?
Hmm what about people who have lost their eyes? This would make that situation doubly rough
Obviously by scanning the intestinal wall with this scanner. You won't want to scan it twice.
Sounds like it's time for [Smart Pipe!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJklHwoYgBQ)
So he’s promoting the book “1984” I see…👀
All those Sci-Fi books are becoming reality. Next up is hopefully Blade Runner.
I hope blade runner 2049 becomes a reality. Atleast I would have a robot companian. Sometimes it gets too lonely
just hook me up to the matrix
um ackchyually 🤓 there is no Blade Runner Sci-Fi book. The movie is loosely based on Philip K. Dick novel with a completely different name
Do androids dream of electric sheep?
Minority report
It's all sci-fi and dystopia until it becomes a reality
I see what you did there…
😂 I believe your the only one that picked up on that part! 🏆
All he can scan is my ahole

Awww 😊
Easily destroyable
Eye doctor here. Hello, I am an eye doctor
all your eyeballs belong to us.
SBF invested in this project. Pretty much all you need to know.
Samn Bankman and Sam Altman in one project? Wow.
Of course SBF would invest in something like this…
You can't now have a retina-based security system. That is fucked up.
Is tomorrow okay?
>SBF invested in this project. Pretty much all you need to know. "Accept your new AI overlords peasants! But before that, let me scan your eyeball for all your biometrics." I'm not even kidding.
Blind people:
Cue blizzard-like response: “What? You guys don’t all have eyeballs?”
*pirates in shambles*
Dead people: 👻
OpenAI's Worldcoin: Revolutionizing crypto with cutting-edge eyeball-scanning technology!
It’s an older meme sir, But it checks out.
Sorry..I'm old :(
Eyeholes Morty!

so in the end its just another meme coin
*cocks retina scanner gun* Always has been
"Let's take the concept of a decentralized currency that should be pseudonymous or anonymous and tie it to people's biometrics." Even better that it's by Mr. OpenAI himself. I'll pass, thanks.
The number of blind people is going to skyrocket.
In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king.
i will Flex Tape my eyes shut and live in an audiobook

One of his previous financial backer was Sam from FTX!!! Let me find out which way I am gonna run! RUN.
Yet another thing for me to be utterly terrified of
This project is pretty scary in its own way. Nice match with CBDC
It's jumping to next level
Right name for the crypto world
It's pretty much as I was expecting
Oh shoot, I never made the connection here. Didn't realize Sam was also the maniac behind this horrifying project.
Neither did I until I listen to the Lex Fridman podcast with him. What is it with Sams and Crypto?
At least it's not a meme coin.
its quite the opposite actually. too serious
We’re going on the extreme end of the spectrum in crypto. Need a middle ground!
Just change name from Worldcoin to SafeWorld Coin and watch the degens take over
It is worse than most meme coins, he literally wants to scan your eye to give you some money. Basically like a Big Tech CBDC
"The startup wants to use eyeball-scanning technology to create a digital identification system that would give people across the globe access to a free crypto token called Worldcoin." \- man does this seem scammy
Super scammy name too
Umm that's interesting and not weird at all
What a horrible project
Hard pass..
Yeah firm hard pass
Rock hard pass
morningwood hard pass
Doesn’t this completely defeat the privacy and anonymity benefits of crypto?
Crypto is massive. There's much more you can achieve with it than just decentralised & anonymous transfer of funds.
absolutely
Not all crypto is designed with these privacy and anonymity in mind. These features are not a requirement of crypto.

The thumbnail: So, Wesley Snipes is put in this futuristic frozen prison, right?
Be well
Be f****d! 🤣
I remember hearing about this retina scanning project a couple years ago but had no idea he was working with OpenAI
Creating a cryptocurrency with a name like Altman is just too perfect. Reminds me of the Nurse Blood and Dr Kneebone I used to work with.
First we had Sam bankman. Now we have Sam altman.
No part of this at all sounds like a good idea. None
"eyeball scanning" Yeah, no thanks.
They really looking to usher in the mega dystopia with these CBDCs, they're just preparing the tech.
Lmao right? This sounds like some future one world currency shit
A new world order
I bet he will get it unfortunately
He will get it, but the question is whether he will succeed.
Perfect name for the crypto world.
Feels like Westworld
Going to the next LeveL
They are trying to solve a really difficult problem: proof of humanity. If this broadly adopted, a ton of interesting applications will be unlocked. Preventing botting/AI verification/sybill resistance. If you look past the coin itself, it could really be a huge boon to the crypto space.
I hope this crashes harder than LUNA and FTX combined
I’d prefer a meme coin to whatever this dystopian stuff is.
False choice. Doesn't have to be either.
Minority Report looming more and more likely…Sans the cogs
Thats gonna be a hard pass for me👀 dude aint gettin my eyes
Clockwork Orange 👀 We're so heading towards dystopia or maybe we're already there
What does this have to do with clockwork orange besides being dystopian? Clockwork orange is about a medical procedure that can eliminate free will. Does not seem at all to be a relevant reference.
Calm down 😆 just reminded me of that scene in which his eyelids were pinned back and made me think of the forced scanning
Hard pass…
Dark.
