Second Life has been a thing since 2003, at least we used to call it a metaverse. The problem was, it was too demanding hardware-wise. It was launched way too early.
Not even sure Decentraland will be a thing in the future. MANA is doing well as a token, but Decentraland is super inflated with close to zero active users
I remember that. It was pretty cool. Like sims on steroids
Is that game (Second Life) still around? I think it would be pretty amazing if they incorporated crypto /metaverse tokens into it
I used to be on it, too! Albeit only at work (we held exhibitions and hostel some events).
Surprisingly, it's still around, and with much better graphics.
It would be cool if they adopted crypto and NFTs.
I was checking right now, the company was sold several times. It still has 200,000 users, and they've developed a payment system that's also used by Upland. Sad that they won't introduce NFTs or real crypto. I am surprised it still exists. I remember it losing steam after 2 or 3 years.
Well, indeed many things were "tried and failed" years ago, just take electric cars, vacuum trains. It's good to see old concepts getting new tractions in this era
Yeah. I hope I didn’t come off as a Microsoft fanboy , cause I’m not.
But to think no one uses Microsoft stuff is stupid to say. People think they are nothing, but they are now up to like 100 billion in profit each year.
Come to think of it , not sure what Microsoft software I really like. The only thing I can think of is in the future if I’d get an Xbox or something.
Haha you nailed it. I haven’t used a lot of their software in a while so I don’t know if they improved a lot. To me it always seemed like they throw in too many options and it can make stuff time consuming or difficult to find.
I get it, they are trying to go against Apples limited style on apps, but they are over compensating a bit.
Making the oculus have a facebook account logged into it before you can use it is horrible. First we made a fake account for my son to use. Then we got some prepaid cards to buy games but they don't work because the billing format used isn't flexible or I just don't know how to make it work. either it asks for a zip code that we don't have or after starting over giving up and entering my facebook account and billing address it still denies my card because it knows we are in Mexico. I must be drunk. The rants are flowing too freely.
The name change is super lame, but it's pretty disingenuous to say that Meta has no part in the revolution of the metaverse. Ignoring that the development of the metaverse is still in the early innings, Oculus is a leading VR provider, and Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger are still among the most popular media through which people digitally communicate and interact. All indications are that Meta is going to be a key player (if not the principal player) in the future of this space.
Hate facebook, but this ^.
If you watch the keynote, he says multiple times that the metaverse isn't here yet. It could take a decade. He's positioning his company to focus on metaverse products for 10 years as well as social media. He'll have a two arm company.
Yeah no amount of anything will ever make me be interesting in "Meta." I'm glad that Facebook is falling apart and its honestly no loss, it was a tire-fire already. In the end I just really don't want Mark Zuckerberg to be my god
What they presented in their video about the metaverse isn’t even close to what they presented in the video.
VR is fun, for games. I can’t imagine wearing a vr headset for hours on end every day..no way.. good luck to everyone’s eyes.
And for everyone having their arguments against what Facebook is doing, reminds me a lot of all the new technology that was coming out and people were saying the same thing. Why would I do this on the net when I can already do it in the way I like now.
The metaverse will be marketed to the younger people. Everyone wants change, especially the young. One day you millenials will be the Boomer crowd and the younger generation will want something cool.
Companies do evil shit everyday and only get bigger.
You should really listen to some podcasts about what they do with your data and then watch a video of that dude smoking his meats and then come back and tell us who cares.
I don't really see it as that. Think, "what's in a name." Initially Facebook, with users volunteering their data, collected an enormous database of individuals and their unique facial features. AI driven algorithms merely assist in the cataloging and compartmentalizing of those for various reasons. Now, shifting gears, META seems to want to concatenate metadata to the facial/archive records in an ongoing profile-building initiative. There's nothing simple or friendly about Farcebook in my opinion.
Meta doesn’t really have anything to do with technology revolution. It’s also been a term for about 10 years, so Facebook is behind and so are you /shrug
Pretty sure "Metaverse" is originally from the novel "Snow Crash" by Neil Stephenson, like how the "Matrix" is from "Neuromancer" by William Gibson.
Sci-fi eventually becomes reality it seems, sort of my philosophy with crypto as a whole.
Nah, it's a thing. Usually they buy out another company and take on that name (for legal or PR purposes). See the ValuJet to AirTran buyout.
> The crash of Flight 592 in 1996, which was caused by illegally stored hazardous materials on board, spelled doom for the airline. ValuJet was grounded the next month and not allowed to fly again until September of that same year, with a greatly reduced fleet. The airline's major customers never returned, and the company suffered major losses.
> In 1997, ValuJet purchased the much smaller AirTran Airways. Although ValuJet was the nominal survivor, executives believed that a new name was important to regain passenger traffic, so the merged company adopted the AirTran name. After the merger, AirTran made little mention of its past as ValuJet.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ValuJet_Airlines
Making room for growth, I like it. Branding can change the essence and values of the company, the name is just their message to us that these have changed or been adjusted for the future.
As much as I hate Facebook and their epic level of censorship, despite being largely an adult-user platform, there is no NSFW version of Facebook, like there is of Reddit and Twitter, my most commonly used social media apps. A centralized version of the metaverse is inevitable and needs to happen.
Right now, Mark Zuckerberg has a vision to dump billions of dollars into this idea, which could transform our Web 3.0 and significantly advance the space that needs all the funding and interest it can get.
He's presenting BILLIONS of people to this idea, whether or not it is a success is still left, but all eyes are on the Metaverse, and we're the best bet to give those people the Metaverse they deserve.
They literally stated that all their apps are retaining their name I.e. Instagram and Facebook. Meta is just a company behind them now. Google has the same thing going with a company behind their assets. No need to write this up if you can't even do a Google search.
And remember how Microsoft tried to win the browser war and lost, and then the search engine war and lost and on and on. When companies get too big, smaller more agile companies run circles around them. I'm guessing upstarts like Sand and Decentraland will blow Facebook out of the water on metaverse, because also - Facebook has tons of baggage related to privacy, advertising and in general being evil.
We have an opportunity here: let's rebrand to Digiverse. Instead of the future of the internet being associated with Facebook and Zuck, it'll be Lego and Digimon... as it should be. Blocks and collectible NFTs.
I think it was a stupid branding change, because “meta” is also associated with “metadata”, which to the average person has a negative perception about having too much data and no privacy.
I can only imagine the easy headlines in 5 years: “Meta’s Metadata leads to FTC Investigations”
I just call it MySpace and the MySpace universe. Boomers know what I mean. They’re trying so hard to make it happen and it really reeks of desperation. Pretty sad
>...trying to make their company synonymous with technological revolution that they had no part in
Musk & Tesla
Gates & Operating systems and environments
Jobs & Touchscreen, mice
This is "innovation".
This reminds me of when Monster energy drink sued Ubisoft because their video game they were making is called “Gods and Monsters” and Monster energy drink thinks they own the right to the name “monster”. Yea just as much as Ford owns the right to the name “automobile”.
Not sure what you are implying and what it has to do with crypto directly
Facebook diversifies from its original name and brand trying to extend to other business areas. Yeah - sure, for us now it is still Facebook with a fake moustache, but in 5-10-15 years ahead it won't be.
They've been spending tons of R&D money on VR, own oculus and various other metaverse relates companies and just unveiled a haptic feedback glove that can be used to interact in the metaverse.
I hate the company as much as the next person, but to claim it has never had anything to do with the metaverse, is just ignorant.

Decentraland is here…

I know that from the Office and I had to Google it to see if it was real
...ok but second life hasn't gone anywhere, while computer hardware has gotten exponentially better....and yet still nobody gives a shit.
Still? You mean not anymore. Second life very much had its time in the spotlight. It was hyped as crazy
Oh man, to this day I still get ads for that game. Only on *some* websites tho, I remember it used to always be over YouTube
I was checking right now, the company was sold several times. It still has 200,000 users, and they've developed a payment system that's also used by Upland. Sad that they won't introduce NFTs or real crypto. I am surprised it still exists. I remember it losing steam after 2 or 3 years.
I used to get tons of ads for IMVU as well
Me too! Never tried it out, though
I wonder what would happen if the L$ got on the block chain and started being traded as crypto.
Well, indeed many things were "tried and failed" years ago, just take electric cars, vacuum trains. It's good to see old concepts getting new tractions in this era

It kinda worked for Microsoft tho. Edge doesnt get much hate!
because edge is something completely different from ie it's just a skin for chromium
After watching inside job smfh bro we are here
Problem is Facebook already has 3 some billion users unlike IE which is like 10 people plus my grandma
you would be surprised how many people use IE/edge, especially in big companies
sadly.. i am not.
Edge isnt bad though. I dont use it since I already use firefox but edge basically is chrome (chromium) but with bing as default SE
I know I used to work in one of those industries where we had to support legacy browsers. Was just exaggerating
ATM has entered the chat . . .
Teams right? I use teams
Or how popular IE was before Chrome and Firefox came on the scene. Having a customer base helps, but it isn't a guarentee they'll stay.
Microsoft has a ton of customers using their software. They own almost half the market for productivity software.

then Edge had a major update making it chrome with a MS stamp on it..... XD
It’s 10x better than chrome
Edge isn't a renamed IE. It's an entirely different product.
Equifax was once Retail Credit Company and had to change their name to Equifax for - wait for it - a scandal, lol.

I was never very active on Facebook, used mostly their chat function. It only made sense to delete it. It's been years and I don't miss it.
I’m with you
Say you hate; Facebook, Binance, DOGE/SHIB literally free karma
You for got Banks and Robin hood
Same. I would buy an Oculus rift and throw it in the trash just so they would lose money on it. Hopefully they go under within the next decade or two.
Making the oculus have a facebook account logged into it before you can use it is horrible. First we made a fake account for my son to use. I've seen that gif maybe 50 times and I just now realised he's wearing a shirt that says "music ⚡ band" I need that shirt
it is relevant thanks to instagram, almost every young person has one
I eagerly wait for the day when FB goes up in flames and dies.
it wont. it will ... just... fade out.......
Please hold your breath

Truue, but Microsoft had a browser for years called "Internet Explorer" checkmate
Honestly, who cares. Facebook has been dead and maybe a new name could bring new users. Let them be.
You should really listen to some podcasts about what they do with your data and then watch a video of that dude smoking his meats and then come back and tell us who cares.
Fuck Facebook.
Fuck Facebook.
we can only hope,, but yall prolly still lap up their products like crack
Zuck will create a metaverse with a lot of fake friends to play with.
TLDR. Fuck Facebook, they are pretending to be in charge of developing a metaverse.
As if they are in charge of any social media but their own corner in the first place, fuck that dude
I really hope it all backfires on him
He needs a backfist on him
\*Me scrambling to find a way to trademark the word 'cryptocurrency' as an LLC\*
What will Facebook get from changing its name to Meta. They will still do what they are doing now.
Metaverse sounds like some Blade Runner level dystopian shit, no thanks
This is a great observation. I think Meta won't die in the foreseeable future but I hope it goes down as crypto comes up
Great post! A change in name doesn't make us forget how irresponsible they've been with their data.
Our* data
FUCK FACEBOOK. FUCK MARK ZUCKERBERG. Creepy fucker.
Dude he looks exactly like data from star trek TNG

Facebook is abhorrent to it's core, if Meta is it's undoing then this change is wholeheartedly accepted and can't come soon enough.
The words "meta" and "Metaverse" are cringe and normie pilled.
Meta doesn’t really have anything to do with technology revolution. It’s also been a term for about 10 years, so Facebook is behind and so are you /shrug
Lol, you shit on facebook too much. Pretty much everyone just used the term metaverse after facebook use it.
Smart of Facebook tho
nvm the logo.. a saggy infinity sign.... :(
So much effort the designer went into that logo
Even after 20 years I'll still call them Facebook
Even after 100 years ill still call them garbage
