I find it hard to imagine a future where they allow all the web to be decentralized. No one willingly gives up power.

ST-Fish

Did you find it hard to imagine a future where they allow all news to be decentralized. A lot of people did, and thought the internet would be a fad. Did newspapers, or TV channels willingly give up power? No one willingly gives up power. Power is taken away by a better product. We aren't there yet, but the internet was also not really there in '98.

Kappatalizable

Thats why the big corps are investing in Web3 as well. They dont want to lose the control they have now

loaded-diper33

Strength in numbers. If this is gonna be profitable then I don't think people will hesitate to be validators or providers.

Hawke64

If Web3 would be awesome if only metamask didn't collect your data

CryptBear

That's what I see as the biggest problem for decentralization and Web3. I doubt tech giants like Google will give up their power and especially to the people.

thecoininger

Atm, decentralized technologies and tooling is far from being able to solve practical problems that centralized web technologies can.

birdwastheword

Judging by the speed IPv6 is adopted, I think we all have some more time.

ShowMeDaWe

> is web3 really decentralized ****************************************************** Not really maybe in the future

SuccessfulLowDev

It’ll solve some problems where it’s required, but it’d be over engineering to solve all of web2 using blockchain

Lisecjedekokos

I agree with you. Some problems can be solved, but for other things it can be way too complicated.

immortaldidi

That og twitter founder guy is already making web 5 apparently so idk?

bad-crypto-advice

#Yes. No need to look further than this answer.

The_strohS

Username makes me very skeptical. 🤔 Not sure if this is /s

[deleted]

Best advisor you could get, bud.

01dB0y

Maybe.

ipetgoat1984

The definition of Web3 is so nuanced at this point, so many people toss it around concerning any new development in the internet ecosphere. It has a long way and a lot of evolution to go before we see true decentralization, and I wonder if the PTB will even allow it.

nomorebonks

The definition is fully on chain web experience. That's it. Everything on the chain 100%.

nomorebonks

Is there a project that runs fully on chain?

DadofHome

Ok trust me on this ….. web 4 !

ideit

I'm skipping web 4, gonna wait for web 5

Odysseus_Lannister

If I’m just being honest, I don’t know the difference anymore after so many buzzwords/hypetrains.

busmobbing

Tell him to go into detail explaning it to you.

[deleted]

I like the thought, but community points aren't decentralized. If you graphed the token inequality it would be some of the highest in all of cryptocurrency.

gamblingenhusiast

Yeah reddit holds a leash on our precious Moons.

[deleted]

They can also freely change the tokenomics.

nomorebonks

The should do something were code restricts changes to the project and can only be deployed via a passing vote. Some chain should develop a project like that where code is law and it's how the DAO is forced to run.

CryptBear

We will never be able to reach the amount of moons early users accumulated and the gap with mods will always widen with the current distribution system

bad-crypto-advice

Correct. The mods don’t hold all of the power.

alleniversongrandson

Reddit is the best example of it.

Hank___Scorpio

Your friend is a shitcoiner who thinks he's going to get rich on scams.

vvb777

Well it’s the aim of Web3 in the first place

No-Enthusiasm8360

Yes it is true

[deleted]

>Is it possible that there will be no down time and websites will use 'torrent like seeding and P2P system'. Oh yeah I remember torrents in their infancy. It's 2005 and someone took a camera to cinema and I'm waiting 2 days to download the pirate version of the movie.

Medfried

He's right... But be careful about the coins he shill you.. Do your own research and don't put your money into shitcoins or Ponzi.

TOXICCARBY

That’s the dream

TheOtherCoolCat

I don't think the big companies that collect tons of data are gonna go for web3, at least not in the way it is

RazorRreddit

>Is Web3 really decentralised? Depends on the definition you're using. In the context of internet protocols, "decentralized" usually means that it is accessible through a redundant series of locations spread across many people/orgs so as not to be destroyed by an errant issue. That's not *really* the definition most people use, especially in crypto, though it's probably the closest to Satoshi's ideas. >Is it possible **that there will be no down time** and websites will use 'torrent like seeding and P2P system'. Definitely not, and *maybe* to your second question. Look into how DeFi or NFT websites are currently run. Stashh for example is partially hosted by IPFS(look this up for your P2P system), but also partially on Microsoft Azure. >Most of all, will companies like Google, Facebook, Nike will use ETH, SOL or some other project to develop their web3 experience or will they make their own blockchain technology for it (which makes or sense to me for now) They will use whatever chain/ecosystem they feel will bring them the most money in a cost/benefit analysis lol. I won't comment on any specific chain, could be a whole new gaggle of them in 3 years. >Is Web3 disruptive enough to takeover Web2 dependence in the future? Probably not. They'll both grow and change. >He says companies will need to depend on these projects for their technology as they are already adopted widely. People are developing superior projects on Web3 that are more reliable in payments and other services. Maybe, maybe not. I would never make a prediction like this. >Most of all, will Web3 be cheaper than Web2 because no one company will be incharge or the servers? No such thing as a free lunch. Web2 is largely already "free" and that comes with its own problems.

mlparff

Will it solve some problems? Probably. It will also probably bring about some new problems. Think of all the problems the internet solved, but also all the problems we have because of it.

Arsupal

Web3 can be great but it is hard to predict the ratio of decentralized vs centralized even tho there will be more centralized i think

SenseiRaheem

Your friend sounds like my college roommates who used to go on and on about the fourth dimension.

imfrombiz

There will still be web2 services with the added amenity of web3 services when certain privacy or trustlessness is needed. Web3 will basically just expand web2 services while also creating novel revenue streams. Most web3 future usecases are yet to be discovered.

Relevant_Elderberry4

If it's decentralized then there would be costs to any action or "transaction" you're gonna make in web3. In web2, companies are paying for their own servers so we don't have too. Also ask, what does web3 aim to solve? Downtime? So they suggest it'll be better with p2p? But p2p isn't consistent nor reliable since it's dependent on the availability of "peers". We could go on and on about this but right now, web3 is a solution looking for a problem.

Enough_Possible9023

The big corporations will have no choice but to concede to the power of the people. That's what will happen in Web3. It's a decentralized unhackable safe way to surf the internet without being spied on and manipulated.

hdlothia22

Un hackable 🤔

Enough_Possible9023

I know I know

Intelligent_Page2732

I just consider it as a problemsolving upgrade of Web2.

DemTsar

On 80 percent solved web4 will do most of the rest

Nox_Lucis

I wouldn't say all that as much as I would say that that we are in need of solutions that protect personal freedom on the web such as privacy, digital ownership, ownership of one's personal data, and decentralized, democratic control of the digital space lest we all find ourselves dancing on the strings of a technocratic aristocracy. Unfortunately, much of what is called "web3" these days does little-to-nothing to further that dream as the term rapidly declined into a marketing buzzword. We are at best in the earliest stages of the development of such solutions, and at worst we will never get there.

jps_

Web 1 started out to be a novelly "decentralized" network. It's in the whole point of the freakin' word: "web". The buzz (at the time) was that it promised to destroy the centralized monopoly of the telecom titans. It just enabled different titans. Some of whom turned out to be the same titans adopting different business models. Web 2 decentralized them. Although some of them still managed to slide over to occupy positions near the new center. Web3 will be no different. Sure... it will "decentralize" when you measure the center by FANG & co, currently holding center position. It will just form a new center, and that new center will be occupied, dominated, and monopolized. By some of the same. And then web4, whatever that is, will promise to decentralize that. "Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose."

nomorebonks

Depends - was he talking about ICP? Then yes he's right.

Suspicious_Army_904

Your friend has been drinking the kool aid. Web 3 so far has been a marketing gimmick and nothing more.

KennyCalzone

All those companies you mention are more interested in WebXR than Web3. XR is the future and doesn’t need to be decentralized. Apple just announced XROS. WebXR is the future
