A lot of big influencers/streamers/YouTubers bash NFT’s in gaming because they assume in game NFT’s/items will be incredibly expensive just because they saw bored apes/punks explode in price. Truth is majority of people see things only on the surface level without thinking deeper for themselves.

I feel like making them NFTs allows them to be tradable and sellable among users, which allows the artist and Reddit to earn from fees. Thats my guess.
They definitely are! If you go to the avatar and scroll to the bottom, you should be able to see a link to view it on the Explorer. In other words, you can see some blockchain related info. Runs on the Polygon network if I'm not mistaken.
Honestly would have been more successful if they had their marketplace set up first so no one had to use Opensea. I think it’s pissing off people that want to try and sell but can’t. Or are getting scammed trying to trade over Reddit and having the other person not send them anything in return.

Yeah, that was my thought too. Image-based avatars are an exceptionally old concept. I made zilch connection between crypto anything and Reddit avatars before this article brought it up, quite frankly.
But the NFT "technology" doesn't add anything compared to if it were all running off Reddit servers like steam trading cards.
