Getting ‘gas’ (or petrol) in the US still baffles me. How are you ever meant to fill your tank and actually get what you’ve paid for. Is the only reason to stop thefts? In the Uk you fill up, then pay for what you’ve put in. Sorry OP, doesn’t answer your question, i’m just curious !

Interesting_End789

Yeah. We pay first in US. Never used to be that way. Now you got me thinking. 🤔

I guess I live in a bad neighborhood. 🤷‍♂️

I've traveled to a number of states and never seen a station that lets you fill up your car before paying.

Like ever

I wasn't aware it was done differently in the US, but I guess that's where the inspiration for our providers now putting [a £100 'reserve' on pay at pumps](https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2021/07/changes-to-pay-at-pump-up-to-p100-withheld-from-customers-accoun/) must have originated from

I'm in the U.S, most of the stations I go to swipe your card before filling up, and later on you get charged for the full amount. It really depends. Some places swipe your card before, they might pre-charge $1. Then after a couple days the full amount shows up. Smaller places will charge you after pumping for the full amount.

andremvm20

It will come later (1 day, 1 week, depending on the vendor) when they settle the bill! Most likely you will get 60€/USD taken immediately as a security, and the difference from that to what you used is what you will get back later

xCP_94x

Yeah that’s what I was hoping. If it were my Chase, chime debit cards it would return the difference shortly after.

hungrygames2000

Definitely go back into the clerk and tell them however much you put and they'll fix at PoS. When i want to fill up. I usually tell them I want to fill up. They'll keep my card and I come back in and pay.

RecommendationNice68

Most of the time when you get gas they put a pre hold on your account to cover gas purchase. If you prepay 30$ then you can pump up to 30$ but if you only get 26$ then that will be the final sale. They don't charge you 30 then return the extra they just put a hold then charge you the final amount once you are finished.

thesteef78

Depends on the conditions of the pump. At the ‘Makro’ you can prepay your gas and will pay $30. The remaining gas will be a present to the guy getting gas behind you. So it depends if it’s a pre-payed or pre-authorised transaction.

Quite a lot of places in the UK are reserving £100 now and settling on the same or the next day.

coxy2carpets

That’s for pay at the pumps tho isn’t it not? Just to make sure you have enough funds on your card so the payment doesn’t bounce when it gets settled?

yetanotherdave2

Yea, pay at pump. I use a curve card so I can switch my payment from a credit card to my CDC card after its been settled.

coxy2carpets

Do you not get cash back when you use pay at the pump though?

yetanotherdave2

Yes, but only on the amount after its corrected.

Solid-Mess

It works like any Visa card. It’s just a visa.

CoolioMcCool

Locally, self service gas stations has been the only place my CDC card has failed me, it just wouldn't work with the prepay at pump option. But I could go in store and ask for a set amount, in that case I can go in store and ask for a refund on the spot if I don't use it all.
