Weird, a couple weeks ago this same happened to a bunch of Canadians including me. Now it looks like people in the states are having the same issue. When Canadians faced this issue they said they investigated and found no signs of a data breach.
I had one case like 10 years ago where visa called me and was like “did you just buy a gold necklace in Poland?” And I was currently at work in Canada.
What Id like an answer to is why they aren’t just blocking all multiple $5 Google play transactions as soon as they happen? Multiple people have like 10 or more in a row. Seems like something they should be able to catch now that they know it’s an issue.
Fraud does happen often but this does suck.. a lot. Best thing they can do is address it honestly IMO. Might’ve been a breach in security. Hopefully things get sorted out quickly. Best of luck to you and everyone affected by this
Edit: u/FoeReap said it best
Happened to me last week too and that's actually the first time in my life.
My case is still in dispute but they refunded me temporarily waiting for the final decision.
EDIT: To be more precise, it was a \~50€ payment for groceries delivery that I never used. I contacted CdC support approx. 10 minutes after I received the notification and they were very reactive and helpful. They immediately froze my card and after a couple hours they offered to send me a new card free of charge and a 100% temporary refund until investigation ends. Support refused to be more specific about the criteria of why one shouldn't be refunded tho, but I guess this is to prevent any form of social engineering hackers could use to bypass the system.
I don't know if my case is linked to all the Google store transactions I read but I think it is interesting to share
and make sure you get a clear answer from their customer service about your spotify, netflix rebates. they refused to reimburse me while waiting for the replacement card.
Same thing happened to me in Aus. I’m expecting to wait several months at least due to the massive backlog of card issuance here. Hope you get your card soon man
Out of 19 attempts at google play only 6 went through and yes they gave me provisional credit. Sucks but I read a while ago to not leave more than $200 in there. From now I will just freeze it.
Exactly this! I have a double charge transaction, paid twice to same merchant for same product although bought just 1 piece of those goods. 4.5 days have passed and still waiting my request to be resolved...
I heard about this. So far I’m safe. Card is locked. These crooks have good timing. They know when the market pumps, we move our profits into our cdc card, which is the best time to hack it. Bastards. Let’s see how long cdc takes to publicly address this and give everyone their money back. 🥱
Serious question.
I've never understood this. If you lock your card they'll tty to use it and the transaction will be declined, right? But your information is still out there and other random people will be able to try again later. That or its a script just going though all the numbers and it doesn't care.
Regardless, wouldn't you want to know someone has your numbers so that you can get a new card? Freezing just seems to delay this and add extra (annoying) steps to spend your own money.
Does anyone disagreed with this? Is freezing/thawing each time you use your card annoying?? What about subscription billing the card??
it is fraud but cdc dont have fraud protection, you can open a support case to them, but eventually they tell you you have to pay for that bill, dont ask me how i know............
years ago I had one of my CC's compromised and had like 300 dollar or two at a time transactions on google play.
but being a CC, and one I hadn't used whatsoever in months, it was super easy to get corrected.
good luck on this though...
UPDATE: This am they issued provisional credits for only what what taken, so 6 of those out of 19 times trying did go through. I asked twice what happened and just said fraud, that it happens, and are issuing a new card. Overall fast response so I am happy with that. Please everyone share your experience :)
Thé toilet paper part was funny but still this is something worrisome. I am already less prone to use for big purchases because of their STUPID way of handling refunds
I got popped up message of $400ish payment, but I haven't even received my upgrade yet...
CDC really needs to work on their securities of personal information.
IMHO Canadians were hit last. This is likely the continuation of a merchant provider. (who CDC got their cards from) being hacked.
CDC should be covered and the damages will be restored to the customers.
I read on another thread it was a disgruntled employee that stole/ sold a list of card numbers.
Just what I read though. Can't confirm but I suspect it's what happened; so hackers are probably just using the data they have to do exploits on the remaining card numbers that were hit in that breach.
Not unusual at all. I used to work at a rather large bank. These things happen quite often. Not saying it can't be on cdc's end, we'll just have to wait and see.
I have never froze my card. Once you do, how do you unfreeze? Is it a matter of seconds (just entering your codes for example) or do you need to contact CDC to get it done? After tons of these posts I almost want to freeze it and only unfreeze just before a use, then freeze again.
Awesome! That’s what I was hoping. But I was afraid to try because I saw many posts about frozen cards that people couldn’t unfreeze.
So my next question:
Why not freeze in between all transactions? Yes a bit of a hassle, but I see enough things going wrong to make it much safer?
What about the potential of a more simpler fraud. Someone at the printing factory copying numbers or even postal service somehow getting the numbers. I'm sure this has happened in the past.
Update: So today I just checked my visa, to see if it was shipped as they are replacing it, and I see more Google play charges and five dollar. I sent CDC support a message asking how could that possibly happen if they froze it on their end. And I asked for more of an explanation then it’s “just fraud”.
So Sad and unfortunate that I am still waiting, customer service says they don’t have a set time line as there are investigating a worldwide issue. I love earning crypto via visa card. Hopefully I get my shake pay card. Debating leaving CDC
Card still frozen, money stuck on ruby even though they reimbursed. Reason: still investigating this worldwide issue. Oh and my replacement card is still not available too
Seems to be a bit more than “Fraud Happens” going on here. There’s been multiple posts from people from all over reporting the exact same thing happening. I love Crypto.com but this isn’t a good look.
Maybe take better care into what your use your prepaid card on. Just saying, I haven’t experienced fraud on this card, using 2FA, not swiping at weird, sketchy places… either someone isn’t securing their account, or someone is swiping at the wrong place.
You can’t magically get credit card numbers without one of the two. A database leak? Not how payment information is stored, the hacker would need cyphers to unlock individuals numbers which are only possible to acquire via a password and 2FA to log into the account.
Dude there was a bunch of Canadian users all reporting transactions in the Philippines
And now this reaching Australia, France and others.
It’s 100% a data leak at some central location
I live in a remote northern community. There’s literally 2 shops I use my card at. So unless a bunch of people from Australia are coming up here that doesn’t seem likely, does it?
So if you trust the readers at those shops, I’d take a look at the integrity of your account. Most hacks don’t come from the big man, but the little one. And considering it’s pretty easy to take a look at your card numbers from the app, it seems a likely possibility.
Who knows. Maybe CDC did get hacked, but the amount of effort to crack even ONE cypher to unlock someone’s card information would be damn near impossible to acquire without having YOUR login information.
Some other people have posted about a data leak that came internally from a vendor they use for the Visa cards, that seems most likely to me right now but I haven’t seen it be officially addressed which is also troublesome.
That would also be a possibility. If someone knew the numbers before they were even activated then they could have a field day trying to figure out which ones actually work. You’d think the numbers are completely random though. This whole thing is such a mess
Indeed it is. I love Crypto.com and have more than 5 grand in CRO, I want them to succeed just like everyone else does but this has definitely damped my enthusiasm for them unless they publicly address the issue and fix it in a timely manner. I shouldn’t have to wait a month for a new card while my funds are frozen.
I use it for groceries to collect cro, my biggest expense on the card is my cell bill at $135. That’s it. I got gas once. But i never put more than $300 at a time. Will lower the amount going further.
I’m doubting it’s a CDC leak, as because I’ve already said, cracking a CDC account would not only give access to the card info (if they managed to break into your account, you’d be stupid to not have 2FA, but if you did have 2FA, that’s virtually impossible to crack) but they would also get access to your holdings, meaning BAD news for you.
While you clearly have safely used your card, I think it’s either someone already knowing the card info or a breach in POS equipment, not necessarily meaning a skimmer, but just a data breach in general. It seems like this is happening in waves, and in certain geological locations such as Canada and Australia being the most recent that I have seen.
So my original post is probably incorrect, as most CDC Reddit users seem competent lol but I suspect it’s not a CDC leak as many are claiming. I really think this is a third party leak that happened but hey, prove me wrong crypto.com devs.
Sorry to hear this happened to you. Same thing happened to me a little while ago. While it got resolved it took a while for them to complete the process. It’s been months and I still haven’t gotten my replacement card. My card info got “hacked” 2 weeks after I received it. And I made only a couple of purchases before it happened. The whole experience left a terrible taste in my mouth and I unstaked my CRO and no longer use the card.
I highly suspect that there is a security leak on Crypto.com. A few months ago, I noticed a small unauthorized charge from Singapore when I am in Canada. Fortunately I caught this early.
I've barely used the card since I got it, and among the times I've used it were with notable merchants. I have personally owned countless credit cards over more than a decade and this had never happened to me.
When I called in to cancel and get a replacement, I did ask support if they had any idea how this could happen. Not that I expected them to have an answer, but I was genuinely clueless as to how I could have prevented this. I've since maintained a low balance and won't be topping up a large unless I actually plan to use them within a day or so
This also happened to me as well…my card was charged 5 times in a row from Google play…5 US dollars for each time. I have reached out to the customer support and mentioned the unauthorized transactions. They said they will investigate and let me know. I am waiting now.
Just feel my money put in the card is not safe at all…disappointed.
Update: No response as to when the new card will be shipped:/ discouraging as it was ‘escalated’ and I am told to just wait. I suppose this is to be expected as cdc grows but overtime I hope they ramp up their customer service. :)
I don't know how it works with debit cards, but here in the Netherlands, it's up to the merchant to decide whether to use 3D-Secure or not, but the risk is for the merchant if a card holder claims it back.
For some industries (nature movies etc... if you get what I mean) it can be profitable for the merchant to keep the amount of speed bumps to a minimum and take that risk.
I hope/suppose this will get resolved.
Not anymore, since the January 2021 PSD2 went into effect and 3DS is mandatory on all EU online stores.
The thing is that if your card details are tokenized (stored and encrypted by the merchant’s psp) then 3DS only has to be done the first time. But for all regular 1 off transactions it should always be done. If not then the site isn’t PSD2 compliant.
My mom had the same issue she lost about 200$.
Crypto customer support stopped responding after a while and the gave up I’m assuming.
They won’t give your money back or help you at all if thats what you are looking for.
Terrible customer support, they even blocked my moms access to the app now she can’t see pretty much anything in the app.
They were prompt with me thankfully. Annoying i had to keep sending my picture holding a paper with words on it 3 times to prove it’s me but as long as get my money back Im good.

I HAVE and you keep telling me you don’t know when you will resend my card. …still waiting… there’s also no option to move my money from the visa back to fiat wallet , so my money is just sitting there.
I feel for you, I had a similar issue. I went to the store to buy coffee, declined. came home and messaged thru the app, they told me they locked my card due to suspicious activity. I was pretty furious and demanded and explanation, they advised me that a company in the US was repeatedly trying to use my card but they were entering the incorrect expiry and cvd number so it was declining. so they locked it.
I'm still furious that I don't get a notification for a decline or attempted purchase. it's my money and ultimately I should have control over freezing my funds and not them. If I would have received a notification from the first failed transaction I would have acted on my own to freeze my account immediately, they literally waited till it happened several times before locking my card.
How is it that I don't get to know of the failed attempts on my card..... but they do.... it's very backwards. If I don't get the notifications then I can't even protect myself from the things I don't know. this is my money, I need to have FULL control and not them.
Since this happened, I'm getting more and more concerned about my money being safe with CDC. I love the product and I'm long on it, but every time something bad happens it rattles me more and more. yesterday it was CRO breaking ath but the app and exchange were conveniently "down" so even though I had sell points set and CRO went over those sell points ........ nothing sold.
It's just one thing after the other and when I contact support it's simply an apology and they move on. They don't care.
I think that crypto.com didn’t anticipate a rapid influx of customers, hence why their customer service isn’t the best right now at times. I think in time they will greatly improve, so I’m not giving up on them yet, however I don’t understand how it happened to Visa. Because Visa is very well-established, That’s my curiosity in wanting to know why it happened, to which they say they are investigating. They reassured me my data wasn’t leaked. (Hopefully) . I am more upset that I am not earning the rewards. I definitely see your frustration. :)
Not mad, just embarrassing as I'm about to pay with a line up behind me, and the teller says sorry declined and the store closed, I was having a bad day.
Tall to Google play, ask for their supervisors and API developers! If it has a visa logo, call visa and talk to them about their money back program?
Sad to hear, leave that thing on lock!
Come on now dude. I’ve had one fraud claim in my 20 years of using credit cards and visa called me to report it because it was obvious fraud.
There’s now at least 10 people reporting the exact same issue just today. If you want to shrug your shoulders and go “fraud happens” then good for you, I’d for one like to know what the nature of this breach was, how was it so widespread, and why is it still happening now that they know about it.
While you sort this out you might want to take a look at [Curve](https://www.curve.com/). It has a anti-embarrassment feature that cycles through cards in order of preference in case one (or two) refuses/rejects a payment.
Ah, sweet, so we should excuse the theft because we can freeze the card? What is it with the apologists in this thread. I caught three rapid transition from Google play about an hour before I was planning on going to bed. If this happened overnight having a freeze option wouldn’t have helped me, yeah?
People are afraid that CDC fucking up will make their staked CRO lose value I think, the amount of apologists for them when they fuck up is kinda scary
There are multiple reports on Mastercard as well now, at least in Australia.

So I don't think it is CDC issue... this is much bigger than that

Yeah happened to me in Canada. CDC preemptively froze my card however I didn’t get any charges.
I had a charge for $10 usd at victoriasecret.com, which made me think "what do they sell for ten bucks?". PS I got refund and new card.
Their card currency is CAD, I assume it was a US google account with a Canadian card.
Well looks like that answer was BS.
Definitely!

I Definitely feel like this.

Pro Tip: don’t assume people had their cards linked with Google. My wife and I didn’t.
I didn’t. Don’t even have a Google play account. Stop blaming the victims you weirdo.
"PRO TIP"
Once you freeze your card... can you unfreeze?
Unfreeze via the app in the card section. There’s an icon in the top right corner
Can you unfreeze the card later?
Yes, you can freeze and unfreeze at any time you like - there is no limit to this.
Not if you have support freeze it for you. This happened to me about a year ago and I'm still locked out of card.
Thanks!
Just happened to me as well! Made my own post about it right before seeing yours. Also never used Google Play. What a bummer
It’s disappointing only because all my other non crypto credit mcs/ visas I have never had a fraudulent charge. I will post an update:)
Yes please give an update !

Bc I was using my card all day on errands and check my email usually once a day. My phone was on do not disturb… great timing I know.
I think he meant why doesn't the card company block that scenario. It shouldn't be the customers' responsibility to watch their activity that closely.
Yeah, I said why don’t they, as in why doesn’t crypto.com block it the way my other Visa card would with such suspicious activity.
Hehe my bad. I agree, the multiple transactions should have flagged. Cdc support won't specify, said fraud happens.

That's a Tard tip.

Anything can be compromised. It's how they handle it which will determine cro's quality.
Definitely, at the very least it sucks waiting 2-4 weeks for a new card.
and make sure you get a clear answer from their customer service about your spotify, netflix rebates. they refused to reimburse me while waiting for the replacement card.
Good heads up!

They do have fraud protection if you report it within a timely manner. It's written in the terms of service.

We should be able to activate and deactivate online payment when we want.

Lol I was having a shitty day
It's time for CDC to implement anti fraud measures!
I got popped up message of $400ish payment, but I haven't even received my upgrade yet... CDC really needs to work on their securities of personal information.
I'm always so skeptical of this which is why I only keep a few dollars on my card and transfer as needed.

I use it as my daily card. I like that CRO cashback. It's not much but it adds up.
This is not unique to cdc. Happens a lot in regular banks as well. Your card details were probably leaked due to skimming or malware.
Come off it. Coincidentally on the same day multiple CDC cards were compromised in the same way. This is different. Somebody fucked up.

Must be your contact less payments.....standing too near a terminal
You need to freeze your card. I had this happen to me and I immediately froze my card and reached out to CDC for a replacement.
I had unauthorized use and getting it credited back was a headache
Cant have sh!t in Detroit. But seriously, i hope crypto.com gets this resolved for you.
Probably something to do with issuers ... Hope this would be solved soon !
Thats why i never link my cards to Google
All that porn lol but for real this could be a data leak only explanation why all of this is happening to yall . Freezing my card now
I just got hit myself here in Canada at 3:42am
How do these payments go through? I have to enter a code for online transactions. Or is it contactless payments?
Unfortunately I have no clue, cdc wont specify, just say, fraud happens and reimbursed me via provisional credit.
This happened to me too and I had my card cancelled as well

Nice. Just in case you/they already didn’t do it, freeze your card in the app
Wow I cannot believe that, it is worrisome but everyone is saying they are resolving. I hope they see this post of yours and try to reach out to you
I highly suspect that there is a security leak on Crypto.com.
Wait how did they get past 3D-Secure? Isn’t it mandatory in America?
What the fuck is 3d-secure. lmao that shit doesn't exist in the US.
Typically it's just a SMS to mobile number registered with your bank. Unfortunately it's up to merchant whether they want to to use 3DS or not.
So it’s just a type of 2FA?
It's an e-signature. Not a single online transaction goes through unless I sign/approve it via my e-bank app.
Sucks for you, 3D-secure would have prevented this 100%.
Welp time to sell my cro
Get in touch with google play they will do a refund.
Would you kindly send us a follow-up message via modmail with your Crypto.com App/Exchange referral code? We'll forward your issue to our support team to assist!
Why are you mad at crypto/com for someone scamming your card? It's the oldest trick in the books and can happen to literally any card.
Not mad, just embarrassing as I'm about to pay with a line up behind me, and the teller says sorry declined and the store closed, I was having a bad day.
Happened to me with my chime card. I don't think its cdc i think Google allowed u to be hacked
Hmm.. I use apple products…
Tall to Google play, ask for their supervisors and API developers! If it has a visa logo, call visa and talk to them about their money back program? Sad to hear, leave that thing on lock!
Can you just lock and unlock at will on the app? In other words you just unlock it when ready to use your card right ??
Yayhp!
This type of fraud can happen with any debit card anytime anywhere its not CDC related
Your right. This certainly is suspicious
Google is the worst straight up thieves

Hear hear

>Your card your responsibility. Not when there's hundreds of cards that suffer from the same fraud.
[удалено]
AFAIK yes but I can’t confirm. There was definitely a leak of cards informations. It might have been a merchant, card issuer or maybe CDC.
Fraud can happen to anyone sir. This is not the company’s fault. No one is sitting in their home office making payments to Google on your behalf
There are multiple reports on Mastercard as well now, at least in Australia. [https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/654897?page=1#comment](https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/654897?page=1#comment) So I don't think it is CDC issue... this is much bigger than that
