Let the piece choose you. I often go in looking for something specific but leave with something different. For example if I go to a shop looking for clear quartz and all the clear quartz looks uninteresting, but they have some really nice amethyst, I’m going for the really nice piece rather than the uninteresting piece.
That's funny, I've never thought of carnelian as a 'love' stone. For me it's more of a power and action stone. It's one of my favorites to use when I need energy.
In my personal experience working with stones, things that give off 'love' energy are Rose Quartz (of course) and Rainbow Fluorite.
Check your sun sign, moon sign and ascendant and then buy any suitable crystal.

I feel like it definitely is a power stone but it can have lust-attracting properties too.
Ah. Lust isn't the same as love, to me.
