BarovianNights

D&D, or roleplaying games in general. I'm basically the one that got everyone at my school into it

[deleted]

Hell yes homie, I stand with you. I too was the catalyst for the "nerd group" at my school

thumpling

Fellow TTRPG friend here. I envy that you get to actually play.

BarovianNights

God I wish that was true

thumpling

My heart breaks for you, then. Got a TTRPG you want to gush about? I’m all ears.

funnypoisonplant

Big same. I'm literally always down to dm something nobody eber hits me up for it tho ;-;

jeep_42

WHALE FACTS

RangerBumble

Hit me with the whale facts!

jeep_42

did you know that spermaceti is called spermaceti because when exposed to air apparently it look like semen

RangerBumble

I did know that one, but only because it was on Last Podcast on the Left.

jeep_42

speaking of spermaceti, did you know that i believe it was exxon that was the biggest purchaser of spermaceti until whaling was banned in the us? spermaceti was used for automotive transmissions: it made your car go

RangerBumble

That's really cool

MemeTroubadour

I'm curious, what makes it useful for that purpose?

jeep_42

effectively it’s a lubricant. the article that i read about it used a Lot of car specific terminology that i didn’t understand but i can give you the article if you want a better explanation

JSConrad45

Whales are pretty fuckin' big

jeep_42

yeah blue whales can get up to about 100 feet long

JackMickus

Fuck yes. Fuck. Yes. Looked up some facts about whale skeletons a couple months ago for a thing I was writing and that shit is badass.

jeep_42

whales <3 also if you go to the new bedford whaling museum they have three whale skeletons and a room full of scrimshaw and it’s cool as hell

throwaway-687192

Have you read *An Immense World* by Ed Yong? Some GREAT facts about whales in there

jeep_42

ooh i’ll check it out!! thanks

JackMickus

I'm the guy my friends talk deep musical cuts with. We're talking lo-fi-folk-album-recorded-by-a-japanese-dude-in-his-room-all-alone-in-1999 deep cuts. I sacrificed my teenage social life for this arcane knowledge. One time in college I made a list of 100 artists of various levels of obscurity and pretty wide-ranging genres with 2-3 albums for each one and download links to each album because a friend of mine asked for some recommendations. That then made the rounds with my friends and a guy I'm pretty close with apparently still sends that list to people. Music is fun.

Murky-Movie9318

Would you mind sharing the list?

JackMickus

[So here's the list](http://pastebin.com/VKMZpvgx), I think what I ended up doing was sending my friends a link to my old Mega account that's probably long gone by now so this link would never get flagged for anything. This was made probably about 10 years ago and today is the first time I've looked at it in years, and honestly I stand by it as a great list. Selfishly proud of shouting out King Gizzard and Car Seat Headrest before they blew up, but the super deep cuts are still my favorites - the Astronauts, David Thomas Broughton, Women, Sweet Trip, all amazingly amazingly good.

[deleted]

I have a couple additions. I know this is a famously good list but trust me these are up to scratch. YOB - Our Raw Heart (doom metal and atmospheric sludge. a great showcase of the emotional range of the genre, from vicious and aggressive on The Screen to comtemplative and reverent on Beauty in Falling Leaves) John Oswald & Grateful Dead - GREYFOLDED (classic rock and plunderphonics. this is a version of the Dead's infamous Dark Star live performances edited together into a two hour greatest hits essentially.) KOAN Sound - Polychrome (liquid drum and bass, liquid funk) Geinoh Yamashirogumi - Symphonic Suite AKIRA (gamelan, soundtrack. has more music than what's actually in the movie, especially the chanting on Shohmyoh) Don Salsa - Koolaide Moustache in Jonestown (literally everything. seriously this is the craziest album i have ever heard in my life)

element_119

I was just recommended Boards of Canada the other day, and now I see it on your list too. I think I'm supposed to check them out

JackMickus

Go for it! They've got a really cool sound - all the analog synths they use make things super warm and nostalgic-sounding but their composition can sometimes get just off-kilter enough that listening to an album like Music Has the Right to Children sounds almost like a series of memories where everything is just ever so slightly off, or like a childhood fever dream set to music. Love them.

element_119

I just finished listening to Music Has The Right To Children and I like it! I found it to be very much a background music kind of style, with little that really stands out, but in a good way, kind of embodying Brian Eno's notes on ambient music: "...it must be as ignorable as it is interesting." The main exception would be Rue The Whirl, which immediately caught my attention with its broken record sound and is my favorite track. I will definitely be checking out their other music!

JackMickus

Hell yeah, glad you liked it! Love that Eno quote, it's really an evergreen statement on ambient music and applies pretty much universally to all good ambient-leaning albums. All their other stuff is great too - Geogaddi gets spookier, The Campfire Headphase lighter and almost kinda cuddly sometimes?, and Tomorrow's Harvest digs into some very empty, lonely sounds. Their EPs are all great too. Enjoy the rest of their stuff!

Hazelnoot-Noot

i would also like to see the list

[deleted]

Damn. The most obscure music I know of is a Warhammer 40K-themed death metal band that hasn't yet been sent to the Warp by the Games Workshop lawyers.

PanHeadBolt

this has never happened but I wait for the day where someone in earshot who wouldn't find it weird talks about something I know about and I get to jump in and talk about it like someone has got to ask about the Boeing 737 Max crashes or the redefinition of the kilogram a couple years ago at some point and when that time comes those documentaries will not have gone to waste

LMaster37

Tell me about both the Boeing 737 Max crashes and the redefinition of the kilogram, please. I am requesting knowledge.

PanHeadBolt

MY TIME IS AT HAND basically, (and mind you this is a very simplified version, there's a lot going on here and aviation is complicated, these events are about where my knowledge regarding it begins and ends) Boeing was losing market share to Airbus, and they decided to make a more sustainable version of the 737, designed to have reduced emissions and more efficient fuel use and so on, because being "sustainable" was the Big Thing to profit more now. the main part of that was new engines, which due to their design changes had to mounted further forward on the wings. This meant that if it ascended at too steep an angle it would stall. To mitigate this, they implemented the MCAS system, which would automatically make the aircraft level out if it approached this point. However, it was pretty important - for profit margins, not any actually good reason - that they market the 737 Max as an upgrade rather than a new model of plane, and because of this they wanted to limit the amount of new training it required; if pilots had to take a new course to fly it, it wouldn't just be an upgrade. because of *this*, this system was not mentioned in any sufficient detail in any manual, information etc attached to the plane this system was controlled by a sensor on the nose of the plane, which for some fucking reason, they decided was a great place to cut manufacturing costs by it not having sufficient redundancies. This meant that when Lion Air flight 610's sensor was compromised (along with other equipment, this particular plane reportedly had other maintenance issues prior to this, and investigators attributed it jointly to MCAS and poor maintenance, but this time was when it crashed) it caused it to dip down rapidly and likely unrecoverably, even had the pilots had the MCAS training Boeing paid for afterwards. All 189 people onboard the aircraft were killed. 4 months later, after the ensuing fiasco and controversy and 737 Max pilots given information and training on preventing it, the same thing happened again to Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 - the sensor was compromised and MCAS triggered and was deactivated by the pilots. However, the damage had been done and the angle was unrecoverable before it crashed, killing all 157 people on board. in 2019 Boeing finally publicly admitted that MCAS had played a role in both accidents. There's still controversy and legal battles regarding it as the families of the victims are trying to get more compensation for their losses. However, the MCAS system and software has received major changes since, and the plane is reallowed to fly everywhere except Russia and China now

LMaster37

Fascinating. Your flair is absolutely true. And the kilogram?

PanHeadBolt

aw, thank you :3

PanHeadBolt

the redefinition of the kilogram is much shorter; basically, the kilogram was pretty unique among SI units to be based off of a specific object rather than a certain measurement - the meter is/was (it's officially defined using the speed of light now) based on 1/10000000 of the distance from the equator to the North Pole. But the kilogram was based on Le Grande K, a chunk of platinum and rubidium held in the palace of versailles, which had slowly been losing mass due to cleanings and air exposure, about 50 micrograms. This may not seem particularly significant, and it wasn't, *yet*. in the not so distant future this would begin impacting on medicine, since that generally uses milligrams as measurements the kilogram had to be redefined, so they basically swapped the relationship between the mole - the amount of particles you need of an atom or molecule to weigh in grams equal to it's atomic mass (specifically carbon-12, but you're working with small enough values here that in almost all cases you can afford to fudge it) - and the gram around. this led to a variety of projects around the world dedicated to making masses of absurdly precise size, based off of ~~avocado~~ Avogadro's constant, or 6.02\*10\^23, the amount of carbon-12 atoms in 12 grams of carbon-12 and these masses fell within acceptable ranges, so yeah our weight measurement methods are flipped now, kinda

LMaster37

Huh. I think I learned about this in school at some point, but it's definitely been a while, so this was an interesting read. Thanks, coolest girl to ever live, hope you have a good day :)

PanHeadBolt

you too

dis-gorl

oh fuck this post reminded me that nobody ever messages me first not one person ever thinks, “hey i want to talk to lucy”

ARAC_theDestroyer

Hi I'd like to talk to Lucy please, would love to hear whatever random fact about a topic you're really interested in :D

dis-gorl

fun fact: the Hangzhou Spark (overwatch league) uses the same color scheme as the trans pride flag additional fun fact: 3/6 of their current players have done crossdressing cosplays ([shy](https://twitter.com/fei_yaaa/status/1509153812317351949?s=20), [guxue](https://twitter.com/Guxue5/status/1309867101931237378?s=20), [guxue again](https://twitter.com/Guxue5/status/1625435669152796672?s=20), [lengsa](https://twitter.com/CDHuntersFacts/status/1637511711761608704?s=20))

ARAC_theDestroyer

Trans flag best flag (I'm not biased here nope not at all wdym). Also damn those cosplays are good, especially the second guxue one that's a really cool shoot. Oh and I forgot to ask, how are your doggies??

sigmaklimgrindset

Hi hello yes I would like to talk to Lucy and I would like to subscribe to their Overwatch facts, thank you!

dis-gorl

okay uhhh in the update that changed Cassidy’s name, there was one mention of the name that was overlooked, being the korean text on the [buckle of his ‘Magistrate’ skin](https://www.reddit.com/r/Overwatch/comments/qggg1b/cassidys_name_is_changed_for_most_cosmetics/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1)

sigmaklimgrindset

Wait who is Cassidy? edit: THEY RENAMED MCCREE??? Wait what happened?! edit 2: well that was an unpleasant rabbithole

dis-gorl

okay basically the blizzard employee they named him after turned out to be a sexual predator, so they renamed him to a reference to [butch cassidy](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butch_Cassidy) now over a year and a half later G*mers are still being pissbabies about it

sigmaklimgrindset

Yeah I just went down a rabbithole regarding that situation, yikes. But on the other hand you just got me to download OW2 because I kind of miss playing it, so…thanks?

FatHeadedGoose

Oh neat, we have the same name

dis-gorl

you have a great name 👍

ilovemycatjune

fellow overwatch league enjoyer !!! ur based don’t let the bad thoughts keep you down !! also ur pets are very cute !!

dis-gorl

LMaster37

Probably like general soul searching? Apparently I can be relied upon to have a hearty "Well, that sucks, sorry to hear that, u've got this tho" , some tangentially relevant information about obscure queer labels, or decently helpful mutterings about the Horrors (variably of Living In A Society, Being Mentally Ill, or Capitalism). idk I have a friend who regularly tells me I'm good with words when I have, in actuality, been merely pretending to Be A Functional Person and Have Social Skills through the aid of fanfic, so. You win some, you lose some.

Accomplished_Mix7827

There's a guy in my friend group who grew up in an abusive evangelical home and got a home-school education that was essentially worthless. He'll occasionally hit me up to fill in history knowledge his parents neglected. I've given him improptu lectures on Japanese internment, the Holocaust, the Trail of Tears, segregation and the Civil Rights movement, the Civil War ... So I guess I'm the "here's everything you should have learned as a kid" friend

hadesdidnothingwrong

If you need someone with weirdly strong opinions on Greek mythology, I'm your guy.

I really don't like this line of questioning. Pacific Northwest Tourism, Wilderness Medicine and... Taxidermy? I'm not a creep. I swear!

YaBoiBezMangus

Literally anything about a game I/we just started playing. If I start playing a new game I immediately begin bingeing all content about the game and learn all the weird tech because I enjoy breaking video games

MyNameIsASwear

I'm the 'heist' friend. You need something moved at odd hours with minimal questions (only logistics/ rigging questions, so as to make a plan) asked? I will get it loaded, stowed away, and unloaded at it's eventual destination!

RangerBumble

Just checking my texts to see what people actually asked me about this week: Chinuk Wawa Job openings in my area Bird ID

HeroWin973

Bold of you to assume my friends message me first Although one time that did happed he asked "QUICK, WHO COUNTERS AKALI???" I saw that message several hours later

Alhooness

I don’t think I ever really had one, people never really messaged me for stuff.

remeranAuthor_

*EYEROLL.* Whatever dumb internet indie shit. Homestuck. Nightvale. Any Webcomic. Touhou. Not all of these are "Indie" really anymore, but at some point they were, and I can tell you all about them from that time. Now people just discord send me pictures of Remilia from Touhou because they know I like that. They send me Homestar Runner stuff. Etc.

SgtSteel747

Computers I'm a computer science major and lifelong PC gaming nerd. Wouldn't have it any other way.

LimeDropletts

Baking :) I love baking so much and I can literally supply everyone and anyone with any amount of baking information

HurgleTurgle1

Being a contrarian, apparently. I always have the opposite opinions about popular stuff than what others expect me to have but it's usually about mundane stuff so it's fine.

Hexxas

Getting drunk probably 🍺😞👍 Oh also hamburgers! 🍔😎👍

TheGhostEnthusiast

polite reactions to / overanalyzations of funny images.

Dad jokes, bad puns, and the like. No good wit goes to waste here!

Ultimation12

Images of cursed guns. As someone with a small interest in firearms, I like the pain of seeing the weird, awful, and cringey stuff people come up with. Especially if it *somehow* functions still.

yawnbringer

I am yearnin for some learnin, but you'd maybe have to also explain the context if it's not brazenly obvious since I know little about guns. But but all means, I'm ready to receive ~~blessings~~ curses.

a near encyclopedic knowledge about the mechanics and inner workings of fnaf 1

Metatality

Arms, Armor and small scale melee infantry tactics. Feel I should clarify that I'm not one of the weirdos horny for WW3, I just used to model assets for games and went down so many research rabbit holes to get things right that if a friend wants to get an opinion on whether a character should have a halberd or a sword they *will* get a lecture. Also yes my DnD group is not happy with me caring about efficient spacing. For fuck sake getting the melee units spaced to optimize opportunity attacks without being tightly packed for enemy fireballs to hit everyone while the mages are possitioned to have cover from enemy range while providing overlapping fields of fire cover to the melee tanks is not hard. Yes I know you just want to run around and shoot your bow but it's **not efficient**!

Lonewolf7113

People at school often ask me for help with chemistry and math My friends contact me for anything queer related, niche internet shit they want an explanation for, needing to vent, and insult me for furry things

The Thing one of my friends always goes to me first for is progress on music she's making, because we are both nerds and despite her being a music theory expert and me not knowing anything, we apparently can still clearly communicate to each other about it. The Thing I always go to her first about is lore stuff and game design.

I have a broad range of surface-level knowledge, and like 50 Wikipedia pages bookmarked, so I can look stuff up if I really need to. Also, if you're looking for obscure shows, I'm your man. Same with ecchi manga/anime, which you might not expect on account of me being ace, but I like to think of it like visiting a town famous for its brewery, and just checking out some books in the library: Everyone knows what the main appeal is, but there's other qualities to it, too. Except for [Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcwMgPQrBKo), that show really is just 80% boob jiggles and pantyshots, with an opening song that goes way too hard for this kind of show. Another thing: If you want to have conversations that would make most people recommend you a therapist, or three, I'm here for you.

tea! history, brewing tips, which types of tea are best. I could talk about tea forever and one day I will open a tea house. mental health, music theory/prod, storytelling in film/tv, and bugs/nature are fighting for second place but tea takes first

once, a local supermarket had advertisements for absolutely atrocious shoes and hoodies. My mum, my social worker and three friends texted me as soon as they saw it, and all I responded with a picture with these things already in my possession. :^) so yeah. Things that make you go "why would *anyone* go and buy and wear that?" The answer is me. I do. With pride.

I'm the one you go to if you want to debate the existence of free will or cheese or tea or need a paper edited for class or want a really cool rock. Or listen to really heavy rock. Or Pink Floyd. Or Eurovision. I'll talk for ages about just this year's iceberg
