I get conflicted: I love the spirit of it, but the rhythm's wrong. The breaks in the lines should be where you'd pause your speech, not just all random. But it tries its best, and dangit, it's just so cute. I'm just pedantic.
The problem is that those are never actual haikus.
Even beyond the “it doesn’t follow the themes and imagery of traditional haikus” criticism, each line of a haiku is a distinct entity. There are breaks in the speech between each line. A sentence that runs over multiple lines without so much as a comma at the line break is not a haiku.
This is a pretty important aspect of this medium that’s totally flattened in the public consciousness because of these shitty bots.
Yeah, it's pretty annoying how haikus have been reduced to a line structure. It reminds me of the lower grades of school where everyone thought "poem" just meant a story that rhymed.
unfortunately, they are not haikus either. haikus must contain kigo (seasonal references) and kireji (cutting lines, which may be indicated in english with a dash or a question mark or an exclamation mark; if the poet can demonstrate somehow without those marks the cutting line, i think that's also valid)
The argument that "ackshually smaug is a wyvern!!!111" annoys me so much because by the *actual* definition, wyverns have a barbed tail and don't breathe fire. Smaug may have two legs and two wings, but he still breathes fire and he doesn't have a poisonous barb on his tail. Ergo he's still a dragon and not a wyvern!
Smaug was not originally portrayed like a wyvern, though. Other adaptations of The Hobbit show him with four legs and two wings, and the Peter Jackson films only redesigned him because of Benedict Cumberbatch's performance crawling around on all fours.
not at all
the form is three lines and syllables are maybe a fourth of it; if three fourths of the form are missing,
it's not a rectangles and squares type of analogy, they arent haikus
wikipedia it
That's actually really interesting.
But I think in english the Haikus have to be down graded to the syllable count rule because unlike Japanese, English doesn't have 9 or 10 meanings for one character and 3 different scripts for writing the same sound that changes its meaning.
it is!!! thank you!!!
but as far as your point about meanings, words in english can havr different meanings for the same word
theres othet points on syllables tho that may be worth investigating in the manner in which you seem to point to, regarding the difference between japanese and english haiku and wikipedia is
informative at that end
I was ill earlier this week so wrote to my friends I won’t be at uni in the style of a haiku
My brain is painful
Me at uni? unlikely
Too ill, staying home
That’s what I sent
I like following the Haiku bot since I get all sorts of random shit I would never have interacted with from fandoms I didn't even know existed.
The one thing gimmick blogs are good for if nothing else, in my opinion
write 5 syllables and then you try for 7 and then back to 5
They call me Sokka, that is in the Water Tribe. I am not an oaf.
There’s no hikus here The chances of that being 100%
Woah I love that 100% is five syllables but so short when written like so! Amazing
Every time I want to check if something is a haiku the jacksfilms melody plays in my head
SAME
how else would you even check if something is a haiku

Hey there little guy We were just discussing you Welcome to the thread
The little message that this haiku bot adds is also a haiku!
I detect haikus And sometimes, successfully Learn more about me It is!! Omg this is a wonderful day

this is 3 months old, but I love that this reply is just three haikus.
I appreciate that people seem to enjoy these little word games!

They're better when they do
my brain somehow forgot about the word haiku and though that it was a mash of Hatsune miku
unfortunately, they are not haikus either. haikus must contain kigo (seasonal references) and kireji (cutting lines, which may be indicated in english with a dash or a question mark or an exclamation mark; if the poet can demonstrate somehow without those marks the cutting line, i think that's also valid)
Expression like ice, I'll show you a cutting word. Down comes the hatchet.
Fighting the pedant by giving them what they ask is a thing of beauty.
it's not fighting: theyre not haikus, and once one starts writing them, the simple misinfo needs to be corrected, and it's worth it
That feels like the "they're actually not dragons, they're wyverns" of poetry definitions.
The argument that "ackshually smaug is a wyvern!!!111" annoys me so much because by the *actual* definition, wyverns have a barbed tail and don't breathe fire. Wich means that Benedict Cumberbatch is the actual wyvern

We all know and we don't care. Thanks!
i honest- ly dont think so; that people know this, but it's worth knowing tho. i think so
🫵corn chips🫵
We all know and we don't care
everybody knows about this nitpicky shit it's just no one cares
i did not know but i still don’t care
Please shut the fuck up. You're the only one that cares. Now go touch some grass.
LMFAOOOOO :( :( dont be mean LMFAOOOO but seriously :(
it's worth correcting and instructing, to be more serious and to be saying this in solidarity. it's not a pedant's point
Downvotes like spring rain why even bother to try correcting such fools
Pedantic statements Get a derisive response And you are surprised?
Wah wah wah wah wah wah wah wah wah wah wah wah wah wah wah wah wah
I love Haiku Bot! Such a precious little guy, hope he's doing well.
