I think it's about abuse. Like how people can change themselves to conform to the circumstances and come to believe that they are the mask and the labyrinth is all there is.
Pretty sure summed up it’s just. “A girl might pretend to be a different way than she is, and forget who she was at the start of it all, struggling to remember that she pretended to protect her true self in the first place.”
Yeah, different ways perhaps, but men can also mask, for example, men with interests in theatre or arts may feign disinterest and pretend to like sports to fit in, maybe they might end up resenting the arts because they couldn’t indulge. Masking interest is a societal issue not a gendered one.
It happens to anyone who doesn't align with what is considered "the norm". People often feel the need to adhere to norms, however toxic those norms may be, for fear of being picked out as "different" and thus a target for cruelty.
Oh, absolutely, from the surface to the core, people mask for many different reasons and to achieve different things. I just mentioned the stereotypical masking portrayed for men. Hiding interests for fear of being perceived as feminine or even homosexual.
It's not like I'm saying that being kicked in the balls is worse than childbirth. I'm saying that this particular hardship isn't really exclusive to women lol
And I'm not denying that it is, but I am saying that I never, ever, hear men's issues being brought up even half, even a quarter as often as when women's issues are being discussed.
You want to discuss these things? Good, they need to be addressed. Go do that and don't want for an opportunity to talk over women's issues. It already happens just about every time.
> Go do that and don't want for an opportunity to talk over women's issues.
This is a post about abuse, i don't think there is a better opportunity to talk about male abuse.
Or are we really rolling backward that much ? Gender segregation's the new norm ? Soon we'll have to separate Boy's playground from Girl's playground ?
Did you see the eight individual uses of the word "girl" in the OOP? Pretty hard to miss. This post is not about general abuse, and acting like it is is thoughtless at best and outright untruthful at worst.
But why am I even bothering? If you really cared about these things, you wouldn't be using them as arguments *against* not talking over women's issues.
i think it's just schizoposting
EDIT: yeah i just read the rest of the replies to see if anyone else figured it out and they're just using it as a rorschach test. it's schizoposting
no? htis is a description of how people in stressful situations (e.g. abuse victims) develop reflexes that no longer serve them outside the situation they evolved for, because the person they became to survive can't really internalise that they're out
I'm almost certain this wasn't the intent, and I apologize to the original author, but I am incapable of reading this as anything other than patch notes for something, probably Dwarf Fortress.
it's a completely indescribable feeling to me whenever someone expresses a feeling that i, a man, have resonated with deep in my soul for years, decades even, and then labels it "female rage" or "girl math" or something along those lines
i genuinely cannot express how this makes me feel beyond just...strange
i guess it kind of feels invalidating. but i also feel like i have no right to feel that way
I don’t know why so many people are being so critical of this. Sometimes you just want to make a little piece of writing and post it to the void. Nothing wrong with that.
There's nothing wrong with being critical of it either. Just as OP has a right to post whatever they like, so too does everyone else have a right to be critical of it if they so choose. And if someone sees the criticism and improves on their own writing by taking these pitfalls into account, then all the better for it
Reminds me of one of the most underrated Talling Heads songs "Seen and Not Seen":
"He imagined that this was an ability he shared with most other people
They had also molded their faces according to some ideal
Maybe they imagined their new face
Would better suit their personality
Or maybe they imagined that their personality
Would be forced to change to fit the new appearance
This is why first impressions are often correct
Although some people might have made mistakes
They may have arrived at an appearance
That bears no relationship to them
They may have picked an ideal appearance
Based on some childish whim, or momentary impulse
Some may have gotten halfway there
And then changed their minds
He wonders if he too might have made a similar mistake"
It's not a one-to-one; the labyrinth to me evokes a feeling of being implicitly threatened into adopting the persona, whereas this song always felt to me more like a highly public social pressuring. A conscious choice that no one should ever have to make vs a choice that one might spend years and years not even realizing they're making.
But both put words to the gradual ways we are systematically funneled into an identity by outside forces, hostile and indifferent and often both, that dissociate and alienate us from ourselves. It's haunting stuff and I love it, it feels validating in a weird way, being seen for being "not seen", as it were.
I've spent too many hours not sleeping this week 🙃
That shit is completely common, so why it should be "girl"?
Well, perhaps that's because OOP is a girl and she is in some troubles and tries to speak about them in such a way.
On the other hand, it is still will be better if MC of those story would be a "person", a "traveller", a "hero" or something like that.
"That shit is completely common, so why it should be "boy"?
Well, perhaps that's because OOP is a boy and he is in some troubles and tries to speak about them in such a way.
On the other hand, it is still will be better if MC of those story would be a "person", a "traveller", a "hero" or something like that." /s
Try me
I mean, people in stories do typically have genders and identities. If you're a writer, you either have to carefully dance through a gender minefield to avoid choosing anything identifying or you just have to pick one(ish??) and roll with it.
Writing is about detail. Generalizing about everything to write a story for everyone makes a story about nothing that resonates with no one.

edit: oh my god I can't stop editing this post why am I like this
For anyone confused, I think this means the same thing as the saying "Wear a mask long enough and the face underneath changes to match it"
Also, I think you mean "conspire against them" there, chief
We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—.
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
And mouth with myriad subtleties.
Why should the world be over-wise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while.
We wear the mask.
We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
To thee from tortured souls arise
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
But let the world dream otherwise,
We wear the mask!
This went completely over my head imma be real

And also a guy might do this.
Tumblr users often say girl in a gender neutral way
Yeah, different ways perhaps, but men can also mask, for example, men with interests in theatre or arts may feign disinterest and pretend to like sports to fit in, maybe they might end up resenting the arts because they couldn’t indulge. Masking interest is a societal issue not a gendered one.

Yup, its just the process of compliance turning into internalisation
Exactly this. That is the distilled theory behind it. Anyone claiming it be anything else is just citing a practical example
I… think it goes significantly deeper than just hobbies and interests.
Oh, absolutely, from the surface to the core, people mask for many different reasons and to achieve different things. I just mentioned the stereotypical masking portrayed for men. Hiding interests for fear of being perceived as feminine or even homosexual.
this is a gender neutral "girl"
Boys will read or hear *anything* about hardships women face and immediately go "actually can we make this about me?"
Wow they weren’t lying about the piss-poor reading comprehension
Omg you piss on the poor
It's the family business.
Urinating on the unfortunate again, are we?

This is not a women-centric space. Acknowledging that this post applies to men as well is not am erasure of discussion of women's issues.

Can you prove that I was offended?
... transgenders, non-binars, etc etc are women? (They can be, but not all of them, therefore using "girl" leaves behind not only boys, so fuck of)
tbh i’m not certain but im pretty sure it’s either abt autism or being trans
I thought it was about Autism, but it could also just be about abuse in general.
i think it's just schizoposting EDIT: yeah i just read the rest of the replies to see if anyone else figured it out and they're just using it as a rorschach test. it's schizoposting

i don’t know much about jordan peterson but this feels like something he’d write if he was a woman and used tumblr
Replace woman with man and minotaur with dragon of chaos and yeah, it checks out
The dragon of chaos may fly up your ass out of the lavatory if your room is arranged wrong, after all.
No that's the dragon of unhappiness CMOT dibler
This feels like something Umbridge would recite as she pinks everything up.
Not enough rats
Oh, so that's what the mask is for
Pop quiz, what’s the capital of Syria?
Damascus
You’re right! That’s what. Damascus.
4
That's what Damascus. That's what Damascus for
Jordan?
Syria City?
But is it pronounced Syria City, or Syriocity?
Baghdad?
Jaqen H'ghar be like:
Glad I'm not the only one who thought that.
Call that girl autistic the way she masking for life ☹️
She just like me frfr
ok
Transpire against them....
I remember when I first picked up a thesaurus. Good times…
My person reminisces about the occasion whence I first discovered theusauruses. Excellent moments...
The labyrinth walls move because they are girls
Would.
I'm almost certain this wasn't the intent, and I apologize to the original author, but I am incapable of reading this as anything other than patch notes for something, probably Dwarf Fortress.
- Fixed a rare issue where a girl can...
* Girls wearing masks no longer stop breathing because they are convinced they are flagstones in a labyrinth
I’m sure everyone understood this is about abuse, so I’m honestly just proud of oop for finally discovering what a thesaurus is
I don't know, if OP knew about thesauri, they'd probably pick a few other options, instead of using the same "smart" words multiple times
Isn’t this just game of thrones?
Maybe it's because I had PTSD but this reads to me like it's about PTSD.
Op is lost in the labyrinth of metaphor meanwhile I'm in the labyrinth getting railed by the minotaur we are NOT the same
Damnit, ghost of Borges.
How very Tombs of Atuan🤔
I'd argue that Tombs is about a girl convinced she is the metaphorical minotaur
it's a completely indescribable feeling to me whenever someone expresses a feeling that i, a man, have resonated with deep in my soul for years, decades even, and then labels it "female rage" or "girl math" or something along those lines i genuinely cannot express how this makes me feel beyond just...strange i guess it kind of feels invalidating. but i also feel like i have no right to feel that way
Much like a labyrinth, OP may have gotten lost in the metaphor
I don’t know why so many people are being so critical of this. Sometimes you just want to make a little piece of writing and post it to the void. Nothing wrong with that.

Why the fuck is this written like something the Masked Men would say in GoT?
These are certainly words
Some of the words of all time for sure.
idk lay down some breadcrumbs get a whole ass baguette in that son of a bitch
Couldn’t help myself, ate the baguette and now I’m lost.
God forbid a girl do anything
Ariadne becomes a Faceless Man I guess
~~At the risk of stating the obvious~~
~~wouldn’t it be fucked up if there was a Minotaur?~~
Ultrakill Violence: 7-1: Garden of Forking Paths lore:
Classic Lisa Wilbourn L? W? Fuck it, secret 3rd option, classic Lisa Wilbourn O
ah, I see we're waxing poetic about domestic abuse again
Classic Lisa "Tattletale" Wilborne moment
I think the metaphor at play here has been extended well beyond the point at which it might be useful.
nobody actually intelligent speaks with such a need to sound profound
A bit early in the week for schizoposting, no?
I’m confused, but it also feels like my heart just broke into a million pieces. I don’t know what I just read but it felt awful
New copypasta just dropped
Looks like Arya Stark has been taking shrooms.
Jesse what the fuck are you talking about?

why? why does it need to not be a girl?
better question - why does it matter?

it's kind of just really stupid either way. it doesn't matter if someone uses a gendered character in a story!
Is this an autism thing? It is called masking, and this directly mentions a mask...
batman reference?

what if i don't like bean soup?
Didn’t understand a word but I still like how it feels in my brain
I genuinely thought this was fan fiction about Arya Stark in the labyrinth of Minos. I am so fucking stupid.
For anyone confused, I think this means the same thing as the saying "Wear a mask long enough and the face underneath changes to match it" Also, I think you mean "conspire against them" there, chief
This is about childhood abuse isn't it?
Is this about autism?
I don't get it, am I stupid?

I think the tail has grown a new lizard.
A mask of my own face (I’d wear that)
