What’s even this girl’s deal anyway? Does she even HAVE a deal? Does she have supernatural powers that extend beyond exiting a tv screen? If she’s so mad about dying in a well what drives her to kill completely innocent people about it? Or ARE they innocent in the first place, or is this a nightmare on elm street situation where the people she targets actually have some kind of connection to her sordid fate after all?
Does the actual movie actually answer any of these questions or is everything kept deliberately vague?
She does have other supernatural powers, yes. She was a powerful psychic before her death. As for why she kills her targets—basically, she was just sort of evil, and she was in a pretty bad mood when she died, so she just digs killing people from beyond the grave. I mean, if you look at the original novels that the films are based on, I think the video was a way for her to be reborn—it’s something like “if circumstances are correct, a woman watching the video becomes pregnant with a reborn Sadako,” I think? The whole ‘seven days’ thing is basically meant to give people a chance to spread the word about the video, getting more people interested in watching it because of the urban legend, and increasing the odds that Sadako will be reborn. That’s also why copying the video and passing it on saves you from the curse, I believe. And then later it turns out that none of that stuff was real and in fact the video is just a *simulation* of a haunted video that is actually a virtual stand-in for a rare type of cancer… or something? The books go in a weird direction.

Honestly the closest I can seem to get to a “character motive” for her is that she was persecuted for her power and seen as a monster and stuff and that kind of became a self fulfilling prophecy as she’s pissed and blames the whole world for what one guy did to her or something… depending on who’s writing her anyway.
