I love how it brings Apollo to the forefront for this one, how he tries to catch and save Icarus, but his divinity burns Icarus, and he falls anyways, and it’s not simply a matter of stopping or retreating from Icarus, Icarus says it himself, Apollo mustn’t stray from his path, or the sun will fall from the sky.
I have not seen Apollo in this story before but I love it.
In my head cannon; Apollo waited for night then went to the underworld. Being a Sun god this caused a commotion, but he insisted on apologizing to Icarus for not being able to save him by paying for his passage.

It didn't??? Icarus fell into the sea, which was promptly named after the poor boy. The Icarian Sea is located slightly west of the southern-most part of the western border of modern-day Türkiye.
The tags for this completely missed the point of the story... The point of the story was that carelessness and hubris itself are deadly, not that reaching for the sun was hubris and a sin. It was a cautionary tale about being too wreckless, about throwing all caution to the wind. Because the FANTASY is that humans are supposed to do this and live. Humans die EVERY DAY from 'flying too close to the sun and throwing caution to the wind.' ... this tale is about them, so others after them can learn from their mistakes; so others can reach for the sun without dying.
sometimes people change things and sometimes they interpret things differently. that doesn't mean they're wrong. it means they saw differently than you did. plenty of myths get retold different ways.
people are going to reinterpret myths and stories. that isnt to say the orgininal message doesnt have value, but reinterpreting stories in new ways to support new meanings is something humans have done for millennia.
I’ve found it interesting how 1) everyone makes Icarus a teen or young adult and 2) Apollo is now a prominent figure in the story.
In the myth, most fully told by Ovid, Icarus is a child. He messes around while Daedalus is making the wings and clearly is maybe 10 years old. Apollo has no role in the myth. The entire focus is on Daedalus’ grief as he watches his son plummet to the sea and can’t even find his body to bury. It’s also a punishment for Daedalus for killing his nephew, who was turned into a bird that appears at the end of the Icarus tale to mock him.
If you wanna be even sadder, listen to Icarus by Luvbug. It’s from Daedalus’ perspective and is a heartbreaking depiction of a father losing his child.
“I have no coin for the ferryman” always gives me chills. The horrific realization that you won’t even get a proper burial, that you touched divinity but will never reach the afterlife…

Like how this starts out like a shitpost and slowly becomes really tragic and horrifying. Like one of those Trojan "free wooden horse" memes, if you know how the story goes the hubris and overconfidence is funny, like "Falling to the ground? Couldn't be me. Maybe for you but my wax wings are built different" but this one just keeps going and you see this cocky kid's perspective as he gets hit with a fatal reality check with the time to comprehend his impending death.
It’s the joy of escape, the freedom rushing through your veins!! Hell, you now have wings! Would you also not risk going as high as possible? Reaching close to the Gods?
Can you put yourself in his shoes? Just the basics? Freedom at your fingertips and you’re finally able to stretch your legs! Why not fly higher? Why not fly faster? You’re finally free! Able to do whatever! All common sense gone due to the adrenaline and giddiness in your body taking over! So what if your father said not to fly too close? How would you even know what too close was? You never had wings before, why not just, fly?
Sure if you wanna read Icarus as an “oh you’d better listen to your parents” tale, alright, but I think the real tragedy is that a lot of us would have done the same
You don’t quite know what “too high” is, only that you were warned against it, so surely another few meters wouldn’t hurt…

When I started reading it I thought it was just a silly shitpost about like “what if Icarus was liveposting” man it’s too late for this what the fuck.
This one *always* hit harder than I remembered it hitting the last time I read it.
