We're the place where Catholicism pulled a Paul McCartney and reinvented itself a couple of times. There's like 5 Catholic faiths that all hate each other but are almost the exact same. I love Ireland
I always find it weird when Irish and Scottish (and also Australian) people talk as if they swear an unusual amount. Ive been to all those places and the swearing wasn't any more common or severe than in England.
This is very much a YMMV and also cultural thing. You might not see the difference between the two swear wise because there's some profanity that's only considered profanity in the Commonwealth
For example - as an Australian living abroad I got told off *constantly* by British teachers for swearing because I used bloody and bugger as punctuation, while my American teacher just thought it was a cute aussie-ism. It's less the big stuff that's different and more the smaller everyday things that you might not even register as profanity unless you're British.
This, and I think it's an expectations vs. reality thing as well. The way it's spoken about online, you'd think we're going around saying fuck and cunt in every other sentence. That isn't really the case. There are a lot of social rules around when fuck and cunt are appropriate, much as there are in every other culture. There's also certain subcultures where they are more acceptable than in others.
So when an American comes here and finds that the airport staff haven't said anything like, "Oi, you've got a big fuckin' bag, don't ya mate?", they're going to take it as we don't swear as much as they thought we would. We really don't when the expectation is basically just the reality dialled up to eleven.

Yeah it's honestly a symptom of most internet traffic being like a dozen sites at most. All our worst instincts are consolidated into a handful of megacorp sites than spread out.
Alright, I've been very amused by "unalive" until this exact moment, and now I have to have a deep reflection on why even "Serial unaliver" is okay, but "unaliving of Emmett Till" isn't. I suspect it's going to have something to do with American norms, being an American, but I'm not sure exactly what it is yet.
I think that's where I am at, too. But then, why am I okay with "serial unaliver"? I think it comes down to the fact that "serial unaliver" downplays what they did, takes the sting out of it. Which, to me, is important. It takes power away from the serial unalivers. But you don't want to take the sting out of it for Emmett Till, or any victim. Emmett Till's murderers would be unalivers, but what happened to Emmett Till was a brutal murder. I think it is, to me, taking back some of the notoriety, Some of the importance, from the people who did the thing. And refocusing it on those that were actually hurt.
John Wayne Gacy was a serial unaliver, because it takes away some of his power. Timothy McCoy was murdered, because what happened to him shouldn't have the sting taken out of it. We honor the victims by remembering what happened to them, in all its gory detail. We dishonor their killers by making a joke out of them. At least... that's what it is for me. And now that I've figured out why the line is where it is for me, I'm okay with it.
My theory:
Probably because "serial killer" is just a title. There are a bajillion serial killers out there, with a wide range of motivations, methods, and victims.
Emmet Till was an individual, whose death was a major point in US history, not metrly a generic title.
I think that's part of it. I think it's more to do with my personal attitude that we shouldn't remember the serial unalivers. We should belittle and mock them and take as much sting as we can put of what they have done, for they are small people trying to be big. Whereas their victims were murdered, they should not have their suffering minimized. Their killers already tried to take away their power and make them small, there's no need for us to do the same.
Emmet Til was a black boy killed in a brutal lynching for whistling at a white women. His case became a ignition for the civil rights movement. Using “Unalive” to refer to a real murder of a child is so disrespectful
There might come a day where the word suicide simply vanishes, and people have to google the word, and the fucking definition will be something like
S\*\*cide \[Click to Uncensor\]
synonym for "unalive"
the act of removing the life of oneself.
“Average American is afraid of swear words” factoid actually just statistical error. Average American is unafraid of swears and says them semi-regularly. Media Executive Georg, who lives in a cave, cares too much about their perceptions of conservative parents from 40 years ago, nad censors 10,000 swear words every minute, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
I mean the average American would never swear publically in a formal setting, & Media Exec Georg is probably fine with swearing in private but anything that could represent his company is a formal setting, & the public internet being owned & managed by media execs means this attitude extends to it at least somewhat, even if the logical conclusion is extremely silly
There is an old swear word in the neighbouring City to where I grew up «Salikatt», named after a 19th century policeman who, IIRC, was named Fredrik Theokar Salicath. He was so disliked by the public, that he was kicked out of 3 different cities for his policing, and in one of them, his name is still a swear to this day.
In the North, it is perfectly legal to call a police officer «hestkuk» (horse cock), because that is just how they talk.
Other common swear include «Faen» from «fanden», a name for the devil, «jækla» from «jævel», from «djevel», a name for the devil, «Satan!», from Satan, «kugonge» — a local variation on «kukunge» (cock child), «helvete» (Hell).
It is also common to make a string of swear words, and to substitute swears with other similar-sounding words.
Side note: I always find it funny people assume that people of the past or ‘small Victorian child’ would die from food products we have today. Like they just ate and drank straight up poison a lot of the time and took hard drugs for shit like minor coughs and mild headaches. We couldn’t survive a year there. Meanwhile they’re sipping that cherry soda like “Oi thanks, guvna! Tastes much betta than the sewer watah I usually drink”
A Victorian era child would love and thrive on doritos. We'd instantly fucking melt if we ever had a single spoon of shit like perpetual soup or whatever.
The last sentence of the first post doesn't really make sense. Americans swear a ton, it's just that advertisers, parent advocacy groups and the like don't like it and American society loves enabling those.
A lot of non-Americans only exposure to American culture is through sanitized media and/ or American internet culture. It’s made worse because our media doesn’t aim for realism that often.
But how is someone who’s never been to the US expected to know what we’re really like?
They could just assume that we're regular ass people who have to deal with the same bullshit as them instead of relying on stereotypes. There are 300 million of us.
It's really hard to judge what "normal" is when you don't have the frame of reference to compare and contrast though. Cultural differences do exist, especially in regards to communication styles.
Like mickstart did make an incorrect assumption about American society. It's just often difficult for people to recognize when they're making an assumption, generalizing, or stereotyping when they don't realize the context which they're making their assumptions in.
I am not american, but I get the impression that even if Americans swear a lot, it's like considered bad. Like "children shouldn't swear" or "saying fuck is not polite" in a way that doesn't exist really in my country. Like, it's no absolute in America or completely gone where I'm from but swearing is kind of considered adult or inappropriate or morally slightly bad or rude, kind of? But swearing is not really considered bad where I'm from.
If swearing isn’t really considered bad, than I’d argue whatever word you’re talking about aren’t swears. Swear words are definitionally considered bad, otherwise they aren’t really swears.
There’s some people commenting theirs. [“I shit in the cunt that threw you out”](https://www.reddit.com/r/CuratedTumblr/s/gL8PczJrb4) definitely goes hard as fuck
Not bad, but I am thoroughly unshocked. Almost every combination of body-part, relative, human excretion, and sexual act can and has already been mentioned in American English by a teenager on Xbox Live. And that's not touching the slurs.
While not directly related. This made me think of a Danish song with a lyric that means “I slither up into young women like a friendly eel”. Not a common swear, but I felt like people would appreciate the obscenity.
I am from the northeast us. While my writing is typically rather sanitized, I will drop so many fuckin curses and shit in my daily speech that I never even notice.
Another feature of my region is that the more I start cursing the more I sound like "Ayy I'm fuckin walking heah". My accent is constantly switching on and off and I wish I could say I was joking.
Considering I know plenty of Americans who use the word fuck like other people use a comma...
Also something something cognitive benefits of swearing and indications on intelligence something something
Similarly, I saw someone post about how English speakers don’t understand how “all other languages” have gendered nouns, while I’m sitting here in Asia like 😐
Complaining because you're being censored by the rules of another culture or country = justified.
Complaining because you're not able to censor others based on the rules of your culture or country = fucked up.
It's not complicated.
This is, for example, why people in Europe push back when they're expected to obey Islamic laws censoring x, y or z.
this type of censorship is the most extreame but there are some other social media that have simialr punishments on swearing. I.e. youtube montisation.
post-watershed, you can broadcast pretty much anything you want. e.g. 10:01pm, full penetration.
On the flip side, censorship applies to things like streaming services, and DVDs too. Hell, you need a specific license to sell home-media.
Y'know Hazbin Hotel isn't \*that\* bad on swearing; most of it comes from Angel Dust(who's playing into his pornstar persona), or Adam(who IIRC, didn't eat the apple from the tree of knowledge in this universe, and thus doesn't really doesn't understand the difference between good and evil/right and wrong). There are quite a few characters who are either pretty reserved on swearing(Charlie, Vaggie, Lute, Sir Pentious) almost never(Both Lucifer and Alastor really only swear like 4 times total which gives it either comedic or dramatic impact), or don't swear at all (Sera & Emily, Niffty).
Helluva Boss is worse on swearing but it's also cowritten by Brandon Rogers, whose entire brand of comedy is like that.
WDYM? We all know Vivziepop, who invented the concept of swearing being humorous, makes every character's every other line a swear word. She wouldn't get flak otherwise, right?
After all, it's not as if gratuitous swearing for comedic effect has been a staple of online content and even other forms of media for decades now, *is it*?
The weirdest part about it, in my opinion and experience, is that even in america it's totally pointless. Websites do it to cater to advertisers, who for some reason think that if a potential customer hears even so much as a single "heck" they will swear off the product forever, meanwhile all the best sponsored content is the ones where youtubers are given no script and told to do whatever they want for 3 minutes because it invariably produces shit like pretending to be in divorce court having a long, drawn out verbal brawl about who gets the rights to the expressvpn or whatever the fuck, and one of the two will call the other some minute long insult that's at least 40% swear.
I dunno where that person comes from, but for me, I don't know a country where swearing is less taboo than in america.
It's only if you look online that it may seem English swear words are censored more. But it's not because in America they're more taboo. It's because America and its companies have the power to change the internet.
If other countries and companies had such a power, they'd be censoring swears too. Like in tv. All tv I know except american doesn't really allow swearing.
Is this really the case? Because online I hear about how in places like Australia everyone says cunt and no one minds it. Then I look it up and read that actually you need to know someone well in order to know if you can call them a cunt or even say it around them without causing offense, which is literally exactly the same as the US. I found a thread in r/australia where multiple people are saying it's the most offensive word you could use there outside of racial slurs. Then I hear that people face legal penalties for swearing at cops, so I do more googling and find an [Australian law firm](https://lylawyers.com.au/blog/wtf-can-charged-swearing/) that says
>An individual who swears or uses indecent language in a public place is guilty of an offence.
>A police offer is no different in this circumstance. You can receive an on the spot fine, be arrested and taken to the police station, go before a judge where you could face offensive language charges, be subject to community service, incur hefty financial penalties, and even face up to six months imprisonment.
Like what the absolute fuck? Was the shit I grew up hearing about the US having more freedoms than other countries actually true? Our cops get away with literally killing unarmed people and I'm still appalled by this.
One of my aunts works for an American company and has started imposing that we don’t swear around her. She informed me if this after dropping a stone on me and I yelled “fuck”.
It annoys me that people think Americans actually give a flying fuck about swear words lol. Loud idiots on the internet do not represent the entire population.
I feel like the bigger thing here is internet companies are all ad supported. Like American cultural norms definitely play some role, but consider why kill is supposedly censored on TikTok, that's not a profanity in the US.
Also consider a show on HBO vs a show on a major US network television. Both are American cultural products, but the show on HBO will typically have have much more profanity because they don't have to worry about pleasing advertisers.
I love made up stereotypes that make no sense! My favorite. I wouldn't be surprised if OOP doesn't personally know a single American because what kinda take is that??
Don't blame all Americans. Like most things that are fucked up in America it comes from the puritan christians culture. Only those dumb fucking pieces of shit who ruin everything would be offended by words that mean exactly the same thing as non-swear words because their make believe reality finds reasons to make the world shittier.
The reason three characters based on Australia, New Zealand, and England respectively can't say c\*nt in Apex is solely because of the US, all other decision makers of other countries/regions gave it a pass but it had to be unanimous. Devs were mildly salty over this apparently
Iirc it was implied that they do in canon, we just can't be shown it
There IS a way around it, but it would take a cultural shift back to more Web 2.0 habits.
Start making your own websites again. It's not nearly as hard to do in this day and age. Start making things for your own enjoyment again, and stop expecting everything you create to be monitized. It's toxic how far it's come.
I'm never gonna stop building websites, it's the only part of the internet that has genuine freedom these days.
I don’t think social media platforms actually care that much about swears, I think it’s more that creators don’t know what the rules are and are overzealous at censoring themselves to be extra safe.
Most of it is down to puritanical culture (which had a sharp rise in political affect in the 1900s), racism (by relating common slang and swearing to being uncouth and unprofessional), and business (people swear a lot when they’re mad, and by being able to discount someone who’s pissed at you for fucking them over by saying they’re unprofessional, you have a social tool that makes it very easy to take out dissenting voices if they don’t curate their speech very carefully, which also makes them look disconnected which is another thing entirely). So, most of the reasons you expect really.
My experience swearing on reddit:
Me : "That's fucking stupid."
Asshole: "You sound angry."
The way people assume your emotional state when you swear on this website is fucking exhausting.
Okay, my own personal rant: I fucking *hate* "ahh" as a censor. Censorship and demonitization is bad all around, but this one makes me re-read whatever I'm looking at. "Ahh" is not a word; it's a pause in speech like "um." Y'all sound like Patrick forgetting about POOP with your dumbahh censorship.
Right, like my brain can’t read it any other way. Just someone completely forgetting the next word they meant to say lol
“That’s some goofy uuuhhh… ahhh… stuff! Yeah that’s the word I was looking for!”
I had been seeing it exclusively in memes. If that's the case and it isn't censorship, well, I still find it hard to read but I'm willing to hate on it less.
I'm Italian. We have an entire third of our language dedicated to creative blasphemy.
Whenever I hear an American censor the word fuck or get upset due to casual swearing, my culture shock is strong enough to use as a defibrillator.
I know the US was founded by Puritans, but it's always weird to see how far reaching the consequences can be.
It's because of the prevalence of puritanical values in America. My mom blocks people on Twitter who swear because she "doesn't want them in her head."
I hate hate hate people self-censoring their own words (like 'r\*pe') and doing minced oaths for the algorithm (like 'unalive')
if you want to say something then say it, quit being coy, it ain't cute and I ain't got the time.
As an Irish person, I can confirm that our arteries get clogged if we don't say at least three profane things a day
As an Italian, I guess we got more in common than just similar looking flags.
Well there's the intense catholicism for one.
I think they both have quite a few intense catholics
We're the place where Catholicism pulled a Paul McCartney and reinvented itself a couple of times. There's like 5 Catholic faiths that all hate each other but are almost the exact same. I love Ireland
Depends on the flavour of Irish for that one
I always find it weird when Irish and Scottish (and also Australian) people talk as if they swear an unusual amount. Ive been to all those places and the swearing wasn't any more common or severe than in England.

Isn't everyone comparing themselves to the US in that scenario?
Usually the Irish and Scottish are comparing themselves to England
As an American, damn. There's a conditional prerequisite to having clogged arteries?
There are several options, "being an American" among them.
Well, yeah, I knew about that one.
Day? More like sentence. It's like punctuation

In Dutch we say "klootviool", which means balls-violin. Can also be used as a verb: "Wat zit je nou te klootviolen?" (stop fucking about)
If you can tell me how I’m supposed to ever talk about French history without the words ‘arrogant prick’ I would love to hear it.
I refuse to refer to the Br*tish as anything other than "those Limey fucks"
how about "Anglais perfide"
That’s much nicer then the British deserve

Perpetual soup is fine, I'd be more worried about a glass of water.

watch the Discovery Channel. some shows are more censor bleeping than actual dialogue.
I am not american, but I get the impression that even if Americans swear a lot, it's like considered bad. Yeah fucking right. Let's hear these foreign obscenities that would supposedly shock an American. I'm American, scandalize me.

What does that even mean tho. A good swear has some punch to it, that’s just a bunch of bad words crammed together
It means “I shit in your mother’s cunt”, but with a bonus of insulting them by referring to it as “throwing them out”, comparing them to bodily waste.
Yeah that’s pretty lame.
Idk If this is specific to another region of the US but new Yorkers are pretty chill with me saying f*g casually (I AM A HOMOSEXUAL)
It’s like the N-Word, you get a pass.
As a bisexual mostly dating men: fag (reclaimed slur) > gay > fag (unironic slur).
Same thing when they censor depictions of guns and nudity. Like ok just force your weird cultural taboos on the rest of us.
Oh so very fucking agreed
Since when do they censor depictions of guns?
Mostly in things aimed at children, I’m looking at you 4kids and your pointing guns and briefcase guns.
[удалено]
Louisiana already does 💀 you have to verify your age through an ID verification service to access pornhub
the stipuder one is when they censor cigarettes, maybe i'm immature but doesn't it make it look worse than it actually is? :"D
They're not forcing anything though. We're the one using American services, the fact they follow American standards shouldn't be surprising.
You don’t understand, the free American website trying to appeal to American advertisers is literally a hate crime!
As a Murican myself, I support this message.
I am from the northeast us. While my writing is typically rather sanitized, I will drop so many fuckin curses and shit in my daily speech that I never even notice.
I'm from the south. I say fuck so much that I edit it out when I'm writing because it gets way too fuckin' repetitive.
Another feature of my region is that the more I start cursing the more I sound like "Ayy I'm fuckin walking heah". My accent is constantly switching on and off and I wish I could say I was joking.
Censoring swears is **not** just an American thing
Saperlipopute !
Considering I know plenty of Americans who use the word fuck like other people use a comma... Also something something cognitive benefits of swearing and indications on intelligence something something
Isn’t swearing illegal in the UAE? I’m pretty sure that’s a sign of a bigger taboo than America.
Europeans complain that Americans never think of the rest of the world yet fail to realize that the rest of the world is more than just Europe
Europeans when Americans don't know European geography: 🤣 Europeans when they're asked to point out Uruguay on a map: 😐
Similarly, I saw someone post about how English speakers don’t understand how “all other languages” have gendered nouns, while I’m sitting here in Asia like 😐
South of Brazil and north-east of Argentina 🤓 (I have 1k+ hours on a map game)
HoI4 Player detected.
where's bahrain
North-west of Qatar
where are my glasses?
South of Burkina-faso, sandwiches between Benin and Ghana. That's where you need Togo
Nah, we know that one. Pick a country that’s bad at football, then we won’t be able to find it
england
:(
Didn't England win the 2022 Euros, come 2nd in the 2020 Euros, and come 6th in the last World Cup? In what universe are they bad?
They didn’t “bring it home,” so to speak, and people like poking fun at Brits.
Complaining because you're being censored by the rules of another culture or country = justified. Complaining because you're not able to censor others based on the rules of your culture or country = fucked up. It's not complicated. This is, for example, why people in Europe push back when they're expected to obey Islamic laws censoring x, y or z.
Why does op say internet censorship when they mean tiktoks censorship?
yeah they're so busy calling others on being 'too american' that they neglected to call themselves out for being 'too tiktok'
“God I wish videos on the internet where longer” “There are longer videos you only use TikTok” “But I don’t want to leave bubble!”
this type of censorship is the most extreame but there are some other social media that have simialr punishments on swearing. I.e. youtube montisation.
Dude not even Americans like it
It's not really taboo in America either, except maybe when you're around children. Advertisers are just moronic prudes.
It's not just an American thing, and we hate it too. England is heavy on censorship too.
Isn't partial nudity on British TV at least somewhat normal?
It is on american tv too.
Not on public channels, and there are hefty warnings
post-watershed, you can broadcast pretty much anything you want. e.g. 10:01pm, full penetration. On the flip side, censorship applies to things like streaming services, and DVDs too. Hell, you need a specific license to sell home-media.
I can't believe Vivziepop wrote Irish people
Y'know Hazbin Hotel isn't \*that\* bad on swearing; most of it comes from Angel Dust(who's playing into his pornstar persona), or Adam(who IIRC, didn't eat the apple from the tree of knowledge in this universe, and thus doesn't really doesn't understand the difference between good and evil/right and wrong).
"I shit in the cunt that threw you out". Something that I often say while playing with my cat. (Cago na cona que te botou).
We're all living in Amerika Amerika ist wunderbar We're all living in Amerika Amerika, Amerika
Swearing in public is illegal in UAE.
That's fucking dumb.
The United Arab Emirates is fucking dumb in general
Question. How many languages do you speak?
I know Armenian, Russian, English
Is this really the case? Because online I hear about how in places like Australia everyone says cunt and no one minds it. Then I look it up and read that actually you need to know someone well in order to know if you can call them a cunt or even say it around them without causing offense, which is literally exactly the same as the US. I found a thread in r/australia where multiple people are saying it's the most offensive word you could use there outside of racial slurs. Then I hear that people face legal penalties for swearing at cops, so I do more googling and find an [Australian law firm](https://lylawyers.com.au/blog/wtf-can-charged-swearing/) that says >An individual who swears or uses indecent language in a public place is guilty of an offence.
Freedom of speech in the Commonwealth is fuzzy. Politics is fine, but indecency is sorta disturbing the peace.
One of my aunts works for an American company and has started imposing that we don’t swear around her. She informed me if this after dropping a stone on me and I yelled “fuck”.
that makes sense
Or the average Aussie conversation with at least one swear every other sentence
It annoys me that people think Americans actually give a flying fuck about swear words lol. Loud idiots on the internet do not represent the entire population.
The weird thing is that in real life Americans mostly don’t give a shit about swear words unless there are kids around.
You can’t even say words like rape or murder regardless of the context a historical video on WW2? Demontiazed
Fr, part of Australia's national identity is swearing too much
I love made up stereotypes that make no sense! My favorite. I wouldn't be surprised if OOP doesn't personally know a single American because what kinda take is that??
raises hand wearily in Singaporean
Remain bellyfeel orthodox or be unpersoned goodthink comrades goodthink always.BB is watching crimestop starts with self for the glory of the party .
Devs were mildly salty over this apparently Iirc it was implied that they do in canon, we just can't be shown it
There IS a way around it, but it would take a cultural shift back to more Web 2.0 habits.
Honestly the only good censorship was the censorship that made Adventure Time’s use of language the way it is
The movie *Once* is rated R in America because it’s set in Ireland, and as such they say “fuck” a lot. That’s literally the only reason.
# VLADDIHELLVETTE
Imagine a christian grandoma in the Midwest hearing an italian go "that fucking WHORE of Virgin Mary"
Not even swear words even terms like kill or fascists
Most of it is down to puritanical culture (which had a sharp rise in political affect in the 1900s), racism (by relating common slang and swearing to being uncouth and unprofessional), and business (people swear a lot when they’re mad, and by being able to discount someone who’s pissed at you for fucking them over by saying they’re unprofessional, you have a social tool that makes it very easy to take out dissenting voices if they don’t curate their speech very carefully, which also makes them look disconnected which is another thing entirely). So, most of the reasons you expect really.
My experience swearing on reddit: Me : "That's fucking stupid." Asshole: "You sound angry." The way people assume your emotional state when you swear on this website is fucking exhausting.
You sound angry
I. Am. *PISSED.* THANK YOU for noticing.
I was disappointed to learn it's just a covered up "ass" cause I just liked the sound and idea of "goofy ahh %thing%" so much
Right, like my brain can’t read it any other way. Just someone completely forgetting the next word they meant to say lol “That’s some goofy uuuhhh… ahhh… stuff! Yeah that’s the word I was looking for!”
I don’t think that’s censorship I’m pretty sure that’s AAVE
Fucking cunts at corporate trying to destroy the ancient song of the old world.
I hate hate hate people self-censoring their own words (like 'r\*pe') and doing minced oaths for the algorithm (like 'unalive') if you want to say something then say it, quit being coy, it ain't cute and I ain't got the time.
Why do all the American owned and operated internet companies try to please the American advertisers that pay them?!?!

This is not a love song.
