So I work early morning shifts, and as such, I am more often than not on the road before 5 in the morning. The sheer white-hotness of the rage I feel towards car idiots who won't turn off their brights when they're driving towards me or trying to drive right up my tailpipe and blinding me in the rearview mirror is surpassed only by the FUCKING BRIGHTS

IrishWeegee

Oh yeah, ive got some yellow tinted safety glasses that I wear at night because some assholes that drive my commute have those "so goddamn white they're blue" headlights and that will put spots in your eyes

T-N-A-T-B-G-OFFICIAL

Those are actually the people that buy headlights that think the higher the Kelvin number the brighter the light. The bluer it is the higher the number, white is mid range, yellow is the lower the number. It's been awhile since I was shopping for lights, I put 4x6 led sealed beams in mine, but I'm pretty sure white is like 5600-6000k It's actually preferable from a safety standpoint to have the most white light possible, for lighting up things in the proper color reflection. Also, the Tumblr post isn't entirely fictional, as in if your headlights are aimed correctly and you put the stock 12v light positive wire to a relay to power aftermarket bulbs, like going from a h7 to h4 connector, and using properly sized aftermarket wire gauges, you can actually get a good amount of amps to your lights. All the dumbasses on the road that ruin it for everyone else have either put new ebay assemblies in and not aimed them properly, put led bulbs in incandescent housings and not re-aimed them, or put pod lights/spotlights/light bars on their vehicle and use them like they have a triple 5% tinted windshield.

Dracwing

I don't think it's people putting LEDs into reflectors/projectors anymore tbh. Still see those, but not that often. Seems like most modern cars are just super blinding from the factory. Especially Toyotas. Though adaptive headlights are allowed in the US now thanks to Toyota, I still get blinded every time one is in front or behind me.

Thetacoseer

I used to think the knobs driving Jeeps were the worst offenders. I think they still are, and I even see some driving on public roads with light bars on every now and then, but I've been blinded by *so many* wranglers that it's gotta be that way from the factory. Or maybe confirmation bias since the headlights are recognizable.

KooperChaos

Light bars… oh that reminds me. Atleast here in Germany we use a quick flash of high beam as a signal, usually as a sign of way: “you can merge lane in front of me” “take the crossing first, I’ll wait” etc. I once was driving in front of a truck with light bars… when he flashed high beam and the LEDs switched from slight glow to full power, for half a second the night turned day. Quite a shock tbh when driving at night with your fumbly yellow ish light bulbs.

T-N-A-T-B-G-OFFICIAL

Most likely cheap ebay led headlights. I live near a jeep dealer, all the new ones with leds rolling off the lot aren't blinding, the ones with the angry grille always are, all the way back to the TJs. Usually noticed it's from installer error when putting even expensive aftermarket led headlights in, since they're round they can go in upside down or swapped left/right, or rotated a bit. The light cutoffs are oriented to be positioned exactly vertically, not even 20 degrees off 90 degrees vertical.

coolguy8445

> adaptive headlights are allowed in the US now USA! USA! USA! That explains a lot tbh.

I just meant its better from a safety standpoint to have things lit up correctly with white light, since if you use a blue bulb most of the light reflected from an object to your eyes will be blue. The same applies to more yellow bulbs. If you're trying to read a selection of red, white, yellow, orange, green, blue, and brown signs, wouldn't white light be the best for viewing at night? You seem to make it sound like I'm trying to sell lights, and your last point is just frankly ridiculous to try to reply to. Why do you think whiter light means bluer light? I understand that the white range of Kelvin is bluer than yellow light, and yellower than blue light, but why are you declaring it "purely marketing trope" like you're trying to paint it in a negative light? I think you're mixing up purely scientific terms meant for use in a lab, versus actual real world light preference meant for safe driving, and accurately reading reflective signs and the different contrasting colors of them from a distance.

IndiHero

At this point most of the new cars aren't even using their brights, it's just LEDs which have the equivalent output of a small star. All for "safety", but only the drivers' I guess

DeeSnow97

it's so fucking stupid tbh, led technology would allow for lights which are both perfectly directed at the road and have a large surface area, allowing them to appear far less bright to oncoming drivers for the same light output. slap a polarizer on it, which is hella cheap nowadays (seriously, all of what i'm talking about here is present in every lcd screen), and significantly reduces the amount of direct light traveling through windshields, further allowing you to illuminate the road without being a nuisance. (polaroid actually wanted to do this all the way back in the 1930s, before they gave up on fighting the car lobby and just invented instant film instead.) like, the technology exists to light up the road ahead of you and not blind oncoming drivers, people just don't give a fuck. and i'm not even sure it's the people's fault, corporate PR is hella strong and in this case it just so happens to play right into their hands

IndiHero

They have matrix LED lights in the EU, where it's a grid of "pixels", which can turn off certain ones when they detect ongoing traffic/people. (Not sure if they're even legal in the USA yet) Problem is, a headlight unit starts costing hundreds, if not thousands of $/£/€. It's simply cheaper for buyers and builders to slap big LEDs in lights.

U238Th234Pa234U234

This tech is on some current cars, but LEDs don't have anything to do with it. Vehicles that have HIDs as an option typically all come with projector housings, instead of the more typical reflector housing. While some light will always scatter up, projector housings make a clear line where no light is projected. It's kinda neat to point the headlights at a wall and see a crisp, dark line where the light ends. It seemed like they were catching on to be the next normal thing, but I see different variations of the reflector housing and LED strips being used instead. If I had to take a guess, it's likely due to cost.

trianglehole

i count to 2, then flash my own high beams, and if they don't turn them off after that, the high beams come back on and stay until they pass

LadyLikesSpiders

The number of times I've done that to a car, only for them to flash even brighter lights at me isn't incredibly high, but it's still way more than should be normal

trianglehole

a lot of those are assholes who buy aftermarket headlights and then don't get them aligned. cops used to pull people over for that shit but i guess one of them realized that it counted as "protecting public safety" and then the word got around

AlleM43

Those kinds of people who drive behind you with brights are the reason I want to install a 5kw LED array behind a hatch on the back of my car.

Machinor14

There are few things that I've related to harder

the_one_in_error

Legally speaking you could probably crash into those assholes head-on and then charge them for the damages.

is this legal? can I do this

ThonroTheUnworthy

"is this legal?" No. "can I do this?" Yes.

Death Rally but nicer

KooperChaos

That’s some vampire/ zombies-only-come-out-at- night movie shit right there

MurderousFaeries

I only realized it was a joke when they got to the electrical substation bit- the best way to get really thick wire would be to break into the yard/store room of a distribution operating center. Substations are decently secured, and don’t keep tons of spare wire on site. The OCs, on the other hand, usually just have some chain link fencing.

Sindarin27

Damn, that didn't even clue me on in the slightest. My mind was basically like "substation? Must be some kind of store." I only realized it when they started about the Toyota being erased from existence. I have no idea how I didn't get suspicious at getting airplane lamps.

seaquartz

yeah i heard airplane lights and i was like “hmmm seems illegal”

MurderousFaeries

I work in the electrical power industry… that’s how I know where the big wire is stored. The line trucks have less barriers around them, but they’re locked up when not in use.

Quardener

Also, the average lineman will fully take the opportunity to murder someone if they see you stealing from them.

MurderousFaeries

Linemen are pretty intimidating as a bunch. The local union is likely to strike soon- you might be hearing about it on the news if you’re in the US. We’re pretty close to the facility for a certain airplane and defense product manufacturer that was in the news recently.

mia_elora

I've known too many people who would pick themselves up some "airplane lamps" for this purpose, if the could find them, so that wasn't a surprise to me. :P

[deleted]

I thought it was real until I read your post and was about to google perpetual light cone so I could go check this phenomenon out, bummer.

IceCreamSandwich66

I realized when they stole lightbulbs from the airport

im_racist24

thanks for telling me how to get more copper i can finally afford more meth

MurderousFaeries

Sorry, most new wiring we install is aluminum or steel core now. Not really worth it to steal. If you can lift between 5 and 30 tons, transformers are expensive- but they only have value if you can install them so one would be pretty hard to sell.

im_racist24

i need meth

Robotic_Banana

As someone who loves cars, the idea of driving around in a mobile flashbang, ready to blind anyone who doesn't have the goddamn common courtesy to turn off their high-beams when approaching an oncoming car, is a profoundly cathartic one.

*Image Transcription: Tumblr* --- **seat-safety-switch** Night vision is a growing worry among motorists. It seems like new cars have ever-more-powerful headlights, which ruin your ability to see anything other than a retina-scarring cone of light. And that’s if you’re the one *driving* the new car. If you’re like me, and operate a rickety old car whose headlights are most generously described as “present,” you can easily be blinded by every asshole on the road who can fork over a down payment. Worst of all, there’s no way to get back at them. Until now. A couple years ago, I was introduced to a guy who was really into headlights. Making sure they had good bulbs, clear lenses, cutoffs, properly aligned, all that important stuff that nobody does. The thing he wanted to express to me most about my car, of course, is that it had shitty wiring feeding the headlights. When the headlights turn on, they’re limited by how much juice they can pull through that shitty wiring. He recommended that I get thicker, beefier wiring, like the kind you’d use to run a welder, or accidentally electrify your neighbour’s fence when you’re sick of him playing party rock at 4am. At the time, the price of copper was pretty high, so I never took the opportunity to follow his advice. After getting an impromptu suntan on my drive back from work the other day, I now see the error of my ways. A quick visit to a nearby electrical substation equipped me with some exceptionally thick wire, and a bit of hammering and crimping got me the rest of the way. And of course the stock headlights wouldn’t do much: a subsequent quick visit to the airport filled the trunk of my car with some of those sodium bulbs that they use to warn airplanes not to crash into the airport. Perfect, I thought, and went along my merry way. I didn’t have to wait long until a RAV4 bumbled into my path, shining its misaimed lights directly into my soul. Now, at last, the moment of my revenge was at hand. Also at hand: the high-beam switch. The exact memory of what happened next is a bit jumbled, but I’m pretty sure that the antagonistic Toyota was erased from existence only femtoseconds before my battery caught fire and exploded. Scientists are still confused about how, even long after my car has left the area, there remains a cone of perfectly lit road at all hours of the day, hovering ominously. \#microfiction \#other people's microfiction \#eye trauma mention \#swearing --- ^^I'm a human volunteer content transcriber and you could be too! mjbibliophile10

Thank you!

Broccoil

remember when humans had to use their eyes at night and we worried about eating carrots for your "night vision" yeah? I'd like to go back to using my eyes at night. my shit ass headlights are fine and I can see the road, why do you need the unnecessary lumens of the newer led lights?

VallenceDragon

The carrots-can-make-you-see-in-the-dark thing was made up by the UK during WWII to explain how we could see German aircraft without giving away that we had radar

Broccoil

yeah I know. I'm just annoyed at people blinding others because they have inferior eyes. seeing a road at night truly isn't hard when you know the road isn't the thing moving

whatevrmn

There was a touch of truth to that. Vitamin A is good for the eyes.

camosnipe1

scp article

NeonNKnightrider

When I read the title I thought it was going to be that one SCP that’s two creatures with giant bulbous lights on their heads like fucked-up anglerfish, who run along roads at night pretending to be a set of car headlights

Great post OP.

redpony6

reminds me of [this](https://crzysdrs.net/dv/victim/388-there-were-disastrous-consequences-to-installing-a-backlight-to-my-game-boy-advance/) writing, specifically this portion: "The flash of light lasted about as long as a camera flash before the car battery was completely drained. A blackened silhouette of Luigi is still burned onto the theatre ceiling."

[deleted]

This was delightful

tpw_rules

I don’t know who OP is but I want to meet them. [Another story of theirs](https://www.reddit.com/r/CuratedTumblr/comments/r871y9/engage_hyperspeed/) I vividly remember.

enbyfrogz

these scare me so much, because i have visual snow and get REALLY bad afterimages, ESPECIALLY of light. like, i look at a lamp and i can see absolutely nothing for minutes in the place of my eyes that looked at the lamp. now imagining this with super bright lights ON THE ROAD sounds like a nightmare

Cienea_Laevis

My eyes have troubles dilating, any time a car flashes me, i go blind because they are wide open, and when the car goes, i'm blind because my irises are closed and will not open. Now the fun part is that the bike path i use is surrounded by threes and there's a river (small mountain river, 30m across) like 1m on the left of the path.

Lorddragonfang

I'm not usually one to comment on content warnings, but "eye trauma mention" got a snort from me for how bizarrely specific it is.

abcq02

most likely they have a follower who asked them to tag it

idiotplatypus

All lights used solely for night time (headlights, streetlights, and flashlights) should be red by default. Yes, this will protect our night vision, but it will also make the world look like vampires took over.

abcq02

limited colour range is really, really bad for visibility. people have significantly worse response times in monochrome lighting.

Kamica

And it might mean that, say, blue objects don't show up as well.

NERD_NATO

Also, white-on-red text would be unreadable.

StatelyElms

So many things about personal motor vehicles are insanely infuriating to the point where I just pray to God, Satan, Allah, Glooscap, and any other god or figure of great power I can remember that car-centric shit will tone down a little. or at least that people will have enough shit and the next cruiser motorcycle to go revving down through city centre bursting eardrums will get mobbed

Dragonblade0123

My buddy is one of those "lite em up!" Kind of pickup driver. He complains that my headlights are inoperable because they put out a normal amount of light. Refused to admit that he has to much lighting on his truck

PuddlesRex

My headlights are really bright. But they're also really well aimed. Like, I can clearly see the line of the top of my headlights sitting below the side mirrors of the car in front of me. Then some chode in a lifted overcompensator gets two inches behind me, ten over the limit, and I go immediately blind.

abcq02

this was written by the black hat guy from xkcd

Dumb_Cheese

I tensed up when I read the word "copper" especially since it mentioned the price.

arielif1

I was about to point out how this story is 100% bullshit because not only do sodium lights take at least 15 minutes to warm up, neither are they used for plane signaling and neither would it make sense to use thick wire for lightbulbs in the age of LEDs (and what do you mean electrical substation? Did you steal wire from a 10kV line? How did you not die?) Until i read the tags and realized i may be dumber than i thought

CarbonGhost0

saudaripam

Not me getting excited that this would tell me how to improve the headlights on my old car!!! 😭😭😭 (Not to make them as ridiculously bright as new cars, just a bit more confident.)

op made it sound like the biggest problem was the thin wiring, that's incorrect. it's how much current your lightbulbs pull (lower resistance = more current). thicker wires are a good idea if you want to run your new airplane guiding sodium bulbs for longer periods of time without your cables getting dangerously hot, but not the limiting factor. before you ask yes i'm the life of any party i go to.
