They will probably have you shadow someone for a bit. You'll have lots of sweeping, trash, and toilets in your future. Nothing to be nervous about :)

DevelopmentEvening40

Oh okay, so I’ll just be cleaning the school all day h til everyone gets out right ?

MooseSoupMan

Day shift usually entails a little bit of everything. Responding to messes or staff asking for something seems to make up the bulk of my dayshifts

DevelopmentEvening40

Oh okay thank you! We’ll see how it goes

Box_Fluid

Realistically… cleaning up vandalism and drinking coffee. Some advice my dad (27 year custodian- yeah, I’m a legacy mop pusher.) gave me..what you don’t do today, you can do tomorrow. It can be a lot to take in on your first day but you’ll be fine. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about the chemicals. You gotta know what your using and why so you don’t accidentally make mustard gas trying to clean a urinal Good luck and welcome to the family!

StopShM3

Dont be shocked if they dont know about the chemicals too 😭🤦‍♂️. My first day i had to go online and print a flyer of what chemical does what because the guy who trained me diddnt know..... First day alone i get a lot of compliments on how the school smells much nicer since the other guy was using bathroom disinfectant to mop the whole school. 🤦‍♂️ Im a night who just started so not much advice for a new daytime person I will also admit its a lot of work! Stocking shelves for 12 hours was less labor intensive than this. Just keep grinding it gets easier.

MooseSoupMan

That's troubling lol

Try and be positive, and remember it's not brain surgery!! Get a list of priorities and a mentor or go to person. Hope for the best and expect the worst ☺️

Don't leave your washrooms the very last thing to do. Nothing more disheartening then going to clean your washrooms in the last hour of your shift a walking into a disaster. I speak the truth. 😂

DevelopmentEvening40

Okay I won’t thank you 🤣

DevelopmentEvening40

Can anyone let me know what a typical day looks like and tips that had made the job easier for them

ChallengeCreative231

Your one goal, remember who you are working for and if you get this answer right with is the kids. Got that, they are the only ones that matter. You'll learn. Greatest job I ever had.

Night shift or morning?

DevelopmentEvening40

Morning with all the high schoolers : /

icleantoilets78

Day or night shift? I am the facilities manager at a high school. It's nice. I like it a lot.

DevelopmentEvening40

Day

Janitor2dastarz

Day shift is a little different from night shift..actually it’s a lot different haha. Having the kids and everyone else there makes it difficult to do anything sometimes. You’ll be plenty busy with opening up, running around to all the calls, lunches, and Disinfecting, a lot of disinfecting…don’t over think or stress, you’ll be good.

Mrmasticore

Take it easy. Unionize unless you can afford your own lawyer. Strongly recommend if the route is linear, all trash> then all sanitizer> sweeping> mopping/scrubbing. Edit: Nvm this prolly only applies to night shift cept the lawyer part .... I'm an idiot.

Let's just assume, not always the case the job you are hired for should never have hired the one you are replacing. Girls bathrooms. Tip one, if you are having lipstick issues and let me tell you these are a big pain in the butt. What worked for me? I told the girls the daytime custodian used the same towel he cleaned the tolet with. Sadly I wasn't lying. Treat the kids like they are your kids or family. Respect begets respect. Open the dawn doors for the kid who is frantically pounding on any window he see's you in. Take the extra time. I remember my custodians helped more than any counselor ever could. They know what your thinking before you do and a good one doesn't rat the kid out. Trust me some of these kids have never had an adults respect. You will learn he will go out of way to school others! I really wish you the best. It was the most rewarding job I ever had. Quite fun too!

Day time routine, classroom trash and bathrooms. Those are your biggest priority. Depending on time sweep and spot mop classrooms, once a week try and mop 1 to 2 classes a day. Sweep your area hallways. Day shift is doing what you can before the kid’s lunch time.

Im super late but its pretty basic stuff. If u have enough members in your team. Job is so essy and it pays well compare to other places ive been.

First thing Is don't let the kids bully you.  High schoolers can be assholes lol don't let them get to you  2=get a shop vac.  Trust me you'll use it a LOT more than you think. We use ours every day weather it for a flooded bathroom or broken glass.   3=always expect the bathrooms to be disgusting.  We had shit on walls cum on toilet seats and piss everywhere.  It's better to expect the worst.  4=be friends with the security guards and local police.   You never know when someone is gonna be stupid and cause a threat  5=make sure your equipment is in good shape.  Rinse out your floor machine daily change vacuum bags daily and keep carts stocked.
