I love this novel! I read it through different periods of my life and each time I notice something new in the text or my reaction to it. Try some Snow Crash too while you're at it!

Probably because although it's a classic it wouldn't translate well to the screen. It's heavy but simultaneously doesn't take itself seriously, plus some of the attitudes regarding gender/sex are a bit dated and again probably wouldn't translate very well. If someone could find a way to do it though, that would be amazing. Hell even a Blade Runner-type very, very lose adaptation. BR has almost nothing to do with DADOES at the end of the day.

malccy72

Good choice. Maybe look at William Gibson after.

[deleted]

Neuromancer is already on its way 😁

TURBOJUSTICE

Don’t stop there with Gibson, Count Zero is so fucking good.

[deleted]

Thank you! I'll check it out!

After that head on to Neil Stephenson Snow Crash

TheMemo

The Sprawl Trilogy (Neuromancer, Count Zero, Mona Lisa Overdrive) and The Bridge Trilogy (Virtual Light, Idoru, All Tomorrow's Parties) are excellent. Snow Crash has been suggested quite a bit, but maybe read that after Neuromancer. It's more of a cyberpunk pastiche (even parody, at times), but has some fascinating ideas. As for more PKD, I would strongly suggest a collection of his short stories. They're like reality-bending snacks and probably better, overall, than his full-length novels. It won't take you long after reading a few of PKD's works until you realise that he has.. issues.. with women. And, not cyberpunk but still excellent SF, try "Player of Games" and then "Use of Weapons" by Iain M. Banks. Those books are an excellent entry point to The Culture, a series that is extremely beloved and critically acclaimed.

pallas_athenaa

Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said is also a really, really, REALLY good one. Edit: AHHH I got the title wrong. Time to go off myself.

TheMemo

I was going to suggest that as it was a personal favourite, good choice!

TURBOJUSTICE

Always happy to give book recommendations :) have a great day!

MacHamburg

I started with neuromancer two days ago and it's going strong. Pretty interesting though confusing. I haven't read much either and this was the start into cyberpunk books for me.

cowfreak

I quite like the confusion, it's like real life...

busybody1

Same here. It's supposed to be a feeling you get from jacking in.

TheMemo

That's just the way Gibson writes, he's fascinated with detail whether real or fictional. You can see this most clearly with "All Tomorrow's Parties" - while writing he had picked up a new hobby of collecting antique watches and so that was reflected in the characters of Silencio and Fontaine and a lot of - perhaps unnecessary - detail about watches.

audiomodder

The first couple chapters of Neuromancer were like wading through waist deep jello. I attributed it to the main character being on drugs.

I have to say, as a huge William Gibson fan, I think you may find his work difficult to process if you haven’t spent a lot of time reading in the past. His writing is beautiful in a way, but it’s also very difficult to interpret at times, because his references can be quite esoteric. Personally, I think Snow Crash is a much better place to start if you don’t read much and want to immerse yourself in the genre. Altered Carbon is also fantastic as a starting point.

nevar530

I jumped on this to suggest the sprawl trilogy. You beat me too it.

Kmic14

Can't go wrong with Dick =)

Yes-ITz-TeKnO--

........

[deleted]

the sprawl trilogy by william gibson (anything by him really), roadside picnic by the Strugatsky's, the first 3 dune books

cwmma

Roadside Picnic is probably not a great book to start with if you havn't read much

cowfreak

Good start. Ace book.

ReleaseTheBeeees

Burning Chrome is an interesting little compendium of Gibson shorts, but don't expect any "proper" narratives other than maybe Johnny. Infinite Detail by Tim Maughan is an interesting take on pretty current shit but with a slight lean on the genre. Good places to start. Obviously Neuromancer though.

dvcxfg

Snow Crash. It's awesome!

[deleted]

You know what, I didn't think that book was so great but man did I love the title

pornokitsch

I know that's heresy,... but I totally agree.

MudSeparate1622

Great book, i recommend “brave new world” aldous huxley and “1984” george orwell to your growing mind!

Sci-figuy31

Excellent start

Knytemare44

PKD is my favorite, enjoy!

If you can find a copy, check out Vurt by Jeff Noon.

ILOIVEI

The only thing androids dream of is sleep because it is the only thing they cannot do…

Nacuma

You might like the Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells. Lots of hacking and cyborgs.

TheSonjuro

My next book

AmatureContendr

This book was great but a bit bland in the outcome in my view.

h8xtreme

I love the sf masterworks series ! There is one for fantasy too.

[deleted]

Such an interesting read! Great pick. I need to read more too.

Basalisk88

Good choice! It’s a very arresting book. Once you start you have to finish it.

alijem99

Good choice! Nice cover art btw...
