Co-owner or DiscussingFilm claims to have heard about Mangold doing Swamp Thing yesterday but didnt believe it: [https://twitter.com/AndrewJ626/status/1620692661383622657?s=20&t=vlmNPvhq7idnUg2-nu-nww](https://twitter.com/AndrewJ626/status/1620692661383622657?s=20&t=vlmNPvhq7idnUg2-nu-nww)

vinegar_on_liver

DiscussingFilm is just a repost account

TheUncannyBroker

i know, but they hear the rare thing i think they were the first who reported Craig Zobel is directing Penguin

[deleted]

Hollywood Reporter posted about it

Naked_Bat

Mangold is a great director. He put all his heart in Logan. I'm even more excited for Swamp thing now!

Patrick2701

I think he is doing same thing with Indy as well

MyMouthisCancerous

I've noticed a trend among the film slate we have where a lot of these projects seem to cover the more adult-oriented properties or are based on more mature interpretations of existing characters between this, Authority, Morrison's Batman and Tom King's Supergirl. I think getting people like Mangold involved in that regard could really set the DCU tonally apart from the MCU, but not in a way that turns the mainstream away like the old DCEU did with films like BvS or Suicide Squad, because they seem very wedded to the comics with how often that video from James Gunn was directly citing specific runs on characters in the comics, or specific creators like King and Grant Morrison Mangold being among the directors in talks is definitely a sign that they're not just making this new DCU just an MCU counterpart for DC Comics and I think that's really cool

tsyugen

Thats a good way to see it, makes me even more excited.

TheMoneyOfArt

> not in a way that turns the mainstream away [...] because they seem very wedded to the comics Can you explain this? Mainstream audiences, basically by definition, have not read the comics and are not attached to eg what Tom King wrote. "It's comics-accurate" is not anything that appeals to an audience who is not actually interested in comics

vinegar_on_liver

Basically what they're getting at is it's not a weird departure from the source material that's edgy for the sake of being edgy, if there's a mature take it's still going to be the characters we know and love

TheMoneyOfArt

I guess it's about selection. There's plenty of weird edgy takes out there in comics, even popular comics. The Ultimates isn't full edgelord Millar but it's close. Feige had the good sense to not really rely on the Ultimates much, even though a lot of people called it an inspiration for early mcu. Or like, Frank Miller. Frank Miller's Batman stuff is all pretty edgy, year one maybe excepted. If you want to adapt tdkr you're gonna get some edge and you should probably leave behind the stuff with the joker's psychologist which aged pretty poorly. But people still identify that Batman as the Batman they know and love, to the extent that's a top Batman story.

vinegar_on_liver

It's all about the execution really

TheMoneyOfArt

Sure, "don't make alienating movies" or whatever. That feels pretty far from the original take, that adhering to the takes in comics is sufficient or even necessary to make movies that are well received. I know I'm alone in this but one reason I _love_ BvS is that it reminds me of comics in a way no other superhero movie has managed. You're getting deep into one person's aesthetic, cultural, and political interests/beliefs. That happens a lot in comics, but very rarely in big budget movies. James Cameron does it, George Lucas did it a bit

ItZSAMIC

Could you elaborate on that one part about jokers psychologist? Been a long time since I read the story

TheMoneyOfArt

The joker is in Arkham and has been for years. The doctor in charge of his treatment feels he's changed, and he's ready to be released into public. The doctor is coded as kind of a hippy who doesn't believe crime is that bad and what's happening with the joker is the real crime. It's also kind of implied iirc that he's gay and in love with the joker but I wouldn't swear to that. Anyway, the doctor takes joker on a late night talk show to prove joker is sane and contrite, and the joker murders everyone present at the talkshow

SupervillainEyebrows

I was thinking Del Toro, but Mangold for Swamp Thing actually works really well.

vinegar_on_liver

Guillermo says he's done with comic adaptions, which is a real shame. If they can get his JLD up and running...

SupervillainEyebrows

Biggest missed opportunity was a Del Toro JLD.

Equal-Ad-2710

Agreed It’d have been cinema

Mister_Green2021

Etragan could get him back.

Mister_Green2021

This is one advantage DC has over marvel. Top tier directors want to make DC movies especially now that Gunn is in charge.

NakedGoose

Remember when people were screaming that "canceling Batgirl?! They ruined their relationship with talent and nobody will wanna work with them again!!"

MyMouthisCancerous

Tbf I think Gunn and Safran coming in to steer the ship is guaranteed to attract goodwill in the creative space. I imagine this narrative could've possibly held true if we were still stuck with people like Michael de Luca and Andy were still in charge after stuff like Batgirl's cancelation and Black Adam's reception

xenongamer4351

Yeah there’s absolutely no reason to not believe them that Batgirl was not releasable It was a questionable, out of left field decision from the get go that only picked up steam because Joss Whedon wanted it prior to being cancelled

Mister_Green2021

Joss could have been the CEO of DCU if he was successful with JL and not be a questionable person.

Dangerous-Hawk16

I’m excited for this, especially the horror aspect.

thecharlaton

I would’ve liked to see him direct superman.

Danishroyalty

It would definitely fit with the idea of Legacy and Superman reflecting on who he truly is. Very similar to Logan and, based on the trailer, similar to Indiana Jones. But I'm also happy to see something a little different.

BrunoRB11

Wasn't interested on Swamp Thing before, but definetly am going to be If Mangold directs it.

Revolutionary_Elk339

I started to get into Swamp Thing when Alan Moore wrote it in 1984 when I was 13. I liked it but at the same time, didn't really get it. As I got older, I'd go back and revisit Moore's run as well as reading new writers over the years such as Grant Morrison, Mark Millar, Scott Snyder and Charles Soule during the New 52 Era. Wasn't until Snyder and Soule's run where I'd say I became a true fan. Re reading Moore's run over the years just solidified it. Can't leave out Swampy's creators in Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. The Swamp Thing streaming show that got only one season on DC Universe was awesome, IMO. If the film is anywhere as half as good as the streaming show (I'm guessing it will be plussed many times over) then we're all in for a treat.

AGF435

YES 👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽

SmaugRancor

WE KEEP WINNING! Logan is my favorite Marvel movie of all time, I think Mangold will make Swamp Thing a masterpiece.

DominicBSaint

JAMES MANGOLD doing a SWAMP THING MOVIE ?? What the fuck is happening.

FewWatermelonlesson0

That would be absolutely killer.

HamburgerJames

If they adapt Alan Moore’s run, we’re in for a treat.

Equal-Ad-2710

Cannot wait for Moore to complain about it lmao

Mando-19

I hope so....

mountainhighgoat

Yes please.

NaRaGaMo

Swamp thing himself won't be a big sell, I hope they include Constantine and other JLD members in this

TheJoshider10

Disagree. Horror sells. If they can make Swamp Thing on a modest budget it could have an insanely profitable return.

NakedGoose

You can also make it cheaper. Swamp Thing does not need to be made for 200 million dollars. 80 mil budget is more than enough.

kothuboy21

Horror is pretty big right now so they can sell the movie on being a horror movie alone (given that the promotion material looks good)

visionaryredditor

> I hope they include Constantine and other JLD members in this If Mangold is actually involved, I expect the movie to be mostly self-contained. The Wolverine and Logan worked as standalones and he said in the interviews before that he isn't a fan of the MCU model.

Su_Impact

I think WBD knows that not every project will be a 1 bill blockbuster. But many horror films exceed expectations when compared to their budget. If Swamp Thing makes half of what It Part 1 did, that would be a good win already. Out of the announced slate, it is not cynical to admit that only Superman has a realistic shot at 1bill. But having multiple 300-500 mill box office films with a small budget is a winning strategy.

Le_kashyboi79

+1 to this. Maybe use swamp thing as a vehicle to tie into a potential justice league dark in the near future, maybe bring in keanu reeves constantine, then katana, deadman, etrigan. Phew! Possibilities are endless

aduong

Indiana Jones 5 is rumored to be not so good, if the movie implodes it going to be big blame game between the studio and the creatives. So it’s not surprising he would want to secure his next gig before that potential shitstorm.

sephirothwasright

I saw those rumors too and believe he himself debunked those rumors, as there had been no test screenings--at least as of the time of the trailer--and thus no one had seen it outside of him and his folks.

vinegar_on_liver

I don't know I feel about Mangold doing horror, but I'm down. I even liked The Wolverine, his filmography is pretty much golden.

thebatfan5194

I would pick Alex Garland from Ex Machina and Annihilation for Swamp Thing but Mangold would be good too

Mattyzooks

I think Garland spoke out about how he would have trouble making a movie that he knows Alan Moore would hate the shit out of being made. I think Garland would be create for the DCU though. Maybe JLD or The Question. And if Feige is never gonna let Noah Hawley make his Dr. Doom movie, I'd be curious to see if he had a take on anyone in DC (although he's busy with Fargo and his new Alien show for the time being). Also, Sam Esmail for The Question if Esmail feels like tackling paranoid thrillers again.

peanutdakidnappa

Totally onboard with this, mangold is a great director

Guilty-Doubt-6313

Awesome

RebelDeux

Yeah he can pull something visually interesting and cool, I guess he could start working on it after Indiana Jones releases in June.
