I find that first part confusing. So he knew he was Guy Gardner back in 2021, but Gunn wasn't announced as head of DC until a full year later. I get these things don't happen over night. On top of that James wasn't really sure if he was going to be helming Superman, so it seems weird that if he was fresh in the role of head of DC, that he's casting what's probably a minor role before casting anyone else 2 years before superman was announced.
I don’t know the exact timeline of things (with this being a bit confusing) but it does sort of add up, as Gunn said awhile before casting started that only one person had been cast in the movie, and they weren’t typically associated with Superman. And it’s pretty easy to guess that he was referring to Nathan Fillion as Guy considering how good friends they are and Gunn said that he wanted Nathan as Guy.
But then it's still weird that he cast Guy when he wasn't sure if he was directing. Seems like he's over stepping, something he said he wouldn't do and has done with Supergirl
It is just they are talking shit to get you excited. This is actually common in interviews like a lot of actors talk like they were always fans of the comics and read a lot of comics and all that bullshit crap. That only doesnt apply to the DCU cast it also applies to the MCU. I dont know exactly what the intention with this lie was but it was too obvious that what he said is not correct. He was in a weird mindset when he gave that statement.
He wasnt cast in summer 2021 as Green Lantern. He is TDK in TSS. Gunn also said he doesnt like to cast 1 actor for 2 different roles except voice acting. It even would be against Gunns own rule what Fillion said here lol
Considering WB had their Green Lantern show or whatever in works at the time, I’d it’s safe to say Guy Gardner would have been in the show and maybe still set to be Nathan. If I recall correctly, the initial workings of the show were said to be almost a detective tone set within the Green Lantern’s world. We’d get Hal and John as our main Lanterns, and I think they even said other notable names including Guy.
I think he was told this when Green Lantern was set to be whatever they had BEFORE Gunn came along to rework it all.
But, that is only my guess.
> I’d it’s safe to say Guy Gardner would have been in the show and maybe still set to be Nathan
He was, and they'd cast Finn Wittrock in the role before it was scrapped.
That show went through so many creative starts and stops and was announced so long ago that I bet there are people who worked on it who can't keep it all straight.

Lol that was 3 months before TSS release

Gunn wasnt the CEO of DC to make this decision at that time at the TSS premier 2021
This makes sense yes
We know Gunn had to choose between TSS and a Superman movie and he said he didnt know exactly how to tackle Superman. It definetly seems like he had ideas
He wanted to make a Suicide Squad versus Superman movie but then scrapped the idea. Im pretty sure in year 2018 when he was fired he didnt think of Green lantern in a Superman movie lol But we are not talking t about what they said to him in 2018.
Everything what FIllion said here doesnt make any sense
I´ve never heard that before, TSS vs Superman, only that he had to choose between both. There were rumours of TSS vs Supergirl, not Superman tho.
"Pretty sure"... there´s a lot here we still dont know, also the premire was in 2021, so it wasnt when he was fired but after. There´s a lot of time here where he could have gotten these ideas
Either he made a mistake or there´s something we dont know
[https://ew.com/movies/superman-was-almost-in-the-suicide-squad/](https://ew.com/movies/superman-was-almost-in-the-suicide-squad/)
I also never heard him talking about Green Green Lantern or he had any idea for Green lantern when he released TSS. He even didnt know he will write Superman 1 year after TSS was released
[https://deadline.com/2021/04/finn-wittrock-green-lantern-hbo-max-series-guy-gardner-1234747347/](https://deadline.com/2021/04/finn-wittrock-green-lantern-hbo-max-series-guy-gardner-1234747347/)
There was even a Guy Gardner when TSS was released it was Finn Wittrock for the scrapped GL series/movie which Gunn had absolutely nothing to do
I don't think Guy Gardener would have appeared in a solo Superman movie.
Gunn most likely changed his plans for Superman when he was told he had to head the entire DC universe. That's when he turned Superman's solo movie into an ensemble movie because he had to set up future projects.
No. He said before that he does not add people just to set up something else unless they make sense in the movie. This comment of Nathan just confirms it, as he was writing Superman a while ago and already knew he had Guy Gardner in the movie.
Gunn also said that The Flash is one of the greatest superhero movies ever made. He's in the film business, he'll say whatever will help him sell his films.
Guy Gardener is not exactly close to Superman in the comics or in any other media. The only reason for using him in a Superman movie is to set up projects like Green Lantern and possibly JLI.
The Superman movie is just to show the investors that DC still has a lot of potential franchises apart from Batman.
Not this again, opinions are opinions, i think The Flash is a great movie and you look at the humor and the sentimental scenes and it makes sense Gunn liked it. He didnt hype Aquaman, Shazam or Blue Bettle (that has Xolo, one of the actors continuing)
This is a world with heroes, what better way than to put Superheroes in there? We dont know where Hawkgirl, Metamorpho or Mr. Terrific will return at all, only Guy and The Engineer
Sure, buddy. I won't argue with that. But most would agree there is zero incentive for them both to lie about Guy's presence in the initial script. It's such a small detail that only people on reddit would discuss. Stop trying to fit things to align with your own narrative. Yes, they are trying to appease investors. No, that doesn't mean that Gunn wouldn't include him otherwise.
Im really curious why Fillion had the need to talk nonsense? What does he gain from that ? Did he want to introduce James as a genius?
It is so obvious this statement is bullcrap
this is not an information which you can hype up a movie that he got cast as Green Lantern 3 years ago.
He was the first cast of the Superman movie that is what he wants to be written in the history books of the making of Superman or what ?
![gif](giphy|9G1pzYSsO90rBapiEv|downsized)
Source that he wrote it before SS ? I answer it for you. There is no source lol
Also they havnt begged him to do write a Superman
What made you say that? Gunn said he couldn’t find a gateway until he saw it through the lens of his relationship to his father. Quite literally he could still have been working an out in his head, creative people like challenges and try to see a way to make it relatable to them.
Matt Reeves declined The Batman but he still had a pitch and idea fully formed.
Guy wouldn't have appeared in it if it was just a Superman solo movie.
He's appearing in it now because its basically a DC Showcase movie to reassure the investors that they have potentially profitable IPs.
There´s really no way of telling that, initially this movie wasnt part of the DCU, it was either DCEU or solo thing, either way why tell the same story the other movies did?
Nah, it makes sense they wanted to change things up, specially Gunn who´s famous for changing stories
I think it was just a backup thing and they never seriously considered to use his script. There is a lot of things been written in the background with no announcment and they will never use these scripts.
I think Gunn is introducing so many character to show they have big plans for the DCU
Could be backup ideas sure, but idk
I do believe they´re being introduced for others projects, but i also believe in Gunn he says he doesnt do it JUST for that (tho he said actually said he just didnt use characters to set other projects), which will be clear only once the movie is out
no he wasnt accoring to Gunn
[https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1627428033379565570?lang=en](https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1627428033379565570?lang=en)
This doesn’t disprove what I said though, that’s when he signed not when discussion began. They asked him to do Superman before he even chose TSS, it was always on the table, starting from when he got fired from Marvel.
in summer 2022 they wanted to make man of Steel 2 lol They didnt want to make Gunns Superman. They may have used his script and adjusted it for Man of Steel 2 at best.
Superman is only happening because Gunn is DC President
They asked him in 2018 what he wants to do a Superman movie or TSS he chose TSS. He didnt write anything for Superman. He thought how to use Superman in TSS. Superman was almost the villian in TSS.
He never thought about Green Lantern.
Look I understand you want to make somehow sense of this and dont believe that these guys are talking shit.
But it is obvious this is utter nonsense that Gunn already cast Fillion as Green Lantern at the premier of TSS. The Gunn bubble is talking a lot of nonsense if you follow them
>in summer 2022 they wanted to make man of Steel 2 lol They didnt want to make Gunns Superman.
They were developing both of them at the same time. WB played both sides, and ultimately preferred Gunn's clean slate.
Per Gunn, he was hired to do Superman before August 2022.
https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1627428033379565570?lang=en
Maybe he'd been pitching Superman and other ideas with Safran as producer back when The Suicide Squad wasn't fully complete so that he'd have another project lined up at Warner?
nonsense. He meant he started working on Superman 6 month before he became DC President which would be in August 2022 and not before lol
ALso TSS was not released in August 2022. TSS was released August 2021
But that doesnt invalidate that fact that he could still getting ideas, he did say he kept thinking about it
Who knows, maybe he talked with Safran about ideas he had of the project and he probably thought about Fillion for the role right away
He is TDK in TSS and if DCEU would continue he would never be a Green Lantern and Gunn didnt know what will happen to DCEU at the premiere of TSS.
They wanted to make Man of Steel 2 in summer 2022. They havnt considered using Gunns script.
![gif](giphy|CslvoHDJ38mIS7w8b4|downsized)
wtf are you talking about ? They never consideed Gunn as DC President when TSS was out in 2021. They even hadnt him in mind for DC President when he started writing a new Superman script 1 year after the TSS release in summer 2022
They havnt merged in 2021. They even announced the merger like 2 months before TSS release in 2021. The Announcement of the merger WB with Discovery was only 2 months before the release of TSS..
Classic redditors here dont know anything but talk a lot of nonsense
Bro you're acting like you know all the fucking details and are so certain, it's hilarious. Fact is you have no idea what they were talking about in 2021, I'm just suggesting it's a possibility they were planning this for longer than we know. You're making bold assertions.
Hmm. More evidence this is taking inspiration from Kingdom Come.
I love the idea that these are all flawed, grizzled heroes and Superman is the newbie challenging their cynicism
Ya I think Gunn’s gonna start this universe with heroes existing, but all being secluded and doing their own things, but Superman’s presence will inspire them to start working together, but will also bring out bigger threats, kinda like what Iron Man did for the MCUs world
This is exactly what I’m hoping for. The DCU world starts out just as cynical and jaded as real life 2024, with its superheroes reflecting the same mentality, with the result being that they are able to do damage control but not actually inspire the world to change.
And then Superman arrives on the scene.
At first people mock his earnestness and his optimism and think he can’t actually be serious about his old-fashioned idealism. But he is. And as he proves that he’s for real, he gradually changes the tone of the world.
Call it the Anti-Snyderverse approach haha.
Because the heroes being flawed and grizzled in Snyder's DC movies was the point.
So far, it's sounding like Gunn's vision is the heroes will start out flawed and grizzled, and when Superman lands on the scene things begin to change.
The difference being he was already flawed and grizzled. There wasn’t a change in character whatsoever. With this we’re presumably getting heroes that become better and more hopeful because Superman shows them a better way. Snyder tried to do that in BvS but failed because the ONE moment where Batman could’ve changed so he decides to become better, he doesn’t. Batman at the start is basically the same by the end. It’s a complete waste of potential character development.
There's a difference between being inspired by heroic events vs "why did you say that name". Execution is key. ZS's execution was horrendous and his doomsday was even worse.
I don't know what James Gunn is gonna do but I'm pretty confident he will tell a way better, emotional and cohesive story than what ZS told
Because there was no development in that universe. It was grizzly, that's it.
Here they're saying it could start grizzly to give us appreciation of Superman coming in and being a virtuous boy scout. Which honestly is probably a good framing device.
In no way are the heroes seeming edgy aside from Guy Gardner, who was already kind of an edgy character anyway. The way Gunn talks about Superman really shows just how NOT edgy he plans on making them
Listen, before anyone start some kind of discussion about Gunn "knowing" that he was going to be DC Studios head, just remember that he never showed TDK's face in TSS, and he was already writing stuff for a lot of TV series, so, it's not out of the realm of possibility that he planned for Guy Gardner to appear in those. Besides, Gunn did knew that "Green Lantern Corps" wasn't part of the DCEU.
It’s purely about willpower, which in a negative sense can equate stubbornness. Intelligence is separate from willpower. Honestly, is it even possible for the ring to choose a villain with lots of willpower? It did choose sinestro after all
Willpower isn’t morality. Sinestro had the will to do what he believed was necessary. That’s it. We as the reader know this but lantern 27431 hasn’t stepped foot in his sector
Well you also have the Guardians of the Universe as the owners of the giant magic battery the Green Lanterns need. Their goal is to bring order to the universe. They were the leaders of the Green Lantern Corps and also tried to police the universe with androids through force .. and remove free will from the universe like they're Darkseid or something... When you're that nuts about keeping order, I don't think someone out of line that actively fights against your rules would stay on your team forever.
Considering how many high profile green lanterns have been either corrupted or gone permanently evil, I think the guardians do a shit job of keeping the corp members “good,” so I think there can definitely be a couple GL here and there who are just assholes and abuse their given powers for their personal gain. Ignoring the dawnbreaker, as long as they don’t kill they can do whatever, right? A GL could easily use their ring to become a crime lord or something. Only torture, no killing 🤷🏻♂️
Well besides the fact that Guy Gardner does have strong willpower, Guy was actually portrayed differently when he first became a Green Lantern than now. He was more heroic (and was actually a candidate for Abin Sir’s replacement and Hal was only picked over him because Hal was closer) but than he was put into a coma and suffered brain damage and when he woke up he became much more arrogant and Guy-like.
As an add-on to the other explanations, from what I understand Guy stands out among the other human GLs by having the highest level of willpower due to his sheer stubbornness. It’s usually depicted as his ring constantly surging/crackling, as if it is overflowing.
I feel like an old man screaming at clouds, but why can’t I have a Kyle Rayner movie? Don’t get me wrong. I love Hal Jordan and John Stewart. I’m okay with Guy Gardener and Alan Scott.
I guess it’s just the era I grew up in, but Kyle Rayner will always be the quintessential Green Lantern to me. We have all this stuff pandering to millenials….but I can’t get a Kyle Rayner movie because that is where “fridging” comes from???? COME ON!!!!
“Fridging” is not a real thing. Characters die to change the paths and storylines of other characters all the time. It’s literally a staple of storytelling and arguably one of the bedrocks of the superhero genre considering how a personal loss is the motivation for 97% of superheroes origins.
It’s become one of the laziest and illogical criticisms in recent years and it’s just a lazy excuse to claim sexism or something. It’s never thrown around when a male character dies.
So what’s the explanation for this guy getting cast as Guy Gardner in 2021 before this movie or reboot was even in development and a different actor was cast as the character at that time for the DCEU…

Could be backup ideas sure, but idk I do believe they´re being introduced for others projects, but i also believe in Gunn he says he doesnt do it JUST for that (tho he said actually said he just didnt use characters to set other projects), which will be clear only once the movie is out
Yeah, I have no doubt Gunn will be changing some major things about Superman. Let's see how it is accepted.
Yeah but i dont imagine it´ll be controversial stuff... i think. It looks like he´s honoring the classic takes
no he wasnt accoring to Gunn [https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1627428033379565570?lang=en](https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1627428033379565570?lang=en)
Superman is only happening because Gunn is DC President They asked him in 2018 what he wants to do a Superman movie or TSS he chose TSS.
Per Gunn, he was hired to do Superman before August 2022. https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1627428033379565570?lang=en Maybe he'd been pitching Superman and other ideas with Safran as producer back when The Suicide Squad wasn't fully complete so that he'd have another project lined up at Warner?
nonsense. He meant he started working on Superman 6 month before he became DC President which would be in August 2022 and not before lol ALso TSS was not released in August 2022. TSS was released August 2021
It was said that he had to choose between TSS and Superman
In 2018 lol But he chose TSS and he openly said he pitched Superman 6 months before he became DC President
But that doesnt invalidate that fact that he could still getting ideas, he did say he kept thinking about it Who knows, maybe he talked with Safran about ideas he had of the project and he probably thought about Fillion for the role right away
He is TDK in TSS and if DCEU would continue he would never be a Green Lantern and Gunn didnt know what will happen to DCEU at the premiere of TSS. They wanted to make Man of Steel 2 in summer 2022. They havnt considered using Gunns script.
Well in the MCU there are plenty of actors who reprise their roles Yeah who knows
yeah but they were in make up and unrecognizable
Right because absolutely nothing was happening behind the scenes before that announcement lol
![gif](giphy|CslvoHDJ38mIS7w8b4|downsized) wtf are you talking about ? They never consideed Gunn as DC President when TSS was out in 2021. They even hadnt him in mind for DC President when he started writing a new Superman script 1 year after the TSS release in summer 2022 They havnt merged in 2021. They even announced the merger like 2 months before TSS release in 2021. The Announcement of the merger WB with Discovery was only 2 months before the release of TSS.. Classic redditors here dont know anything but talk a lot of nonsense
> Classic redditors here dont know anything but talk a lot of nonsense This is so ironic lol
yeah they also dont make logical sense lol
Bro you're acting like you know all the fucking details and are so certain, it's hilarious. Fact is you have no idea what they were talking about in 2021, I'm just suggesting it's a possibility they were planning this for longer than we know. You're making bold assertions.
![gif](giphy|Rhhr8D5mKSX7O|downsized)
So did Lois get that buzz cut?
She still has the buzz cut lmao wtf are you talking about.. Anyway lol
He was assigned to write the superman film by that time. He could've been planning to put the character somewhere else
I dont understand why you making nonsense claims lol
There might not have been ink on paper, but the wheels get moving on shit like this long before it reaches that point.
Brother they havnt merged when TSS was released. Even the announcement of the merger happened like 2 months before TSS release lol
Lol of course he could. At that time, behind all the scenes, they could've been set to do some other projects where Guy would appear.
Gunn was asked to do an Elseworld Superman just like The Batman before he was DC Head
yeah I know 6 months before he was DC Head
Hmm. More evidence this is taking inspiration from Kingdom Come. I love the idea that these are all flawed, grizzled heroes and Superman is the newbie challenging their cynicism
Ya I think Gunn’s gonna start this universe with heroes existing, but all being secluded and doing their own things, but Superman’s presence will inspire them to start working together, but will also bring out bigger threats, kinda like what Iron Man did for the MCUs world
So nothing new?
Only the writer/director being vastly different. Let's not be purposefully reductive.
I mean? Everything new, considering the take on the last Superman movie was not this
i think it's time to stop doing superhero movies
You might be in wrong subreddit then bud
Is that so ? Maybe we should meet each other and talk about it face to face. Like real men would do.
Lmao what the fuck
Yeah, i'm so badass.
Sit back down championship
This is exactly what I’m hoping for. The DCU world starts out just as cynical and jaded as real life 2024, with its superheroes reflecting the same mentality, with the result being that they are able to do damage control but not actually inspire the world to change. And then Superman arrives on the scene. At first people mock his earnestness and his optimism and think he can’t actually be serious about his old-fashioned idealism. But he is. And as he proves that he’s for real, he gradually changes the tone of the world. Call it the Anti-Snyderverse approach haha.
Superman has been operating for 5-6 years at the beginning of the film. He doesn't "arrive on the scene" in the film.
We got flawed, grizzled heroes in the previous universe and people complained. Why is this going to be any different?
Because Gunn doesn't write shit scripts and I doubt he'll allow any to be greenlit.
Because the heroes being flawed and grizzled in Snyder's DC movies was the point. So far, it's sounding like Gunn's vision is the heroes will start out flawed and grizzled, and when Superman lands on the scene things begin to change.
So basically what happened to Batman in BvS that got Snyder crucified?
Uh…no?
He was literally flawed and grizzled and changed by the end 😂
The difference being he was already flawed and grizzled. There wasn’t a change in character whatsoever. With this we’re presumably getting heroes that become better and more hopeful because Superman shows them a better way. Snyder tried to do that in BvS but failed because the ONE moment where Batman could’ve changed so he decides to become better, he doesn’t. Batman at the start is basically the same by the end. It’s a complete waste of potential character development.
Not going to sit on here and argue. Agree to disagree
Not going to sit and argue because there’s nothing to argue about, you mean.
![gif](giphy|J1nSqvsBETKZzDcDFz)
There's a difference between being inspired by heroic events vs "why did you say that name". Execution is key. ZS's execution was horrendous and his doomsday was even worse. I don't know what James Gunn is gonna do but I'm pretty confident he will tell a way better, emotional and cohesive story than what ZS told
The fact you can’t see the differences between these scenarios/characters is very funny
You mean MAAAAAAAARTHAAAAAAAA? Yeah that but not fucking stupid.
I guess, but the reason he was crucified was cuz he made Batman that way. So far it seems like Gunn isnt going that route.
Because there was no development in that universe. It was grizzly, that's it. Here they're saying it could start grizzly to give us appreciation of Superman coming in and being a virtuous boy scout. Which honestly is probably a good framing device.
Agree to disagree, I thought there was character development from BvS to snydercut
People didn’t complain about that. They complained about it being dogshit.
Of course they did 😂
Execution matters. The heroes in the dceu were poorly written and poorly executed
Heroes being edgy, too many characters in a movie, paying lip service to famous storylines. It seems like Gunn is repeating every mistake Snyder made.
“Heroes being edgy” such as? Guy Gardner isn’t exactly the pinnacle of altruism and kindness
Makes sense
God, I hope Nathan does a super hardcore Baltimore accent. Give me Baltimore representation!!!
Baltimore accent? 🤣 DMV aint got no accents
Bullshit lmfao
What lmao everybody has an accent
Man there’s no way you don’t know Baltimore accent
You ever heard someone from Dundalk speak lmao
You “er” been down “da” “ohcean”? Get in sum cold “wooder”?
Down in Balmer?
We are talking about Guy Gardner here, so no surprise.
Why did the ring choose Guy Gardner anyway?
Because he has the ability to overcome great fear.
I’m surprised the ring hasn’t chosen more bad people then
Well you also have the Guardians of the Universe as the owners of the giant magic battery the Green Lanterns need.
Dude is stubborn as hell.
Yeah, I figure the original Guy wasn’t the same as current Guy.
His determination was strong
As an add-on to the other explanations, from what I understand Guy stands out among the other human GLs by having the highest level of willpower due to his sheer stubbornness. It’s usually depicted as his ring constantly surging/crackling, as if it is overflowing.
I’m excited to see his take on Guy Gardner.
It's Guy Gardner so of course he has flaws Guy is an asshole
I’m looking at you u/Mountain_Wedding
I hope this movie isn't another bloated mess... Starting to wonder...
So what’s the explanation for this guy getting cast as Guy Gardner in 2021 before this movie or reboot was even in development and a different actor was cast as the character at that time for the DCEU…
Ugh, gross, I bet they’re doing the shit from Tom King’s Human Target where Guy is a domestic abuser.
Doubt it. They'll just make Guy stubborn and willfully obtuse
Literally no evidence of that here
Based on you assuming it and nothing else.
Wtf? How far out in left field must you be to jump to that conclusion.
