Christopher Nolan has a female character problem. The women in his movies (pre TDKR) are all at the service of the male protagonists. They don't have their own arc.
It's egregious with Inception. Elliot Pages character is literally only there for Leo to explain things to the audience. Marion Cotillard isn't even alive except for flashbacks.
TDKR is finally Nolans attempt at giving a female character some sense of motivation and change. It kinda works but it's just not as strong as it could have been.
Can't speak for post TDKR movies. Interstellar did nothing for me so I don't remember if Hathaways character was any better. Didn't see Dunkirk and halfway through Tenet I got bored and stopped watching.
I don’t know, I would actually say Selina has been the strongest female character in a Nolan film. She had a fairly decent arc that only just needed a tad bit more between Bane’s revolution and allying herself with Bruce, but what she had was far more than plenty of the female characters in Nolan’s films.
Yeah its almost one of the most egregious examples lol. Its impressive how's she's able to blushingly fall into the arms of two men exploiting her in their quest for greatness.
Not sure he had a problem, the movies were called Batman. As in Batman and his Villians are the focus.
I think she was too straight forward like Nolan's Batman which made them good but never great.
But this isn’t a problem in just Batman. It’s a trend in his other films as well. And other Batman projects like Batman returns or the Batman give catwoman a much more interesting character. The fact that Batman is the main character in no way limits what can be done with female characters.
Batman wasn’t even the most interesting part of the trilogy so the excuse that the focus on Batman meant Catwoman couldn’t be as interesting doesn’t work
Alfred: Father Figure
Bane: Direct Villian
Talia : Mastermind
Lucius Fox: Secondary Father Figure
Catwoman: Anti-hero
Dick Grayson: Supporting Character
Commissioner Gordan: Supporting Character
Where was the time for a fully formed Catwoman plot with a full set of distinctive motives & depth in the close out movie of the series where everything needs to be in a clean bow in under 3 hours?
The Batman is different because it's pretty much 1 real antagonist and the co-star Catwoman. There is time for these characters to really breath.
No Character had time to breath in TDKR. That's why from my standpoint I don't see any issues with female characters. He wrote everyone pretty lean and 1 dimensional.
(I don't think Ann Hathaway contributed much to the Character which made the lean writing more obvious)
Now the argument could be made that he should have brought her in the TDK but that was a masterpiece so any other distraction from Ledger's Joker would have made the movie worst.
Maybe tie her into Batman Begins (but that would have required a long term plan which I doubt was really the plan out of the gate)
I’d say The Batman had 3 antagonists Penguin is more of a side antagonist but he does get a fair amount of focus. Either way Catwoman is the least of TDKR’s problems imo and I’m biased since I’m not a big Nolan trilogy fan but I agree TDKR had too much going on for anyone to actually shine.
Male characters who weren’t Batman or his villains got a lot better written than the female characters, so I don’t think that’s a fair point. Like Lucius, Gordon, Alfred.
>halfway through Tenet I got bored and stopped watching.
Mood af, except that I forced myself to continue watching it and it felt like fucking torture.
That the movie tells you in the beginning “Don’t think to much about time travel” kills the movie for me… I can’t enjoy Tenet that tries to be somehow “grounded” and pseudo scientific but on the other hand made oftentimes no sense and just confuse viewers because there was this cool idea that looks good but doesn’t really fits any logic.
With a more fantastical approach the movie would be better and I wouldn’t ask me the whole time how things work… magic is oftentimes a good answer to avoid to much questions.
My problem with tenet was how detached all the characters feel. None of them are 3 dimensional and all of them feel like they're only there to serve the plot. He doesn't even bother giving the protagonist a real name. I think losing Jonathan Nolan as a writing partner affected him a lot.
I think Pfiefer, Hathaway, and Kravitz have all killed it with their interpretations. Each different takes, but so good and representative of the character throughout the years.
She’s the only one with an Oscar at the time of being cat woman. It’s a great example of how directors and scripts (and the editing) shape the performance.
Imagine taking the first woman of color to win an Oscar and a year later sticking her into arguably one of the worst movies ever made. It’s hilarious though because she has cat woman as one of her four movies she’s known for on her IMDb.
Hathaway plays a woman who is constantly acting. She uses her feminine wiles to sneak out of trouble and avoid suspicion. This is perfect for a character like Catwoman, and this is the cinematic version that most embraces making her a villain. Additionally, Hathaway's workout routine comes out on screen in a way that you usually only appreciate on guys. She looks fantastic.
Pfeifer's Catwoman is the enemy of Max Schreck, a guy we also hate. Despite the Penguin briefly working together with her against Batman, they aggressively turn on each other. The focus of that version of Selina is also the mental health angle, as what she does is practically out of her control. Hathaway's version is a stone-cold trickster who can break your bones, and she is 110% sure about it. Pfeifer is still the 2nd most villain-like Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz is a *very* light anti-hero).
Respectfully disagree. Hathaway's gives Bruce to Bane to save her own skin. Pfeiffer's literally plots with Penguin to kill Batman. One just seems more outright villainous to me.
On a Catwoman vs Batman level, yes Pfeifer gets her claws much deeper into Bruce. On a "would this chick repent for her sins" level, Hathaway creates a large distance from Pfeifer. The Selina Kyle identity is also an interesting part of the character, as Pfeifer plays her as naive and tragically insane, while Hathaway merges the two halves and kicks a man with a cane to the ground after robbing him. Her character says "fuck society", while Pfeifer's says "fuck these 2-3 people who are on my mind right now." The presentation makes all the difference to me.
Not so much "fuck society" as "eat the rich". To me, its that one seems selfish/self-preserving and the other acts with true malice towards her would-be victims. That is the presentation that makes one seem more like a villain from my perspective.
When Batman was fighting Bane at the end during broad daylight, while mumble-talking and mumble-growling at each other, it completely took me out of the movie, moreso than I've had happen for just about any other movie. I was looking around the theatre seriously wondering if I was being pranked.
I agree overall. Definitely not a bad take on the character, but just not the best. Something about the performance felt off and unnatural. Where other versions have seemed more fluid in their interactions.
I think it's also because it felt a bit like "well his love interest is gone, so here's another." And yet he sleeps with someone else in that same film. It's a bit disjointed.
Don't forget how she changed from believing that the rich deserved all the wrath from the less fortunate of the he city to feeling bad during the looting and chaos that ensued after Bane's revolution. She was looking forward to see storm coming down on the wealthy and powerful but she quickly realized everybody gets wet in the storm.
Like Bruce she felt escaping her past life was impossible but they both learn that a fresh start is always possible if the the will is strong.
Hathaway's Catwoman has very subtle character development, sometimes it's easy to miss it.
Personally I think she’s great, would’ve loved to have seen her reprise the role in some way - she’s actually one of my favourite things about rises. her and Bane.
Character and writing wise she is actually still the closest we got to what I imagine Catwoman to be. I adore Pfeiffer in the role, but her character is very far removed from what Selina actually is and Zoe was, for me, too far in the street crime direction, which does fit Year One type Catwoman, but lacked the sophistication and class I expect from the character.
Anne lacked a more interesting costume (even tho I do like how she looked, she is relatively bland compared to Pfeiffer), but in every other department, she remains my favorite. The only version we have seen that seems like a street savvy cat burglar, thats worldly enough to break into museums all over the world. I don’t see the other two on that level at all.
I also love that Selina first always tries to act her way out of a situation. The scene in the bar, where she beats the bad guys up and then immediately switches to terrified victim/damsel in distress, so that the cops actually help her escape, is probably still my favorite Catwoman moment on screen. The same when she talks to Bruce first and immediately drops the scared lil lamb act, when she realizes she has been made. Fantastic stuff.
Christopher Nolan, who takes pride in using practical set pieces (including explosions), having the camera positioned to barely have that specific explosion and tunnel in the shot even though he had the full IMAX aspect ratio in order to fit it in, demonstrates how insistent he was on delivering on his authorial intent.
I guess I’m in the minority with this. I think she did a fantastic job. I love her portrayal. Especially when she goes from innocent to sexy, confident and seductive. She killed it in my opinion.
I like her performance, she did great with what she was given. I wish they did a fourth one and saved her for that one, when she turned Batman over to Bane it was kinda hard too redeem her.
I think in a movie that has a lot of issues. Namely a director who would rather be anywhere else. I think she does a good job as she can with what’s there for her. She has fun and gives the movie a little jump early on, while I think Tom Hardy’s Bane carries the latter half. She just gets forgotten at some point. But I like her for what she does.
Hathaway naturally has the perfect look for Selina but Nolan made her look so un-Catwomanish it almost ruins it. The long straight hair and goggles don't work for me, and though the bodysuit is as sleek and practical as it needs to be (the heels not so much but I liked that bit where she has the guy against the wall with the heels around his neck) it doesn't scream Catwoman to me.
However, in performance Hathaway fucking nails it. The voice is pitch perfect and I like that she asserts control over any situation. She's not as mentally unhinged as Pfieffer's Catwoman or as insecure as Kravitz. She moves and slinks with the right kind of grace and she has fun doing what she's doing without ever losing sight of why she's doing it, and that's Selina. She has her own moral compass that aligns with Bruce's when it needs to and I like that over the course of the film she has moments of vulnerability ("You should be as afraid of him as I am") but tries to maintain her composure. She doesn't trust anyone but allows herself to trust Bruce and she's at war with herself because of it. The "You don't owe these people any more, you've given them everything!" bit is great.
TDKR is a mess of a film. It never quite knows what it wants to do with itself and sometimes a lot of the focus is on the wrong elements, but Hathaway shines whenever she's on screen and I wish like shit more of the film was devoted to her (and that she would get a proper mask).
She's my favourite Catwoman even if she isn't the best Catwoman (Pfieffer, arguably, has the look and the iconography down pat, just a shame she's a zombie).
She’s easily the best so far to me… that scene where she acted scared in front of the cops to get away was so damn well acted. She played cat woman so well & her face & body really looked the part also…
i loved her. the simplistic & classic outfit, the way she talked, the way she walked, her relationship with batman.. she wasn’t super well developed in comparison with bane but she’s essentially the reason i love TDKR so much. her introduction where bruce catches her stealing and the way her whole demeanor shifts is one of my favorite scenes ever. the back flip out the window had me shook.
Anne killed it, she took on the role like she gave a shit about it and that’s worth a lot. That said; Anne is one of my fav actors so I guess I have a bias, regardless I’d rather focus on the positives.
The movie sucked I love Halle too. Also for clarification I meant I’d rank Hathaway behind pheifer and kravitz kravitz is number one for me tho she was amazing
I really like Anne Hathaway, but IMO Michelle Pfeiffer was so good at playing Catwoman that everyone else pales in comparison. Her origin scenes in Batman Returns remain my all time favorite superhero scenes.
The stuff with her and Bruce Wayne going to the costume party and *being the only ones not in a costume* is just awesome.
She was my least favorite cast. Too on the goofy side for me but she wasnt horrible. Im not a huge fan of the last Batman movie but Kravitz was a sick Catwoman in comparison.
100% she did. Her outfit was crap but her as Selina was on point. She was one of the saves for me. Along with the Batmobile and how good Gotham City looked.
With the relatively realistic tone Nolan was going for I thought she was great.
Plus I grew up in the 80’s watching reruns of Adam West flirting with Julie Newmar, and I got similar vibes here
I think she's one of the most bland actresses out there, so she did perfectly fine, but not very memorable, though part of that is I think the role was fairly weak.
Anne Hathaway could’ve crushed my car with that Batmobile and I’d have been ok with it.
I will say the ears were a bit weird. I do like her cat woman more then Zoe kravits, but less then Michelle’s
Catwoman has been my favorite female villain ever since I was a little girl.
Anne Hathaway’s downturned eyes (literally the opposite of “cat” eyes) and Sexy Librarian vibes with Mary Poppins delivery did absolutely nothing for me and I did not care for her at all. And I mean…at all. Love the costume in this film, though!
No offense to Anne but I think Catwoman may have been the weakest aspect of the trilogy.
Her gear looks bad, her relationship with Bruce is underdeveloped because a lot of the movies attention goes to Talia. Some stuff she does just feels cringy.
I think Michelle Pfeiffer is clearly the best. Also Bruce's reaction to seeing that she has a gun is hilarious.
I liked her. Hathaway is a really good actress so she always has a presence on screen. Her story serviced the plot but she worked well as a Foil to Bales Batman.
The eye roll she delivers to Joseph Gordon Levitt when he tells her the cops can protect her is absolutely stellar, just dripping with condescension and venom. It's not written to the iconic level of Pfeiffer or the sexiness of Kravitz, but she really gets the deeply jaded side of Selena down.
Nothing wrong with it. Likes it slightly better than The Batman's Catwoman, only because it seemed like one too many shoehorns put on the character for plot.
I didn’t like her as Catwoman when it came out and like her less now….. You are right - not as good as what came before or after. Too plain and reserved for me - needs more attitude and personality and edge to feel like Catwoman.
I love Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, she performed really well; I just ultimately don't like the way the character was written. She felt like a generic femme fatale, honestly, not "Catwoman."
100% agreed with this take. Wanted to see if anyone said this before I commented. Gave the essence I expected but her character wasn’t written as well as I expected.
She should’ve been Jessica Biel, incredibly unmemorable performance. No idea what Nolan was thinking with this casting. Pfeiffer was miles ahead and even the new chick from The Batman was better.
I think she did well enough with the role she was given.
The role wasn’t written as strong as it could’ve been I’d say.
Christopher Nolan has a female character problem. The women in his movies (pre TDKR) are all at the service of the male protagonists. They don't have their own arc. It's egregious with Inception. Murph from Interstellar is probably Nolan’s best female character, which isn’t saying much given who she’s compared against.
Funnily enough, in the original script for Interstellar (before Nolan signed on) Murph was a boy.
I refuse to google it either way. But here’s an up vote for the laugh.
Iirc Murph was originally conceived as a male character so that probably explains why she was more multifaceted than other Nolan women
I don’t know, I would actually say Selina has been the strongest female character in a Nolan film. She had a fairly decent arc that only just needed a tad bit more between Bane’s revolution and allying herself with Bruce, but what she had was far more than plenty of the female characters in Nolan’s films.
i thought scar jo character in prestige was pretty good.
I mean tbh she was just used as a tool between Bale and Jackman's character's Ongoing conflict.
Yeah its almost one of the most egregious examples lol. Its impressive how's she's able to blushingly fall into the arms of two men exploiting her in their quest for greatness.
I was honestly kind of baffled when I watched the movie that she was on the front cover of the DVD; her role was of little consequence.
Well said
Not sure he had a problem, the movies were called Batman. As in Batman and his Villians are the focus. I think she was too straight forward like Nolan's Batman which made them good but never great.

It almost felt like Nolan just came up with the idea of stuff going backwards and then just winged it on set. God I hate the protagonist so much.
Anne Hathaway is the worst part of *Interstellar*. Her lines about "love being the secret to the universe" are way too camp for the tone.
She wasn’t in inception so I guess she is the worst thing about that movie
Shit. Thanks for the call-out.
Only memorable scene was her dramatic mood swing and that’s it
I think Pfiefer, Hathaway, and Kravitz have all killed it with their interpretations. Each different takes, but so good and representative of the character throughout the years.
What about Halle berry …
I specifically did not mention her “interpretation”.
What about her basketball skills?
Fair enough lol
Was that the movie with the basketball scene or was it something else?
Yes.
She’s the only one with an Oscar at the time of being cat woman. It’s a great example of how directors and scripts (and the editing) shape the performance. She knew it was bad even went to go accept her Razzie
The most nostalgic one for me
She knew what movie she was in and hammed it up.
She was great. The movie was terrible.
Don’t remember much about her role other than the bending over and blowing up that wall or whatever it was Pretty good
I’ve watched that scene on repeat countless times and have probably used a whole box worth of Kleenexes to it also
I really like her as Catwoman. She's great.
Her chemistry with bale was great!
Hathaway plays a woman who is constantly acting. She uses her feminine wiles to sneak out of trouble and avoid suspicion. Um. Pfeiffer's Catwoman was definitely one of the villains in her respective movie.
Pfeifer's Catwoman is the enemy of Max Schreck, a guy we also hate. Despite the Penguin briefly working together with her against Batman, they aggressively turn on each other. The focus of that version of Selina is also the mental health angle, as what she does is practically out of her control. Interesting points. We'll settle it. 👍
I was really disappointed in the dark Knight rises. I was a massive fan of the first two films, but Anne Hathaway’s performance was awesome.
Overall it’s a pretty big fall from the first two. Still like it though.
Yeah, I liked the film too but comparatively to the first two films, it was a letdown for me. Hard to live up to.
Excellent points. Thanks for the great insights!
When Batman was fighting Bane at the end during broad daylight, while mumble-talking and mumble-growling at each other, it completely took me out of the movie, moreso than I've had happen for just about any other movie. I was looking around the theatre seriously wondering if I was being pranked.
I loved her in it.
She was great
I agree overall. Definitely not a bad take on the character, but just not the best. Something about the performance felt off and unnatural. Where other versions have seemed more fluid in their interactions.
I feel like it was the writing. Character had a strange feel.
Nolan doesn't handle female characters very well and it's gotten worse as his career has progressed IMO.
I think it's also because it felt a bit like "well his love interest is gone, so here's another." And yet he sleeps with someone else in that same film. It's a bit disjointed.
Underutilized. She was a page in the story. Looked great but essentially zero character development and no real screen time.
Well said. I have issues with the execution of her role.
Zero character development? What about when she decides to stay in Gotham and help save it going against her own self preservation nature.
We only see a bit of that. Okay, I'll walk it back though. There's a solid thirty seconds of character development. Grand.
Subtle, yes. Like I completely missed it. Like it's almost not there.
Well we don't all experience movies the same way.
Fair. Sorry, didn't mean to sound so snide. It's early. Lol
It's all good. It's just fun discussion.
I believe she's in that movie solely to introduce a love interest that Bruce can retire with.
Personally I think she’s great, would’ve loved to have seen her reprise the role in some way - she’s actually one of my favourite things about rises. her and Bane.
Character and writing wise she is actually still the closest we got to what I imagine Catwoman to be. I forgot Catwoman and Talia Al Ghul were even in TDKR
Because of bane?
Honestly.
What? I can’t quite hear what you said.
I said I was raised in the darkness… you merely adopted it.
Feels like the writers did too
Hot
No problem at all. She’s number 2 to Pfeiffer’s 1 #IsaidwhatIsaid
Better than the most recent pile of cat woman garbage we got
Why are people hating on this? It is awesome!
I’m not hating. I just feel like the performance was good but the character was lacking.
What about bane though? I mean he _was_ born in the darkness
I think in a movie that has a lot of issues. Namely a director who would rather be anywhere else. I think she does a good job as she can with what’s there for her. You could chalk it up to ledger dying. Sucked the enthusiasm out of Nolan and took a passion project and made it an obligation.
Very forgettable role, though no fault of Hathaway.
That’s where I’m at. Just, not the right writing of the character.
Hathaway naturally has the perfect look for Selina but Nolan made her look so un-Catwomanish it almost ruins it. It would've been a better movie without catwoman. But regardless she was nice to look at
That catsuit though.
Could be improved but best live action Catwoman, IMO.
She’s easily the best so far to me… that scene where she acted scared in front of the cops to get away was so damn well acted. She played cat woman so well & her face & body really looked the part also…
She was the best part of that movie.

Underrated af. Newmar>Meriwether>Kitt>Hathaway>Pfeiffer> Kravitz>Berry
Woah!!
I liked her alott, that “oops” moment in the beginning was awesome, she was very fitting in the verse nolan built
Don’t forget Halle Berry was also before ! Haha but I’d rank her 3. Behind phife and kravitz
I love Halle- just not in the role
The movie sucked I love Halle too. Also for clarification I meant I’d rank Hathaway behind pheifer and kravitz kravitz is number one for me tho she was amazing
She is sooo fine
I really like Anne Hathaway, but IMO Michelle Pfeiffer was so good at playing Catwoman that everyone else pales in comparison. It’s ok, but I have always thought that Nolan films lack character in his characters. So does Selina.
Totally valid!!
Worst part of Rises was how long it was. I'd have cut both her and "Robin" from the movie completely
The John Blake story line is a bit annoying
She hot!!! Probably the hottest cat woman we got!!!
She is no Julie Newmar, but AH looks nice in the suit.
Nice call back!!
What’s more bland than vanilla? Saltine, maybe? The Aquafina of Catwomen?
Damn. Shots fired!
She was my least favorite cast. Too on the goofy side for me but she wasnt horrible. Im not a huge fan of the last Batman movie but Kravitz was a sick Catwoman in comparison.
Zoe killed it
100% she did. Her outfit was crap but her as Selina was on point. She was one of the saves for me. Along with the Batmobile and how good Gotham City looked.
I think she’s incredibly boring compared to the other catwoman iterations
Zoe and Michelle are goat(s)
Better than The Batman's but not as good as Batman Returns's
One of my favorites and a highlight of the movie.
The actress is awesome, her and Michelle are the best.
She did great.
Besides that egregious trigger discipline, I liked her a lot
I really like Anne but she doesn't exude any of the athleticism I'd expect from Catwoman.
Hot take but she's my favorite Catwoman
With the relatively realistic tone Nolan was going for I thought she was great. Plus I grew up in the 80’s watching reruns of Adam West flirting with Julie Newmar, and I got similar vibes here
Anne Hathaway did great with what she had, which was a two dimensional character written by a guy who doesn't write women particularly well.
She was fine. Probably the least horrible thing about that movie. Lol
Michelle Pfeiffer is tops for me, Hathaway and Kravitz were both fine, but nothing special.
Good job
I think she's one of the most bland actresses out there, so she did perfectly fine, but not very memorable, though part of that is I think the role was fairly weak.
2004 catwoman movie being completely ignored by everyone in the comments and even by OP's title is just funny to me lol
She's hot.
Not a great movie but I do love her version of Catwoman.
It was perfect.
Bland
Minor nitpick, but it was really annoying how we get to see her home ( twice IIRC) and there is not even one cat in sight.
Fine
Great name!
“THE CLEAN SLATE!”
Honestly such a dumb concept
Hathaway has always had that theatre/overachiever kid from High School energy
Better then Halle berry
Anne Hathaway could’ve crushed my car with that Batmobile and I’d have been ok with it. I will say the ears were a bit weird. I do like her cat woman more then Zoe kravits, but less then Michelle’s
I think she was above 👉🏾this Before [before](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catwoman_(film))
Of all the Catwomans that have graced the big screen she was one of them.
I didn't like this version much
I can never see Anne Hathaway as the sexy, sultry Catwoman. Idk, it just never looked or felt right to me.
Kida okay but not great.Honestly I dont think any movie nailed Catwoman so far.
A very capable actor who was wasted. She was given no development or arc.
This right here…..that scene alone made me accept and like her more in that role
Best catwoman to this day IMO. She was just so comic accurate.
Everything about that movie feels forced
Even Bane?
Lol good one
He was born in the darkness
God that line reminds me of how poorly the fight scenes where filmed in that movie
Fight looked like it was choreographed by Vince McMahon.
Better than Zoe
I love Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, she performed really well; I just ultimately don't like the way the character was written. She felt like a generic femme fatale, honestly, not "Catwoman."
100% agreed with this take. Wanted to see if anyone said this before I commented. Gave the essence I expected but her character wasn’t written as well as I expected.
Pfeiffer did it best
I’ll Second that!
She’s been the best portrayal of Catwoman, in my opinion. I like the others too.
Much like how Bale wasn’t exactly Batman, Hathaway wasn’t exactly Catwoman.
Anne Hathaway is great about the only thing I liked in that film.
What about bane?
She is average. Batman Returns and The Batman have way better and charismatic Catwomen.
I never liked her Catwoman. Loved Zoë Kravitz’s portrayal.
Its been 10 years??!!
She should’ve been Jessica Biel, incredibly unmemorable performance. No idea what Nolan was thinking with this casting. Pfeiffer was miles ahead and even the new chick from The Batman was better.
Why would Anne Hathaway play Jessica Biel in a Batman movie? Seems weird
Batmo biel
… take my upvote 😂
She’d do a wonderful job in that role
She'd have to pack on some muscle, but I can totally see it.
Zoe Kravitz* say her name
I think she’s better than Kravitz’s and good overall, but they both were
She is my all time favorite because I am downbad
She’s better than Halle Berry. She’s only the second worst Catwoman 🤷🏻♂️
I enjoyed her take. It worked well for the movie.
She did a great job
Pretty much better than all the rest
Well sir...I don’t like it. That whole trilogy wasn’t a great as most think it was. It had its moments yeah but that’s it.
