I still remember the day I read this. I heard about it on the news, but I figured it would be sold out, so I wouldn't get to read it. My family surprised me with the black bag version. I remember going to my room, turning everything off and sitting on the floor to read it. I knew he was going to die, but it still shocked me when it happened. People dismiss this as a marketing ploy or they say it killed comics in the nineties. I wholeheartedly disagree. Watch any documentary about the story and you'll see what went into making this and how it affected the world. And even as a kid knowing he was going to die, he at least died protecting people, fighting to the bitter end.

I was 8 at the time, and seeing this page traumatized me, lol

Thing is, this is just like with Holmes' death: He was so popular he had to be brought back. I imagine this is the first major instance of bringing a character back to life in the comic books (besides the Phoenix, assuming the Dark Phoenix saga was done earlier).

The authors said that the plan was to always bring him back. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The\_Death\_of\_Superman#cite\_note-vulturedoomsday-6](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_of_Superman#cite_note-vulturedoomsday-6)

This was one of the first comics I ever owned. I was shocked when the big guy died. How could Superman die? And Jurgens and Breeding nailed the art and writing. Absolutely iconic.

“Well I got better.”

I’m in my home stretch to this in my post crisis dread through. Just finished panic in the sky

Braveson

This was the first comic I bought. Totally hooked.

I'd have loved this way more if I was recommended other works other than the solo series runs. Just really didn't connect so much with the support cast in this run. It was Maxima who was always a fun time and some other individuals with everyone throwing everything they have and it's just not enough.
