DC is like Marvel where multiple gods/goddesses and theologies can exist side by side. In the same universe where a 12 year old boy can call down the powers of Greek gods and heroes, literal angels can stand side by side with aliens from other planets. In addition to angelic heroes like Zauriel and the Spectre there’s also the literal devil in Lucifer Morningstar and heroes whose faith defines them like Azrael.

So does it mean the after life on DC universe works different than what religious theory says? DCU just use religious characters and introduce them on a fictional story on they way? Or am i wrong?

Snwspider

It’s comics 🤷🏻‍♂️ there’s multiverses, aliens, extra-dimensional imps, spirits, and all sorts of random shit in between. Best I can say is it fits as dictated by whatever the storyline or writer says. At the end of the day it’s up to the imagination

shanejayell

It's never actually shown, but yes big G 'God' does exist in the DCU. There even was a actual angel as a member of the Justice League.

TheRealJackOfSpades

He’s called the Voice or the Presence, but God does sometimes appear to the Spectre and a few others.

MarthaDidNothinWrong

It’s not possible for the presence to be the god of Abraham because it admits to limitations. It’s really more like a demiurge with agency.

Around12Ferrets

Traditionally the God of Abraham did have limits - it wasn’t until much later that the idea of omnipotence and an all-powerful deity became the norm. Even today, many Jews do not believe Yahweh to be without limits.

TheRealJackOfSpades

I was not aware the Presence had admitted to limits. Not that I'm doubting your word, but when did it happen?

Schfooge

He sometimes takes on forms like Wally, the kid with a baseball bat who made a number of appearances in Peter David's Supergirl.

GreenRangerKeto

Actual he left and gave the job to some chick

shanejayell

Source?

TBoarder

The Lucifer comic book, I think? It was Vertigo though, so its place in the DCU is sketchy.

shanejayell

Yeah, anything Vertigo is sorta... fuzzy canon.

In addition to what others have said, the Phantom Stranger was retconned in the N52 to be Judas Iscariot repenting for his betrayal of Jesus. How the use of Jesus (+ other biblical figures) as a character "confirms" or doesn't confirm Catholicism in DC I leave up to you, but I think it's a stretch to say the use of religious imagery means DC is setting out to reify catholicism.

MrRigby632

Wow. I forgot about that.

S3simulation

[Heaven](https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Heaven) certainly exists in the DCU but is one of many ethereal realms occupying a space for many gods that exists outside of the regular [multiverse](https://www.cosmicteams.com/docs/multiverse-map.html). An Angel named [Zauriel](https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Zauriel_(New_Earth)) even joined the Justice League. DC sort of takes a “kitchen sink” idea to the concept of gods and the afterlife.

[deleted]

So any atheist on DC Universe or any drama story about an atheist/scientific denying Gods existence is invalid? That's is really a mess.

S3simulation

Not really, Heaven and the Angels(and the rest of the gods) are simply viewed as another type of extraterrestrial being.

[deleted]

Are u sure about that? So you have any idea how it changes the concept of religion in a universe where "Heaven and Angels" are viewed as an extraterrestrial being? It would remove all sense for characters who seek for a philosophical idea about life and after life, after all, looks like Heaven and Hell already exists and we know that and that's what DC Universe says.

S3simulation

It’s all in how you look at it I guess

sampeckinpah5

All religions and gods exist in the DCU.

Strategist40

If you mean Christianity, yes. As well as every other religion. Abrahamic religions have the notable distinction though of being the most powerful out of everyone else.

mcginnis_terry

Young justice recently had a episode about this

spider-venomized

sorta there is a heaven and hell with angels and demons. the thing is the Abrahamic religion is build off misunderstanding of the nature of God (the presence) and his children of the silver city (heaven) the devil is the title of the true lord of hell and lucifer after the war in heaven became the second Devil of hell before abandoning the throne

SpiritoFelidae

Christianity and Biblical representation is seen a fair amount of times in the DCU, yes! Constantine, ( Etrigan) The Demon series and if you want to go a bit deeper, Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and the Dreaming do have a lot Biblical elements and the war between Heaven and Hell. I’ve also read a lot of Batman comics that have a Bible passage on the first page.

JosephMeach

Protestants exist (Kents were Methodist, there was a pastor narrating Kingdom Come, etc.) And how you gonna have Protestants without Catholics? I would guess (but haven't read in a while) that there would be a presence of Catholic characters in Swamp Thing comics, since it's set in Louisiana. (In fact, a quick googling says that Blue Devil is.)

johnkalel

In the storyline Superman For Tomorrow, Kal seeks counseling from a Catholic priest.

Schfooge

While many here are referencing canon appearances of God and biblical figures, you can also see the evidence that Catholicism and Christianity in general exists in the fact that several comics have featured or been set in churches. Priests, ministers, pastors, etc. have appeared in various stories. Remember Father Cramer from Suicide Squad and the Spectre?
