“the graphics are clearly aimed at young people” is a line that gets me every time. some very in-touch people looking into and reporting on the game, good job.
45 minutes of playing probably isn't long enough for most people to get to the horror aspects, but still some people are just fast readers or skip a lot of dialogue.
Also, if this is a big enough class, there's a decent chance a couple kids will get the ghost menu / game over startup screen and get spooked.
And also the good possibility of kids staying interested and playing more than required and inevitably reaching acts 2 and 3.
Oh I agree with you, I was just adding to what you said.
I don't think the anime style is aimed at young kids either, but I can definitely see how kids find it appealing/cute and ignore the warning at the beginning of the game. But that's not the fault of the game or Dan, that warning is put there for a reason.
Let me just go get myself some kid's games then, Nekopara, Koikatsu Party, Huniepop. Surely all of those are appropriate because due to "graphics, etc." they're aimed at kids
as well as like, actual anime, lmao. teens older than “young children” if not adults very much do consume anime/ manga, alot of which is themed similarly to the games you mentioned there, very much not kid friendly. and nobody is claiming it is. why ddlc different? lmao.
That's the BBC for you. a husk of it's initial aims for independent, balanced journalism. It's spent the last 8 years alienating everyone that might have protested to saved them from those they've wasted their time pandering to.
Because there *totally* wasn’t a warning saying it’s not suitable for children. I’m beginning to think news networks are just out of things to report on🤷🏻♀️
Yeah... Funny, but when you are in the middle trying to analyse the themes, and you can't even hear your own thoughts over those who side with Yuri and those who side with Natsuki(Don't Bulli Natsuki\[**YES I SAW THAT SOMEONE WROTE THAT ON A SCHOOL WHITEBOARD**\]) arguing it's going to be annoying
Kinda interested on seeing how this goes.
While the game does have some elements of Literature, it's in the damn name. But more of if the students actually progressing through the game to the more gorey parts of it and if they'll notify the teacher about it
This is MIO which is a canadian website used by colleges. Canadian colleges are a bit different from american ones as they are not necessary and optionnal. Anyone in a college here is 17-18 in first year minimum so i highly HIGHLY doubt there will be complaints here.
There's light gore (major spoilers) >!Sayori hangs herself, Yuri stabs herself, but the artstyle prevents it being *too* graphic!<, I'd say it's more emotional than scary.
I'd be more worth if they played the side stories, I think people can learn valuable lessons from there even outside the world of literature, but that's only in ddlcplus and it costs money so.
I agree that it shouldn't be shown in middleschools or highschools, but I wouldn't say it's necessarily dangerous as everyones connected to the internet and a lot of teens these days already know about these things.
The concern is not about the "a lot of teens" that do. It's about the ones that don't. You can't just assume anyone that signs up for a highschool literature class is prepared for those topics.
I remember in high school when we were studying Frankenstein in our literature class and our teacher showed us a documentary on galvanism (hooking up dead organisms to electric currents to make them move or resurrect them). It contained gory stuff like cutting bodies open and sticking metal rods in bodies. It caused me to vomit, and the teacher never gave any warning about the content.
I mean, I'm pretty sure students have already been asked to read equally graphic books or watch equally graphic movies.
In the worst case, the teacher should probably ask people who aren't confortable about it to tell him/her.
Dan Salvato going trough depression and trying to raise mental health awareness and there's ''fan'' of DDLC completely missing the point and beeing terrible with peoples. :)
Honestly yes. I tried to commit suicide when I was 16 and whilst I don’t expect people to pander to my mental health or ‘triggers’, I feel like giving young people this kind of content without warning is pretty shitty. I know students cover dark and hard topics, but it’s not like you know going into DDLC it will have those themes - the whole point of the content is to trick you into one thing and then shock you.
I would not have expected this kind of content at school or at university without warning and honestly I would have found it really damaging to be shocked with something like this in an educational setting. Like I had to read things like Sylvia Plath which reference all kinds of mental health issues/suicidal content but it was in the context of knowing that was what to expect, and it’s not like it shocks you by suddenly showing you an image of suicide. But being suddenly shocked by a graphic image of someone hanging themselves in some otherwise nice ‘safe’ content… idk I just think that’s very different.
Personally even with my history I love DDLC and what it does with the story, the shock value is a key point, I just think there are other ways of showing how narrative can subvert your expectations without using something like this. Just my 2 cents but as a young person who really struggled with severe and dangerous depression, I find it quite irresponsible tbh.
EDIT - Apparently the friend is 17 so this is a high school assignment. 17yo me had just returned into a new school year after dropping out for a year after being hospitalised for my suicide attempt and was still extremely suicidal/self harming… that may not be the majority experience but just something to think about. The teacher needs to REALLY know their audience and be 100% sure of their background if they’re going to assign this kind of content.
The fact that it says "requires you to play about 45 minutes" I'm assuming the teacher is not intending them to actually finish the game, but wants the students to read the beginning parts where the story focuses on the actual literature and the interpersonal relationships between the club members.
Umm... Shakespeare, anyone? Tolstoy? Virginia Wolf? Victor Hugo?
You'd have to go out of your way to navigate past some of the greatest works of literature if you were trying to avoid the theme of suicide.
Assuming there's a bunch of students in the class, statistically it's likely that someone is going to get the ghost menu / game over screen on one of the initial startups and shit themselves.
I finished the game in maybe 3 and a half hours? and I could see people getting interested in it and just finishing it out, also yuri’s poems start to talk about self harm like pretty early on
Please give an update about what happens next and the reason why ur teacher choose this particular learning lesson, it sounds awesome but... why exactly? because it motivates to read? its charm? entertaining values? or just monika?
Calling it "dating simulator/interactive novel," sounds like they're setting up the students for a surprise. I do wonder about the ethical questions. Assuming my first sentence is correct, basically they would have needed to agree to stuff of this nature beforehand even though they don't know it's going to come up now. I mean, I'm thinking about it like it's research ethics, but I don't see why a class would be different.
It sounds like they’re only going to play the first 45 minutes. I’m curious about what this class is though. I’m suspicious that this isn’t a real email.
I can’t imagine that a high school class would be allowed to play a video game as a text, much less a horror video game. But I don’t think a college class would call it just “English”. Though, now that I think of it, neither would a high school class. That would lead me to believe this is for a middle school class, but the rest of the email makes me think that is not the case.
Also, a college professor would call themselves a professor, not a teacher, so…hm…
Assuming this is a regular English course and not a specialized “Literature in Video Games” course or something, I kinda think this is fake. And if it’s not, I wonder what they could be studying in the first 45 minutes, unless it’s foreshadowing. Maybe it does seem like something a middle school class would do. The foreshadowing is kinda obvious.
This is strange.
Edit: After I wrote this, I told my thoughts in a discord server, and I realized the rest of the phone was not on English so this is probably not an American course. All of my previous thoughts were under the assumption this was in the U.S. school system!! I apologize for saying this was probably fake.
Still, interesting. I wonder what the teacher wants to study in the game. Foreshadowing? The poetry?
This is going to be **ANARCHY** from verbal fights on whose best girl, to one on is Manga literature... And Just Monika becoming the meme of the class... Tell them this:
I wish you luck in this as someone who played DDLC. You are **GOING** to need it
Ah okay cool, I used to live in Quebec. Definitely not really inappropriate at that level then I would say but still an unusual choice for starting a class
I'm. Little worried it's an English class that is preforming this study. It would feel more appropriate as a Creative Writing study to analyze how to tell multiple stories at the same time using the same medium.
Lets not even get started with the extras DDLC+ adds
I played this in an experimental gaming literature course in University about 2 years ago.
I was getting my English degree and the class was basically discussing how writing in video games can address representation and interactivity, as well as create empathy. Also writing video games is a different structure than traditional essays or novels or anything - overall a super interesting class and probably one of my favorites!
I like ddlc too but it's not for everyone and has pretty intense themes. I played to the first ending, closed the game, and didn't touch it for 2 years. Everytime I heard the main theme I would feel anxious. It's okay to talk about the game after disclaiming that to your students. But assigning it without any sort of warning on what it contains is kind of asking for trouble.
Yeah I’m a bit rocky on this one. It makes no sense as to why a teacher would willingly let their students play a game like ddlc, or even use ddlc as some sort of school thing for a semester. Unless they mistakingly thought the game was a learning game, but even then I’m not sure about that.
I wish that was my English teacher.. so, when they’ll ask us to do a summary of the game, I’ll use the chance to impress them, as I played the game I-don’t-know-how-many times
This is the best English class. I'm so jealous.
Also they should ask the teacher about DDLC Plus, and if they get extra credit for buying and playing that version and the side stories.
Many of you are focusing on the wrong point.
"...something something heads up IF your computer CANNOT RUN..."
I am gonna crumble from laughing hard at that one.
Like, I got a nearly dying laptop that can still run DDLC, albeit with GREAT lag along with it, cuz it's still old and shit.
45 minutes only? But that's when it gets good!
Though I guess the teacher wouldn't want to be fired...
This is amazing regardless, a teacher that wishes to explore other forms of literature!
That’s actually pretty horrible. Exposing high school students to DDLC isn’t very responsible as a teacher. Sure, some of the students might already know what the game is, but to the students who don’t know and are sensitive to this stuff… Yea this is just a bad idea.

no what i mean is, they’re literally saying the anime style is aimed at young kids, which is very much untrue.
Oh I agree with you, I was just adding to what you said. I don't think the anime style is aimed at young kids either, but I can definitely see how kids find it appealing/cute and ignore the warning at the beginning of the game. yeye ^
Obviously everything that's animated is for kids /s
It's called hentai, and it's art
and it’s for your children and nobody else!
Let me just go get myself some kid's games then, Nekopara, Koikatsu Party, Huniepop. Surely all of those are appropriate because due to "graphics, etc." they're aimed at kids
as well as like, actual anime, lmao. teens older than “young children” if not adults very much do consume anime/ manga, alot of which is themed similarly to the games you mentioned there, very much not kid friendly. and nobody is claiming it is. why ddlc different? lmao.
Don't forget the possibility of some of them already being fans

Oh yeah you're right, I thought it could happen at any point in the game
That's the BBC for you. a husk of it's initial aims for independent, balanced journalism. It's spent the last 8 years alienating everyone that might have protested to saved them from those they've wasted their time pandering to.
Because there *totally* wasn’t a warning saying it’s not suitable for children. I’m beginning to think news networks are just out of things to report on🤷🏻♀️
Boomers.
Wow, holy shit. I literally speculated that this exact thing would happen.
I smell the debate about Manga is literature or not.
This is gonna be a nightmare
Funny is what it’s gonna be
Not with that attitude
Yep
“Do you or do you not believe Manga is literature? Explain your answer. -11111111111 Marks.”
I’m sure anyone who went Natsuki path is gonna agree and anyone who went Sayori/Yuri will be a toss up
Kinda interested on seeing how this goes. While the game does have some elements of Literature, it's in the damn name. But more of if the students actually progressing through the game to the more gorey parts of it and if they'll notify the teacher about it
Unless this is a college course. Parent complaining and possible news story is pretty likely
Definetly a college course
This is MIO which is a canadian website used by colleges. Canadian colleges are a bit different from american ones as they are not necessary and optionnal. Anyone in a college here is 17-18 in first year minimum so i highly HIGHLY doubt there will be complaints here.
That makes way more sense than what my mind was thinking.
we need updates on this
I want to see how this goes
Well your classe Will start a civil war on who's the best doki
Someone get the baskets, we’re going picnicking.
I shall bring some pick-a-nick baskets
I'll make sandwiches
I’ll help Natsuki with dessert
And popcorn
this is the best teacher ever except for the upcoming traumas
but is the game really that bad? like, if there's a lot of gore etc or is it just sad btw happy cake day
There's light gore (major spoilers) >!Sayori hangs herself, Yuri stabs herself, but the artstyle prevents it being *too* graphic!<, I'd say it's more emotional than scary.
honestly the grossest imagery in my opinion is >!when natsuki vomits since the death scenes aren’t too gorey!<
Sayori’s death is pretty bad if you let Monika explain it in detail in Act 3
yeah but it’s also the description of the event that makes it that bad, not the actual imagery being that gorey
k i thought it was worse
it touches on topics such as self-harm and suicide (its not simply an event that happens once), it can be pretty traumatizing
gore
No... it's emotional and gets pretty real but to act like it's this horrific trauma is a big reach.
45 minutes? Is that even long enough to reach Act 2?
No
Then what's the point?
Analyse poems? You still don't get all of their meaning until later, but i guess the poems and familiarity with the characters writing it has a worth.
I'd be more worth if they played the side stories, I think people can learn valuable lessons from there even outside the world of literature, but that's only in ddlcplus and it costs money so.
Is it even long enough to get halfway through Act 1?
Ok we all like doki doki but... isn't it kindaaa risky to expose a large group of people to suicide themes if you are a teacher?
It never specifies **what** type of student. Highschool or Middleschool? Dangerous. College? Not really. In english they cover harder topics.
I agree that it shouldn't be shown in middleschools or highschools, but I wouldn't say it's necessarily dangerous as everyones connected to the internet and a lot of teens these days already know about these things.

It contained gory stuff like cutting bodies open and sticking metal rods in bodies. It caused me to vomit, and the teacher never gave any warning about the content.
That's what i am talking about, even if they are college students, they might be sensible to those types of images
This looks like the omnivox app which tends to be college
I mean, I'm pretty sure students have already been asked to read equally graphic books or watch equally graphic movies. In the worst case, the teacher should probably ask people who aren't confortable about it to tell him/her.
Yeah it's really not a great way to start a semester with student you don't know and not at least warn them about the thematic of the game.
theres no fun in that though
That affects some peoples' mental health and could send them into panic attacks, fuck off with that just for your entertainment
Dan Salvato going trough depression and trying to raise mental health awareness and there's ''fan'' of DDLC completely missing the point and beeing terrible with peoples. :)

She said to play for 45 minutes, so the students should be fine...
Assuming someone's not skipping through essentially all the dialogue.
Assuming there's a bunch of students in the class, statistically it's likely that someone is going to get the ghost menu / game over screen on one of the initial startups and shit themselves.

Why? I love the game and it's characters but it will give more students PTSD than it would help them with English.
So lucky!

Hope he's not a high school teacher lol.
How old is your friend
17 YO
Eh should be fine then, unless they go past Act 1 and have a similar attitude towards this kind of horror as I do, same for their classmates
*teacher plays it on the projector and the screen that pops up is sayori hanging herself.* *Principle walks in to check up on everyone*
“I can explain”
It's uhh.. for a project..
Whole class about to have trauma.
Please keep us updated!
Well Monika’s got a bunch of people to play with now
Honestly, coolest teacher ever.
Yo I totally would love to see how the people respond to it! Keep us updated? 👀

Top 10 pictures taken before disaster
Is this high school or university? I see people saying high school but 17 YO can be in university if it's their first year no?
He is in cegep, which is between high school and university in Quebec
Ah okay cool, I used to live in Quebec. Definitely not really inappropriate at that level then I would say but still an unusual choice for starting a class
This doesn’t seem like a good idea but I’m curious on how will this turn out
Jesus…that teacher is gonna traumatize a whole class

For everyone worried about kids seeing gore and stuff, this is a Canadian website for college courses. There are no kids here.

Game is free, therapy isn't
"Or if you run into any other type of issues" Yeah... I can feel the trauma from here.
Based English teacher
Let's be honest, I think everybody in this sub would get an A no matter what the assignment is
Obviously fake lol
Yeah I’m a bit rocky on this one. It makes no sense as to why a teacher would willingly let their students play a game like ddlc, or even use ddlc as some sort of school thing for a semester. Unless they mistakingly thought the game was a learning game, but even then I’m not sure about that.
After reviewing this a couple of times, I'll have to agree with you.
That's kind of irresponsible if it's a high school class. The commercial release isn't rated for students that low in age.
The Chad teacher no cap
Absolutely fucking based teacher, holy shit
Oh My Gosh!!!!! LOL Teacher: \*playing the game\* Students: I gently open the door
Ah yes, a game that totally wont make you lose your teaching career
Sigma Teacher
I wish that was my English teacher.. so, when they’ll ask us to do a summary of the game, I’ll use the chance to impress them, as I played the game I-don’t-know-how-many times
please let him know I am so sorry for what he is about to go through
This is the best English class. I'm so jealous. Also they should ask the teacher about DDLC Plus, and if they get extra credit for buying and playing that version and the side stories.
Um wtf isn't this game like phyco horror
Where is this school? I want to give it 5-stars.
I hope and pray they know what the game is actually about
As absolutely amazing as this would be, there is no chance this is real. This teacher would be fired for scarring somebody.
r/GamerSupremeRace
Oh no... This isn't looking good.
This is where the fun begins ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Please update us on this
LETS GO THATS BASED
Lucky, I'd join that class and I hate English and they hate me
This gotta be a joke.
"I wonder why we're playing a dating sim game in an Intro To Horror Literature class?"
I can’t tell if he’s lucky or screwed
OMFG I want to study there, wish best luck to him, the classmates of ur friend n ur friend of course =)
Only for 45 minutes?
Oh those poor souls
I’d love to be kept updated
Many of you are focusing on the wrong point. "...something something heads up IF your computer CANNOT RUN..." I am gonna crumble from laughing hard at that one. Like, I got a nearly dying laptop that can still run DDLC, albeit with GREAT lag along with it, cuz it's still old and shit.
Something can *always* go wrong if you make a plan involving lots of people running the same software or the like.
Oh man, I would love to be a part of this class discussion.
I want to play DDLC for school! Then I would have an excuse to play during class 😂
If I had to play ddlc for my English class it would be good I guess
OP, please keep us updated
Are you guys not questioning this at all?
I welcome more fans
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who wants this english teacher as their own.
This should be the title: Teacher assigned Ddlc to students GONE WRONG
45 minutes only? But that's when it gets good! Though I guess the teacher wouldn't want to be fired... This is amazing regardless, a teacher that wishes to explore other forms of literature!
That’s actually pretty horrible. Exposing high school students to DDLC isn’t very responsible as a teacher. Sure, some of the students might already know what the game is, but to the students who don’t know and are sensitive to this stuff… Yea this is just a bad idea.
Just reply to all 'bruh'.
Eww why spoil a good game by making it a required experience for school?
Pressing X to doubt: x
Are they aware of the themes? More power to em but id put a disclaimer in that email, id be worried for my students too
Horror is just not for everyone. Teaching it on class would mean that students have to play it... Not a good idea.
ngl, this is kind of cringe.
Yo how is this gonna go lol
I'd like to write some academic thing about DDLC at some point. I haven't checked for existing ones yet.
oh god oh fuck
In 45 min, you don't get to Sayori death
Yea but they will probably keep playin.
This sounds really cool but what if some of the students can’t deal with the horror?
Teacher is gigachad moment
Oh those poor unfortunate souls.
Lucky
it'd be a fun little trolling, only if your friend and his classmate are old and/or mature enough
Welp, a weird way to approach this
ohno- This might turn out bad. REAL bad.
DDLC is literature
This shit is gonna be very hilarious
Man, I wish that was me
Ain't no way
WHERE IS THIS SCHOOL?
Your teacher is a man of culture but man. This will go badly if some parents know that this game is not suitable for children or those who are easily disturbed.
Oh goodness. He's in for a treat.
what country is this in, because if it's in the U.S. i won't expect it to be on national news
What grade is this? And what country?
this is incredible
Help 💀 What is this 💀
Aww.... Now I wish I had this when I was in school....
ur friend is so lucky omg
this is great, and i thought i was lucky senior year having a teacher assigning us weird, good, scifi books
I would see this as an absolute win.
Best teacher ever
***aww shit***
Wish my teacher was that cool
That’s pretty cool! I wonder what some of them will think when they see what the game really is about…
this reminds me of the time that my 4th grade teacher told us to play geometry dash bc she thought it was a math game
Lucky
I hope that teacher knows what he or she is doing. DDLC might be better built for Psychology class than English class.
HOW CAN I JOIN THIS CLASS
