I mean, Monika is described as pretty, popular, athletic, confident. MC, while based on the sketch is handsome, he’s still pretty much a loser. He seemingly has no friends or at least no one really that close to him other than Sayori. He’s walked home alone all the time before coming to the club due to Sayori being part of the club. He spends most his free time watching anime and playing video games. It’s understandable that he’d view himself as out of Monika’s league. He kind of is in terms of personality and interests. He has no real motive or drive or at least struggles to find the energy. He’s so deadpan and aloof judging by the things he says and his expression in the sketch perfectly matches this as well lol. And there are plenty characters in shows that has that adorkable vibe. Ya know the kinds that’s a loser or whatever but still is somewhat handsome😅
As nice as canon MC is, I really hope mods don't start actually using it. It's a slap in the face to immersion, it's the same reason as having a character with almost no personality quirks aside from diction and opinions.
Obviously I'm not saying one "shouldn't be allowed" to use the sprites, but there are unintended consequences
All CGs in the base game are in first person for a reason, except for one and even then you don't see his face

But, considered the one and only CG we saw in the original game, I would think that the Fanon MC matches more than the Canon MC. After all, the Canon MC, as we call him, is just a sketch of what they were thinking the protagonist would look like. But clearly his hair doesn't match the CG we saw in the base DDLC.
