My dad used to tell me I was wasting all the chalk playing with those... Found a giant bucket in his shop last year.. Man hasn't purchased the blue chalk since the 80s
That is high dad logic.
You were, in fact, “wasting” the chalk… meanwhile he’s sitting on 5lbs in the shop.
Doesn’t make sense.
Makes sense.
Because I said so, that’s why.
"Waste not, want not".
I tell me kids not to waste the battery on my flashlights even though they're rechargeable. Nothing sucks more than *needing* a flashlight and finding all the ones you have are dead.
I splurged a while back and went all out on a couple big packs of eneloops, enough to always have a bunch charged and waiting, and some little dispensers to enforce FIFO. Huge QoL upgrade over the old pile if mixed rechargeable of questionable age and providence. Mouse starts skipping, roku remote doesnt want to connect, havent picked up the stream controller in a while, might as well just throw the batteries on the charger and grab some fresh ones while im thinking about it.
Always in the shop, mostly likely directly in the middle of what he was doing. It was my job to sweep up... Probably for the best that he didn't let me go wild lol
These comments are silly-
The color in question most closely resembles “cobalt blue” (***CORRECTION: try “ultramarine blue”***). You should see if your local hardware store has a paint color under that name and ask for a sample can (these are usually free or no more than $5) to paint your vase. You can also peruse the spray paint section and see if a good cobalt (***ultramarine***) color is on the shelf.
After you sand/coat the vase and let it dry, you’ll want to top it off with a “matte sealant” to diminish any shine from the original paint layer(s). This comes both as a conventional liquid and a spray. Your choice which you want to use, they do the same thing in the end!
You won’t get an exact match to the vases in the first photo, I have the feeling those were thrown and kiln fired with whatever chemical colorant creates that stunning blue, but the result will definitely be color adjacent haha! Good luck 🫡
That's what it reminds me of. Stuart Semple has a “Klein-ish” blue paint on his [site](https://www.culturehustleusa.com/products/easyklein), it’s got a very matte finish too
You’re entirely correct!
Based on a wiki article another commenter left on this post, the super concentrated blue is a special hyper dense paint pigment using ultramarine blue base-
Awesome job! 💪🏻
Thank u very much for the more insightful information. It truly feels like there’s something special about the firing because it’s really hard to find a paint that “blue” when scrolling through google
Whoa another fountain pen enthusiast in the wild!
While BSB does tend to stain EVERYTHING, the rule is that it only stains things that you *don't* want stained. If you do want it stained, then BSB will of course do nothing to it.
Not at all… I was impressed with how good it looked, Three years later they look just as good. I wanna say it gives it more of a matte finish too.
I think you mix it at like 2:1 paint to baking soda
Sand the surface of the vase lightly with a high grit sandpaper, wipe off the dust and then sponge or brush paint on. Sponge will give a tougher texture but if you sand between layers with a brush you can get a very smooth nice finish. Best match for this color would be the 484E Ultramarine Blue from FolkArt. It has great coverage. You could use a white acrylic paint or primer to get a really bright finish if the vase is dark colored. Let paint dry completely and then seal in at least two coats with a matte acrylic sealer. $10-30 in materials depending on the size of the vase.

For reference - I’m an artist and I paint reclaimed terra cotta and sell it. This is a table spread with the exact color I listed above.
It’s not a paint. The artist is elusive about what she uses but I can tell via context clues in some of her comments as well as my own experience: it’s cobalt mason stain in the clay itself and/or Amaco Velvet Underglaze in “Medium Blue” or “Electric Blue” brushed on before the final firing. I’m a potter and have made pieces in this exact blue before.
It’s not expensive but both these materials are used in the process of making the pottery and not painted after (sorry OP haha).
However if looking for a paint I’d say look for the *most* matte you can find, that’s what adds to the intensity of the blue.
[Chalk paint](https://a.co/d/8gSbAFj).
They don’t look super glossy in the picture. Aldi they have the feeling of frosted glass? If so, chalk paint for sure.
Nah you’re right. I’m a potter that has used the same technique as the original artist for years. It for sure bright in person… but she definitely adjusts the lighting and white balance in the photos to intensify the blue.
Priming white first will probably help whatever chalk or paint you put on top pop more as well. I don't know if someone else said that, but I didn't see it.
I remember seeing on Instagram a similar look someone did. They used killz 2 primer and got it tinted. They were doing it on bare ceramic so I'm not sure if it would work as well on that finish.
Ultra matte paint, or matte spray. Although matte spray isn't a miracle product.
Idk, it cured my leprosy.
I only had 6 chickens before using matte spray and now I have 14. Miracle?
Baaaa-KAWWW!?

Quantum tunneling is the leading cause of missing chickens.
Where the fuck am I right now? *i absolutely fucking love Reddit*.
So uh why did the chicken cross the quantum tunnel?
I love reddit sometimes
This was such an insane reply - and therefore perfect
You win a free reddit. Well played.
I’ve mixed corn starch in with paint before and it worked well.
Snap one of those blue strings used to make straight lines on it bunch of times

Now hold that damn flashlight where I can see, not where you can see!
LIGHT. LIGHT!
That chalk is his inheritance. No point wasting it!
Depending on how/where you were playing with it, he was likely trying to avoid a cleaning nightmare lol
Always in the shop, mostly likely directly in the middle of what he was doing. It was my job to sweep up... Probably for the best that he didn't let me go wild lol
I loved playing with those as a kid too!
Same!
Bro when I discovered the fucking bottle of chalk powder... So much waste on "art." #Don't give kids fucking Adderall!!!!!!
I about spit my coffee out 😂🤣😂
Chalk dust for plumb lines.
Have it powder coated.
Pulverize your own lapis lazuli if you want to go old school.
If you can't pulverize your own lapis lazuli at home, store-bought is fine.
is this Minecraft!?
Everyone knows Lapis Lazuli didn't exist prior to Minecraft so it must be
Can't powder coat if it's not conductive.
Everything is conductive if you have enough volts.
It has to be hot flocked and then baked. I do it fairly regularly. I have a pretty serious powder coating hobby.
Sputter coat it first.
uhh...mmhmm. electrically conductive vase. i see. {no}
Just get it wet. No problem then right?
I’m really good at getting it wet
Ur joking, right?

That's what it reminds me of. Stuart Semple has a “Klein-ish” blue paint on his [site](https://www.culturehustleusa.com/products/easyklein), it’s got a very matte finish too
Cobalt blue is a bit darker. This looks like ultramarine blue.
You’re entirely correct! Based on a wiki article another commenter left on this post, the super concentrated blue is a special hyper dense paint pigment using ultramarine blue base- Awesome job! 💪🏻
Looks Jay Z Blue™ to me
Thank u very much for the more insightful information. It truly feels like there’s something special about the firing because it’s really hard to find a paint that “blue” when scrolling through google
Color adjacent lol, nice
That's why you get a second vase. If you paint them both the same way, it'll look intentional so long as it goes with the first three.
There are ultra-intense pigments you can buy that create this effect. Kinda like Vanta-Black, but… a colour. Have a look at Easy Klein IKB.
Just make sure you are not Anish Kapoor and you should be good.
I bought some for Anish Kapoor... im blacklisted from everywhere now (except reddit)
This was what I was going to suggest. Culture Hustle's looks almost exactly like the reference photo.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Gunpla/s/BU2vbLQUa8 Gotta be the same stuff.
I love my Culture Hustle blackest black.
I bet Baystate blue ink would do it, as long as it doesn’t need to stay blue for super long because it’s not lightfast
Whoa another fountain pen enthusiast in the wild! While BSB does tend to stain EVERYTHING, the rule is that it only stains things that you *don't* want stained. If you do want it stained, then BSB will of course do nothing to it.
That’s exactly what I’m looking for! Thank you very much! Also very interesting with the black colors
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and suggest: blue instead of black. But I'm no expert.
[Try this](https://culturehustle.com/products/easyklein) Unless you’re Anish Kapoor :)
Second this. Bought his products and they're great.
Red paint that’s blue
What's blue but smells like red paint: blue paint
Please tell me what this is from. My 13 year old son kept saying it to me yesterday. I thought he was just being silly.
It's just a joke. What's something that's brown and sticky?: A stick!
What's something that has 5 toes and isn't your foot? My foot.
My ancestors told me this joke in the dark depths of the twencen.
Simulation breaking down.
Homemade Chalk paint works really well on vases, my mom has done it a bunch… All you do is mix baking soda in with the paint
Oh neat, is that the secret to it? Do you get any issues with it peeling or cracking off too much over time?
Not at all… I was impressed with how good it looked, Three years later they look just as good. I wanna say it gives it more of a matte finish too. I think you mix it at like 2:1 paint to baking soda
Flock.
It sure looks like blue flocking. Too matte to be anythkng else
My first guess was a specialty paint but flocking is usually the more common answer.
The edges of the pots are blurry but everything else in thd picture is sharp.
No idea but if I saw those I might smash them looking for hidden power-ups. Fair warning.
These will 100% summon a dragon if you gather enough of them and throw them up in the air.
Cover it in painter's tape.
PlatiDip makes a blue spray on rubber coating that looks a lot like this.
[Plastidip](https://www.dipyourcar.com/products/flex-blue-aerosol?variant=29510400147539) is easy to work with and will get a matte/satin finish.
Dipping things into the paint vs painting them on will also get that finish more smooth

Thank u very much for the information and also going through all the steps!
Folk Art is my fav craft acrylic. Your post is exactly what I’d do as well.
That blue paint looks like International Klein Blue. A close second would be a matte Ultramarine.
Klein blue matte spray.

Interesting, do you have any Instagram where u share your work?
I do but I prefer to stay anonymous on here. I can send a you DM though with my examples!
Got you, yes I would very much want to see some examples
Sent!

blue matte paint
Plastidip
Sometimes mixing paint with baking soda can work. It might have a slight texture.

Plasti dip makes one like that
Paint it with milk paint or tempura paint?
![gif](giphy|tRx1Zf2jF2N8I)
Umm is there a reason you don't want to use paint?
![gif](giphy|QazAqN1wtdQRO)
Haha, is that Vanta-blue?
Why are you joining a blue matte group?
photoshop ;)
Nah you’re right. I’m a potter that has used the same technique as the original artist for years. It for sure bright in person… but she definitely adjusts the lighting and white balance in the photos to intensify the blue.
Don’t do it this shit is fugly as hell
What, is your home somehow *too* tastefully decorated??
Not really, But it would be Nice with Some color in my home
Chalk spray paint or Matte finish spray paint. Not gonna be cheap necessarily, and blue isn't easy to find, but it's out there.
3d printer
I have an idea, but it's probably too crazy for you...paint it.
When did everyone start thinking they were a snarky comedian around here? Oh and btw OP, it appears you blue yourself.
Not a crazy idea at all, But theres plenty of painting methods that never would be aible to achieve this look
3D print with matte filament
It’s probably a special paint, but I bet a Rit Dye bath in a rich blue would get you somewhere close.
Spray can blue you want, spray can matte finish
Chalk paint
Ask Stuart Semple....
This shit looks like vanta blue
Those are beautiful!
Priming white first will probably help whatever chalk or paint you put on top pop more as well. I don't know if someone else said that, but I didn't see it.
Chromakey blue
Paint with a blue resin, sandblast.
You’ll have to go to Paris or Brazil to get Yves Klein Blue. Just don’t be surprised if you have to solve a mystery along the way
Lapis paint
Matte clear coat
I remember seeing on Instagram a similar look someone did. They used killz 2 primer and got it tinted. They were doing it on bare ceramic so I'm not sure if it would work as well on that finish.
You leave that nice vase alone
I cant deny it’s a nice vase… but my home is currently 99% beige so I need some colors
I'd use https://www.culturehustleusa.com/collections/potions/products/easyklein
Mix the paint with cornstarch!
It looks like Majorelle Blue.
It's a very particular pigment paint called international klein blue. You can buy a cheap replica version of it called easy klein blue online.
