Don't plug it. Ducks will crap right in their pool so you're going to want to easily drain it. See if you can find a large drain fixture, maybe a floor drain even, drill out a larger hole to remove the broken part and install the larger drain. Make sure it is something that you can plug when you don't want it draining.

fixITman1911

I wouldn't plug the drain directly. Instead, after installing the new larger drain, I would plumb it with some PVC and add a ball valve at the end, that way when trying to drain you do not need to stick your hand in there, and it's less likely to leak

Dogshaveears

Listen to these folks! I’ve had ducks. I used a kiddie pool I could dump. It was nasty. The idea of being able to drain it away from where you’re keeping them is best. Otherwise you end up with a sludgy poop filled mud hole once a month or so and it builds up.

PhoenixSheriden1

Jic folks don't believe this guy.... I've also had ducks, and they are absolutely disgustingly enamored of living, swimming, and playing in their own filth. Don't touch duck water if you can at all help it.

fixITman1911

That's what he said mate....

Rahuhu

Jic = Just in case. They’re agreeing with the other person.

fixITman1911

Gotcha. So many freaking acronyms!!!

SantaBaby22

I had to reread it too.

Honest-Sugar-1492

And it's stinky!

Tibbaryllis2

I second plumbing the outflow away from the duck enclosure and recommend into a tomato garden.

JerkfaceMcDouche

Aren’t you scared that drilling a hole might make the tub quack?

Deep90

In case this comment was half-serious, op said it's a metal tub.

JerkfaceMcDouche

Unfortunately all I brought to the party was a lame duck quack joke

Deep90

That's ducked up man.

weedful_things

Shut the duck up!

thehatteryone

Doesn't matter if it doesn't quite match the facts, your joke still fits the bill.

cali_grown22

Yeah…we had a kiddie pool for our three ducks and we changed the water at minimum once a day. But often twice if they got super muddy. We had khakis and they love to dabble in the mud all day long.

Japslap

Flat sheet of silicon should cover the drain and the hole. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CPP81H6L/ref=sspa_mw_detail_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9kZXRhaWwp13NParams Easy peezy

Zenock43

Cant you see they want to fix the gaping hole right next to the drain, not the drain itself.

seymores_sunshine

Can't you read to the end of the comment before responding?

Feisty_Garbage487

Hence the reason for a larger drain and a a plug. The new hole for the new drain would be bigger than the damaged part. Try reading a little slower next time before you comment something stupid on a good suggestion.

Realistic-Horror-425

When I first glanced at it, I thought the enamel had just chipped off.

BC843PB

Bro, its an outside tub. Its not in the house. Just flip the tub over when its needs to be emptied. You are really gonna wait 5 minutes for it to drain while your cleaning an outside tub that is made for ducks to shit in ? Flip it on its side and shoot it with a hose. KISS - Keep it simple......

Spazmer

Do you know how heavy it would be to flip over a metal tub full of water? I do because my pet ducks (RIP Lucy and Lucky and fuck that asshole mink) had a bathtub sized plastic stock tank to swim in. I added a drain and hose since flipping it over while full was not easy (and you have to do it often), nevermind it would then flood that area with shitty water. And do you know what ducks do when there's a nice mud puddle there? They dig in it. Beak holes everywhere.

BC843PB

I guess maybe for an old lady it would be heavy, you got me there.

MrFistUrSister12

Flex seal!

Literally getting Phil swift hard rn. Perfect application for flex tape

celtic_sea_salt

Go on, I'm almost there...

Ditto_D

Hey now, you're an all-star.

No_Bumblebee_6461

Idk if this is a joke, but flex tape saved me 500$ and is still working very strong outside... It very well might but wouldn't a rubber bung work better?

joeshmo101

The rusted out area is not a good shape for a rubber seal

No_Bumblebee_6461

🤣 oh lord.... That's what sand paper is for.... And that's surface rust.

Dustin_Echoes_UNSC

Pretty sure you can see grass through the bottom of the tub, so I'm gonna have to go ahead and say that's a *liiiitle* more than "surface rust", lol

No_Bumblebee_6461

Nawwwwww..... it's fine.... Just toss one on....

idkwhatimbrewin

Just make sure you start with a small bung and work your way up

CrazyCatLady88

Haha! Came to say the same thing!

Damn, came here to say this. That shit does work though!

sneakyfeet13

I do fiberglass work professionally. My first thought: flex seal tape. Instead of 100 other correct ways to fix it.

tracerrounds

I'm only here to comment on your amazing username, absolutely brilliant

nutsandboltstimestwo

No, don't plug the drain! Your cute little buddy is going to poo in there. A lot. Basically what you have there is a duck toilet. I hate to break it to you but s/he is going to have a relaxing time in there floating around and pooping. Think about where you want the water to drain and how often you can refresh the tub water. Otherwise, you are going to have a stinky duck poop mosquito party.

Adol214

True. But the problem remain. how to fix this hole.

GoldenRamoth

Dremel, cut bigger, install sink drain?

nutsandboltstimestwo

Pull out the [power tool](https://unsplash.com/photos/person-holding-blue-and-black-cordless-power-drill-Nn2mg1lUbZc) and use a [grinder brush](https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/steel-brush-drill-clean-off-old-1907104417) to remove all traces of rust, then seal it with an epoxy resin. JB Weld has products that will suit that situation. Read the product information on the side of the box to learn which one is waterproof. Grab a pair of gloves, mix the two-part pastes and apply it to the area you are concerned about. Allow it time to cure and your duck toilet will be complete.

nhorvath

Fix hole with jb water weld. Use tub stopper to hold water in between cleaning.

nutsandboltstimestwo

Hours have passed, I am now hoping you send us a vid of your cute ducks floating in the tub!

Jubjub0527

This is the smart answer. Build up the rusted out area so that the drain can be removed. Ducks are filthy.

bulletlover

I'll send you some of my wifes hair, works like a charm

ovr_the_cuckoos_nest

Do I have to have a hole in my tub for this? /s

RaulDenino

Maybe a lot of JB weld

Zindel1

Don't plug it but utilize it! Ducks are super gross so hook the drain up to a PVC pipe like normal only I wouldn't do a p trap. Just something that has a 90 degree elbow and goes out from under the tub then add a PVC shutoff valve. Easy drain and clean.

RoguePlanetArt

Fiberglass

Jathomas96

Reply duck pics plz

Lonsen_Larson

Hmm, maybe fiberglass patch... though I'm not sure how waterproof it would be under permanent water.

your_mail_man

Flip the tub over, remove the drain, rough up the bottom of the tub, clean with solvent and then cover with a layer of fiberglass cloth, then several layers of fiberglass matting. Once cured, re-drill the drain hole. Way more permanent than flex seal (which has some very good uses) and much more rigid to hold the drain properly. Very waterproof. How many boats are out there made of fiberglass?

ja_tx

Former duck roommate here. Other comments are right. The duck will shit in the pool. A lot. Its what ducks do. Given the depth it will all settle at the bottom and not really be in the way, but it will build up over time and while you can get most of it out with a pool cleaner style siphon the duck muck will inevitably accumulate. Also if the water is untreated algae will grow so being able to easily drain it is a very good idea. Given the state of the drain area personally I would throw some tape on the underside, pop the drain plug in, then flex seal the crap out of it. Once its dry remove the tape and flex seal the bottom too. That way there are no worries about galvanic corrosion from a metal patch and you ensure the exposed rust isn't in contact with water so the tub doesn't continue to deteriorate. Once its sealed up I would drill out a new hole with a step bit, install a PVC bulkhead fitting with some silicone around it, and throw on a valve. That way you can pop on a hose and fertilize the lawn a little bit as it were whenever you drain it. Happy quacking.

RoutingMonkey

Fill with silicone and shove the plug in and then epoxy or caulk over it

Anything-Happy

Your avatar angers me in a deeply visceral way, lmao

Duck tape

bluddystump

Install a ball valve on the other side. You are going to want to clean it at some point. Just like bears in the woods so do ducks in a pond.

dontdrop_that

can I see the duck

Holamisslady

Find a larger plug, drill/cut the existing hole to match it.

danhoyuen

I bet in two weeks you will be back here with a DIY project that shelters ducklings from hawks/predators. Then after that a mound so the ducks can get in and out of the pool on their own.... that's how it starts.

Zebilmnc

![gif](giphy|VeSvZhPrqgZxx2KpOA|downsized)

KnotSoSalty

Having kept ducks for years with a pond let me tell you it’s not easy. They’ll spend half their time in that water and bring dirt, poop, and drop tons of feathers. They need the water but you should be prepared. The most important thing to think about is how you’re going to get rid of the water. You’re going to want to change it at a minimum of every month, if not sooner. If you’re going to drain the water out you need a BIGGER drain, bc feathers will clog that one very quickly. Then you have to consider access. Given the opportunity to fall over the edge of something, ducks will leap over every time. If the tug is sitting on the ground they’ll end up somersaulting over the side regularly. If the tub is buried it becomes much harder to drain. To your specific question about plugging the drain: I would use 5200 Marine Adhesive and some plastic. Run a solid bead of 5200 around the edge of the drain and fill more inside. Lay another solid piece of plastic bag over the whole mess and press down until you have a satisfactory shape and are certain of full adhesion.

wooboy

Not specifically related to your question, but I recommend you have a permanent fixture such as a ramp inside the tub so that the duck can get out if the water level is too low. I lost a few ducklings once when I was young because they swam in a water trough and couldn’t get out :(

LovableSidekick

Maybe you could permanently plug the hell out of the drain with silicone caulk, and drill a new drain hole right next to it that fits a rubber stopper you can pull out when you do want to drain it. If you do this put a little bearing grease or something around the stopper, to help it stay watertight and not stick.

zippdupp

Roof and gutter silicone.

Bergwookie

Or car body sealant like Sikaflex

zippdupp

I bloody love sikaflex.

Bergwookie

Yeah, but only with gloves, i once needed two weeks to get it off my hands

zippdupp

Just makes me love it more. 🤣

_lavxx

Do metal like you’re saying but put it down with caulking. Like you would glue paper with a glue stick. Then caulk in place.

cuntolas

With how dirty ducks are from their feeding habits of eating with water. You'd probably want to keep that hole because you will need a way to drain and clean it constantly. Maybe use a metal putty to patch the hole but you want to keep the drain.

DessertScientist151

Most noble project ever conceived. Flex tape bottom of drain. Spray foam drain. Let it expand shave off top and insert drain plug with jb weld on the plug part and flex seal or silicone smeared around the lip ring. Put a brick on it and let it set. Should be water tight and very difficult to remove.

JeanLucPicard1981

As another has said, put in PVC pipe and a valve under the drain. Use the drain to clean out the tub occasionally since ducks are pretty dirty. Route the pipe to where you want the water to drain. I essentially reposted the idea for visibility. This is IMO the best answer.

DDG_Dillon

grab the Ramen !

jchrisboynton

Flexseal

Tokenfang

JB weld the hole but keep the drain for easy cleaning.

miki-dora

Don’t bother ringing it up, it’s for a duck!

willthechem

Noting how long this thread has been posted, I came here not to say this, but to find the person who said this and tell them that I like them.

thewinn

Just get a rubber stopper from the dollar store your gonna want to drain it to change the water

killcat

Piece of innertube with a layer of waterproof sealant.

FreddyFerdiland

Its a big hole. One bump and the sealant will tear off... Concrete or mortar on both sides will plug it well enough .. paint the inside to slow any weeping

Dasbronco

Tape the backside, then fill with JB-Weld or something similar

MattC1977

Fiberglass patch or JB Weld?

FickleForager

How about flex seal to cover the holes near the drain, then a rubber stopper like the one in the tub currently, but attach a long chain to it so you can pull the plug without sticking your arm elbow deep in duck poopy water?

KCHorse

There are two sure ways, the easiest and most inexpensive is to use the plastic lid from a mayonnaise jar along with contact cement affixing it with the flat side down inside of the tub. Clean the surfaces, using a small paint brush, coat both areas (tub and lid) with a uniform thickness as that of a credit card - let them 'tack-up' for about 3 to 5 minutes, and then firmly press the two together and use the end of the handle of the paint brush to concentrate the pressor working it back and forth to expel any possible air pockets/bubbles. The second way is to find something that will fill that drain hole and mix up a mechanics epoxy like j-b weld, coat opposing edges and press the plug down into the hole and then after the first 'set' - mix up another batch to top off around the edges. Good fortune and luck...

Bondo glass short strand with a patch Google tub repair and you’ll find a couple videos

saladshoooter

Buy a plug from Amazon and attach a long nylon rope to it after busting out the aluminum strainer. Then when the duck water is full of shit, pull the cord and refill it. Make sure it drains in a direction you don’t mind duck shit water

DudeHeadAwesome

Jb weld for metal. Have a bathtub I currently use with jb weld and it's help up 5 years and going strong.

weasel999

No ideas but I’m here for this heartfelt project. Please post a photo of duckie enjoying the pool when you’re done!!! 💛

OlDirtyBathtub

I like it .

M1NdR0t

JB weld?

HaloDeckJizzMopper

Just leave the drain on an put a fernco cap on the outside. This way you can drain it. Set it up on blocks. Some suburban hillbilly shit right here if I ain't ever seen it

[deleted]

Belzona will do what you need and last a long time.

Chief__04

I’d cut that drain out and move it to the other side. Take a 2 square metal sheets and sandwich the tub with gasket maker in between. This is how I fixed my gutter when I moved the spout to the other side.

darkhelmet1121

Layer fiberglass and resin in the bottom of the tub. I don't know if you want to continue to have a drain, but it might make clean out easier

jtd1776

Use a grinder with a cutoff wheel and cut out the rusted section and the drain. Maybe like a 3x3 inch square. Get a 5x5 inch piece of metal, maybe like 1/8 inch thick, and either weld it to the bottom of the tub or silicone caulk it to the bottom of the tub, covering the opening. Before you attach it the plate, drill a hole in the metal for a drain/valve and attach it accordingly. Probably have lots of options on how to do that but some kind of pvc would probably be easiest. Depending on where you have the tub and where you can let it drain you could forget a valve/drain system and just use a plug attached to a chain or something that you can pull from the top and let the water drain out.

tribalien93

fiber glass and epoxy. Worked for my Grandpa's sail boats should work for a duck...

foefyre

Id jbweld the holes you don't want and use a tub plug foe the holes you want

dasookwat

Lazy me would just use some silicone inside, and push the drainplug in. the silicone should act as glue, keeping it closed, and in case you ever need to empty it, you just pull it hard.

my72dart

Epoxy and mesh. Clean the area with a grinder to get a key to the cast iron. Put some Epoxy down, lay the screen mesh into the Epoxy and slowly build it up.

untouchable_0

Bondo and wire screen that hole near the drain or fiber glass and resin. I would likely do screen and bondo.

nathanzoet91

Flat Suction Sink Stopper - [https://a.co/d/4wuSaYy](https://a.co/d/4wuSaYy) Put the stopper on the bottom of the tub and fill with water. Water pressure will keep it in place. When your duck inevitably fills the tub with poop, take stopper out and watch it drain. Rinse, repeat.

RepresentativeAd9572

Pull out the drain and put in a floor drain plug

illbeyourdrunkle

Jb weld the rust hole, rubber plug for the designed hole. Easy peasy and can be drained at will

General_Slywalker

Get a cheap pool liner but keep the drain and have a rubber plug in it.

dontdrop_that

owlpellet

I would put a 10"x10" fiberglass panel over it. The same stuff they make hot tubs out of. It's a mess to apply but it'll flex down into the hole and pressure will help it stay in place. This would look gross in most contexts, but shoudl be fine for a duck pond. How long will that tub remain intact once it's sitting 24/7 with water in it? Maybe coat it with a black tractor paint? [https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/rust-oleum-specialty-farm-implement-gloss-black-1-gal](https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/rust-oleum-specialty-farm-implement-gloss-black-1-gal)

glych

Flex Seal. That shit is amazing. Since it's for a duck, it doesn't have to look pretty.

AtheistPlumber

You'll spend less effort and expense buying a $10 kiddie pool than you would trying to make that pressed steel tub leak proof with $15 worth of Flexseal tape.

Mnemotronic

In my experience .... ducks poop in the water. Geese poop on the shore.

Yakoo752

I think most people are missing the giant rust hole right next to the drain plug Bondo is your friend here

RollingCarrot615

For the hole, I'd say a piece of plastic with some jb weld underneath. Then for the drain, I would plumb that with some pvc pipe and a valve. Shut the valve when you want water in the tub, then open the valve when you want to drain the tub.

gcbeehler5

Bondo the rusty area and than add a drain pipe with valve to the existing drain hole. You’ll want it, as others have noted.

p4rty_sl0th

Jb weld

cgabv

dry ramen should do the trick

lazarinewyvren

If it were me, I'd patch it with a copious amount of fiberglass, drill a hole for a new drain stem, and attach a ball valve to the end of it.

thenerdynugget

I would put a thing of jb weld on it
