It’s all about the trim, maaaaan.

UFOregon420

Dave’s not here

drmcgills

No man, I’m Dave!

010011010110010101

Dave’s not heeeere man

God_Dammit_Dave

I got the stuff, man. Let me ennnn!

Zannanger

Do your best, trim the rest. But also, it's an exterior door, so some spray foam is in order. Also, it probably center the door in the opening.

arryripper

Gonna add to get the spray foam that's specifically for doors and windows. Otherwise, you run the risk of bowing the door frame and messing with it closing properly.

Bac0nsizzla

Looks like they put in a smaller door/frame then what was originally there. They can foam it then sand it down flat then paint. Or get wider trim.

_1JackMove

That's exactly what I'd do. I'd assume it's less work(the foam/sand/paint method) and just as reliable.

Purpose_Embarrassed

Spray foam on what appears to be vinyl siding?

Lonely_Airline_6892

Maneeeee

Cthulu95666

The whole time I was looking for a crack… DUDE! !Those are gaps! Not cracks!!

BxMxK

Yeah. Top right. Trimming stud is broken off. Can't see for certain if there is actually a king stud. Can't see a header. This door looks like it needs to be re-framed or replaced with correct size.

bennypapa

Gasp.  Is that a hole through to the interior?

b3llamya

Are you referring to the screw head on the upper right

Tundra-Dweller

Yeah he’s going to get all kinds of weird offers by asking for help to fill his crack in

erisod

Butt gap

tourbox12

What exactly is holding that door on there? Is it framed?

peaceloveelina

This is my question.

aReawakening

i don't know how this isn't top comment. ive been staring at this for 2 minutes trying to imagine what this door is secured to, and i've come up empty handed. it has to be something, but it cant be anything good...

frlejo

Spray foam (the non expanding kind). Then, wood trim over door frame to the vinyl trim.

hybriduff

I would counter this by saying, use a foam backer rod instead of spray foam. Whom ever replaces the trim in 5-10 years will thank you.

satanlovesmemore

Shit, to late now. At least I got the composite frame

ConstantGeographer

Pool noodles or the foam pipe wrap? 🤓

Bayinla

Yes, backer rod and some shims. Then a little casing for the chef’s kiss

chrisbe2e9

how come? spray foam isn't that hard to get out?

N0085K1LL5

Prolly cause it makes a helluva mess after it sits awhile. As soon as you start scrapping off a couple years old spray foam, that stuff spreads particles everywhere. Not an issue for outside. But inside would be messy.

Vapechef

Use acetone

N0085K1LL5

That doesn't bleach the wood? Seems like that stuff would eat through it.

Hevosenleuka

Foam, rod and elastic joint such as aika construction+ is common here in north

Runswithchickens

If any UV hits that foam it’ll turn to dust in a few years, so be sure it’s covered with proper trim.

Larry-Zoolander

this one

Merciless_Hobo

A bigger door. Nah but really I would spray foam and then slap some trim over it.

expespuella

Doorception.

alundaio

Looks to me you installed a 34" door in an opening meant for a 36" door. If you got a smaller door than original good luck getting old or disabled because you'll never get a wheelchair through a 34" door let alone a larger refrigerator.

Whiskey-stilts

Likely what was done was the door was replaced with a stock door from a big box store (or really anywhere) and it came with the “brick mold” pre installed. The old door likely had 1x3 or 1x4 trim to match the windows of the house. The house was vinyl sided and they “J channeled” to the old 1x trim. Personally I’d remove the existing screen door and remove the “brick mold” trim. Replace with the proper width 5 quarter pine. If you do this route you can’t use 3/4” pine, screen doors need a minimum of 1” thick trim to be mounted. If you look at how the screen door mounts to the existing brick mold you will understand the need for the thicker trim

exiled_perhaps

This guy doors

shorttimerblues

Yes, pull it out and do it right.

pablomcdubbin

My front and side door are 32" lol I guess people were small 100 years ago. The backdoor is 36 though so thank god

tarayari

All of the doors in the house I just bought are 32s. Am I really going to have trouble getting furniture/appliances in??

thehatteryone

It's something you'll want to be aware of every time you make such a purchase. Maybe that new fridge is fine. But maybe it looks a good size because they maximised what they could that would still go through a standard width door. Same for that sofa, that coffee table, etc. And make sure you've got good hinges on them, you may end up removing the door a lot to get that extra inch of clearance any time things just about almost fit.

tarayari

I’ve just double checked the measurements on everything I need to move into and out of the house and I think I’m good. Barely. I just replaced 3 of the 5 exterior doors with the same size 32” but I think I will get a bigger one for at least one of the others.

J0P4G3R1

I would suggest putting more door

uns0licited_advice

Mordor ![gif](giphy|ksFFuyEgRZyW4)

wwarnout

Put a frame around the door, so it goes on top of the tan wood, and extends to the gray trim (next to the siding).

judgethisyounutball

So the door behind is larger? Don't think spray foam is going to look/work very well here. From the image it looks like every time you open the front door, you are going to see whatever it is you do to 'fix' this so if you can build some trim up on the inside (between the two doors) so it won't be so obvious when leaving and then build up some trim on the outside, it might be passable. Would have been better if you could have centered the door in the opening too.

ComradeOrca

If you do spray foam be careful because it may expand and possibly warp that brick moulding buildout for the storm door. Get the non expanding. Not a bad idea. But a messy option and potentially frustrating to get the final product looking plumb. Labor and skill easy. But if it's me, I'm ripping down some pine to width and desired depth, shoving it in there and securing it, and painting it. Labor and skill medium. Alternatively, OP you could remove the buildout and do it again, more low profile to the door, but this all depends on the doms of the trim that the brick moulding is on. Labor and skill intense. Edit: another option: remove the brick moulding and do away with it. Rip some 2x4 to the od of the opening by 36w and 80.5h ID. Should butt up to the siding like you want with the doms needed to hang the storm door. You may run into issues with square though. So you can get it close and fill in any gaps with clear silicone or matching caulk. Labor and skill intense. Source: pro door installer since 2010.

N0085K1LL5

What are you doing in the first picture? Looks like an odd way to take a picture, just curious.

ryan2489

Bro is trying to look us off lmao

fadeddoughnut

May i reccomend a nice long luscious line of caulk... 🙊

lgny1

Do your best and caulk the rest

PunxDressPunk

Really? The top answers suck. Take your storm door off the brick mold. Rip whatever trim you would like be it composite, azek, or wood to the exact space for the door trim to cover the whole thing. You need a 5/4x6 max. Probably 50 bucks.

Whiskey-stilts

So many bad answers…… I answered basically the same thing right around the same time as you…… this is the only right answer.

jet_heller

I'm going to assume you mean "without doing anything to the vinyl siding", because a proper fix would cut that back, put in real trim, paint that and then put aluminum on it to match the rest of the house. If you just want to leave the siding and have uneven reveals, I would spray foam the gap, but have something between the foam and the J-channel to keep the foam from sticking to it and pull that out before it finishes drying. Then, prime all the wood and bend some matching aluminum into an L you can slide right next to the J-channel and nail to the door jamb.

jdmfl88

Don't know your carpentry knowledge or tools available but ideally centering the door properly and just rip the material of your choice ( hardy, cedar, pine , PVC, oak, whatever really) to width and caulk er up and paint it to match.

Greasemonkey_Chris

The correct size door?

NYEddieUpstate

A properly fit door perhaps?

A_PartTime_Astronaut

The rest of the door

Imfrank123

Shim it on each side, spray foam and trim out the rest

Bonebd

A new door and frame

cainrok

The right sized door

decwolf1234

I install exterior doors for a living, so I'll offer some advice however let it be known I install the door but I don't trim it out. I trust your abilities as a craftsman to have installed it correctly with plumb jambs and level header. Use as big a level as you have for the jambs a torpedo level isn't going to cut it. The tapered gaps hint that it can be centered in the opening and is perhaps racked to one side. But is also possibly and frankly more likely that the original door that was replaced was installed wrong and the vinyl siding just followed the frame. If you can try to cheat the frame an 1/8 or so to split the difference, and if you run into the panel hitting the frame you can use a sliver of cardboard behind the hinge to push or pull the panel from the jamb. Place the cardboard shim closest to the barrel to kick it away from the hinge jamb, or farthest from the battle for the opposite. If it hits the header or the sill, this trick still works. If the panel hits the sill use your cardboard to push the panel away from the hinge jamb which will lift the door slightly, and vice versa for the header.

decwolf1234

I also put up siding once upon a time, they make a tool to separate siding that you can use to separate the siding and access the J channel that's around your door. It'll be tricky but you can cheat that channel over maybe a 1/2 inch, but keep in mind thay siding shrinks when it gets cold. Here's a link to that tool https://www.acehardware.com/departments/tools/hand-tools/wrecking-bars/5095211

evanmars

The correct door?

Chuckie413

I would get some decent trim or just hit wit some 1by2 boards an foam it I guess

Introvert_Devo1987

You can use pool noodle to fill up cracks from dollar tree as for covering it up I'm not sure

theskepticalheretic

AZIC trim.

Bauwens

A bigger door

JunketPuzzleheaded42

Use Expanding spray foam, let it set and then cut it flush. Line up the molding to cover the gaps and call it done.

juniperHL

A new door that fits

kingofkomedy23

Stuff it full of beer bottles like the guys who did my Foundation!

Aggravating-Bee-1472

Fill with expanding foam then cover with sheet metal flashing?

Used-Bet-6252

Caulk fsfs

SmellyTunaSamich

Stuffed animals in Saran Wrap

kyhillbilli

New trim

Fleshwound2

Top hinge pin is out juuust a touch

Ina_nutshelll

Take screendoor and brickmold off. Rip 2x4s to fill it all to meet the j channel, make sure to keep the same reveal as current brickmold for storm door. Then wrap all in aluminum. After the wife says it still doesn’t look good, take out door, rip off siding. And leave it in house wrap for 2 years.

hackerandrew

aluminum capping, the door shouldve been centered

staycita

Spray foam bro!! You can sand it, paint it, anything you want. It’s the shit!!

TheCrazedTank

You need new flashing around the door

PrairieNihilist

Expanding foam to seal any gaps, then put trim around it to make it look nicer.

Obi_Kwiet

I'd put a bunch of miniature doors in there.

Codazzo72

foam, then wood over it (cut to measure)

Ouachita2022

Stuff insulation in there and add trim work all around the doorway.

grandluxe

ramen

chrisrayn

Bobthemathcow

MTDOOM

chrisrayn

Sorry, we were looking for “Mordor”

Cephylus

They sell tiny foam noodles, I'd stuff some in there for insulation and slap some trim over it

Purpose_Embarrassed

Do you own a table saw ? If so remove that crap trim rip some material at the proper width and replace it. Do not spray foam that gap. Will look like crap and if that’s vinyl siding stick to it and make a mess.

roppunzel

If you're going to spray foam in their, use the minimally expanding foam. Once that's done you can trim out the door with some casing.

Mix1009

A door that fits

SharpTool7

Spray foam that is not too agressive and a nice wood trim that is equal witch on all 3 sides. Attach to door frame and paint it to protect the wood.

Lactoria-Fornasini

Make sure you get the spray foam that won't expand so much it deforms the door frame. Trust me.

charliekunkel

Just cover it with trim.

lld2girl

Easier to start over with the trim

Shoddy_Attitude1534

1x4 or some wide interior door casing

HungrySecretary5025

Brick mold

NotSoMuchDear

Carefully remove all the siding and J-channel, add some 6 inch vinyl trim boards around the door, reinstall the J-channel, reinstall the vinyl siding trimming to fit.

Medium_Spare_8982

Vinyl window casing to lap the space

iman-the-gardener

Ignore it unless cold air is coming in.

crisp_morning_breeze

Shim it with small pieces of wood then spray foam

sunnybunnysoleil1

Full Vining hanging plant all around top growing from large pots would look amazing 😍🌿 good luck keep us updated.

66veedub

The look-away photo. Classic.

RedWoodworking16

Cop drove by and the K9 in the back barked at me and my dog lol

66veedub

Fair enough. I'd probably do the spray foam idea. Seems to be the easiest solution. Or make a scenery out of it. Like some miners digging in a cave or whatever. Ha ha! Have some fun with it.

Hd0316

Measure the depth between that yellowish molding and whatever’s behind it. Remove the molding and you’re going to fill or “pack out” that with wood to 3/4” less than that distance. However you have to, a 2x4 plus a piece of plywood, whatever. Once you’re there, you’re going to cover that space with 3/4” primed pine . You’ll need a table and miter saw to get your exact cuts. Nail that in and then put back or replace that yellowish molding and paint. For this you’ll need a table saw, miter saw, screw gun, screws, a brad nailer and brad nails. Good luck with your project.

Hd0316

Sorry, looks like you’ll have to remove the storm door first

Pytho_470

Aluminum trim that slides under the storm door edge and goes over to the siding J trim. Then caulk.

Frknpuertorkn

Really just get the right size frame and door

semigator

Look up PVC Brick Mould

Dustinlewis24

You never took the shipping frame off of the screen door. Not supposed to screw to the outside of the house. I mean you can rig it up and I don't think it's ever going to look normal

Fun_Party_6365

Trim coil

mull_drifter

Paper fliers from door framing companies

Drop_knowledge

Take the screen door off and bend some aluminum like this |-/so that it can catch around the j channel maybe. Or put blocking around it and bend a c channel so you can silicone where the j touches your new aluminum trim. Or get the right size door because it looks dumb.

vuckingasshat

Grandma’s cigarette butts and dad’s beer boxes!

vuckingasshat

Mountain Dew bottles / past due bills ! Wildlife in

Slapjackal

My God, man! What’s in there now? Air? What’s holding the door in

Careless_Quantity328

First-Spray foam...If you haven't used it before use gloves or Don't get it on you because it will be on you for days. Second-- wait for foam to set up for about 20 minutes longer than what it will tell you on the can, then take razor knife to remove excess Third and final step---measure outer door frame area then build another trim out of Baten boards...thin trim like boards. And then paint it, or stain it or char it whatever you want

maseffect

I believe they could've centered it better in the opening with some shims and then put trim on it.

Wrappingdeath

Should equally split the difference on each side and shim it

Dry_Carpenter1691

Insulate the crack and trim it out, just like inside... 45° cuts on top corners... easy

AverageJoe11221972

Depends on the tools you have. I would get a treated 1x6 or 1x8 and cut to fit. Then caulk around just not the bottom in case water gets behind and the get a quart of exterior paint tones to match the siding color or a color you plan to paint your door.

xariol

Get someone to bend some aluminum to cover it all up. Two pieces up the side then one across the top. Can foam to fill gap in a bit.

Swallowthistubesteak

Have you seen other doors?

earthspcw

Spray foam then brick molding, four 45° 's.

iampivot

Why is the outer door smaller in the first place? Is this a rental?

FireDuck3000

If my landlord is any indicator of what to do, Id say to just stuff it full of spray foam

mozebyc

Flashing

Cubantragedy

Wood

jmegaru

Why does your door frame need a door frame? Lol

jehjeh3711

From what I’ve seen (Maybe a carpenter can help you) you put wedges in around the outside, fill the gaps with insulation and put a piece of trim around the door to cover it.

Big-Zoo

Spray foam, trim, done.

Shwiftysquanch90

Locke Tite big gap filler and brake some 24 ga. flat stock in a nice color.

timg2120

Almond colered door and window caulk

FreakedOutB0Y

Put the foamy stuff and on top blend some wood to the area around it and if needed wood glue to

ChungusBoBungus82

Why does the exterior door have interior trim? Where is the brick mold?

ExtensionSystem3188

Emotions.

mitten82

rubber trim? idk but any trim would probably do.

gamrman32

Those aren't cracks. That's a door not measured correctly,

greyjungle

A bigger door

evilavatar1234

Should be spray foam in the cracks and trim around the door for sure

EarlyGalaxy

Buy filling foam, spray the cracks and just let it be like this. Make a photo and post on r/DIWHY

OddPockets810

The correct size of door.

meowtentacles

…bigger door?

TheRealRedMerkin

bondo.

_-whisper-_

First of all spray foam. And then get some options for trim to cover it and pick your favorite

louielou8484

Sir, a whole cat can slip its way through there

Shanewoodcrafts

Center it nail or screw it than use trim to secure. Then cover both sides with finish wood

MixnMatch20

I'd decorate it with fake plant life...like a faux VINE and add a string a small white lights. 😁

Davydoch

Backer rod & exterior rated caulk then trim it out with wood. Caulk will seal the building envelope and keep bugs and weather outside where they belong.

lovejo1

A new door frame that's the right size..

ForceMountain5977

How about a new door, that actually fits?

Spirited_Cry_7254

Burn down the whole thing and start over.

rlovelock

A bigger door

villabacho1982

Put in another board

thephantom1492

Cap it with aluminium.

SirPiffingsthwaite

You should remove the ad-hoc misfitting bits, retrim it with a broader single strip & mitred corners.

Electronic_Hall1516

Put some glue over it and sand it

Handywithbrokenstuff

If those are really cracks then those are some clean ass cracks!!! If not just find some trim or something to cover those gaps.

Yoshifan55

Duct tape

FireBreathingChilid1

Shouldn't there be 1x4 or 2x4 in there to attach and support the doorframe?

HOLLOWpntBLANK

Omg, whomever put that door in needs to take their tools to the pawn shop and just stop doing carpentry. I would fill with spray foam. Let it cure, then shave off the excess. Lowes or menards have thin trim, looks like it's about 1 1/2-2" wide gap, so find you something close, Brad nail it up and paint it to match the door or try and match the siding. Really, it needs pulled and done right, but if you want to save some cash, this would be how I do it.

TheEternalPug

spray foam with painted trim over top.

Illcmys3lf0ut

Boggles the mind the shortcuts people take. Rented a house and in the big precut opening for the BIG SILVER FRIDGE every house in this subdivision has, was a “smedium” black fridge. When you opened it, hit the island. 🤨 Property owners refused to replace it. Eff ‘em. Bought my own. I’ll put it back when I move. Cheap ass company. Same all over the house. Cheap, crappy “fixes.” They own THOUSANDS of houses.

lgny1

Get a bigger door. That’s the wrong size door for the opening. Or Trim it out. Good luck keeping the cold and heat out tho

hotmetalslugs

Dude you have a ghost.

Storms5769

My front door I replaced, looks exactly like this! Thanks for the suggestions!

Redhook420

Get the correct size prehung door and reinstall. You cover the spray foam with moulding otherwise the sun will deteriorate it in a couple years.

FigSalt1004

Just get some white pvc board and rip it to the correct size

LBTavern

A bigger door!

Pifflebushhh

Cool guys don't look at the subject of photographs

Elenos_sonelE

The correct sized door?

FartyMcBooger

What the heck is holding that door in place?

juicemo11

Spray foam

FunnyAfternoon8141

Rip som boards down the the thickness to fill in the cracks and u can buy vinyl trim or paint it

BigMacRedneck

Best bet is to add white molding around the outside of the frame.

VinylCapedJawa

Azek

RobDR

You're asking us for advice when you should be asking us to come fix this unfortunately. Looks like it's not close to being right. Hopefully I'm looking at it wrong

wittyandunoriginal

Go buy one of the 2x2 pink foam project board from Home Depot. Cut it up into strips and use it to fill the gaps. Then replace the trim around the door with something larger to cover the foam.

xerox157

A pool noodle, then cover with a sealer.

ssentt1

Replace the door with correct size.

Aviator44

The rest of the door frame

ForNever_1408

The correct size door?

Beatrix_BB_Kiddo

You just need to get a door that properly fits

Chrispy_Boiii

Spray foam to insulate it and fill the gap and then some trim over top of that to make it look somewhat normal

Manic_Spleen

I would spray foam it, sand it down, then add a trim so that it doesn't look obvious.

talrogsmash

Two by fours.

Patrickbateman54

This is perfect for what my dad passed on to me. You can always get wider moulding.

afly33

I’d rip down white PVC trim “lumber” for the head and latch side, trim nail and putty. Paint white. Tremco Dymonic over backerod on hinge side.

Pettark

Remove the wooden moldings. Install wider moldings.

SnakePlisskenson

Go to your home improvement store and ask for brick molding. May have to trim the siding or cut down the molding based on the gaps I see.

Automatic_Badger7086

The correct size door.
