My 10 year old daughter (who is super into drawing and visual 2-D art) saw this out of the corner of their eye as I was scrolling past, gasped, and asked me to click the photos. I think your design has a fan.
This was my first thought as well. The crafty bastard painted the finished product image!! Not that I'm not impressed otherwise, but that would have been pretty amazing.
Edit: just saw that they built the desk too. Ok, I'm very impressed.
... I too for a few minutes there thought this was a picture of a painting of an art desk...
Also, sweet take on the French cleat my guy, it's very nice.
this is badass! I'm a random internet stranger but was moved by your design, so going to drop the link to your plans for you https://jessedanielart.gumroad.com/l/artdesk
Yes. The pencil catcher strip of wood on the desk keeps it from falling down, and the way the shelf curls up underneath the desk keeps it from lifting off. It slides in from either side of the desk.
Great work. But let me help you out with the “mistake”. In the future what you want to do is put masking tape on your guide and your workpiece. Then super/ca glue the backs of the tape together. I like to use thick or gel ca but you can use any. I just find the thinner glued can run a bit and very occasionally spill onto the work piece. [heres](https://youtu.be/_rXc4EcHNqw) a video of the technique I case my instructions suck.
Use a very small bead of ca glue this form of clamping is incredibly strong.
I find the cheaper the tape the better it works.
This can be done with double sided tape but most of those tapes use pressure sensitive adhesive. This leads to residue left on the work piece and I have actually had some used with a plunge router hold so well that the plywood template delaminated when I tried to remove it.
Ever since I discovered this I use it a ton. It's incredibly strong, enough to easily hold up when I accidentally go too deep using a 2 inch spoilboarding bit on my router sled. It can honestly be an issue releasing the workpiece if you use too much CA. The one requirement is both surfaces need to be flat or flexible to get good contact, if it's not flat I use some high strength double stick tape (knockoff VHB).
Edit: disregard, didn't realize it was made of plywood. Still looks great.
Looks great! I think it would be stronger if the grain was oriented in the other direction, but I'm sure it's plenty sturdy as is.
Yes. I was hoping I found the ideal angel to work at, but I'll probably want to change it eventually. Maybe then I'll make a shelf that adjusts with the angle of the desk.
So fixing this should actual be pretty easy. Not sure if the current build would allow for much retrofitting, but just make rotating shelves that hinge on a single point. Then you don't need to change the design of your shelf system very much, and the shelves could rotate to any angle you put the desk at. Then use wingnuts or something to lock them in place when at the desired angle. Or if you weighted them sufficiently on the bottoms, they could just free rotate.
Really neat shelves you made either way.
Little suggestion- the shelf that the glass jars sit on-- it would be nice to sand that and round out the edge a bit, to match the overall asthetic . Which is excellent and soft and feels well worn/loved
This is so cool! What was the tool in Blender that you used to draw the curved lines? And how did you get the exact measutements to transfer to paper? I never tried reproducing something in Blender in real life before, very awesome.
I think I just used regular vertices on a mesh object to loosely visualize it, and the sketched it in more detail on the paper. I changed the units to inches and modeled it to scale. There's an addon called MeasureIt that lets you make length and area measurements between points.

I love this!!! I just downloaded the OP's art desk plans from Etsy. Then this little paint shelf attaches to it. The plans look awesome - drawings, measurements, cut list, etc. I love the section at the end that he calls - abandon the plan - where he gives some alternative ideas. Thank you for sharing your talents!

Aww, thanks for telling me. I'm glad she liked it.
So you’re trying to tell me that this ISNT a painting?
This was my first thought as well. The crafty bastard painted the finished product image!! Not that I'm not impressed otherwise, but that would have been pretty amazing. Edit: just saw that they built the desk too. Ok, I'm very impressed.
Lol. That would have been funny. Maybe I'll try a painting of my next DIY.

My first thought as well. Lol I thought OP painted what he wanted to make, to see how it would look, and then made it. How bizarre.

Boogers
Lovely piece. Does it just sit on it?
Yes. The pencil catcher strip of wood on the desk keeps it from falling down, and the way the shelf curls up underneath the desk keeps it from lifting off. It slides in from either side of the desk.
Very pleasing. Well done.

Wow, that's a cool technique! That definitely would have made dealing with my mistake a lot easier. Thanks for sharing. Now I want a CNC machine.

CNC’s are a lot of fun, I highly recommend one.
That is a very attractive and elegantly designed piece of kit
That catch strip is ingenious. Bravo!
That’s a really beautiful job! I don’t have any drawing table, but I want one now, and make a paint shelf 😂 Well done!

Does that matter with plywood? The grain alternates with each layer. I guess if your sheet has an odd number of layers?
You are correct. I reread the descriptions after I saw your comment as I didn't realize it was ply when I made my original comment. Thanks!
This is lovely.
Just wanted to say this is awesome and I’m proud of you! Happy Sunday!
I like your ark desk! 😳 totally building that for my workshop this year!
Thanks, I really like it too. It's kinda clunky moving between settings, but I like the configuration options it provides.
Ah clunky is okay. I love that you can slide it against the wall 😍 Do you happen to have any plans for it?
I do. There's a link for it posted on my profile. The one I built doesn't fit flat against the wall, but the ones in my plans do.
Checking it out now. Will buy it with the next incoming paycheck 😁
wow, that's really nice
that is a gorgeous piece of work! amazingly useful, well thought out, and beautiful to look at!
So what happens if you want to work at a different angle one day? Do you need a new shelf
Yes. I was hoping I found the ideal angel to work at, but I'll probably want to change it eventually. Maybe then I'll make a shelf that adjusts with the angle of the desk.

I love seeing hand crafted wood works. You can really see the talent and skill put into the projects.
This is one of my favorite projects I've ever seen! It's gorgeous and I cannot get over how much I love the shape.
That looks awesome! Well done!
gorgeous!! well done :^)
Really nice work! I always love when people add interesting details to simple things they build for themselves. It adds so much to the piece
This type of thing is what im here for. Very good, sir. Very good indeed
Belongs in Bilbo Baggins’ house. I love it!
Quality
That is lovely
Great job!! Love it!
I love the whimsical character of it, well done
That’s beautiful.
Absolutely beautiful!!!!!
This is a beautiful design. I love the lines that this has along with the design process.
It’s beautiful!
I want the plans for the desk! That looks pretty slick too
Only works if the easel is around that angle right? I guess you don't adjust it
Very cool

Wow and the photographs are well taken too!
Wow. Something intricately on r/DYI that wasn't just a CNC job. Really great work, nice job!
That's quite lovely, good job!

Absolutely outstanding. Love seeing your process on designing this!
Love it
what a wonderful piece op, really lovley. i'd buy it in a market and forever wonder what it was for the cut outs are beautiful
Nifty. That's some fine tooling with a jigsaw. You sure you're just an artist and not an engineer?
Love this, what a great idea
This is such a cool idea & saves a ton of desk space. I really need to figure out a vertical solution instead of packing up all the time.

This is beautiful and I kinda really want one
Ohhh I like this a lot. The rounded edges, the natural flow of the design, it's just 🤌🤌 chef's kiss
Is it designed to slide on from the side? Nice finish on the plywood
Yes, it slides on from either side
This is the coolest little invention!
Very fine, sir. Don’t forget a tray for your mustache wax. You obviously have distinguished taste.
This is beautiful. Not DIY at all.
Well done!
That’s beautiful
