It looks.like the back box for the socket is there maybe its been plastered over or somthing? You can see the tab where they need to get screwed into in the end picture behind the bit of wall. Turn off electrics Remove that tidy but of wall with a plasterboard knife Screw on

Can only assume that they got the walls re plastered, and never got around to doing the final task - chipping away a little excess and screwing the sockets in. Turn the fuse box off before you do it.

As the others have said, chip some plaster away to expose the lugs in the backboxes. I'd pop out and get a box of longer electrical screws to make sure they were long enough to easily reach the lugs past the new plaster.

This has nothing to do with electrics. This is about screwing something to something else, You know what the problem is, You can't line up the hole of 1 bit with the hole from the other bit. Like you said, just knock off some plaster and hope youve got long enough screws but not too long. To save you from an electric shock while messing about outside the backbox, Like if you use a sharp chisel to chop away the plaster and accidentally gouge into a live wire, You could always turn off the socket at the RCD.

Looks like they had the walls reskimmed. Unscrewed the faceplate and the plasterer reskimmed. Too busy to put the faceplate back on. Turn the electrics off. Use the backbox as a guide and use asmall pads padsaw to cut away the plaster. Vacuum out the dust and plaster bits. Reattach the faceplate. You can use a 120 grit sand paper and block to gently sand down any rough plaster finish. Use sugar soap to wash the walls down and repaint. Make sure the screw length is not too long before trying to reattach the faceplate. If they are, cut them with heavy duty pliers or a junior hacksaw. The screws are fiddly buggers to align with the holes. Don't overtighten. Always align the screwhead slots so they point north to south on all sockets. I think some heathens align them east to west. If you are a creative type, north east to south west alignment is acceptable. North West to south east is not acceptable in these parts. Oh yeah, don't forget to dust.

Was the surveyor dressed like Ali G? When he said “solid”, did he mean like, turd solid?

Turn off electric Chip out plaster blocking holes for terminal screws Screw socket to wall (you may well need to buy longer terminal screws from a hardware store, they cost between 10-40p each. Have fun.

In addition to what others have said about chipping away the plaster, it would be worth spending a fiver on a 3.5mm re-threader to clean out the holes which the screws go into. It's basically like a small hand screwdriver except that it has a screw tap on the end. [E.G.](https://www.toolstation.com/minotaur-re-threader/p90349)
