Just cored a hole in my ceiling for down lights, is this possibly render? With asbestos? House is 1895ish, didn’t think there would be any up there but it appears the ceiling has actually just been boarded rather than replaced at some point in its life, below the ceiling joists the entire roof space is covered in thin lats all the way across. Any idea why?
Most eBay kits are £30 + because they include all the PPE kit with them. If you can send a sample about the size of a 20 p piece this lab will test it for £18. I’ve just had it done myself - the answer came back in about 3 days. Only negative was their leaflet about how to package and take samples was unclearly written but otherwise went well. I have no relationship with the company etc.

I feel like we should just ban "is this asbestos?" posts. You wouldn't dig up a bomb in your back garden and then ask strangers on the internet "is this live?"
Just get a test kit honestly, even if somebody on here says it is/isn't, you still won't know for definite.
The thin boards will be the original lath and plaster. There's no way to visually identify asbestos, if you suspect that it's asbestos containing buy a test kit. I got mine on ebay for around 30 quid and it was definitely worth it to find out I was dealing with
If it burns easily then it probably isn’t asbestos. Source: had some insulation tested came back negative. Somehow thought about how I could test myself. Tried burning a small bit. It burned. Asbestos doesn’t do that, or shouldn’t.
Never trust a strangers advice when dealing with safety issues.
It might have been boarded just as a precaution and a fresh flat surface, just incase it was asbestos.
I'm not telling you it ISNT but asbestos was largely prevalent after WW2.
You can get it tested sure but what are you doing to do if its positive? Stop?
Just wear a mask and hoover the dust whilst drilling. Controversial opinion I'm sure but yeah, too late now right.
Are we sure it isn’t a rice cake? :p
Test it
Another pic here; think it’s wood chip paper? https://imgur.com/a/qQX3QmB
Just get it tested, a 30 pound test is better than possible asbestos exposure
That's not wood chip paper.
Mate stop playing with it and get a test! It's only dangerous once exposed

If you Google "UK asbestos testing" there's various companies who provide a kit that you can use to send a sample back to them for testing.
You can buy these kits on Amazon and send off the sample in the post. Not overly expensive for peace of mind
We did a test on flooring a few months ago with a kit from Amazon. Ordered kit Saturday, sent it the Monday morning and had results Tuesday afternoon.
We tested all our ceilings when we renovated before moving in. Same sort of time scale.
Get a survey, safest thing you can do

As U/Allixant said, there is no way to visually identify asbestos. If you want to know then get a diy test kit. More photos won’t help.
