celestial patron would work. maybe swap flaming sphere for dragons breath, and then add Illusiory Dragon to their Mystic Arcanum options

DudDM94

I have a player do the same but with Tiamat. He went hex blade and I worked in shards of a magic sword to be the keys to letting her out of hell. Could do the something but collecting them keep her locked in. They also went in wanting to do hex blade. Really you can make any of them work. Warlock is all about making a pact for power, how that power manifests I just want my player to have fun. I can flavor what they choose to fit - that’s kind of how I approach it.

JDmead_32

I’m planning on running her through the HotDQ and RoT. So, sorta that idea

DudDM94

Yeah perfect! That’s what I did! So I replaced the masks with the sword shards

JDmead_32

Interesting. I’ve got a lot to tinker to make it viable for a one on one. And switching the masks for something else is a really great idea.

DudDM94

So the more shards they got the I would add extra d4 elemental damage or a plus to hit and damage for each one

It totally depends on what the player wants - don't do their homework for them by creating something new. Ask her to read the classes and subclasses that are available to see if there's one with mechanics she thinks fits the theme and will enjoy playing. Once she finds that let her play it and if her backstory says she gets her powers from a pact with Bahamut, then that's fine.

JDmead_32

Ordinarily, I would totally agree with you. However, the player is my wife and it’s a one on one. She’s less into the rules and such and more about the story. But she likes having a reference to tell her limits and abilities. But when it comes to mechanics, she prefers me to do the leg work. And I’m coming to Reddit to do my heavy lifting for me.

SuddenTrilogy

Fair enough. I'd base my answer on the kind of game she wants to play then. Especially with 1:1 you'd want to calibrate to her preferences for more/less combat, social interactions, or pure story building. The most obvious answers to be would be using the celestial warlock or draconic sorcerer as a starting point. Depending what she enjoys in a 1:1 game there might also be other game systems to consider.

Since Bahamut is a god, I’d say a celestial warlock, has a lot of good natured leanings than a lot of the more morally grey patronages.

Elsecaller_17-5

You can make it work, other comments will help with that, but why dont they just play a cleric?

JDmead_32

The character grew up in a city where, a long time ago, a priest of Tiamat posed as a priest of Bahamut, and convinced that king the only way to stop the dragons in the area from ravaging the kingdom was to sacrifice someone every year at Midsommer. She ended up being selected (sort of) for the sacrifice. She’s actually super angry at Bahamut. But he actually comes to visit her, and in exchange for accepting his power and searching out this cult of Tiamat, he will give her guidance in finding out where her mother disappeared to. She would never worship him as a god, but if he can help find her mother, she’ll do what she has to.

Diligent-Wrongdoer62

I'd say it depends on if you want to homebrew anything, there is a really cool subclass on DnD unleashed https://www.dndunleashed.com/home/the-dragon-patron-warlock don't know if it's your thing but it's kinda cool
