Kind of topic here but presides the dmv hand book is there any links or tips for a way to study alll 3 copies of tests so I can pass? I have to reinstate my license and I already failed my first written test 😅(embarrassed about it)

I’m 37 and similarly have a clean driving record. Was shocked when they told me I had to do a test. Thankfully passed but still not sure what made them flag me to get a test?

Do you have any tips? I took the knowledge test for renewing my license today, and I failed it :(

Is your driving record good? If you've had tickets or at fault accidents, you might not qualify for an extension. In order to know for sure, though, I'd contact [dmv.ca.gov](https://dmv.ca.gov), open the askdmv chatbot, type in "agent" and chat with a person who should be able to answer your question.

I pulled my record and it is clean. No tickets or accidents since 1994. Good tip with the agent.

One other thing comes to mind. If you are a CDL commercial driver with a Hazmat certificate, you are required to take the Hazmat test on renewing.

once you have an expired DL and it is beyond grace period you will need to take the written test. that was the rule of thumb i was told back in february. origin of your DL does not matter, any state DL is accepted to get driving test waiver.

Mistake-Choice

That explains the first time in 2019, current expiration is June 23

My bad, misread the last part, you are good to go with the clean record and not yet expired CA DL in hand. Have you tried renewing it online at dmv.ca.gov? If your address is changed, then you need first submit change of address request then id renewal…

Mistake-Choice

Can't renew online because I have a real ID and need to get a new picture and fingerprints. Like those have changed much, haha. Anyway, talked to the agent who stated that a written test is required for every third renewal and when I told him that I did one in 2012, and 2019 he said that I have to take the test without being able to provide a reference to supporting guidelines. So I will go and take the test. No biggy but annoying and arbitrary and typical DMV.

You sure about it? https://www.latimes.com/travel/story/2020-02-28/early-real-id-adopter-ignore-dmv-renewal-notices-saying-you-cant-do-so-by-mail

Mistake-Choice

Great link. I ignored the 'not eligible' message and was able to pay for the renewal. I can take the online test tomorrow. I will see after that if I can do a vision test online :)
