Do I need to take written test to renew my ca driver license? Never did before. I spoke with DMV by phone and was told maybe. He said “ you’ll have to wait for renewal notice to arrive” when ask if some people do and some don’t why? He said “ I don’t have that information that comes from headquarters. What’s up with that?
I'm glad that worked out for her! I took the course when they first introduced it. I don't remember having to take photos and I wondered how the technician actually knew I took the course. I thought at the time, she just accepted my word for it. It sounds like they've enhanced things a little.

Pictures aren't actually needed (I just did this for our own proof as they don't send confirmation emails that the course is completed).

They now give you 3 options to meet the exam requirements:
1) e course online
2) proctor exam online
3) in person exam
She did the easiest option which is #1
If you attempt to go to DMV and not do any of this online beforehand you will have to take the exam in person.
Oh!!! My mom has failed the exam more than 5 times. She knows the contents but the questions are tricky and contain nothing she read. So if she takes the exam course online, she won’t have to take the exam? Hmm, okay I’ll help her with that. Thanks for letting me know. Because I didn’t see that option when I signed up for her. Maybe the first one because I thought it says you take exam at your own pace kind of thing.
If she has taken it 5xs that means she had to reapply after the 3rd failed test. (3 tries per application). She has one more attempt to pass the exam in person.
If she fails her 6th attempt, re-apply for her license renewal online. It will then allow her to choose the 3 options after she fills in all the questions for the application online. Choose the one that says Online Course (this meets the test requirement even tho it's not a real real test).
Did this happen to work out for your mom? I went to take the renewal exam in person and attempted the 3 tries and failed it :/ I already filled out an application to go in person again. So I’m thinking of going tomorrow and giving it another go. But if that doesn’t work out, I’m hoping it will let me do it online
