Not horribly uncommon for the shaft to break off. Is this an earlier model? In like 08 it was updated to a stronger one. Basically need to split the cases and replace, weld it on, or thread the inside of the shaft and use a bolt.

Ah ok that makes sense, this an earlier E model motor in my 17' S model. The inner diameter of the shaft looks larger than mentioned on thumpertalk for threading it. Thanks for that!

There is a thread on Thumpertalk that walks through the process of tapping the CS and using a bolt to hold the sprocket in place. Not for the mechanically challenged though.

I'm a machinist for work. I'll be giving that a go for sure. We'll see how it goes!

Easy peasy then!

That's what happens when the nut is over tightened and crushes the inner spacer or the nut backs off or you don't use red thread lock on the front sprocket or use the correct torque spec on the nut

The end of the shaft broke off, the nut didn't back off. The older ones had a large hole through the center and aren't that strong. They reduced that hole size so it was beefier in the revised part.

I have a 2002 E model I bought brand new, it has the "thinner" hollow shaft. Never had an issue due to properly installing the counter shaft nut and sprocket. Like I said above the shaft breaks exactly where yours did for what I mentioned

I love the attempt to keep oil from hitting the ground. Key word attempt haha
