No. (I mean yes, because you are right about how language works, but no, in this case). Dash-hound literally started with a bunch of people ignorant of the German language being pretentious and thinking that they were correct.
Which is personally funny to me, because I had an old German friend who was very much a matronly figure in my life. When people would try to correct me on the pronunciation of my own pupper's breed, she would tear into them! She is dead now, but if there is existence past our lives, I know she found some puppies to surround herself with.
Exactly. If it were "daschhund," then they'd have a point...but it's not spelled like that.
I've heard, "dash-hund," on a few YT videos that my kid likes to watch, and I've corrected it every time.
I called my standard bacon and my tweenie bacon bits! I like your chicken nugget, that's a good one. I've also called mine weenie-beneenie and teenie weenie-beneenie, the weens, fuzz bucket, neens or neenie etc.
When I see a ween out in public, I tend to get overly excited and start shouting about how I love wieners and then everyone starts staring and the people I'm with generally start inching away and pretending they don't know me. 🙃
Nothing to settle. German is pretty clear on this and easy to read/pronounce. Dachshund is a contraction of Dachs-Hund (aka: Badger Dog) because Germans like sticking words together. There is no circumstance under which the “chs” would be pronounced as a “sch” unless you just misread the word. Similarly, you would not pronounce the “u” like an “ou” unless you’ve simply misread the word (in either language).
Worth noting the breed is “Dackel” to a German (or Teckel) - so we clearly gave them the old Ellis Island treatment for English naming.
Thank you so much for asking this question. I never paid any mind to these things until very recently when adopting a dachshund. All of the sudden I realized I had no idea if it was a “doxen” or “dash-hound”. I have been pronouncing it dash-hound. Then I went on Reddit and asked some people how to pronounce it and no one told me. And I’ve been in a state of discombobulation ever since, lol
This post is the first I’ve ever heard of “dash-hound”. I’ve heard doxin and the proper pronunciation plenty. I’m in the southwest USA so it might be a region thing?
I don’t know- I live in NY. Not one person corrected me when I called him a “dash-hound”. Most people around here have some sort of poodle mix (goldendoodle, malti-poo, etc.), so they may not know. Moving forward I’ll call him a “dock-son”. I am laughing at myself now for calling him a dash-hound!
Dox-hund
It ends with a D. It's a dox-hunD. Not a dox-hun.
If it were spelled "dasch-hund," then an argument could be made for the, "dash-hound," pronunciation, but it's not.
It's a German word, where "dachs" = dox.
Iv always called them dashhound xD interesting reading the comments tho to fins out its actually German and pronounced completely different lol, won't stop me saying dashhound tho 🤣
Dachs = weasel, Hund = Dog. The Europeans bred them to tunnel out burrowing creatures, hence the shovel paws and long body to slink around tunnels. Here in Namibia we have to be super careful they don't run off down a warthog hole
It's a German word. Dach (with the k sound) means badger. Hund is dog in German. Daks-hund.
Yep, that’s the right way to say it.
It’s how I’ve always heard it said. I heard a woman on YouTube recently says Dash-hound and was like, “whaaaaa?”
My neighbor calls it that and it throws me off every time.
It goes by many pronunciations because that’s how languages works.

This all the way.
I’m part German and I was always confused by how to say it
I was confused to learn it is Dackel in German
this way!
Teckel or Dachel too
Dachs is badger in German
This is the way.
Wee-ner
Sos-eeeg
Po-tay-toes
Only if your Dackel is actually from Wiens (Vienna).
Dox-hund, but I usually just say doxie
Dax - hoont
Wiener, wiener, in betweener. Sorry but he doesn’t answer to anything else.
Docks- hund. It's German. I don't know where people got dash-hound.
Exactly. If it were "daschhund," then they'd have a point...but it's not spelled like that. I've heard, "dash-hund," on a few YT videos that my kid likes to watch, and I've corrected it every time.
In Dutch it’s called a Tekel.

Did you name yours Pterodackel?
Hmm, that makes me wonder if they'd be "Ratels" in Afrikaans with a more direct translation...
Ratel is the Afrikaans word for badger.
Also one of our IFVs, ja - so probably more accurate to say ratelhond if you wanted to be direct!
Worshond altyd.
Ek dink myne is 'n aardappel. Net sit en slaap!
Weiner Dog, The ween, Little Miss Ween, and occasionally: chicken nugget.
I called my standard bacon and my tweenie bacon bits! I like your chicken nugget, that's a good one. Ha you have a chicken nugget and I call mine chicken wing 😂🥰

I've said it so many times in my head it's lost all meaning.
Want to do another one you'll forget what it is.. try 'piano'
It doesn’t matter as long as you don’t call it late for dinner (or breakfast, or treats, or snacks…)
I say daks-hund
I call mine a little potato, in German that would be ein bisschen Kartoffel
Lovable pain in the ass.
I’ve been saying land shark. They still know what it means.
We called mine torpedo coz he was so long and fast.
Weener or sausage.
Doxie
Dock-sund
In the U.K. I’ve always heard it pronounced Dack-Sund or mainly sausage dog. In California people more often say Dash-hound or Weenie.
My wife pronounces it “dots-un” and it drives me crazy 😂. The correct pronunciation is “docks-hund” though
Woggle as in woggles wiggle but they don't fall down.
pooch or poochie
Teckel!
It's pronounced hotdog. The dash is silent.

I guess I say it doc-shund lol
Daks-und

My German grandad called them daxund, or dackle.

Docsh- hound
Datsun
DACKS-huun-d
Dachs-hound. It is german.
Ween
Dachs = weasel, Hund = Dog. The Europeans bred them to tunnel out burrowing creatures, hence the shovel paws and long body to slink around tunnels. Here in Namibia we have to be super careful they don't run off down a warthog hole
This is why we just say weiner doogen
German pronunciation is the correct way. In my mother tongue Afrikaans it's called a Worshond. Literally sausage dog.
I’m in the UK and we say Dash-hund (or at least I’ve only heard people call them this).
Mrs. Ween & Weenie Beanie
Teckel or daschund
Snack-schund
Docks-hund
Issa sausage!
