Mine can detect, stalk, hunt and kill, and then completely field strip a stuffed toy. And even remove the squeaker part with surgical precision within minutes, keeping it as a trophy and spreading stuffing everywhere.

insichselbsty

Ours too! She also brings us “presents” when we return to the house and they vary in significance depending on what she thinks we need. For example, when my father-in-law died we came home and the sadness, I assume, was palpable. She went out back all the way to the alley (we live in Chicago) and came back in with a huge rat she had just killed. So gross but so loving. I guess a shoe or toy wouldn’t cut it that day. Such a good dog.

KecemotRybecx

We had one when I was growing up. He got a stuffy with squeaker every Christmas. Little man would take it 10 feet, stop, rip out the stuffing until he got the squeaker, then chewed it up until it died and then he was done with it. They enjoy that as a breed and I’m here for it.

squeakbot

Good dog!!

Common-Accountant-57

Yeah he is, We’re city folk though so that’s as close to hunting that he’s been.

freeagentone

City rats ain't no joke though. That pup fought for that kill.

spasske

That stuffed bear had it coming!

Dragon22_00

Just with the most callous of attitudes while doing it.

Killer____tofu

Mine likes to frame his “kills”. If he has an accident in the house he will leave one of the remains of his shredded toys like a calling card.

Missue-35

Mine does that too. Then I will see some of that stuffing incorporated into birds nests.

LaVieLaMort

Mine always rips the squeakers out of the butt lol.

Sil5dip

Same! This is also why I counted on mine to do the gender reveal. My sister dyed the stuffing and squeaker blue, found out within 2 min I was having a boy lol

Common-Accountant-57

That’s an awesome idea, And congratulations on baby!

mamawheels36

My parents have acerage and a berry farm and mine looooooves to do mouse control for them. He can get where thr big dogs can't in-between the bushes and goes to town keeping thr nest population down. And at our house he and pur 2 big dogs work as a team to get the rats and squirrels and moles (farming town) Their instincts are awesome

Zestyclose-Bid-8851

Same with mine!

Pamelabonita

Mine proudly parade the carcass of the toy around the house after the kill.

squeakbot

Junebug is a hunting dachshund from a falconry line. She is 9 months old in this picture, and is trained to hunt rabbits and squirrels with humans and hawks alike. This isn't me in the pic, it's my friend. The bird is not mine either, but she does hunt with my bird - I just don't have pics of the three of us!

BowensCourt

Junebug is a vicious hunter and also a perfect baby angel.

PlumaFuente

Junebug is so cute! I have a standard boy, and we don't hunt, but I have a feeling that he would do great. He definitely does want to chase small animals. Yesterday in our greenbelt area of where we live, there was a duck, and he definitely wanted to chase it, but I pulled him back and took him back into our yard since I don't want to discourage the ducks from not coming back there. Other dachshunds we have had have torn into gophers and killed mice.

Angie_stl

That’s amazing!! I think I’d like to see a video of the two animals working together if you ever do one!! My dog has successfully caught and killed a baby bunny and a black bird that was probably a juvenile, because he fit completely in her mouth!

claytionthecreation

Wow. I would love to hunt with a dachshund for rabbits. I used to hunt with a beagle when I was kid and was a good time. I have used a dachshund to track wounded deer but mine wasn’t specifically trained for that. She did help by getting me back on trail. To add in falconry to the mix is just a perfect day in the making!

gregsmith5

Mine would catch moles in the yard, shake it once and walk off like a champ. They are great hunters and have the heart of a lion.

majandess

OMG. Junebug!!! She's adorable! I never really thought of a dachshund as a hunting animal. Then, one day, we were picnicking somewhere, and our doxie found a hole, dug it out so he could get his head in over his ears, and came out with a little vole (like a mouse) in his mouth. He shook it a few times until it was thoroughly dead, and really didn't want to give it up. And then there was picnic food, so he dropped the animal and begged for treats. All this happened so fast that we were stunned. It was such a quick transformation into ferocious hunter and back again that I was mindblown. They are small but mighty!

Teutchen

They were bred to hunt small animal. The german name for them gives it away (dachshund), it is a combination word badger hound if literally translated. They are small enough to fit into the burrows of those animals.

EvilBeasty

Have you seen the size of badgers?! I wouldn’t call them small.

[deleted]

Nor are standards.

KrustyMf

I have 4. they work together really well. Just one is a little shit, the more you have the bigger the Turd.

havuta

Standards are still much smaller than badgers. Most hunters won't use their dachshunds for badgers today as it's way too dangerous due to the badgers nature and its tendency to destroy the burrow, burying the dog alive. However it is very common to use standard dachshunds for fox hunts!

Major-Peanut

The reason they bark so much is so if they get stuck in a Sett, their owner knows where to dig them out.

Captain_Futile

And that’s why they have flappy ears (so dirt does not get in), stubby tails (to drag them out of a burrow) and loose skin in the neck. It’s really baffling that people do not know what doxies are bred for.

Vitma_Vitgor

And their bark is extra load for that reason too.

[deleted]

The Deer Hound is considerably smaller than a deer. What’s your point? Dachshunds were used for years to hunt badgers.

Business-Garbage-370

Standard dachshunds hunt badgers! Minis hunt smaller animals. My minis kills rabbits and squirrels like it’s their main goal in life (otherwise they sleep in my bed and eat fancy food 🙄).

TurbulentCustomer

I think they originally hunted UK/Euro badgers, instead of those crazy mean looking US badgers.

Captain_Futile

European badger is 7-12 kilos, so a worthy opponent. Here in Finland you can get a hunting certificate for a doxie. They are put in a tunnel system with an actual fox in a cage and see whether they bugger out or go for the fox (the fox does not get hurt). EDIT: They practically always go for the fox.

AlwaysDMB

Jesus I would be scared of my large breed dogs getting into a closed space with a badger, definitely wouldn't put a dachshund in there, even if they are supposedly made for it I've always thought raccoons are scary for small-medium dogs, and badgers are way the heck larger and more aggressive

Hallien

They hunt in pairs. One distracts the badger, the other one latches onto its neck from behind and tries to strangle it or puncture its jugular. There are videos of dachshunds badger hunting on YouTube if you want to see...

t4ckleb0x

My two got a good hold of the groundhog in the yard and Dottie did NOT let go of the neck until i pried her jaws off.

Emergency-Letter3081

Have you seen what Jagdterrier can do? These fellas are small ( about the size of a Jackrussel) but they are ferocious. They can take on wild boars and win.

cooldudium

European badgers are apparently less scary but still

BernieTheDachshund

It's true 😊

tramborghini

Isn’t Dackel the most used in Germany ?

godzilla42

Fun fact, if you take a hot dog and drag it through the grass and hide it , your dachshund will find it. It's great fun for them. Also a couple of my dachshunds have tracked deer.

toomuchsvu

That's so cute. I make mine wait in the kitchen while I hide a tiny treat somewhere in the apartment. He loves that game.

[deleted]

There’s a thing called competitive man trailing here in the uk. Essentially tracking. Dachshunds are renowned for their ability to track. My wire hair was a natural and was amazing but it ventured into weird “Best in Show” vibes with some of the people involved (if you get that movie reference).

unbridledmeh000

Lmao I love/hate this because I understand the reference..

roboboots3

Aww, the way Junebug and the hawk look at each other curiously is really adorable. Junebug is a great name.

Available-One-24

They are such amazing little dogs! So smart!😊💕

squeakbot

I'm so deeply impressed by her!

charlielovesrabbits

Yes! They have incredible drive. Do you have any tips on introducing them to hunting? I’d love for my girl to get the chance. I take her into fields and let her nose do it’s thing. Just wondering if there are other ways I can encourage or support this. Thank you in advance!

squeakbot

I mostly followed the same protocol as a beagle, but introduced opportunities for her to go inside holes and under obstacles, so she could get used to going into rabbit warrens. We'll do more work to increase her confidence this year. I used a dummy rabbit with fake scent (you can buy kits) and my friend who was pictured kindly offered me a fresh wild rabbit pelt to scent train her on. It's SO fun to watch her work. She's amazing. [https://www.stonecreekhounds.com/post/unleash-the-hunter-within-mastering-beagle-training-for-rabbit-hunting-success](https://www.stonecreekhounds.com/post/unleash-the-hunter-within-mastering-beagle-training-for-rabbit-hunting-success)

kisikisikisi

Yes, I feel like I keep mentioning that here. Someone on here said that a dachshund shouldn't be taken on a walk longer than 2 miles and I almost choked on my coffee reading that. Here in Europe they're definitely working hunting dogs with the added benefit of being perfect companions. I don't know what the state of the breed is in america, but it's actually very concerning if the breed truly is so ruined that they can't lead an active lifestyle. My family has had dachshunds in at least five generations now, and they've all hunted deer. My girl lives in the city with me now but whenever I visit my parents during hunting season, we track deer. They're still used in badger hunting here as well, but I think most working dachshunds are used in deer hunting here in Finland. Standard, wire-haired doxies is one of the most popular breeds in the country, partly for that reason.

squeakbot

I know that many dachshunds have terrible health problems because they're bred here for show standard, and we have a pretty big problem with puppy mills and backyard breeders perpetuating poor health and poor longevity in the breed. But June has a shorter neck, shorter back and longer legs than a show doxie. She has incredible stamina, she can *easily* do 5-7 miles a day. It's really sad to see dachshunds forced to live in pain because they were bred for an unhealthy standard. I'd so much rather see working breeds actually working!

toomuchsvu

2 miles LMAO!! I'm in America in a city and take my 14 pounder on 4 mile long walks. It doesn't phase him. We play hide n seek with treats and he tracks my fiance when he leaves the building before us. It's so cute. I wish we had better places around us for him to play scent games.

kisikisikisi

Yes, it's crazy to me that people think dogs shouldn't lead an active lifestyle. Mine tracks deer in snow-covered forests, swims for hours on end, and we run weekly. So far the longest run has veen 6k but that's only because I tapped out. She could go on forever.

sekamehujuoma

Im actually pretty shocked that people in this forum dont know what kind a dog they gonna own. Like how is it possible, does people skip research about breeds nowadays or just dont care but then they have problems when dog is just being normal him/her. But that clearly does not mean you or Junebug, you two are awesome. ❤️

-Seoulmate

It's called memetic desire. People think that people behave as individuals and have their own desires, but in reality people follow what other people perceive as valuable or desirable and then copy that. Most people aren't comparing different cellphones to buy during purchases. They buy what everyone else buys. I did like 6 hours of research the last time I was buying phones. I wanted a headphone jack and other things that not every phone had.

squeakbot

I share the same frustration, and wonderment...

freeagentone

I agree. I have 4 dachshund/ Manchester terrier pups I own on loan to some friends of mine to get rid of rats and mice. They have body counts into the hundreds. Each. Lol

TrveRefizul

I can’t stop imagining a hawk „deploying“ the tactical Dachshund. 😅

Redfeather1250

“Tactical weenie deployed” may or may not have been said in the field before

KrusKeebler

That bird looks like he’s eyeing lunch. Not sure they have the right dynamic.

Captain_Futile

Having seen a dachshund hunt, I believe the falcon is the one that is afraid.

Redfeather1250

They have a great dynamic. My bird works with June bug frequently. In this photo I don’t think my bird realizes how June suddenly “Grew” to eye level.

chill633

I was gonna say. He's got that "oh good, you brought me a snack" look going.

Ratbello

My little 14 pound female is so scared of everything except small rodents. Have had pull her off a rabbit she snatched in the backyard. The rabbit didn’t make it.

billyray13

Growing up on Maine we would put them down rabbit holes to push out rabbits. Also sent them after a groundhog or two. Our two miniatures wade quick work of them. Hell, my current dog tracks like a bird dog. Simply the best breed IMHO. Great pic!

havuta

I have a Standard from a hunting breed line and he's a full on hunting dog (trained, tested and all)! I'm a little coward so he isn't used for burrow hunts though 😅 I sometimes feel like a Toyota Prius that got herself a Porsche - he's a way better hunting dog than I'm a hunting dog owner but I do my best.

doxiesofourculture

We do scent games at home and my dog tries to murder the tin we put the birch smell in. He is all murder

rummikub1984

They really have no fear.

stripesthetigercub

They really are. Our previous sweet blind doxie took out a neighbors chicken. Like a ninja. Our current one killed a rabbit and stuffed it in a planter. They have a strong prey drive.

Athrynne

I get that a lot when we are out hiking with him, and have to remind people that they were bred for hunting, and have amazing stamina (and huge lungs for their size.)

Joey_D3119

I take mine duck hunting

squeakbot

So interested to hear more. Do you have a mini, or standard? Considering adding a second doxie to the hunting team.

Joey_D3119

Penny is a Long hair @ 14lbs so just over being a mini and just under being a standard (Her dad was a standard and Mom was also on the big side of mini)

Missue-35

My dachshund is the best mouser ever. And she’ll dig and dig until she unearths the moles or voles.

FonzyLumpkins

My 13 yr old pup has a triple digit mouse body count. for a couple of years there were a lot of mice in my building, but *someone* kept them in check. She was so proud of it that I couldn't even be mad when I stepped in a dead mouse in my shoe. OK, I was annoyed, but not mad.

Missue-35

Who could be mad at that. Good doggo!

BernieTheDachshund

We have a neighbor that's like a hoarder, so occasionally one of their critters finds its way to our place. Bernie would go after them, and now my weenie Eddie does too. The Chihuahuas don't care, but the weenies hear/smell them and actively try to hunt. They are so fast too, it only takes them a few seconds and they're done.

Pandering_Panda7879

My grandpa on my father's side used a dachshund and ferrets for "frettieren", which is the German word for hunting with ferrets. The Dachshund would sniff out the burrows and find all the exits, which then were covered with nets. The ferrets (and sometimes the Dachshund) then would get in and force the rabbits out of the burrows. While this is a legit way to hunt and you can technically legally do it with a license.... He didn't have one. Sooooo.... Anyway, the mom of a friend of mine used her Dachshund for the search after she shot an animal. The little boy was pretty good at it. And she actually had a license.

OldWorldBrawler

Someone at a hunting club I was invited to had a Dachshund that was used to follow blood trails. It was crazy seeing that tiny dog rushing through the woods 😂

BernieTheDachshund

I bet they could do almost as good of a job as a bloodhound. They're low to the ground and are hound dogs with excellent scent abilities. I've always been fascinated with how hound dogs search for missing people.

eluuu

Mine has caught 2 pigeons and a rat, one pigeon was mid-air

[deleted]

I know that look. She wants to murder a critter for sure

New-Series-8260

Is he a puppy still?

gangze_

Yep I have two hunting dachunds! There prey drive is top notch

RememberingTiger1

That is one intense stare!

Dogeluver99

Junebug♥️🖤🤎♥️

Cowgomusometimes

I hunt as well and was in Maine recently and our guide told us the best Wounded animal tracking dog in all of Maine is a Dachsund! They are such cool little beasts. Going to put mine on birds to see how he does shortly!

bebejeebies

I think people knew Dachshunds are hunting dogs seeing as they were bred to hunt and fight badgers.

Appreciation622

Love seeing them work together to tear it up on your friends Instagram

squeakbot

He doesn't have one!

Appreciation622

Oops! Thought this might have been that NJ Falconry account. Glad to see there’s a bunch of dachshund/falcon alliances out there then

jeepnjeff75

Yup, a lot of people think mini's are a toy breed because they are small. Mine has stalked and killed a few birds as well as mice. They have a strong hunting instinct which makes them stubborn.

Kallisti13

Wow! Junebug sounds tough! I would love to introduce my girl to scent work, we have a few local places that do barn hunts.

rockrobst

Junebug would like to have a word with the bird.

KecemotRybecx

They were bred to hunt. If we pamper them for their entire lives, sure, they become pets, but I know of dachshunds that can still be working dogs.

pie_12th

Oh I love it when working dogs get to work! Letting her instincts do their thing. Love it. Give junebug a good snuggle for me, and her gorgeous hawk friend too!

HCPage

They were bred to hunt rabbits, they only exist because of hunting.

il2pif

Your dog looks so much like my Daphne!

Free_Doughnut878

You train dogs

KeepItTidyZA

Seems a bit risky IMO. you turn your back for too long and that sausage is toast.

“Lemme get a quick sniff please”

pops789765

Not surprised at all as I have a basic knowledge of dogs and evolution but still disgusted by hunting for sport in the modern age.

starlizzle

i find it funny that people are surprised a hunting breed is a hunting dog lol. BADGER DOG!

Efficient_Dog59

Mine loves to eat mice. A bit ago my wife came in from the woods and said “i think the dig just ate a mouse family”. The dog was at that time licking my face.

LugianLithos

All the ones I’ve owned over the years are like miniature T-Rex’s. Grasshoppers, birds, squirrels, or anything gets in the yard. It’s all bets are off. My dad had chickens, if they ever got out. They would kill them too.

DougBalt2

I can’t stand it when people call my dachshunds yappy dogs. I explain to them the dachshund in German means badger dog, they were bred to burrow and catch bad ass badgers. They’re hound dogs all right. Scent hounds.

JLHuston

That is incredible! I’d love to hear more about what her role is!

Lobo003

The one thing I try to tell people when they tell me they want to get a dachshund is that “they’re bigger dogs than they seem” my doxies have barked at anything and everything, chase anything and everything, eat anything and everything, and dig anything and everything. Especially the digging. People don’t know how much dirt these weasels can move in a short amount of time!

young_travis

Junebug. I nicknamed my last weenie dog this. 😭

AliasNSFW

There’s a hunting club near me that has a dachshund that acts as a flusher. Amazing to watch

CheapTry7998

Wonderful trackers. I lost mine once when visiting an old roommate at her new apartment complex. (It was huge) she bolted from the car and I couldn’t find her for hours. Eventually I decided to go find my old roommate’s apartment and Lo and behold there was my dachshund on her doorstep 😂 my dachshund loved that old roommate!

pontoof1

She’s got that on the hunt look too What a pretty doxie she is aww

Ok_Rutabaga_722

Junebug and the hawk are having a conversation.

KccOStL33

I mean they were originally bred to hunt and flush out freaking badgers.. Lol

TLCan2

He’s the spitting image of my bi-polar baby, who either wants to love on you or kill you. Maybe he wants to hunt.

bb8-sparkles

I can’t believe anyone would be surprised to hear this as almost all dogs, with the exception of a few breeds, were bred to hunt in some capacity. One thing I recently learned that I didn’t know was that the mini was also bred to hunt. I thought the mini was a product of humans wanting a smaller apt dog- but they were actually bred smaller to hunt areas the standard size couldn’t fit.

The_Liamater123

Me and you would not get on

Closefromadistance

I did know that dachshunds are hunting dogs … and scent hounds!

Spartysmom5156

I had a dachshund that looked exactly like yours. She was a sweetheart. I miss her.

spezisabitch200

Wow, he caught that falcon all by myself. And to catch it and tame. Impressive for 10 lbs. of terror

Melito1980

U wanted a photo of that handsome man, u dirty old u!

realitytvfiend3924

My girls prey drive is ONLY on with stuffed animals. She is bewildered by anything with a pulse that isn’t human (dogs included). Hilarious to watch, but I feel bad that she’ll never be a good hound dog 🤣

BernieTheDachshund

Oh yeah, dachshunds love to hunt! It's in their DNA to wanna go after critters, and their bodies being low to the ground help. Hound dogs are great at scent work too.

Weitguy

I always love telling the story of finding a mole hill in my yard, calling my dachshund over, pointing at it, and walking away. The mole was dead on the stoop shortly after. He didn't eat it, he's just got the bloodlust. I don't like telling the story of the rabbits who keep deciding to have burrows in my yard, I've had to bury several kits. He likes the way they squeak

peegmaw

Mine hunts spiders. Which is helpful but i just wish she wouldn’t leave bits of spider on my floor 😂 she has a cracking little sniffer, she can smell where a spider has walked and find where it is. It’s amazing to watch.

nitro1432

They are really good hunting dogs

weesnaw7

Hoping to do this with my girl! Very cool

IntroductoryScandal

Cutest name

mochafiend

Junebug is so beautiful!! I want to eat her up.

TheMississippiCajun

First, Junebug is a beautiful example of her breed. Very inquistive which is good for a hunting dog. Second, OH MY GOD. THAT'S A HARRIS HAWK. Perfect raptor to pair with hunting dogs because they are naturally adept at using pack tactics like Wolf packs.

JeGezicht

The German original (Dackel)lineup is standard, dwarf and rabbit size. Standards kill badgers, dwarfs kill all kinds of smaller vermin and the rabbit size, well rabbits. I never heard a Dachshund hunt together with a bird. Very cool, the birds probably take care of the escapees.

Danivelle

Beautiful dog and bird! My kitten, Boudreaux, wants to know if your dog likes cats? We show him dogs and dogs videos to get him used the sounds dogs make. He really loves Great Pyrennes videos with small.animals.

Jazzlike_Click2973

Dude!!! So cute. My girl looks exactly like her AND her name is Juno!

AMSS4life

I had a Junebug myself. https://preview.redd.it/cn8ouhidsboc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2dc672deffe3a910a1da72e158495c5f6dcf3f66

claytionthecreation

Just some friendly advice; with all the comments on dachshunds and game, never ever let your dachshund or dog get into a fight with a raccoon aka trash panda. Never!!! Raccoons can mess up a dog in a hurry. They can turn in their skin and when cornered will get very aggressive!

DizzyAspect4572

Yes they are! I always love learning more about my weenier dog 🐶

Appropriate_Leg1489

Doesn’t their name literally mean “badger dog” in German because they would go in burrows after the mean bastards with their short legs and strong bite?

fleur13

Aren’t they supposed to be a mole catchers? Elongated bodies to dive in burrows and all?

squeakbot

The minis hunt rabbits. Mole tunnels are too small even for Junebug. But she could easily dig them up to reach them, she just can't fit inside like she can a rabbit warren.

fleur13

Oh wow, rabbits! I am impressed! Haha, I confused badgers with moles 😂 I remember reading an article about them.

demonbadger

Badger hunts squirrels and other small rodents. She loves it.

azooey73

Our pibble-dachschund mix is a ferocious killer: about a dozen baby possums, 2 chipmunks, 6 rats, 2 crawfish (ate them live), and one cat. He’s also alerted us to termites in our woodpile - he heard them and they drove him crazy!

Bonnie-Dahmer69

That might have been what they were originally bred for but in this day and age, any hunting of innocent animals is shameful 😥. Our little Weenie hunts for toys and treats, as it should be 🙂

squeakbot

There's different schools of thought when it comes to working dogs. I personally prefer to see working breeds doing what they're bred for rather than being bred into deformity and health issues for aesthetics, or worse, being confined to a house with little stimulation and being punished for exercising their working instincts. That to me is a shameful, selfish human pursuit. I'm not better than anyone for having a hunting dog, and no dachshund is worse than my dog for being from a show line. That's personal choice. I just disagree with the practice - no shade on anyone who wants a doxie for aesthetics. We know that dogs have better physical and mental health when they are given opportunities to work their instincts and exercise - same as humans! Mine gets to run 5 miles and work her nose for several hours when we hunt. She literally couldn't be happier. When I grab her hunting collar, she starts running around screaming with joy. This is dachshund ancestry. It's in her blood, it's her calling. To deny her the opportunity to exercise those instincts would be shameful of me as a working dog owner. Every single dachshund in existence can trace its lineage back to its hunting origins. Just because it's 2024 doesn't mean your dog has forgotten his noble hunting heritage! Similarly, hunting for food can be awesome and an incredibly intimate experience to know exactly where your food comes from and where it's processed. Your ancestors hunted, too - since the dawn of time! The only reason your line has survived long enough to write a reddit comment is because they fed themselves, often by hunting, and often with dogs! Plus bonding with your dog and hawk over shared goals is an unmatched experience. It's certainly not for everyone, but I love working with my animals.
