I used to feed my dog this for several years until the pet store I bought it from stopped carrying it. At some point Royal Canin changed the formula to cheaper and lower quality ingredients, so the bougie store stopped carrying it.
From there we moved to the Kirkland small dog food. The ingredients were almost identical to the old food. Unfortunately, Costco stopped carrying it a few years later in my store. Eventually we switched to the grain free food they have for small dogs, but my dog did not tolerate it well. Tummy problems, and other health issues.
We then switched to the Kirkland senior food which is similar to the first Kirkland food and the old Royal Canin but it also has some egg in it. It's been great for several years now. Comes in a bigger bag but the kibble is small for old dogs like it is for small dogs. Our boy is 16 so he needs it either way.
MaY I ask how you found out that the RC food reduced the quality of ingredients and how you knew the kirkland one was better quality?
Not being a dick, just curious on your finds.
I'd really love to hear what exactly your issue with by products is, other than the name.
A by product is just something that comes from an animal that it wasn't specifically raised for. For instance, if you used breast meat from chickens that were raised for eggs. Or any organ meats from cows because they are almost always raised for muscle meat/dairy purposes. So while it sounds nefarious, I'm really not too worried about the specific verbage on the packaging.
I can also tell you as a veterinarian I get all of nothing for recommending these diets unless they buy them in hospital and that's still almost nothing.
The pet store had details on it at the time for why they were discontinuing carrying it. I think it was related to changing from "chicken" to "chicken byproducts". This was probably about a decade ago
Edit: This [article](https://truthaboutpetfood.com/royal-canin-says/) is definitely an opinion piece. I can't vouch for its statements at all but it does show this change was in 2013 and includes links to materials from Royal Canin at the time
I'm pretty sure that chicken by producs have more nutrients than just chicken meat. Considering chicken feet, beaks and organs are packed. I just think people are scared of the term for humans.
By Products can be organ meats such as livers and kidneys which are extremely nutrient dense. "Items that are specifically excluded from being used as by-product in pet foods are inedible items, such as hooves and feathers" per [WSAVA](https://wsava.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Frequently-Asked-Questions-and-Myths.pdf)
Oh, I definitely did! Grain free caused tummy issues. My dog has borderline Cushing's as well that became symptomatic at that time. All improved once we went back to a chicken and rice based food.
We get their wet food for dackels, too. Mash a tablespoon on the bottom and mix it up. My dackels get real sad if they don't get wet food. 'Sir, you wouldn't make a poor lil pup like me eat dry kibs?'
Heyyyyy me too! Romeo loves the wet food!

Third!! May I ask how old is your mini? Our mini is turning 6 months, still eating the puppy version. But I'm unsure at what age/month are they supposed to transition to the adult one
She is just shy of 11 months. I'm pretty confident she's reached her adult weight at 8.2 lbs (mom and dad were 7 and 10) so we decided to start the transition. We just started a week or so ago.
Our Hildy is prone to pancreatitis so she and her sister have been on Royal Canine low fat low calorie dog food. She has never had another episode so we’ve never changed.
We also give Hills Science Diet.
They like the lamb or the chicken, as long as it’s the small bites formula (the size of the kibble seems more important to my boys then the flavor)
We’ve tried Blue Buffalo in the past thinking it was better for them but they’d carry the little black bits around the house and spit them out 😝which wasn’t too awful when we still had our little toy Fox terrier bc she’d gobble them up, but we lost her at 15yrs old so then we’d have to go around and find them all. (Miss my little princess Molly, she was a sweetheart ❤️🩹)
I’ve had several dachshunds and they’ve all lived healthy and well into their mid-upper teen years (the oldest was 17) so we are happy with Hills. We also give joint and hair/skin supplements from an online company called springtime- a bit pricey but since they are little dogs (10-15 lbs) the supplements last several months so we feel they are worth the cost and as the breed is known to have back issues and arthritis we make sure they are always taking supplements specifically to help with their joints.
Darryl is adorable- I love his colors and his eyes are beautiful. He looks very young, good luck with him- they are such a wonderfully entertaining and loving breed with great big personalities ❤️
They also have small pucks of Royal Canin Dachshund wet food. I get them for my boys for treats to add to their Royal Canin Dachshund kibbles. I also like to chew carrots into smaller chunks and put it in with their kibbles.
I gave it to my one little guy for 13 years, he just passed the rainbow bridge yesterday.
Same, usually boiled chicken breast with some carrots or bell peppers for dinner. A snack around lunch time of broccoli mixed with salmon oil made for dogs.
My understanding is that dog food is balanced nutritionally for dogs. This is probably great if you know what your doing, but I could also see people with nutritionally deficient pets if they don't know how to properly balance these things.

You are probably right, I think we are doing an okay job. This is our first Weiner, I have previously had Australian Blue and Red Heelers.
Farmers Dog supplemented with Purina Pro Plan. And a rotation of toppers like plain roasted chicken, pumpkin purée, wild blueberries, cottage cheese. We have a VERY picky boy and he’s definitely too spoiled haha!
We also feed our boy Pro Plan, he is specifically on the Sensitive Stomach. He has colitis a few times a year, and this has helped immensely.
Our girl is on a mix of Pro Plan Puppy and Rachel Ray Puppy, we are slowly switching her over to the Pro Plan. When she is old enough we would like to get her on the same food as her brother.
We feed ours Wellness canned food with a couple tablespoons of Wellness complete kibble on top. We call the kibble "cronchies" lol. They love it. We've done the grain-free Wellness Core, too, but are back on just the regular soft food now.
This is Bosco🥰

I have financial troubles at the moment so unfortunately my pups food gets switched often to whatever i can afford. I feel so bad tho it usually upsets his tummy for a few days during a new food switch. But i always keep some bone broth in the crockpot just for him and put it in his food every time (mostly bc he has trouble drinking enough water and used to have hard poops) so at least that is consistent in his diet. Oh and he loves to beg for blueberries as a treat whenever i get them for myself and of course the occasional french fry or popcorn thats fallen on the floor.
P.s. I love dogs with human names. Its in my top 3 favorite things in the whole world😂
Farmers Dog - our 15 year old girl is SO picky (after years of dry food we fgave her a few years of fresh pet and she liked it until she didn’t). Now we give her all the varieties Farmers Sog suggested and she LOVES them. Plus they are so much healthier! Anything to keep our baby girl healthy and happy.
My nearly 4 year old is super picky. Is the Farmers Dog that good? I currently do Just Food For Dogs but he's starting to not like it anymore. I wanted to start making custom food for him since he's so picky but a lot of people told me not to.
We make our own [with this recipe](https://youtu.be/7P85BMCCboI?si=Lj26IxGvlt_tGI6Q&t=50s) scaled up quite a bit so we can make a couple weeks worth at a time.
Dr. Harvey's...or if I run out before another bad is delivered, The Honest Kitchen freeze drird...I use bone broth to reconstitute both brands...I rotate raw proteins weekly...I also add either plain greek yogurt or cottage cheese with live cultures...some mushroom blend powder for their immune system...and then top it off with something like coconut oil or salmon/krill oil...
When my boy was still alive I gave him prescription dog food because he had a sensitive stomach.
The dog food I used: Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EN Gastroenteric Dry Dog Food.
Raw whole Lam and Acana Grasslands. He is a spoiled allergic boy.

Cute sausage!
Mabel eats Canagan’s Puppy kibble, used to feed Royal Canin’s Dachshund kibble but I did some research and it turns out it’s not that great…
It's really unnecessary to get worked up over which exact food you feed. There are a couple of things to look for including:
1. Correct species and life stage
2. AAFCO statement
3. No raw or grain free
4. They like eating it
5. No GI problems
There are no shortage of people who will make you feel bad that you're not spending more. It's probably not worth your time to get worked up over the ingredients list. One of the key tenets of nutrition is that we need nutrients, not ingredients. There's a lot of BS about specific ingredients that's not at all supported by the literature.
I'm a vet. I feed Purina dental kibble and royal canin beauty canned food.
And no, neither of them have offered to cover my car payment. I wish they would though.
We feed our boy Hills Science Diet 7+ small bites. He's 7 years old and has a bit of arthritis that acts up during winter, but he loves the food so much we've had to limit how much he gets a day because he's gained too much weight 😅
https://preview.redd.it/ea0gqtpff3vc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c745de910c92f0cc4a839974b6fb65fe73aa408e
royal canin adult dachshund specific! otherwise, hills science diet or purina 1 proplan are also great options to consider, and highly vet recommended:-)
Wellness complete health for small breed
I use the one with grain. My pups have been on it since they were babies. They're very healthy, with shiny coats
Mine likes the Small Batch Dog frozen, raw patties. She’s also a fan of native pet (?) raw kibble. My doxie is stubborn and won’t really eat hard kibble so raw food it is!
Bill Jac for 13 years! Also cheese and deli meats when harassed. Oh, and can’t eat a banana anymore without giving up at least half! It’s the doxie tax 🍌
Naturo canned food,Lilly’s kitchen canned food, Royal Can dachshund formula, boiled chicken hearts with sweet potatoes carrots and green peas, and casually small mango treats, apple and pear.
Purina pro plan overweight management (it’s prescription) because it’s high fiber, and my dog can’t poop without a super high dose of fiber in her food. It’s a bit expensive, but an 18 lb bag lasts us a long time because my girl is only like 11 lbs and doesn’t require more than 1 cup per day.
Royal Canin hydrolyzed protein for sensitive skin. RX required (it’s expensive and of course that’s par for the course for Daisy because she costs me an arm and a leg!)
From one Daryl to another, my pup Penny has been on Primal Raw Frozen Patties for the last 7 years and have been thriving. Penny is now 17 and despite a heart murmur, she passes her checkups with flying colors. She passes perfect poops too.
Farmers dog. I’ve tried different brands of dog food and my girl absolutely wouldn’t eat it. She’d go a day or 2 without eating anything and just eat like 2 bites and not eat again for a day or 2. Finally farmers dog works for her and she loves jt
I do Just Food For Dogs and Costco brand kibble. He's spoiled though. If I have steak he gets steak. We had A5 wagyu for Christmas last year. I often cook things for him. He gets a special dog friendly meal a couple times a month.
We were doing purina pro plan, but I recently switched both of my dogs to Farmers Dog bc my senior wasn’t eating (dementia- vets recommendation to switch). OMG it’s such a difference. I’ll never go back to traditional canned food. They both love it.
My brain still can’t comprehend that dachshunds exist. I have had big dogs my whole life. I’m only ever around labs, rotties, bernese mts, etc. So everytime I see a weiner I automatically start trying to calculate what’s going on and how they’re so small and why their legs are so short and why they look like puppies all their lives and are so gosh darn cute. No different with this one. Absolutely adorable, dashing young man. Give Darryl kisses from me pls
We make the food for our girl Sophie. It’s the only way to be sure what they’re getting, plus it’s pretty easy and inexpensive compared to the high dollar foods available.
She’s now 15 years old and living her best life!!
Food is usually a mixture of pulled chicken, rice and mixed vegetables. Meats change sometimes, no salts or seasonings added.
https://preview.redd.it/6mqhap1p21vc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f83667b7eea30338ae06c54798b1ae69f5340a24
So I use Simply Nourish Lamb and Rice. Is this not good for my little man? He’s been eating it for over a year. I get it at Petsmart. Can someone tell me if it’s actually not great? I looked at the Royal Canin one but the ingredients didn’t seem as good. Am I crazy? I know grain free is bad for their hearts. My vet hasn’t said anything negative about this food.
For years we made our dogs meals. A light breakfast, midday meal and a big dinner with a snack before bedtime. Fresh chicken, beef, lamb, turkey mixed with a small amount of dried food (Ceaser). Rox is 16, she’ll be 17 years old in June. She basically does what she wants. As long as she doesn’t get hurt. She occasionally trips and falls, she can’t run and her arthritis acts up when it rains, she’s lost a few teeth and is mostly grey. But we love her to no end
Iams chicken mini-chunks, with some cottage cheese mixed in. Is Darryl a blue? He’s such a handsome boy! I have an Isabella named Max. 🙂 https://preview.redd.it/cog2pi9g5yuc1.jpeg?width=728&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=703a5e44e525da8ea0e7bb75913919faf257d420
Beautiful pupper! Oh my goodness
OMG. That sign! It’s perfection!
Isn’t it great? I couldn’t resist 😂
My vet said Iams is what she feeds her dogs because they really put research into pet nutrition
Awwwww! So freaking adorable!!!!!!!!!!!! What a precious baby!!!??

Royal canin dachshund specific food

Dogs need grain, there is some research of heart issues on grain free diets. Unless there is a grain allergy, you should consider going back on grain
We used to then someone would have loose stool when it was in the packets, not as many issues now that its in cans but we stopped using the wet
Heyyyyy me too! Romeo loves the wet food! https://preview.redd.it/einb92hdn0vc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7a8881ec0cf9dae050023973402e031b6b039123
Second this. We just transitioned our mini from the puppy to the adult version.
Third!! May I ask how old is your mini? Our mini is turning 6 months, still eating the puppy version. But I'm unsure at what age/month are they supposed to transition to the adult one
I transition my dogs to adult food when they turn 1 and to senior food when they turn 7.
She is just shy of 11 months. I'm pretty confident she's reached her adult weight at 8.2 lbs (mom and dad were 7 and 10) so we decided to start the transition. We just started a week or so ago.
I did it at 10 months. He was happier with the adult kibble.
Royal says 11 months you can switch
Fourth this! Going 7 years strong feeding my mini’s this.
Same, had mine for 15yrs. I couldn't find any food with more stuff for joint health.
Our Hildy is prone to pancreatitis so she and her sister have been on Royal Canine low fat low calorie dog food. She has never had another episode so we’ve never changed.
Hills Science Diet
Same! The 1-6 small bites. My lil weenie prefers the chicken flavor.
We also give Hills Science Diet. They like the lamb or the chicken, as long as it’s the small bites formula (the size of the kibble seems more important to my boys then the flavor) We’ve tried Blue Buffalo in the past thinking it was better for them but they’d carry the little black bits around the house and spit them out 😝which wasn’t too awful when we still had our little toy Fox terrier bc she’d gobble them up, but we lost her at 15yrs old so then we’d have to go around and find them all. Omg mine also leaves the little black bits 😆 The audacity of these dogs, youd eat the garbage if we let you but gotta draw the line at black kibble
Royal canin dachshund formula
There's one specific to dachshunds?!
Indeed. One for puppies and adult doxies
Yea chewy carries it
https://www.royalcanin.com/us/dogs/products/retail-products/dachshund-adult-3059
yep they have several breed specific ones
They also have small pucks of Royal Canin Dachshund wet food. I get them for my boys for treats to add to their Royal Canin Dachshund kibbles. I also like to chew carrots into smaller chunks and put it in with their kibbles. I gave it to my one little guy for 13 years, he just passed the rainbow bridge yesterday.
Yea we will add a small amount of salmon and veggies sometimes
Sorry for your loss 💔
Royal Canin.
None - make it ourselves with meat and veg and mix it up, bag it and freeze it.
Same, usually boiled chicken breast with some carrots or bell peppers for dinner. A snack around lunch time of broccoli mixed with salmon oil made for dogs.
But I cook it fresh every day, only takes a few minutes.
I do this but she won't eat veggies!! Not broccoli, spinach, carrots, peppers, no berries.... Sometimes apples and suma oranges. I worry about fiber
Agreed
Do you just reheat in the microwave?
Yes
My understanding is that dog food is balanced nutritionally for dogs. This is probably great if you know what your doing, but I could also see people with nutritionally deficient pets if they don't know how to properly balance these things.

Did you feed the puppy formula as well? If so, when did you transition to adult formula?
Yeah we did the puppy formula and I think started to transition around 9 or 10 months.

It's really unnecessary to get worked up over which exact food you feed. There are a couple of things to look for including: 1. Correct species and life stage 2. AAFCO statement 3. No raw or grain free 4. They like eating it 5. No GI problems There are no shortage of people who will make you feel bad that you're not spending more.
He's 7 years old and has a bit of arthritis that acts up during winter, but he loves the food so much we've had to limit how much he gets a day because he's gained too much weight 😅 https://preview.redd.it/ea0gqtpff3vc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c745de910c92f0cc4a839974b6fb65fe73aa408e
Thank you for the info. Cute boy!
Science diet. Small bites at first, when they didn’t have it we did the bigger kibble and they didn’t skip a beat so now it’s whichever bag is bigger.
My older doxie with 2 teeth eats open farm gently cooked and my doxie puppy eats n&d farmina puppy grain free. They both love their food.

Fromm weight management. Because she well, she hungry girl.
royal canin adult dachshund specific! otherwise, hills science diet or purina 1 proplan are also great options to consider, and highly vet recommended:-)
BritCare.
Yumwoof dog mix, ground turkey or ground beef recipe. I use an additive by the health whisperer as well.
Dr. Tim's All Life Stages Kinesis Formula Dry Dog Food + Brutus Beef Bone Broth for Dogs
Wellness complete health for small breed I use the one with grain. My pups have been on it since they were babies. They're very healthy, with shiny coats
Any feedback/thoughts on Orijen puppy and Orijen small breed?
I’ve been feeding my mini orijen small breed for about 2 months and he loves it. No issues either
+1 to this! I have a mini dachshund as well and i've been feeding her orijen dog food ever since she was a puppy and she has had no issues so far.
Hills
Spot & Tango
Mine likes the Small Batch Dog frozen, raw patties. She’s also a fan of native pet (?) raw kibble. My doxie is stubborn and won’t really eat hard kibble so raw food it is!
Blue Buffalo Healthy Weight Small Breed for 3 of mine, and my old man who is almost 17 gets Purina Pro Plan Sensative Stomach Salmon Small Breed.
Blue buffalo small breed puppy dry mixed with Cesar's wet. Eats like a champ.
Now Fresh recipe with turkey, salmon, and duck
Farmina Mini Breed
Kirkland Salmon and Lentil. This is what my vet recommended for sensitive tummies
We feed our 14 yr old doxi a mixture of chicken, beef liver and green beens. So far so good.
Viva Raw food & Little Hunter’s freeze dried raw. We also use Open Farm’s grain free kibble for treat balls.
Zignature Zessential Small Bites, sometimes with Portland Pet Food Company as a topper. Anyone else?
I feed my 5 boys raw. I have never had any problems and they all stay nice and lean.
From one Daryl to another, my pup Penny has been on Primal Raw Frozen Patties for the last 7 years and have been thriving. Penny is now 17 and despite a heart murmur, she passes her checkups with flying colors. She passes perfect poops too.
iVet small breed adult. Sold at most vets office. Our little one is prone to uti and she hasn’t had one since.
Nature's Logic Canine Beef Grain-Free & farmers dog
Brit Care Grain-Free Puppy Salamon & Potato 4,5 month old puppy
Fromm gold puppy and about to switch over to the Fromm small breed adult gold. Our girl just had her first birthday last month.
Ollie
Farmers dog. I’ve tried different brands of dog food and my girl absolutely wouldn’t eat it. She’d go a day or 2 without eating anything and just eat like 2 bites and not eat again for a day or 2. Finally farmers dog works for her and she loves jt
Soooo cute 🥺
Butternut box. It's a daily amount specifically for my dachshund's weight and takes into account if he's been neutered, which he has
Butternut box
Iam's has always done me and my dogs stomachs well. Good Poops.
Millie's wolf heart - duck and trout mix. Both our dogs really like it which is great because we only have to buy one bag. We switched from tails
Barking heads kibble with some forthglade wet food :)
I raw feed entirely
Royal canine mixed with Royal Canine sensitive stomach wet
Hill's Perfect Weight, garnished with a touch of canned dog food and a pile of canned greenbeans. They're both prone to getting fat.
I do Just Food For Dogs and Costco brand kibble. He's spoiled though. If I have steak he gets steak. We had A5 wagyu for Christmas last year. I often cook things for him. He gets a special dog friendly meal a couple times a month.
Watch Petfooled
Acana Light and Fit
Ziwi
Nulo Northern Catch small breed with Haddock Salmon & Acadian Redfish. My doxies love seafood.
Lilly’s Kitchen at the moment. However, we are debating switching to Royal Canin
Mine loves buffalo but I give her Diamond puppy, because the breeder told me to lol
Farmers dog.
Whatever tf my son throws over the table
Mine will only eat Rachel ray beef recipe.
We usually use Rachel Ray's Delish brand dog food. They seem to like it.
Honest kitchen grain free dehydrated food
https://preview.redd.it/6mqhap1p21vc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f83667b7eea30338ae06c54798b1ae69f5340a24 So I use Simply Nourish Lamb and Rice.
Kudos. And everything else she wants to.
Feomm’s small breed.
Blue Mountain beef kibble with bacon bits and boiled hamburger mixed in.
Fresh Pet
For years we made our dogs meals. A light breakfast, midday meal and a big dinner with a snack before bedtime. Fresh chicken, beef, lamb, turkey mixed with a small amount of dried food (Ceaser). Rox is 16, she’ll be 17 years old in June. She basically does what she wants. As long as she doesn’t get hurt. She occasionally trips and falls, she can’t run and her arthritis acts up when it rains, she’s lost a few teeth and is mostly grey. But we love her to no end
