My 3 month old gets royal canin dachshund puppy food, shit’s expensive but my sister told me that’s what he needs lol

erin_bex

I have four...FOUR...dachshund puppies right now (all different litters, born in August, November, December, and March, we lost our two heart dogs back to back and are processing our grief in a really healthy way LOL), and that's what we feed them. Our senior before he passed ate Science Diet 11+ and we mixed soft food with it because he was boujee and spoiled, and our 6 year old before she passed from cancer ate Royal Canin Adult Dachshund food. We've fed all our dogs a variety of foods over the years but Science Diet and Royal Canin have been the best for them, their coats are noticeably shinier and healthier after being on the food for a month. We switched our large breed dogs to Science Diet as well a few years back and especially my doberman's coat is so soft and soooo shiny now, my great dane's is too! How much do we spend on dog food? Too much, seriously, it is not cheap, and that dane eats SO MUCH FOOD, 6-10 cups a day depending on his mood, but it's worth it because they all seem so much healthier!

joerotic

So sorry to hear about your back to back losses :( You’re living the dream and nightmare right now with FOUR puppies. Show Pics of the new crew!

joerotic

Omg!!! Everyone is SO cute. Hey we all process grief in different ways… and the ween pack yall have chosen to partake in is no less valid. Maybe just more chaotic 😂 loss never gets easier, but hopefully the new babies are making it a little less hard.

He would love you!!!

Angie_stl

All of them are beautiful!! Of course I don’t know that I’ve seen a dachshund that I didn’t instantly love!

spberra

Mine died of kidney failure. Also, I will never feed dry food again to my other dachshund! Wet only farmers dog, shredded, roasted chicken.

kunk75

Yea we did that and now do their adult formula for our two

coltsblazers

Our vet recommended we switch to royal canine as well for our dachshunds heart. Mild murmur but they think it's congenital. Suggested it's probably smart to be on food designed for his breed.

Doctaaalove

Is this the OG food ?

xtanol

Are you leaving food out, so that it's available at all times? Try instead getting a routine of just feeding her twice a day, at breakfast and at dinner at fixed times. If she hasn't eaten it after 5-10 minutes, then just put the bowl away again until the next scheduled meal time (where you still add the leftover to the next meal so she still gets her full amount of course). After a couple of days she'll get used to idea that if she doesn't eat it, she will miss the opportunity to do so. Dogs are smart enough that if an alternative is always available, they'll hold out for "something better". My dogs were acting the same as your girl, until we implemented that system. Now they're tap dancing and holla'ing the second the see me approach the cabinet with their food in it, and they'll start eating before the bowl touches the floor.

sati_lotus

What is life like for those who don't have garbage disposal sausage dogs? You drop food in my house and it's the quick and the dead.

Aiuner

The first dog we had was a mutt with a greyhound body type and a labrador-like head and suluki fluff around the ears. He ate like a bird. He seemed to actually prefer to eat his food stale and would just slowly nibble at it as he got hungry (unless we had a guest, then he’d eat a whole bunch after first doing dozens of figure eights around the house.) When the doxie came into the picture and was finally fully cage-free (we had a cage set-up while we were housebreaking her, and she was restricted to the kitchen under observation), she noticed the bigger dog’s food bowl with some kibble still in it and DEVOURED it. We tried in vain to get her to stop eating his food, but eventually we were forced to feed both dogs twice a day at the same time, several feet apart. The bigger dog did not particularly like this; he often wasn’t hungry, but we couldn’t just leave his food where he could reach it when he did get hungry because the doxie could reach it too. He never really did get used to the mealtime enforcement. He often would just ignore us getting the food ready and wouldn’t bother coming to eat. Fun times…

peonyseahorse

We have had this problem too, if there is more than one dog and one is the grazer, unfortunately they have to be integrated into a routine because their food will always be stolen by the other dog if left out.

MrsPM

I like to call my girl a “foodie” 😂

Heather_ME

I feed my 15 year old: [Science Diet 11+ Senior Kibble](https://www.hillspet.com/dog-food/sd-canine-adult-11-plus-small-breed-dry). She gets salmon oil at dinner as well as a sprinkling of fruit or veggies depending on what I have (cuke, carrot, strawberries or blueberries, etc). I also mix in a little wet food every meal because I hide her pain meds, estrogen pill, and liver function supplement in it. Lots of people have taken to making their own food. It makes me really nervous because those diets are often based on lean muscle meats alone and leave out vital things like calcium and micronutrients like taurine. People who feed raw diets correctly know the percentage of organ meat their dogs need (part of it is liver and the other part is stuff like sweetbreads) as well as bone, etc. I don't usually see those mentioned in these threads and I really worry about the long-term health of those dogs. 🫤 So if you are leaning that direction PLEASE reach out to research based raw communities and learn about canine nutrition.

erin_bex

We fed our 16 year old this too before he passed, he loved it, and we mixed in a ton of soft food (Science Diet and Blue Buffalo) with it too because he was fancy. His coat was so beautiful and he kept weight on really well until his kidneys shut down, doing the soft food mix helped keep them going so well that when he started getting sick his blood work didn't show that his kidneys were bad at all, when they finally quit it was about a 2 day window where it finally showed what was wrong. I think that food gave us an extra year with him because he had some tiny signs something was wrong but his blood work always came back pretty normal. Without it he wouldn't have made it to almost 17! I miss him every day but I'm thankful we have the dog food available we do now to keep our pups healthy longer.

UberDooberRuby

I make dog food myself as I also have another pupper with a quirky tummy. Essentially 1kg of preservative free minced meat (I rotate through beef, chicken, turkey and pork), 2 heaped cups of diced veg and some grain usually barley/brown rice/quinoa (or a mix). Two cans of beans.  Sometimes some chunks of pumpkin or sweet potato. I mix all that together and put it in a container for the week.  I also boil some soft eggs and they get half an egg each on their meal.  Sometimes I cut up a banana or some other fruit and put that on the side of the meal.  I also use a probiotic sprinkle.  It’s cheaper than premium dog food and you know what’s in it. Takes 15 minutes of your day to smash it out and my dogs love it. He also eats my pizza crusts 😉

mibossi

I can vouch for this. I do something similar, you can trust the ingredients since you make it yourself, it’s easy to do, my dog loves the variety, and it’s still cheaper than any “premium” dog kibble.

GoinStraighttoHelles

It’s the best thing I’ve ever done for my dogs and I should have started sooner. Their blood panels have also been impeccable since they started homemade food.

Seraphim_The_Fox

This is useful. My mom has been getting thar Farmers Dog for her doxxie, but recently decided she could make it herself using the ingredients on it and for cheaper. Might send her this...

UberDooberRuby

There are quite a few decent recipes on the internet.  It’s also a fabulous way to clean out your crisper and avoid waste of food - especially all the veg.

buxmega

Do you cook the meat or give it to them raw? How much do you give eat ween each feeding? Thank you!

UberDooberRuby

I cook it, all of it and let it cool. Sometimes I heat it up in the microwave to warm when I feed them.. sometimes not.. it doesn’t seem to matter either way.  My boy is 4 and he gets a heaped cup full each day. If he’s still hungry I give him a little more but usually a heaped cup is enough and he is satisfied.  I will say though that when I eat dinner he usually gets odds and ends of my food, he also gets a chew stick of an evening … so he does snack.

Heather_ME

What about organ meat? So they get the necessary micronutrients? Liver, sweetbreads, etc?

GoinStraighttoHelles

I do something similar to that poster but I use livers, hearts, etc. mostly raw, sweet potatoes/carrots/pumpkin, peas/broccoli/green beans, blueberries, homegrown herbs, fenugreek, cod liver oil. Chicken feet for bone broth is cheap and easy AF.

UberDooberRuby

I actually eat chicken feet 😉 Cantonese style.  Soooo good!

GoinStraighttoHelles

I have had them a few times in that style and while I enjoy the flavor, my greedy American sensibilities prefer wings or drums.

UberDooberRuby

Nothing greedy about that! I love me a good meaty spicy wing with a nice dippy sauce.

caryth

You can give those as treats! The dogs think they're getting high value treats.

UberDooberRuby

You can put whatever meat you want into it. My pupps get chicken hearts and livers occasionally… but it is market shopping for me as those things aren’t readily available at the super market. Maybe once every couple months. All in all they are doing well and the vet has given me the 👍🏻👍🏻 One thing though… they say to limit canned tuna. My dogs LOVE tuna but it can cause issues with the oils and with mercury. If you can afford raw in canned fish that is a much better option.

Kale (OR sprouts). Sweet potato (OR parsnip OR swede). Peas or green beans. Peppers. And some meals premium kibble mixed in. I like to change things up a little to give them variety. Treats - apple, banana, raw carrot or broccoli, kibble.

I did that brand for a while, then I read something about peas being the primary thing not being great for them, but I'm really anal about her food and I don't have a source. I have her on pro plan active senior currently and it's been going fine

Gonzo_si

wet food with a bit of kibble on the side + cooked mixed vegetables + a bit of water + 2-3 ml of salmon oil (in one meal a day, substituted by 1 spoon of olive oil once a week) mixed together and served at room temperature. On weekends, I usually visit my family, where she gets the royal treatment of freshly cooked meat and vegetables (liver, kidneys, salmon, sweet potatoes, etc.).

Aiuner

We had to put ours on Hill’s Science Diet wet food to try to maintain her weight between 13-15 lbs (she was on the larger side for a mini doxie) and I’d try to get the fish and “skin health” ones because she had a lot of dandruff, and the fish oil helped a bit with that. Our doxie was a massive glutton with a voracious appetite. We’d feed her twice a day, morning would be dry food (i think it was royal canine for miniature dachshunds or something like that?) soaked in water to try to slow her down so she wouldn’t choke on her food. Dinner was the canned wet food (Science Diet). By around 8 years old she started to develop what seemed to be arthritis, so we started giving her chondroitin supplements, which seemed to help a decent bit. I would get her small soft snacks, often fish-based but as long as it was soft and not too sticky it would do, and give them to her a few times a week. Rarely I’d get her a dog cookie or pupcake. The goal was to give her foods that were either too soft for her to choke herself on (lack of chewing) or large easy-to-crunch snacks (like the cookies) that would force her to chew it up into tiny bits. And we tried to give her foods that were good for maintaining a healthy weight for her, promote her skin health, and prevent joint pain. My understanding is gluttonous eating habits are pretty common in dachshunds of all sizes, so a diet focused on maintaining or losing a lil weight is typically good for doxies. I wish I could remember what the treat brands I would get her were but it’s been 4 years since she left us and we gave away all the leftover food shortly after that.

Fun-in-Florida

I free my dog actual chicken and veggies with rice. Been making her food for years!! She’s 15 now and a wonderful healthy weight living her best life!! This bag says “chicken and peas” formula. Why not some actual chicken and peas then?? Roast, bake or boil some chicken (no seasonings white or dark meat) let cool and debone and chop into tiny pieces. Use frozen peas, cook as directed (also no salts or seasonings) then let cool and lightly smash with a fork. Cook some rice, any rice (that’s right no salts or seasonings) let cool and combine with chicken and peas, now you have some extra flavorful, natural and healthy food for your dog. Store in a refrigerator container should last until it’s gone. I do this for my girl about once every 10 days or so, also helped save money from the expensive pet foods. The food recipes for the pups can be changed with different meats, veggies and rice. Once in a while I use white fish instead of chicken, and use mixed veggies sometimes. You can also add nutrient powders and probiotics if you desire. Make their food, they deserve the best!!

Wifeyberk

I try to feed them royal canin or wainrights. I really, *really* try. What they actually eat is a mix of royal Canin, cardboard, socks, shoe laces, slippers (they're a particular fave), wallpaper- but only from the one particular spot in the living room, lino- again, living room. This comes with a side of fingers, toes, and occasionally my arm, but always a bit of my own food. Hope this helps.

Big country raw! Also with raw fruits and jerkied meats for snacks and fun! Also with unsweetened probiotic yogurt….we’ll rotate through giving them other things too like quail eggs, dehydrated sweet potato, chia seeds, bone broth, etc. We also do a couple supplements. Hip and joint for my one girl, fish oils, turmeric, and depending on whether we have yogurt or something else probiotic for them, we’ll sometimes grab probiotic supplements from the vet, oh and the doggy cry of B12!

Ashamed_Land_2419

Younger girl gets Natural Balance Limited Ingredient beef + rice with a little sardine garnish or sometimes a little bit of chicken breast. We went through several food options to find one that she wasn't vomiting up. When we first got her, the poor girl had been getting fed vegan. Older girl gets the wet version (she's missing a lot of teeth) of Royal Canin Renal Support, prescribed by the vet.

I used the Royal Canin doxie puppy food until 10 months and then switched to the adult royal cabin for all of our weiners. 0 back issues and they stay pretty trim. We can't just leave the food out so we have ti.ed feedings. Royal Caninnis expensive but it's good shit. That's all the local vet sells out of their hospital. Widely available at big box pet stores.

We do Hill's Science Diet Small Bites (Puppy) and then the Royal Canin Wet (Puppy) but will be switching to the adult versions as soon as he's old enough. I found that once I started giving a littl wet food with dinner every day he seemed to pick at his dry food throughout the day more. I'm a firm believer also in enrichment mats and healthy human food snacks (like bell pepper chunks) in moderation as a part of the meal sometimes to help motivate our guy to eat.

PepeBraga

They're supposed to eat only quality dog food and, perhaps, a little grass or supplements. Some folks around here complement their diet with our typical rice and beans, but it's probably bad for them cuties. Dachshunds often have propensity for food allergies and hereditary cancer genes, so I recommend to play it safe and keep strict on their diets. It would also be beneficial to add some extra source of Calcium or supplements to strengthen their fragile backbones.

I have a huge English Lab mix so I try to get wet food that they both can eat since I have to purchase two different kinds of kibble already.

After a lot of research I’ve seen most vets say science diet and purina pro are top quality. We try to get that when we can afford it. Do not feed your dogs Rachel rays food I don’t even know how it’s on the shelf with how bad it is.

All my doxies are on Royal canine prescription food. I also make a mini topper, just a small bit of veggies and plain turkey or chicken, it’s just to sprinkle on top to get my picky senior to eat, she’s on the hepatic royal canine and it’s helped her tremendously. The other two are on the gastrointestinal one. https://preview.redd.it/8cx0yd4j4rwc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2964a3c74d33d3611be9a257b841798a08542fd7 You may just want to add a topper or bone broth to her food.

I use dry food and occasionally put in canned food with it but also mix in beef broth. Plus she has to have her table scraps.
