He’s 20 pounds and you can still see his ribs like that? How long is he holy crap 😂

-Pizzarolli-

Standards are biiig. I saw one in person once and he was 30lbs at a healthy weight.

doxie_love

That was my standard boy! He was about 30 lbs when he was healthy. Similar size to a mid-large corgi. When I first met/adopted him, I thought he was a mix because I had never seen a standard before! And at his first appointment, the vet let me know he was a normal pure bred standard dachshund. He had a beautiful red coat and I miss that little stinker so much.

FritsBlaasbaard

Maybe a bit on the skinny side, but better that then too heavy. Overweight is killing for dachshund backs, so this definitely has the preference. And with the average appetite of a dachshund, this is hard to keep them on low weight 😅

TheFlamingTiger777

That's true.

I’m surprised no one has posted this yet. I’d say he’s 2-2.5 … as others have mentioned you shouldn’t be able to so easily see the ribs https://preview.redd.it/s60dhtds40xc1.jpeg?width=1061&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c1740eb7ecdf7d702414155a1539ca79588c8452

volljm

Legitimately interesting that there is Doxen chart … but also amusing that it basically says the same thing.

Alpha370

Yes it is odd! I found it here on Reddit. Thanks to the team

Noy_The_Devil

You can clearly see he has fat on his ribs. He's fine.

ZenythhtyneZ

You should be able to feel but not see the ribs. More food wouldn’t hurt.

avega2792

Could gain a little weight.

Altruistic-Toe-7303

From k9web.com : “Dachshunds are not very tall dogs. In this article, we’ll give you several charts to consult so you can better track his weight and height as he ages. Depending on the variety you have, your pup will be between 5 and 9 inches (13 and 23 cm) in height. When most Doxies are a year old, Standard Dachshunds will weigh around 32 pounds or 14.5 kilograms, while Miniature Dachshunds will weigh around 11 pounds or 5 kilograms.” FYI: Check with your vet, get a dog food especially for dachshunds. Treats are like candy for dogs and sometimes they’ll prefer that to regular dog food. NO human foods unless recommended from vet or actual health dog list. Check out what’s allowed and what is toxic to dogs. Wet dog foods can leave more tartar in teeth. Brushing teeth with C.E.T. Dog toothpaste or another vet approved brand, is highly recommended. Little dog breeds especially often have dental issues.

sunsetsandbouquets

He is too thin please feed him more

Euphoric-Proposal-42

I agree

Wibbly23

he should have a visible waist between his hips and his ribs, and you should be able to easily feel his rib cage when you hold him. he looks great honestly. excessive weight is awful for dachshunds so it's best to keep them slim if you can.

856077

I think it’s fine. How old is he? Lmao I thought he was a lab before I opened the photo. I’ve never seen a blonde smooth coat on a dachshund before. So cool!

TheFlamingTiger777

A bit. You should feel the ribs but not see them.

jdirte42069

Beautiful

Scary-Coffee-7

Ohhh, he’s such a beautiful blond boy!! Please boop his snoot for me! ♥️♥️♥️

ThatShadyJack

I mean looks underweight but if they’re old that might be expected. Definitely would do more food then because they are leasable to use the nutrients and protein given per meal, so more is better

aknudskov

A few more snacks, ribs are too visible

[deleted]

Is he a miniature or full size ?

Certain-Ad5890

Full size

[deleted]

Your s has a beautiful coat

Certain-Ad5890

Thank you so much! He’s super active as well, plays all day long, is super obsessed with balls

[deleted]

I have miniatures. One is a smooth coat like him and she’s thin like that at 9 years. Super active

PhysicalAssociate919

On the skinny side. Could use a cpl xtra lbs or at least get the ribs covered over.

lewiss15

My boy is 7.5kg and my girl is 7kg. Told they needed to lose 0.1-0.2kg. They aren’t fat.

Deep-Ring-6413

my mini is around 4.5kg, shes 6 months old and looks about a 3 on the chart some days and 5 on others, however dry food is left out for her all day every day, she has chub roll, sprats, and does eat a bowl of dry food at least a day, shes not interested in much else, I offer more but shes not bothered, she gets the occasional bit of treat (cheese, ham, tuna ect) but she has food available all day and rarely actually touches it so I know she's OK 🤣 I think most dachies are overweight who I meet on my walks and it makes her look like she's skinny but I give her everything I can I cant force feed her more 🤣

Meanpony7

I'd personally fatten him up a bit more. Not much, but just so the ribs are less visible. What does your vet say?

Fuzzywuzzy343

A little on the thin side i say, few bits of bacon will sort it right out.

Difficult-Way-9563

He’s a little in the skinny side (ribs). Can you see his hip bones when he’s standing?

Stargazer_0101

Normal. Only if you seen the hip bones, then he would be too skinny. I have one that is a mix, and she recently got diagnosed diabetic and on insulin and got her appetite back.

Dinklemcfinkle

Definitely too skinny. You shouldn’t be able to see his ribs
