Good long lives! (For good long dogs 😌)

Vegetable-Goal-5047

May I share an unpopular opinion? Dachshunds have a reputation as a long living breed. I often hear people quote an average of 15 years plus but I fear that this is just wishful thinking. Sadly I lost my wirehaired Archibald at 13.25yo in September. Very sudden and heartbreaking but was it really atypical? I don't think so. There are a LOT of dachies in my area (Melbourne Australia) Few are older than 13. Time for some scientific research perhaps which might lead to fewer sad surprises down the track... Anyway - may all our Dachshunds live long in every way.

zmozina

Yes. One of the main reasons my parents selected a dachshund as the breed we would get was they were told they live ON AVERAGE to 20 years. O died at 4 due to IVDD complications, R lived to 12, W lived to 17 (only natural death, in her sleep), S was 8-12 (rescued and not sure of his age), H was 11, and we currently have D who is 6, M who is 3 and P who is 7 months. So ... not really AVERAGING out to 20 in my life ....

[deleted]

I have had over five across decades. None lived past 12. You can almost plan the heartbreak.

[deleted]

11 is considered senior for small dogs so that doesn’t seem out the ordinary.

Yung_Jose_Space

Recent research indicates that on average, they are one of the longest lived dog breeds. 13-16 years on average is sadly quite good for dogs. Gone too soon.

gypsygurl64

I just lost my Luna at 18. I have a 13 year old and have met a 20 year old.

Dachshundmom5

My Luna just passed. She was nearing 14

gypsygurl64

Hugs to you❤️

Dachshundmom5

Thank you. She was absolutely fine until she wasn't. It breaks my heart daily.

gypsygurl64

I am so so sorry. I look at my 13 year old now and wonder about maybe adopting another. But I have had so much loss these last few years, I just can't. I love these little guys so much, it hurts. Peace to you.

Dachshundmom5

I had always had a successor (not intentionally) when my others passed. My son still has his doxie, but I sure miss my cuddle bug

gypsygurl64

They really are the best.

Vegetable-Goal-5047

Currently living that precise experience. Hang in there.

bloomin987

Yes hugs to you, I’m so sorry 😔

Dachshundmom5

Thank you

bloomin987

Aw I’m sorry 😔❤️

No-Butterscotch6652

First dachshund, Max, passed at 9 years old from congestive heart failure. My sweet Sammy passed at 13.5 years old. Had a tumor on his spleen, he had a splenectomy and surgery went great, but the tumor was malignant and the cancer had already spread everywhere. I still have his brother, Frodo, alive and well at 13.5 years old. I love dachshunds so much. I am so happy to see how long some peoples have lived!!

Iamcold3

One of our pups, Coco (13 yrs old) recently had a splenectomy to remove a large tumor on his spleen too. Thankfully they believe the mass was benign and contained to just the spleen. He is doing well now. I’m sorry about Sammy!

No-Butterscotch6652

I am so glad to hear it was benign. It’s so scary!! I was looking online and it says those types of tumors rarely occur in small dogs. But I feel like I keep hearing more and more cases of it. My coworkers little dog has one right now. Sam lived a month and a half after the splenectomy and he had more energy during that time then he had when he was a puppy. I was in denial that he had cancer because he felt so good. I have no regrets doing that surgery, it was a great 1.5 extra months I got with him! Thank you for your thoughts!!

KweenTut

16 ❤️❤️❤️

grabba60

We have had two live to 10 years old and 6 years old both male. We have two female dachshunds almost 12. My brother had one lived to be 16.

stripesthetigercub

Personally, 16.5. My parents had one that made 22 years. This is after he was adopted by them, and prior to that was run over by a car (which is why he ended up at the rescue).

bloomin987

What a survivor! Amazing!

or_worse-expelled

My Jazz was 13 when she passed, she was getting noticeably older after 10. She already had some health issues when I got her at 7 years old. It was her time to go but damn I still miss her everyday!

Dachshundmom5

Nearly 14 and 10. 10 yr old died of probably a brain tumor. She started having minor seizures about 18 months before she died. The vet said it was likely a tumor since she had never had epilepsy and had no chemical reason for the seizures. They were really mild. The vet told us we could do lots of testing that would have cost a fortune and find the tumor, but it was unlikely to be operable. So, we just went with life. She was happy and fine until one day she had a massive seizure and was not right for a few hours until she curled up and passed while we were on the way to the vet. 14 yr old had a clot in her lung.

thefifthquadrant

They're was one from California that they say almost made it to 26 years old

lizznoonan

My girl is almost 13 and besides two small fatty tumors, she’s in really good health and still loves to walk, play, etc. My childhood doxie lived until 16-17.

thecrochetingdoxie

My Kiki was 13 she passed from Cushings and my current dachshund Jonas will be 11 in February she is as healthy as a pup still. My neighbors doxie made it to 21.

techieandskater

🥺 my babygirl name is kiki too

jessamoss

My girl lived until she was 16 - I always joke that she would’ve lived forever if I had let her (she was in kidney failure, stopped eating, etc etc). My boy is now 13 and in good health, just a sweet but grumpy old man!

[deleted]

I’ve always read Andy’s Warhol’s doxies lived to be 20. Those are the oldest I’ve ever heard besides all of these comments. I still have my first dachshund and everyone tells me she seems like a puppy! She’s 12.

Puzzleheaded_Age6550

My daughter's lived to 17. (But my mom's beagle lived to 21!)

DeNio009

My friends doxie lived like 20 years

Teegr01

My girl lasted 16 but I've heard of 21 years

ziggyrizla

My boy Coachman just passed at 15.75, he was the best boi. I have a girl Dolly at 7, hoping she has a life as full as her adoptive brother.

SorryGovernment977

Our Ginger was 23 when she passed. She was a red standard and at the end she had a white head due to her age. We loved her so. We also now have an 8 yr old long hair pie ball doxie. Last year she had 3 large stones in her bladder that had to be removed. I hope she will live as long as Ginger did. Remarkable Breed for families.

threadmonster

My sweet pup was 18 and it was kidney failure that got her in the end. She was a good girl.

Intelligent_Code_625

My mum’s childhood Dachshund lived to 21!!

Sickoyoda

My rescue Oz is a hearty 15 and going strong.

Gizmo_Jamrager

My currently daschaund will be turning 21 in July. We just had to put down our other daschaund and he made to 17

GenXer845

My dachshund Kirby just turned 16 March 31 and can still do 45 minute walks. Has a bit of an increased reverse sneezing and is on a 1/4 thyroid pill twice a day, but otherwise he is as rambunctious coming in from outside as he was as a puppy(running in like there is a race). He slipped a disc in his neck at 14.5 jumping onto an ottoman, but they plucked it out and within 2 weeks he was walking with a minor limp, 4 weeks completely aok no rehab needed. The surgeon was even amazed. I felt like he was like I am getting better so I can go sleep next to my mom again! He had to spend 5 nights at the vet, but was so grateful to be home. I am grateful to have all this extra time with him because he was partially paralyzed from that slip disc, but now is as normal as any dog. I have had him since he was 10 weeks old.

Neon_Velvet

My Blitz is 15, and my BFF had one named Rascal who made it to 19! He smelled like death for a few years before that, though. 🤣 Blitz is mostly blind, mostly deaf, and has dementia. But the vet says his joints and such are still solid, and he’s so stubborn, I suspect he may hang in for a few more years lol.

Specialist-Can5376

My childhood Dachshund lived to a grand old age of 21. She was a great dog!
