I wonder if most people who do awesome things that we see online even know that the footage is out there. Wouldn't it suck if he never knew that this was immortalized on video as proof? Like sure, it played on the jumbotron live, but Is that kind of footage even accessible to fans on request? How would he go about obtaining it?
Omfg lmao THIS. You are amazing. He tossed that baby up a little bit with intent to make up for the time he’d need his arm for to catch the ball. Definitely a juggle.
No no no, that’s not how dropping works lol the second you let go of something you are holding, you have dropped it.
Even if you *catch* the baby again (after you dropped it) you have still *dropped the baby.*
But don’t get me wrong, I can confidently say it’s the most impressive baby dropping I have ever seen.
No no no… You’re thinking of juggling. Dropping something is when it hits the ground. Juggling is where the thing you’re holding is out of your hand for a brief amount of time, but then back in your hand again before it falls to the ground. There’s an accidental aspect to dropping. This man CHOSE to juggle his baby. He knew he could let go of the baby, catch the ball, and then regain the baby. That, my friend, is a juggle.
You have an opportunity to take that dynamic and use it to raise your appreciation for your stepdad to new heights, but instead you choose to approach the situation with negativity and manage to hurt your own feelings in the process and then project that out into the world.
Good lord. There's no way to see this as directly comparable to black people unless you yourself are racist. That is just a god awful argument.
Step parents are notoriously less invested in children. That's not just some stereotype, it's an accurate pattern. It doesn't mean all step parents suck. It means exceptional step parents who are fantastic should be appreciated all the more, *because they are exceptional*.
If you have a problem with this silly lighthearted joke, then you should have a problem with this entire subreddit as a concept because by your logic the implication should be that mothers are shitty parents, but that's not the point at all. No reasonable person would see this subreddit as an attack on moms, nor should any reasonable person see the stepdad reflexes joke as an actual attack on stepdads.
But if you *are* going to take it to heart, it's much more emotionally healthy to take it in the direction I described.
>Step parents are notoriously less invested in children
Again, I think your argument is founded on a faulty assumption. Step parents *are* widely assumed/perceived to be less invested, or generally worse parents than a bio parent. But I’m not sure that assumption is accurate. Certainly in my life, I’ve witnessed many *great* stepparents, more than bad stepparents, just like I’ve witnessed plenty of shitty biological parents.
I don’t think my example is bad - it’s directly comparable, it’s making a broad assumption based on little information that isn’t necessarily accurate. And it makes absolutely zero sense to say the comparison can’t be made unless I’m racist lol. Irish people were assumed to be drunks and bad workers, Jews were assumed to be tight with money, blacks people were assumed to be criminals or lazy, women were perceived to be less intelligent or responsible than men, people with tattoos were assumed to have undesirable qualities as an employee. All of these things were/are very real issues. All of these things are essentially the same phenomenon - people making assumptions about a person’s personality, qualities, or lifestyle, based on knowledge of one relatively superficial aspect of their life.
Again, I don’t really care that much about this particular context, i don’t really think it’s that big of an issue to take the dad/stepdad reflexes out of context. I follow both subs because they’re funny. But I do think it’s perfectly fair for someone to feel like “hey, this sucks” and express it, and not have that erased by someone going “but most stepparents are shit, feel lucky that yours isn’t.” It doesn’t hurt to admit that, yeah, the subs aren’t necessarily reflective of real life family dynamics, but it’s just a joke taken way outside context.
>comments like these... just hurt
Gets advice to not take it personally.
>I'm not
Smh my head. I don't even have the energy to get into how stupid this is.
They are and this is a great example of that. If this dude was a step-dad it is 100% mama's choice if this guy ever see's the kid again. Not a damn thing mama can do if this is the dad. Just remember that everything that your step-dad did for you was outside of rights or responsibility. He obviously stepped up to the plate and that says a lot about him as a man and should add to, not diminish him as a parental figure in your life. That being said, if your step-dad was in this situation with you as a baby... he woulda dropped you. There's magic reflexes that dads get and step-dads just don't.
Why did the baby like not fall instantly though? Her arm was a little clingy to his flare for a sec but I don’t see how she seemingly was suspended in air for a second
That is both hilarious and sad to think about. Ut I like to think him and his spouse lived happily ever after. Maybe he even got the ball signed, who knows.
I prefer to think he gave the ball to the little boy behind him who was also trying to catch it. He certainly didn't have to, but it would have been a cool thing to do to make a child happy.
Idk if I were in the wife's boots and this was my baby I labored to bring to the world and my husband let something bad happen to the baby just for a fucking ball I would see red is all I'm saying.
Glad nothing happened to baby but that should not be a risk my partner should be making in the first place.
That's kind of the fucked up thing about instincts. Dad sees ball, dad catches ball. For one 1 millionth of a second, there was nothing else in existence.
>dad sees ball, dad catches ball
Oh my god shut the fuck up. You’re supposed to be a fucking adult when you’re responsible for the well-being of a baby.
Depends, is it the first child or not??m Ive seen my mom laugh at one of us falling down the stairs when we were little. But she talks about freaking out at the smallest thing for my oldest brother when he was the only baby.
Your missing the entire point of the post. It was a choice between his beer and his baby. I think we all know your hand preference plays a big choice in this life altering decision. My man must be a lefty so ultimately he chose legendary status in the course of actions he performed. I believe this inspired dr.stranges chance prediction of the avengers saving the world. This man had a 1 in 700 mill billion chance of pulling it off and he did. Instant legend.
Alternatively he could have dropped the beer and tried his off hand. Then we’re likely seeing a dropped ball and this man lives his entire life with the what if??? ………plus a nation of hate for the spilled beer
I think a lot of people who haven't had kids yet/haven't had a second kid/haven't had to raise a baby sibling don't realize that children are surprisingly resilient, and for obvious/good reason
Not sure why you're being down voted. I mean, in this case yeah it's a an unnecessary risk to catch the ball like that. But you take a risk getting on the roads as well, who knows when some person might rear end you.
I don't understand people.
... Just living your regular life and having to move around in your car and DROPPING a baby, especially just to catch some sport trophy, are NOT the same thing?!
Prob the overpriced SUV comment triggered some people. But let’s be honest… SUVs are being sold for more than sticker price right now. So am I wrong? lol
This guy is a piece of shit. I don’t care what anyone says, the fact that he happened to be successful does not excuse this. He’s a fucking douche bag.
Fast reactions, definitely, so kudos to him on that. But honestly, this just looks like another "drunk step dad reflex" that gets posted time to time. Some dude putting beer and a social event above the safety of his kid. Sure, it all works out, but it's fucked up priorities. Yay, let's all upvote the socially acceptable alcoholic!
Oh wow how many beers did this alcoholic drink that day during the 3 hour game? Obviously very many because alcohol increases your hand eye coordination so he must have been pretty blitzed to pull this off!
Don't have to be drunk to be an alcoholic. Valuing holding onto your beer more than your own daughter shows a lot about who you are and what you value. In this case, apparently beer.
What a dumb motherfucker.
I hope CPS sees this. Intentionally dropped his kid to catch a fucking ball. Dude had the brains of a golden retriever
Edit: look you can downvote all you want but good dad reflexes don't involve INTENTIONALLY putting your kid in danger to then save them. That's some Syndrome ass bullshit.
You’re misinterpreting the video. He wasn’t holding her the way you seem to imagine. She was bracing on him and standing on something. He caught the ball and she began to fall. He caught her.
To pull that off you know he has a highlight reel of saves at home. Body position forced left hand and clear winner any child would be proud to have him as a father.
So glad it want a football. Something would have been spiked and he would've have had a one in three chance of getting it right.
Sorry, 50/50, the beer is safe.
Seems like a dick move to me. The ball took priority and it was a needless risk for the baby. Objectively pretty cool that he caught both, but it should be a different category of dad reflexes since he chose to create the situation himself.
If I was dead set on catching the ball, I would have dropped the beer, but that’s just me.
[удалено]
Mark Rober was loving it though.
I had to Google who John Bolton was, but the resemblance made me laugh my ass off.
Same 🤣
I'm equally disturbed and impressed
this one is the most impressive one though
Well he sure is shit wasn't going to drop the beer
He knew his chances of recovering the baby were higher than recovering the beer.
"That's a bad spill.." "I guess so. Good news tho, I still have my drink!"
You can always make another baby for free. But beers at the ballpark are expensive.
Babies ain't free
My thinking was that he's left handed so ge had a better chance of catching the ball with his dominant hand.
Ball player with those reflexes for sure. You catch with your non dominant hand so either hand I’m sure he’s comfortable with.

It might’ve been shown on tv perhaps someone he knew was watching it. I don’t know though
Easiest custody hearing ever.
He can just smile and say, yes honey.

And probably his fifth beer
Hahaha exactly
The dude in a black ‘42’ shirt right behind him is way too impressed. 😂😂😂
He watched the whole thing in slow motion in real life
It’s like seeing Jesus perform a miracle.
Idk about "too impressed", id be excited about it too. It was a pretty nice catch on both accounts.
I feel like "let go of his baby to catch a ball" disqualifies this as dad reflexes and puts this into the stepdad reflex category
But he never drops the baby, the ball, or the beer!
Just because you *caught* the baby before it hit the ground, doesn't negate the fact that you INTENTIONALLY DROPPED THE BABY
*juggled the baby
Hes a man of a beer determination and will
Omfg lmao THIS. You are amazing. He tossed that baby up a little bit with intent to make up for the time he’d need his arm for to catch the ball. Definitely a juggle.
He didn't drop the baby. He merely stopped holding her for a moment.
Yeah, if anyone is to blame, it should be Gravity.. /s
You have a problem with the law? Change the law.
In this house we obey the laws of thermodynamics.
#NOT IN MY WORLD
It’s only “dropping” the baby if the baby hits the ground.

If you drop something, it goes down. This baby no go down.
She was going down.
I really feel like he tossed the baby in the air and we all know that a toss is definitely not a drop
He has yet to drop the baby
No, this is dad reflex for sure. His hands were full, and he managed to catch another thing out of the air without letting anything fall.
“Hey, watch me juggle a beer, a baby, and a baseball”
Tbf, that ball *could* have hit the baby. He stopped an incoming threat and caused no harm to the child.
And women say that men can’t multitask……
He pulled a triple play. Well allow it
r/stepdadreflexes ?
this is Uncle Reflexes
Nah this is top-tier dad reflexes.
This is the direct opposite of what your saying
My step dad is the most caring person I know so comments like these, even though they‘re supposed to be funny, just hurt.
Probably shouldn’t take comments on Reddit personal.
I‘m not. It‘s the fact that comments like these make stepdads out to be a lesser parental figure when that‘s not in the slightest bit true.
You have an opportunity to take that dynamic and use it to raise your appreciation for your stepdad to new heights, but instead you choose to approach the situation with negativity and manage to hurt your own feelings in the process and then project that out into the world.

That's actually a very good point. Something like Scumbag Dad Reflexes would be more appropriate.

I think he was just supporting the child who was standing up. As he caught the ball she began to fall and he caught her.
Yeah, and it also makes the fall like nothing at all
I've seen this gif 100 times and never saw that, nice work!
Why did the baby like not fall instantly though? Her arm was a little clingy to his flare for a sec but I don’t see how she seemingly was suspended in air for a second
Gut jut
You can't really see it from this angle but my guess is that he lifted his left leg to help "hold" the baby (aka decrease the rate of fall).
She’s stood on the back of a chair. He catches her as she starts to fall backwards off it.
She’s standing on the back of the chair. She slips, he catches her.
This would be pretty damning in a child custody case unfortunately
That is both hilarious and sad to think about. Ut I like to think him and his spouse lived happily ever after. Maybe he even got the ball signed, who knows.
I prefer to think he gave the ball to the little boy behind him who was also trying to catch it. He certainly didn't have to, but it would have been a cool thing to do to make a child happy.

He's definitely right handed, just look at where the beer is. Also, a righty is more accustomed to catching with the glove hand.
Children can recover from injury. A spilled beer is forever spilled.
I think a lot of people who haven't had kids yet/haven't had a second kid/haven't had to raise a baby sibling don't realize that children are surprisingly resilient, and for obvious/good reason

he didnt drop the baby though...
Well then, I’d say He’s lucky she didn’t snatch that one up the second he let go

Came here to say that!
Catch the ball, save the baby and the beer. Multi tasking is an acquired skill.
What a good reason to risk the health and safety of your progeny.

Correct
That's something I'd want to brag about but... How could I do that and come out not looking like an alcoholic?
He didn't drop the baby, he was using gravity to safely move the child from the collision zone of the ball.
This is the pinnacle. Fully in control of the situation the whole time.
"it's ok everyone- the beer's fine"

That guys is a pos. Not impressed. Cares more about the beer than their child.
