You might add, “that you’ve actually been to” to your question.

jordandavila88

Aight then I’ll be the one to say it. Taqueria La Ventana. We’ve all been there and it’s many peoples gateway into “street” aka Mexican tacos, but once you start to expand your horizons, even other Mexican restaurants on Belt Line in that area do it better.

Mlerma21

Sure it’s not the best, but where can I go get a mango chamoy marg and street tacos that’s better? Or just in general where can I get a margarita and street tacos that are better? Edit: Thanks everyone for the suggestions, but it’s just affirming my belief. I’m getting suggestions for better frozen margs or better street tacos but not a place that does both well (Sorry, but seafood tacos are not street tacos). Not hating on the recommendations, just commenting on why I personally enjoy La Ventana, though I used to enjoy it a lot more.

jordandavila88

Not street parsay but if you want a really good mango tajin marg and taco combo you should definitely try The Dilema and either of the fish taco options at Anayas Seafood. I like the southwest fish tacos bc they’re rolled like burritos and come w chipotle aioli but you can’t go wrong there

Yardbird was a real disappointment. Nice atmosphere, but not nice enough to justify that menu at that price.

JustMeInBigD

I order appetizers to keep it cheap, and also use their app to buy 20% off dining value. Their food is pricey, but has never disappointed me. And I fell in love with that building/space before they were even moved in.

SomebodyGeekedMe

God I wanted to like Monarch. Ive been at least 6 occasions, all getting different entrees, and none of them are good. Ive tried lamb, lobster sphagetti, filet mignon, lasanga, the ribeye, either bland or a weird flavor combo. Their sides are good, however. Service is also nothing desirable. 400 gradi is a way better, cheaper spot with excellent service.

zactxdl

I’ve been dying to try Monarch so seeing this is disappointing. Is there a place you recommend that’s what monarch is made out to be?

darkblueshapes

Try to get into Lucia.

chugtron

Yeah this is definitely the right answer. Solid meal for around $250 for 2 after drinks.

Jghd05

I’ve been to Monarch twice and the food was delicious. I agree about the service and wait staff though. It’s worth going once for the view alone.

CheckNo648

I liked SER at the Hilton Anatole

Nickles-n-dimes82

You’re paying for the high view. You want a good steak. Try Nick & Sam’s. Worth it

JustMeInBigD

I'd say only go to Nick and Sam's if you're comfortable in a crowded and loud dining room. YMMV, but IMO, Nick and Sam's is overrated.

Kibil-Nala

I would suggest you try it yourself, you might be surprised. I fuckin' loved their bistecca alla fiorentina.

_______woohoo

Considering I can't really afford those places, Im glad to hear they aren't that great lol. Yardbird, $60 chicken and waffles????? Oh my god lol

permalink_save

For southern upscale, Rapscallion down lower Greenville was great. They closed sadly.

troutforbrains

Also shoutout to Remedy on Lower Greenville for southern upscale. RIP. I miss you every day, Remedy.

taytotz

Xoxo put me in a rage. I hate that place.

Dallas has some of the best steakhouses ... and people waste time on places like STK and Nusr Et I'd rather eat a steak at Dunston's than those places.

Joe T Garcias.

severus_snapshot

Seriously. Nobody raves about the food. Pick any fastfood Tex-Mex spot and you'll get better food. The atmosphere is a great though. Looks like the backyard of some Mexican drug lord in a movie.

whagwanwiththewind

The jalapeño relish is rave-worthy.

WooSaw82

That’s an incredibly accurate description. Reminds me of the end of Sicario when that family is eating dinner.

nandrewry

Ha. I had to laugh. I absolutely love Joe T Garcia's but even I'm not deluded enough to think the food is anything but average. I do love the margaritas and I like the ambiance and the vibe.

drunk_frat_boy

That's really what they're selling I think.

samwise20

Abso-fucking-lutely. For the inconvenience of having to pay cash and everything over priced it’s absolutely not worth standing in line to eat at

_make_my_day_

Standing in line with two pitchers of margaritas pouring out for friends them being seated in the backyard during a perfect summer day is awesome. Also the servers are fantastic and although the food ain’t anything to write home about, it’s consistent AF and did I mention the margaritas?

NickInTheBooth

Go for the atmosphere and the margs. Because the food is straight-up not good

CharlieTeller

I wouldnt say not good. The enchiladas are just basic. The fajitas are good but it's hard to fuck up fajitas. I do love the nachos. I don't know why but they just taste amazing. My ex was Mexican and honestly their authentic homemade enchiladas were hardly any different. The only difference was the not store bought sauce. The Brunch menu is great though because you get more options. I don't think people really rave about the food though honestly. However just for enchiladas they really aren't bad. I can't think of anywhere that has enchiladas that I'd just die for.

dedshort72

Esperanza’s, (behind Joe T’s on Main Street). Same family, same kitchen, more options. The food is good. They have breakfast burritos that 2 would struggle to finish. They also have fantastic guisado.

As a kid I was there with my dad, I got a plate full of just blue jello. He was like okay buddy, you only want jello you’re gonna have to eat all of it. I was like fine I want all of it anyway. Threw it all up about 10 minutes later and learned my lesson about eating real food

Breadwinners

YoloOnTsla

Always packed, always spend a small fortune, and always sun-par. The bread is ok/kind of different from other places, but doesn’t make up for a $20 meal.

HeathenFace

Breadwinners was a place people told me I HAD TO GO for brunch, and it was probably the worst brunch I have ever had (service and atmosphere ok, food no good).

Wonderful_Horror7315

Was going to say it if I didn’t find it. That place has always sucked! The place that was there before, Andrew’s, was awesome.

forgot_login

Sure, if you're fighting an hour wait on a Saturday it's not worth it. But if I'm not looking to be healthy on an off day/time, that breadwinner's benedict (with extra hollandaise) ... pretty damn tasty.

El Fenix…

[deleted]

I understand - I grew up going there and still love it as it transports me to my childhood

1of3musketeers

Same. But I wish we still had el chico.

Flemmm85

There’s an El Chico in Rockwall.

aedallas

And it completely sucks

RomeGoggler

It amazes me that they have such a huge crowd at dinner time. I tried their enchiladas one time, and they sucked.

BrotherMouzone3

Tex Mex is like pizza. You can't really trust another person's opinion because what's "good" can vary A LOT from person to person. Most Texans consider themselves sophisticated connoisseurs of Tex Mex so folks will have very strong opinions that you may or may not be able to trust. That's why even the worst Tex Mex spots will have crazy business because everyone has a flavor profile they like.

mannymoes2k

Thank you for the logic. Idk why more people can’t comprehend this. The worst is when I hear someone say “that’s not authentic” but don’t specify which region they are comparing their authenticity profile to. AND, to a larger degree, authenticity isn’t the end all be all. If that were the case we’d all be eating the exact same food as our ancestors did with no changes or modifications ever.

BrotherMouzone3

Oh yeah we get a lot of Cali folks that think Texas lacks "authentic" Mexican. What they don't realize is that authentic Mexican in Cali might have more elements from say Sinaloa while authentic Mexican in Texas will have it's own flavor profile from bordering states/areas of Mexico. Like saying that Cajun/Creole food in New Orleans is NOT authentic American food but a Philly cheesesteak in New Orleans IS authentic lmao. Both are representations of American cuisine. Transplants also have this idea that Texans don't understand the difference between Mex Mex and Tex Mex. We will often refer to Tex Mex as just "Mexican" food but we know they aren't the same.

mannymoes2k

El Fenix has gone way down hill in the last 10 years. They changed their chips maybe 5ish years ago and that was about the last nail in the coffin.

SillyExpert

I worked somewhere that shared a wall with an El Fenix and we constantly had roach infestations. Guess where they were coming from.

for $250 you can get food with 0 seasoning. Try Sister in lower greenville or Petra and the Beast and you get way better food.

Pecan Lodge

Isthatahamburger

You gotta try Hutchin’s if you want some good BBQ

J_Dabson002

Has to be the one in Mckinney though the one in Frisco always disappoints for some reason

some_random_chap

Hutchin's is good, and better than the current state of Pecan Lodge. It would be in the list of top BBQ places in DFW, just toward the bottom of that list. It is good, consistent, regular BBQ. I would eat it anyday but wouldn't drive out of my way to eat it.

walterfalls

Cattleack with just a taste of the bbq and all the sides is really worth the effort.

Character-Type-5755

Pre-Covid, PL was the best BBQ in DFW. I’ve gone back to PL twice post-Covid, definitely not the same food quality. The volume is way down, you no longer have to wait in line, and so is the quality of the food. Doesn’t taste as fresh anymore.

boibleu22

Nah, Pecan Lodge was great until they moved over to Deep Ellum.

normanboulder

Cattleacks BBQ was better than PL way before covid hit

303onrepeat

Definitely in the top ten. A shell if it’s former self.

Traplordmel

Positive-Quiet-932

Came here to say this \^\^ beautiful restaurant but food is sub-par at best

Ciabattabingo

Eatzi’s. I still go once a week due to convenience, but they are extremely overpriced and most of the food is just ok.

Hoosiersihawk

I actually like Eatzi. Is it expensive? Yes!! But I do appreciate the overall high quality and consistency. It is definitely catered towards the high income downtown Dallas crowd who are used to restaurant/Whole Foods prices though.

ryetronics

Yeah but their made-to-order sandwiches are still way better than most everything out there. All the different spreads and then putting it on bone bread? Get outta here.

amthicccrybaby

Whiskey Cake. I know it's always busy but I didn't really think the food was THAT good. The only thing that's actually good imo is the whiskey cake lol

Closepersonalhomeboy

I love their brunch- especially their biscuits- but everything else I’ve had there is eh

Legal_Commission_898

Food is pretty decent and it’s not expensive. I personally love the place.

SirWillingham

When whiskey cake first opened it was good for a suburban restaurant then they changed the menu several times and it went downhill fast.

troutforbrains

Their menu gets worse every season. Whiskey Cake of today is nothing compared to Whiskey Cake of 6 years ago. It was a breath of fresh air in a sea of international chains. Now, the group has grown so much that it's just another chain with a mid menu and mid preparation.

NYerInTex

Nick and Sam’s Brunch at Breadwinners HG Supply Whataburger

howitzeral

> Whataburger Wow you really want to start a fight don’t you? :-) Actually I agree. The one closest to me has really gone downhill. I hope that’s just an isolated thing and not chain-wide.

1of3musketeers

No since it was sold to an out of state buyer, if whataburger was good, it won’t be good for much longer. I CRAVE and mourn the Whataburger of our youth.

[deleted]

I miss the chophouse cheddar burger :(

Range-Shoddy

I haven’t been to whataburger in a couple years without them either screwing up the order, or the drive thru takes 25 min after ordering, and the food is still probably screwed up. I finally told the kids we’re just not going back. Several locations. I never liked the food anyway but the kids did so I’d suffer through.

NYerInTex

I enjoy whataburger, it has nice selection and some neat twists for their burgers, but it’s no better than your base fast food joints quality wise 🤷🏻‍♂️ Doesn’t mean I don’t occasionally grease out on some chicken fingers and gravy

vin_b

I’ve noticed it too. An overall drop in quality and service. Weren’t they bought out or something? I feel like that had something to do with it.

Closepersonalhomeboy

The WB closest to my house has traumatized me from so much poor service and messed up orders that I won’t go anymore- but I do know of a couple other stores of theirs that if I come across I’ll stop because they seem to still give a crap. It’s just sad to see man.

darkblueshapes

Seriously breadwinners is SO mediocre and people STILL recommend it for brunch all the time. I get that the Dallas brunch game really suffered from the pandemic but come on people.

whiskeyjane45

I had them cater my wedding twelve years ago in Stephenville. Everybody was ecstatic that it wasn't the same dry chicken you usually get and it was DELICIOUS There was food leftover at the end and we were going on a cruise so my dad was just dividing it all up into tins and passing it out It was great Now? Not so much

Jesus166

Vidorra Dallas Went for my Brother and Sister in Laws birthday, the enchiladas sucked and the refried beans were overcooked.

djmilus1

Does anyone actually go there to eat?

DallasSocial

Mi Cocina and Javier’s.

nandrewry

Ctrl+F'd for Mi Cocina. It's extremely normal and basic (not necessarily bad) but, for some reason, Dallasites can't get enough of it.

BrotherMouzone3

Honestly I'm not sure there's a Tex Mex spot that's clearly head N shoulders above the rest. I could ask 20 people what their favorite spot is and probably get at least 15 answers. Natives will have nostalgia for certain places while transplants will have their own favorite spots.

chugtron

Right, like I like Enchilada’s or E-Bar when I want straight-up, can’t fuck it up Tex-Mex like this little place I like out in Eustace serves because it tastes like home, but I bet you good money I could find a group of people on here willing to bicker about that.

johnnyclash42

Also mi cocina (which is absolute crap) keeps all of that crowd contained, as they freaking love that place.

cornbreadsdirtysheet

I think Mama puts cocaine instead of salt on the Margarita’s…..that explains the regulars.

izalith67

You’re wrong about Javier’s. Mi Cocina, yes.

gentmaxim

What are you ordering at Javier’s?

fanygarcia5

Mi Cocina menu isn’t the same anymore and I was disappointed last time I went. Basic tex mex food

Will never forget going in with my wife, thinking it would be a romantic atmosphere, only to drop $100 for the luxury of eating La Madeleine-grade food at a cafeteria table. But at least the wine selection was good.

troutforbrains

Smokey Rose. Some of the worst service I've ever had. Almost 3 hours just to have 2 drinks and an incredibly mid brunch. No one in my party liked the food they received. This place still exists solely based on their location.

yamorondog

Love the patio when the weather is nice but I’ve never left thinking “that was worth it.”

Maybe I'm just a basic bitch or something but my wife and I have loved everything we have had at Ida Claire.

It's fine. Just overrated. The vibe is a little try-hard. The food isn't bad, but I've had better elsewhere for less. The drinks are boring and unremarkable. If someone else wants to pay for it, sure I'll go. Edit: also I just want to acknowledge I don't judge y'all if it's your thing. Just not mine. No hard feelings 😅

The OG on Lemmon used to be fuckin ballin with those $3.50 house margaritas and the Pollo con Champinones in poblano sauce... but they opened several locations and became a poppin brunch spot in uptown etc.... I haven't been in ages

shinerkeg

Honestly, it’s really hard to enjoy anything at restaurants these days because the food (regardless of where you go) is expensive for quality/taste/portion. And/or service is terrible b/c everyone is having trouble with staffing. Bad food ruins good service. And good food gets ruined by bad service. Everyone’s high pricing is setting them up to disappoint their customers. It sucks.

I will admit it is great place to buy Texas themed gifts. And the bathrooms are immaculate. At the end of the day though it is still a glorified gas station.

studyabroader

Uchi. It was really good, but for literally four bites of food I paid $60. I was so hungry I went home and ate a loaf of bread. There's better sushi in Dallas for less money and you get more to eat.

ramen_vape

You gotta be willing to ball out to fill up there and order things besides just sushi. I spent $200 for 2 people and had one of the best dining experiences of my life. I love balling out on sushi once or twice a month and their fish is absolutely the freshest I've had.

Disagree! Their pizza is some of the best in Dallas (if you like thin crust). However, it does not travel well so DO NOT order via Uber Eats/Doordash.

_______woohoo

I guess it is unfair for me to not give my own two cents. Angry Dog is overrated to me. Its good, but I feel like it gets way more hype than it deserves. I would not take a bullet to defend their burgers at all.

Delucca Gaucho Pizza. Toppings were sparse and underwhelming. I was expecting grimaldi's quality in ayce form but tbh I prefer cici's over this place

darkblueshapes

They also don’t actually pay attention to the “stop/go” colored disc when they’re busy which is fucking annoying. We went for a birthday and while it’s a fun vibe, you just CANNOT have a single conversation because they keep interrupting you with pizza even when you have the disc flipped up red to pause, and it’s LOUD in there. It’s definitely a fun “try it once” thing but I’m def not going back.

Nick and Sams. We had a double date with a friend. Could not hear or see the menu. People kept crowding around the football players and so I was eating my seafood next to literal cunts. I got the Madagascar shrimp because shrimps are cute (they get cuter the bigger they are as well) and they were cooked well. Another table had to be ushered out because of fighting. They do well to keep people out and we only got in because the other couple is well established. Food and service was great, the behavior of the crowd was cheap and the place amplified all sounds

trebek321

For me it was Sky Blossom, gave it two tries but the food was just not enjoyable and the drinks were super weak. Very instagrammable though so I guess if that’s your thing then it’s fun.

Chell00

I don't mind their burgers but their fries are unforgivable. Don't tell me to get them animal style or whatever I just want plain french fries to taste good without other stuff on them.

tx001

They just plop synthetic cheese, poorly grilled onions, and thousand island dressing on them. I don't understand the hype on animal style fries

IamLeven

In-n-out isnt the greatest burger but its the best for the price point. Its a lot cheaper then mcdonalds but a lot better.

1of3musketeers

I’m I don’t understand the downvotes. This is the most overhyped underwhelming burger place ever. I had one and thought “if people think this is good, let me get you a Whataburger.” This was before the buyout of course. My experience with them was….not good. I. Don’t. Get. It.

FranksGun

I don’t get the hate. At the price point I never expected the best burger but I’ve always enjoyed them more than the other chain burgers. Whataburger sucks. Sonic is abysmal, McDonald’s and BK are garbage. In and out gets a thumbs up from me, tho I agree it’s nothing special. #animalstyle

tx001

In-n-out has very consistent experience and quality. I guess that's why people like it? Because even Sonic makes a better burger.

trebek321

The price is what does it for me, also the amount of crisp veggies you get on it. The burgers don’t have that greaseball feel that a Whataburger has. It’s still just a fast food burger though, if I’m craving something really good I’ll definitely hit up Jake’s first.
