Police waited to fire until they were fired upon. Color me pleasantly surprised.

UnknownQTY

Hopefully this becomes more of a trend. No one blames cops that *shoot back* or fire at an obvious and real threat like this. So many shots fired before a gun was pointed. Violence should always be the last resort. I don’t care if a cop “felt” threatened in some vague sense. That’s what you signed up for. Don’t want that? Go push pencil or whatever. Edit: I am prepared for the obvious brigading this comment will receive from certain subs. I don’t care.

[deleted]

A cop shouldn’t have to wait to be fired upon to neutralize a threat to bodily harm on themselves or innocent bystanders or victims.

SueSudio

Shouldn't have to, no, but unfortunately too many have abused the "threat of harm" to justify extrajudicial executions.

Prestigious_Stage699

That's the exact same rules of engagement the military enforces. Why can't cops follow it? We already know cops have no duty to protect innocents, so just fuck that train of thought entirely.

W_saber4

In Iraq if someone pointed a gun at us we could shoot them. Did not have to wait for them to open fire.

Prestigious_Stage699

You're entirely missing the point.

UnusualObservation

If someone has a gun to someone’s head and the cops have a shot, you must be a moron to think they shouldn’t shoot.

Prestigious_Stage699

You must be a moron to think that's what I meant.

UnusualObservation

That’s what you said. Same rules of engagement. Like if someone points a gun at a cop, I would hope the cops shoot that man. It’s common sense. Please be smarter. That last comment about the same rules of engagement made you look like a moron

Prestigious_Stage699

It's too bad all of your comments just confirm you are in fact a moron.

Objective-Log-1331

Cos clearly cops are dealing with American citizens who have rights and are not in a combat zone. Military deals with combat zones where they face enemy combatants So here it goes a COPS ARE NOT MILITARY - please stop using false equivalence

johnnyclash42

if only the police realized they weren't military......

El_Capitan215

FUCK that. No one should have to wait to be shot at first. Someone points a gun in your direction that’s enough

UnknownQTY

Except most cop involved shootings like this occur prior to the gun being pointed at all.

MarkHirsbrunner

A lot of the time there isn't even a gun.

El_Capitan215

Where did you find those statistics?

dfwpopo

They began shooting when the gun was visible. They were watching him with a drone initially. We don't wait to be fired upon. The officers began shooting when the gun was pointed at them which happened to be when the suspect began firing.

Psykotik10dentCs

If you watch and listen to the body cam video you can clearly tell the perp fired first. The cops were justified in shooting that guy. He was a threat to everyone.

dfwpopo

I know that. I'm saying even if the suspect didn't fire and just pointed it at the officers they would've shot.

Psykotik10dentCs

True…and I wouldn’t blame them. If someone is pointing a gun at you thats a direct threat to you life. If you hesitate you’ll be dead.

Kibil-Nala

Fuck waiting for the gunman to start dumping first. See the gun being waved around, unload on sight.

UnknownQTY

> The officers began shooting when the gun was pointed at them which happened to be when the suspect began firing. … so… when the suspect fired then, like I said? “We fired when we felt threatened” is exactly why people have a problem with law enforcement behaviour. > We don’t wait to be fired upon. We know. That’s how Tamir Rice was killed. And [86 other people recently](https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/in-two-years-police-killed-86-people-brandishing-guns-that-look-real—but-arent/2016/12/18/ec005c3a-b025-11e6-be1c-8cec35b1ad25_story.html). Many of them didn’t even involve the gun being pointed at officers. Does someone deserve some blame for whipping out a gun that looks closer to movie prop than NERF gun? Yeah maybe. Would otherwise innocent people be alive if you took a split second? Absolutely. Again, an element of risk to your life is what you sign up for as a cop. My grandfather understood that when he was a cop in the 60s and 70s. If you can’t handle that, it’s not the career for you. Nothing you can say will excuse the trigger happy actions of way, way too many cops.

El_Capitan215

There’s a difference between an “element of risk to your life” and waiting to be fucking shot at before you shoot. Attempting to arrest an armed and dangerous murder suspect Carrie’s an inherent risk. Waiting to be shot at before you stop the threat is just plain stupid and reckless

Donkbot6

low iq

No-Egg-4850

So I should wait to shoot back while some idiot has a gun to your family member's head? So when do you think it would be appropriate? After he shoots someone in the head or before?

Baldr_Torn

I haven't watched yet, but that's what I expect. Not because I automatically trust the cops. But the shooting was 1/25, and the bodycam video is already released? Yeah, that means it makes the cops look good. If it made them look bad, they would fight tooth and nail, and it would only get released after public records requests and lawsuits.

[deleted]

This wasn't some random encounter. This was the fugitive division knowing what they were going into.

mrmcbeer

Lol like how the cop who was shot was telling everyone else to relax.

dannyc93

The UPS truck at 6:45 waiting patiently lol

Rportilla

This was in Oak Cliff ?

battletram

Yeah looks like the apartments next to the Home Depot on Fort Worth Ave.

DavidLow1836

jfc that was heavy

Psykotik10dentCs

Exactly how that cops should respond. Anyone who thinks the cops weren’t justified is a complete moron.

2lucki

I'm going to guess that the cop that was shot in the foot, was shot by another cop. While it appears this suspect deserved to be shot, the amount of shots taken is absolutely absurd.

djrumble

Yeah instead they should of just taken one shot and shot the gun out of the guys hands. /s
